SLUH Billikens Win Challenge Cup by Bill Hester - ‘Hockey Stop’ Correspondent’ Charlie Busenhart accomplished so many things during his 41 years behind the bench at St. Louis University High. The one thing that eluded Busenhart was a Challenge Cup Championship. It took Kevin Fitzpatrick just one year to finish up what Busenhart started as the Junior Bills defeated rival CBC 2-1 in overtime March 4 to capture the 2013 championship in the Mid-States Hockey Association. “It is amazing to me that Charlie was able to do that for 41 years and be the only coach there,” Fitzpatrick said. “He left me a great group of kids and it was so special for the kids and SLUH Nation that we were finally able to finish it off.” The Junior Bills had been in three previous championship games, including the one in 2012, which was won by CBC 3-1. Busenhart had helped lay a great foundation but it didn’t take Fitzpatrick long to realize that there was some work to be done. “We played CBC twice in the Top Hat Tournament to open the season and they dominated both games, shutting us out each time,” Fitzpatrick said. “There was certainly work to be done.”

SLUH had its share of adversity in the regular season, especially in the last week of the regular season when goaltender Brenden Haselhorst broke the hand on his catching glove in warm-ups prior to a game. The Junior Bills thus had to enter the playoffs with little used freshman Joe Warnecke. “We didn’t spend a whole time talking about it,” Fitzpatrick said of the change of goalies. “We had to keep doing what we were doing. I felt that Joe was a very capable goalie who could have started for a lot of teams.” Warnecke was in goal in a 4-1 loss to CBC in the regular season finale. But he got better and better as the playoffs progressed. SLUH won its first series against Kirkwood 5-3 and 6-1 and then had a big test against Lindbergh. The talented Flyers won the first game 4-1 but Warnecke had a shutout in a 4-0 win in the second game and the Junior Bills earned their trip to the Scottrade Center with a 1-0 win in the mini-game. CBC survived a tough series against Oakville and it was the long-time rivals matching up for all the marbles for the Challenge Cup title. “CBC had been in the state finals 13 years in a row and we were glad to be playing them,” Fitzpatrick said. “To be the best, you have to beat the best.” And that is exactly what SLUH did in a classic championship game. The game was scoreless until SLUH’s Nick

“Traditions Symbolize Us... Championships Define Us” Walters scored late in the second period. It appeared that goal might stand up. But the defending champions did not go down without a fight as Christian Argyros scored with less than three minutes remaining. The game would go into overtime and it didn’t take the Junior Bills long to win it as Steve Lordo knocked in a rebound from a shot by Chase Berger. “Steve has scored some big goals for us all season and he did a good job of driving to the net and putting it in,” said Fitzpatrick of Lordo, who will attend Robert Morris University on a lacrosse scholarship.

Lordo’s goal set off a wild celebration for championship No. 1 for the Junior Bills. “The victory was one of the greatest feelings I have felt in the game of hockey,” Fitzpatrick said. “I said all along I had a special feeling about this group of boys and sure enough it came true. The key to this championship is that we had 25 going in one direction. The kids all bought into the team concept.”

Triad Sweeps Bethalto For MVCHA 1A Championship by Pete Hayes - The Telegraph

In the Class 1A finals series, Triad completed a sweep of Bethalto with a 4-2 victory in the late nightcap at East Alton. Triad’s Kyle Culibrek scored the gamewinning goal with 1:32 left, spoiling a comeback by Bethalto and giving the Knights the 1A championship. “Actually, I thought we played our game for the most part,” Bethalto coach Corey Newgent said. “A couple of odd bounces helped (Triad) on their first two goals, but that’s part of the game “But even when we were down, the kids were still positive.” Triad’s Kyle Kowalsky added an emptynet goal with one second remaining. “Triad has a lot of young kids that play well together, especially on defense,” Newgent said. “Tonight, we penetrated the middle early, but you could see them adjust and shut that down as the game went on.” The Eagles took an early lead when

