Cody Guidorzi Tenders With Port Huron St. Louis Jr. Blues – March 18, 2013
The St. Louis Jr. Blues regular season leading scorer, Cody Guidorzi, has signed a tender with the Port Huron Falcons of the NAHL for next season. Guidorzi finished the regular season with 54 points in 44 games. Head coach J.P. Beilsten said, “Cody told me this weekend that he had decided to sign with Port Huron. He had several opportunities to tender this year but decided to sign with the Falcons.” Guidorzi said, “I liked what the coaching staff had to say. I feel like this is a situation that will allow me to go to camp and make the team and be a productive member of
the team.” Beilsten continued, “We are excited for Cody. We didn’t know how special of a player we were getting in Cody. He had been hampered by injuries last year, so he didn’t really have the chance to showcase what he can do. This year he did. He is going to a good team with a good track record of moving players, especially in the last couple of years.” Guidorzi is second in team scoring in the playoffs with 6 points in three games. Jr. Blues Sign O’Bryan and McGlynn St. Louis Jr. Blues – March 23, 2013
The St. Louis Jr. Blues are happy to announce that they have signed their first two tenders for the 2013-14 season. Head Coach J.P. Beilsten said, “We feel like we have committed to two excellent, young hockey players.” The Jr. Blues signed Andy McGlynn, a 1997 birth year player that played for the Affton Americans U18 CSDHL team in 201213. Also committing to the Jr. Blues is Zane O’Bryan, also a 1997 birth year player that skated with the St. Louis Amateur Blues U16 AAA team in 2012-13. Beilsten continued, “I have been watching these guys all year, both with their youth and high school teams. Both of them are game changers. Both are not only skilled

with the puck, but gritty. Both will have some work to do this summer, getting stronger and learning to play against older, more physical players, but in the long run, both will have some great opportunities at the next level.” O’Bryan and McGlynn hope to join the list of tenders that went on to become successful players in the NA3HL. Several of the tenders from 2012-13 have had outstanding seasons and are tendered at the Tier II level, including, Trey Dodd, Kyle Meeh, and Brycon Johnson. Beilsten said, “I’m really excited about getting these guys. I think both sides will benefit greatly!”

St. Louis Bantam AAA Majors Punch Ticket To Tier I Nationals by Bill Hester - ‘Hockey Stop’ Correspondent’ The ‘98 St. Louis AAA Blues hope to put an exclamation point on what has already been a memorable 2012-13 season. The Bantam Major squad has already won the St. Louis Super Series and the Dallas Super Series. They have also been U.S. champs in the Nation’s Cup and made the finals in the Bauer World Hockey Invitational. The Blues now look for a happy ending to their 50 win season (against only five losses and six ties) at the Bantam Major National Tournament, which will be played in Pittsburgh April 3-7. St. Louis, which is ranked fourth nationally, qualified for nationals by wining the Central District Championships March 15-17 in Wisconsin. They did so in unconventional style by scoring 19 goals in their three games, all victories. They had a player register a hat trick in every game. “We have not been a high scoring team,” Blues coach Kerry Preete said. “The key for us has been limiting shots and goals. We have been emphasizing the last three or four weeks that we need to get to the net and score goals when you get to this level. We were able to do that in Wisconsin although we had to come back in every game.” It was a four-team round-robin format with several tie-breakers which were not needed with the three St. Louis wins. Brandon Puricelli set the tone for the improved offense with four goals in a 5-2 opening round win against the Chicago Mission. Logan Brown followed with a hat trick of his own in an 8-3 victory over Russell
Stover. The Blues closed out the tournament with a 6-3 win over the Milwaukee Jr. Admirals as Trent Frederic had three goals. “We had the big scoring games individually but those guys would be the first to say that their success was because everybody played well,” Preete said. “I think the key for us in this tournament and throughout the season is that when we are healthy we roll out three forward lines and three sets of defensemen. We play a full roster.” Preete does not plan to change in the 12-team national tournament. “We hope to stick with our plan and attack both offensively and defensively,” Preete said. St. Louis has played over half of the teams in the national tournament through the season including top-ranked Honeybaked from Detroit. “Honeybaked has separated themselves a bit and are the team to beat coming into the tournament,” Preete said. “We played them once and lost 4-2 at the Silver Sticks. But we played well after trailing 3-0 after the first seven minutes.” The Blues will get their next shot at Honeybaked in their third game of the tournament after games with Indianapolis and New Jersey. AAA Midget Majors Win Central District Tier I Championship by Bill Hester - ‘Hockey Stop’ Correspondent’ The Central District Championships for the Midget Major division were expected to be tight and it was evident from the very first round that was going to be the case. Two games in the four-team round-robin were decided in overtime. The Midget Major AAA Blues defeated the Chicago Mission, 3-2, in overtime in their first game, which set the tone for a district title and a spot in the national tournament, which will be played April 3-7 in Pittsburgh. The win over the Mission, which was ranked second in the nation, was a huge one as the Blues dominated the five-player shootout. Goaltender Cameron Gornet stopped all three of the Mission shots while the Blues scored on their first three shots. St. Louis followed that game with a 4-1 win over Russell Stover but they still needed a team over Team Wisconsin in the third game to earn the national birth. Wisconsin was mathematically eliminated but gave the Blues all they could handle before the Blues prevailed 3-2. “I thought that we were the better team,” St. Louis coach Scott Sanderson said. “But they put together an All-Star type of team and had a lot of skilled players. They had not played together as much as we had though. But I have to give them a lot of credit. They played extremely hard and we really had to earn it.” Wisconsin pulled its goalie in the final min-
ute and the Blues had four key blocked shots to preserve the win and the national birth. Winning the two close games in districts was symbolic of the way the season has gone for the Blues, who are ranked eighth in the nation entering the national tournament. “We have been a strong defensive team all year,” Sanderson said. “In close games we do not waver. The third period is usually our strongest.” Sanderson looks forward to seeing how his team will compete in Pittsburgh. “Our first three games are against teams which are ranked ahead of us so we will be the underdogs and that is fine with us,” Sanderson said. “I expect that we will represent St. Louis well. The one thing that I know is that we will not get out-worked and when you work hard you always have an opportunity. Jon Cooper Named Head Coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning NHL Release, March 25, 2013 - www.nhl.com The Tampa Bay Lightning named Jon Cooper as the eighth head coach in franchise history on March 25, 2013. Cooper joined the Lightning after having spent the previous three seasons behind the bench of Tampa Bay’s top minor league affiliate, the Norfolk Admirals from 201012 and this season with the Syracuse Crunch, compiling a 133-62-26 (.661) record in 221 AHL games. Cooper was awarded the Louis A.R. Pieri Memorial Award as the AHL’s top coach last season after guiding the Admirals to the Calder Cup Championship. He led Norfolk to a 94-4418 record in the regular season and a 17-7 mark in the playoffs during two seasons behind the bench. In 2011-12 the Cooper-led Admirals set franchise records with 55 wins and 113 points en route to the franchise’s first Calder Cup Championship. Along the way Cooper and
his team set a North American professional sports record, winning a remarkable 28 consecutive games. That season Norfolk earned the Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy as the AHL’s regular season points champion, while also capturing the league’s East Division title. During the 2012-13 season, Cooper led the Crunch to a 39-18-8 record, the best in the AHL, despite a number of key players being recalled to the Lightning. Syracuse’s 218 goals are also the most in the league. Of the Bolts’ current roster, 10 players have played for the Crunch this season, already giving Cooper familiarity with a number of players. Cooper has also run the Lightning’s development camps during his time in the organization. Before joining the AHL ranks, Cooper also found success in the USHL with the Green Bay Gamblers, posting an 84-27-9 record in two
seasons. Under Cooper’s guidance the Gamblers posted back-to-back seasons with the best record in the USHL and won the 2010 Clark Cup. In 2008-09, Cooper’s first season, Green Bay saw a 50-point improvement from the previous year, setting a USHL record for largest single-season improvement. He was rewarded with the 2009 and 2010 USHL General Manager of the Year Awards, as well as being named the 2010 USHL Coach of the Year.. A native of Prince, George, British Columbia, Cooper played high school hockey at Notre Dame in Wilcox, Saskatchewan. He then moved on to Hofstra University, where he played four seasons of division I lacrosse. Cooper also played one season on Hofstra’s hockey team. He then in coaching. went on to earn a law degree from Thomas M. Cooper and his wife Jessie have three children: Cooley Law School in Lansing, Michigan, eventutwin daughters, Julia and Josephine, and a son, ally closing his practice in 2003 to pursue a career Jonathan.