Dallas Price scored a short-handed goal at the 4:43 mark of the first period. He was assisted by Aaron Scott and Andrew Bond. In the second period, Tim Faulkner

scored an unassisted short-handed goal at 10:01 to tie it at 1-1 and teammate Harrison Mohesky gave the Knights a 2-1 lead at 7:42 with an unassisted goal. Bethalto’s Braden Emerick scored the tying goal at 7:57 of the third period off assists from Scott and Price, but that was the final goal of the Eagles’ season. “These kids gave it all they had the whole year,” Newgent said of his team. “I

Edwardsville Edges O’Fallon In MVCHA 2A Championship by Pete Hayes - The Telegraph

EAST ALTON – Jon Weisner knew exactly which move he’d use. It had already served him well. It did so again. And as a result, Edwardsville is the Mississippi Valley Club Hockey Association Class 2A champions – again. Weisner scored a penalty shot with 16 seconds remaining to lift Edwardsville to at thrilling 3-2 victory over O’Fallon Monday night at the East Alton Ice Arena. The victory meant a 2-0 sweep in the best-of-three series and the Tigers’ second consecutive league crown. “Last year against Granite City (in the North Division finals), it came down to a penalty shot and I went with the move I’ve practiced for years and years,” Weisner said. “So I did it again tonight - and it goes in again.” The penalty shot came about after Weisner was taken down from behind on a breakaway by O’Fallon’s Zach Jordan. “I believe it was the right call, but honestly, I was surprised I got (the penalty shot) because there were only 16 seconds left.” Referee Ed Newgent made the call quickly and matter-of-factly. And after the O’Fallon bench’s protests were heard and dismissed, Weisner went to work. He swept up the puck at center ice, zoomed in on O’Fallon goalkeeper Dylan Goss. Weisner faked a shot high right, stopped the puck, pulling Goss to his right. He then popped the shot into the empty left side. “This one may have meant more because it was for the (league) championship,’ Weisner said. His coach said the Tigers had the right guy for a penalty shot. “He’s as good as anybody I’ve seen on breakaways,” Edwardsville coach Jason Walker said of Weisner. “I think the call was the right one. I know its tough to get a penalty shot with only 16 seconds left, but (Weisner) didn’t get the shot off. When he was pulled down – that was the key.” O’Fallon coach Ken Barnhill said, “It’s unfortunate that the game came down to that (penalty shot). “But if we had scored a couple of other goals during the game, it wouldn’t have mattered.” For O’Fallon, the loss was made even more difficult because the Panthers controlled much of the puck possession and had a 31-23 advantage on shots. Tigers sophomore goalkeeper R.J. Pluhar made 21 saves. “(Pluhar) did an awesome job,” Walker said. “He made some great saves – he stood on his head out there.” After a scoreless, penalty filled first period, the Tigers grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second. Marshal Gevers scored from a Weisner assist at 9:29 and Leo Blandina scored from a Matt Taylor assist at 7:42. Each team was whistled for four penalties in the first period. Overall, O’Fallon was called for seven and Edwardsville for six penalties. But the Panthers rallied. Rubin Chavarria scored just seconds after Blandina’s goal to make it 2-1 and Brandon Goss scored at 2:43 to tie it at 2-2 heading into the third period. “We’ve never played a team any better than O’Fallon,” Walker said. “What a game. “Thank God it’s over. O’Fallon was hungry.” Amid the post-game celebration, Weisner leaned against the wall, stared at the floor, shook his head a breathed a sigh of relief. “O’Fallon didn’t want their season to end,” Weisner said. “ They gave everything they had – but so did we.”

Affton Majors Top Twin Bridges In State Championship by Bill Hester - ‘Hockey Stop’ Correspondent’ The Affton Americans Midget Major Central States Developmental Hockey League (CSDHL) team has been ranked No. 1 in the country since last October. But that did not mean a thing when they competed recently in the Missouri State Championship. That field included top 20 teams Chesterfield and Twin Bridges and Chesterfield was the defending national champion. “We had four games against two tough teams just to get to the championship game,” Affton coach Chris Flaugher said. “We expected a battle and we got a battle.” Affton split its two games against the defending national champions, winning 5-2 and losing 2-1. But they swept Twin Bridges, winning by

scores of 8-1 and 2-1. Twin Bridges, on the other hand, defeated Chesterfield twice, once in regulation and another time in overtime. Affton would win the championship game 7-3 but don’t let the final score fool you. It was another come-from-behind effort from the Americans, who had battled back in the final minutes to tie Twin Bridges 4-4 in the CSDHL Tournament after being down 4-0. Twin Bridges would twice have two goal leads, 2-0 and 3-1, in the state championship contest before Affton closed out with six unanswered goals. “They came out flying and took that 2-0 lead in the first six or eight minutes,” Flaugher

Wentzville Holt captured the Mid-States Hockey Association’s Wickenheiser Cup in 2011. Not many expected another title two years later as the Indians were the 12th seed (out of 16) entering the 2013 tournament. But it was Holt, once again, which celebrated with the Wickenheiser Cup after a thrilling 4-3 win over Duchesne in the title game March 4 at Scottrade Center. “We had kind of a roller coaster regular season, it was up and down,” Holt coach Larry Sadowski said. “But I really thought that we had as good a chance as anybody to win the championship.” Holt survived the round-robin portion of the tournament without a loss. But its reward found the Indians matched up against the topseed, Eureka. But the Indians played some of their best hockey of the season in disposing of the Wildcats in two games, winning by scores of 5-1 and 3-1. That gave Holt some momentum going into the a semifinal series against Lutheran South. That would go down to a shootout for the right to go to Scottrade. Holt won the first game of the series 3-2 and had a 2-0 lead with less than two minutes remaining in the second period of the second game. But the Lancers scored two late goals in the second period and added a pair of goals in the third period for a 4-2 victory, which necessitated the mini-game. Neither team scored in the mini-game with Holt prevailing in the climatic shootout 2-1. There was more drama to come at the Scottrade Center in a backand-forth game in which Sadowski did something he had not done all season, use two goalies in the game. “One of the reasons I thought we had a chance to win the tournament was the play of our two goalies (Zach Burnett and Jacob Stewart),” Sadowski said. “Not many teams can say they have two No. 1 goalies.” Sadowski alternated them throughout the season but wanted both to have a taste of the championship game. Stewart started the game with Burnett coming in midway through the second period. The first period was wide open with Holt taking the 3-2 lead on goals by Corbin Foppe and Austin Messengren in the final minute. Duchesne tied the game in the second period and it remained that way until 49 seconds to play when Foppe, who was named the game’s Most Valuable Player, scored the championship-winner. “Corbin got a pass from one of our seniors, Messengren, on the left wing and just buried it,” said Sadowski of his sophomore. “He has been our leading scorer and came up big again.” It was a satisfying end to the roller coaster season. “We came together at the end and turned it on when we needed to the most,” Sadowski said. “We had to scratch and claw for every win we got this year. I think the key was our persistence and the fact we never gave up. They showed that they deserve to be here.”

said. “But our guys have been down before, especially in the league tournament when I think we were down in every game but one.” The momentum seemed to change when Ryan Hodges scored a goal early in the second period to make it 3-2. “I think that goal was the turning point,” Flaugher said. “The feeling on the bench was good after Ryan scored. We were able to stay disciplined and took advantage of some power play opportunities.” Josh Bell scored the goal to make it 3-3 and Toppie Hogan and Andy McGlynn took over from there. Hogan finished the game with two goals and three assists while McGlynn added a pair of goals. The Americans, who have had huge wins throughout the season including against early season top-ranked Chicago Bruins and Team Ohio which was ranked No. 2, improved to 40-10-6 for the season as they prepare for the national tournament in Hartford, CT. April 3-7. “The kids made it their goal not only to make it to the national tournament but to win it,” Flaugher said. “Two down (the league tourna-

ment and the state tournament) and one to go. These kids have skill, speed and they are willing to sacrifice for the team. If we play our style, we are going to be a tough team to beat.” The Midget Major Missouri State Champions are Jacob Bobb, Cameron Dulle, Andy McGlynn, Nolan Wuesthoff, Josh Bell, Shawn Leslie, Michael Humme, Ryan Hodges, Tom Croghan, Lance French, Phillip Solari, Toppie Hogan, Glenn Ryan, John Hogan, Ryan Croghan, Frankie Melton, Dustin Smith, Brendan McClew, Patrick Mitchell and Bill Hindle. Affton Wins Midget Minor National Qualifier by Bill Hester - ‘Hockey Stop’ Correspondent’ There will be a new national champion this year in the Midget Minor National Tournament. The Chesterfield Falcons, who were the 2011-12 champs, were knocked off in the state tournament by the Affton Americans team from the Central States Developmental Hockey League (CSDHL). Affton won the championship game 6-2 March 12 at Lindenwood in Wentzville. Photo courtesy of Jeff Pawlow