DASA Blues Win National Sled Championship by Bill Hester - ‘Hockey Stop’ Correspondent’ The plane carrying the Disabled Athlete Sports Association (DASA) St. Louis Blues sled hockey team was the last to land at Lambert Field March 24 after the historic spring snowstorm of 2013. And it also contained some important cargo including the trophy for a national championship, which the DASA-St. Louis Blues earned earlier that day in Westchester, Pennsylvania. It was all good news indeed with the national title and the safe flight, which actually landed several minutes early. The DASA St. Louis Blues were well prepared for the national tournament after finishing first in the premier sled hockey league, the Midwest Sled Hockey League. DASA-St. Louis lost just one league game, falling to the Chicago Blackhawks. The format for the national tournament included two pools of four teams with the top two teams in each pool qualifying for the semifinals. DASA-St. Louis found itself with no margin for error after falling to the San Antonio Rampage 2-1 in the first round-robin game. It was the same Rampage team which St. Louis had beaten six of seven times during the season although all of the games were close. DASA-St. Louis won a tight 2-1 game against the Pittsburgh Penguins and then clinched a spot in the semifinals with a convincing 8-1 triumph over the UNH Wildcats. DASA-St. Louis finished second in Pool A and crossed over to play the Buffalo Sabres, who had won Pool A. The semifinal game proved to be a classic with the Blues coming out on top 3-2 in sudden death overtime. Buffalo was the defending Tier I national champions. Buffalo had pulled its goalie to tie the game in the final moments but Josh Pauls scored on
a breakaway after receiving a pass from Billy Hanning just 1:17 into sudden death. “That was the most exciting game of the tournament,” Blues coach Mike Dowling said. “There was so much excitement after Josh had scored that goal. But Josh gathered the team together and said to act like we had been there before.” There was also some unfinished business, the national championship game which was a rematch of the first game of the tournament against San Antonio. The Blues had opened the season back in November in Buffalo at the National Hockey League Sled Classic, which included 14 teams sanctioned by NHL teams. DASA-St. Louis had finished 3-2 in that tournament with its two losses coming against Buffalo and San Antonio. They avenged the Buffalo loss in the semifinals and avenged the loss to San Antonio in the championship game 3-1 although the third goal was an empty netter. “We knew we were the best team and we had to go out there and prove it,” Dowling said. “We had all those games against San Antonio during the season and I think every one of them were decided by a goal and a couple went into overtime.” It was the same kind of story in the title game as the Blues raced out to a 2-0 lead. San Antonio scored to get to within a goal but then the Blues clinched it with the empty net goal to finish the season with an overall record of 22-5 and a national title.