Americans coach Brian McGlynn described the regular season as an up-and-down one. Affton, which was plagued by injuries, finished third in the league and were knocked out in the semifinal round of the league tournament. But they appear to be peaking at the right time. “It’s a simple formula,” McGlynn said. “We are scoring more goals and allowing less goals.” That is a formula for success and was the case at the state tournament as Affton won all three of its round-robin games prior to the convincing win in the championship game. Affton defeated Chesterfield 4-3, the St. Peters

Spirit 3-0 and Twin Bridges 7-3 in round-robin. “We have done well against those teams this season but they were always good games,” McGlynn said. “You are never comfortable coming into a quality tournament like this. This kind of tournament seems to bring out the best in teams.” And that was the case for the Americans who received solid goaltending from the duo of Brady Griffin and Brendan Shuck and balanced scoring. “The scores might not indicate it but all of the games were close until midway through the third period,” McGlynn said. “The championship game was 3-1 in the third when we broke it open with some quick goals. Lately, the third period has been a good one for us. We have been able to wear our opponents down.” McGlynn, whose team is ranked 14th nationally, would love to bring the championship trophy back to St. Louis. “I think our chances of doing well are good as long as we keep playing the way we are now,” McGlynn said. “We have to minimize our mistakes and get the games into the third period.” And then hope that the third period magic continues. The team will travel to Troy, Michigan, April 3-7 to compete in the National Championship Tournament. The Midget Minor Missouri State Champions are Brady Griffin, Joey Palazzola, Tanner Young, Kevin LaPlante, Cameron McAtee, Stan Pawlow, Andrew Ott, Brian Schumacher, Austin Junger, Jordan Bratton, Tommy Loeffelman, Jeremy Huber, PJ Drury, Sam Maddox, Luke Fairchild, Charlie Freshman, Cam Oliver, Curtis Schlereth, Daniel Dunaway and Brendan Shuck. The coaches are Brian McGlynn, Tom Jost, Kevin McGlynn and Colin McGlynn.

Affton Bantams Upset St. Peters in National Qualifier by Bill Hester - ‘Hockey Stop’ Correspondent’ The sixth time proved to be the charm for the Affton Bantam Majors Central States Developmental Hockey League (CSDHL) team. And the charm means that Affton has a chance to defend its national championship April 3-7 in Charlotte, NC. Affton, which is ranked fifth nationally, had to play the St. Peters Selects in the championship game of the National Qualifier, which was played March 10 at Webster Groves. St. Peters, which is ranked second, had beaten Affton five times previously during the season including a 6-3 triumph in the round-robin portion of the tournament (Affton advanced with a 1-0 overtime win over Chesterfield and a 10-2 win over the St. Louis Rockets). “They had beaten us five times and they earned those wins,” Affton coach Matt Ocello. “They are a very good team. St. Peters was the favorite coming into the season and I knew that. But I knew if we got them in the championship game of the national qualifier that it would be just one game that we needed to win.” Ocello made some major adjustments in the championship game including the insertion of goalie John Massara. “John had probably played a period and a half total in the first five games against them,” Ocello said. “But I thought he was the better fit in the championship game and he played excellently. The only goal he gave up actually went off our defenseman. I also had some different line combinations. We had a specific game plan and the guys execut-

ed it very well. It was our best game of the season.” It resulted in a 5-1 victory and a return trip to the national tournament. Affton scored the game’s first two goals before St. Peters cut the deficit to one. But Affton closed it out with three unanswered goals. “At this age level I think it is key to have three solid lines and all of our guys played so well,” Ocello said. “It was a total team effort.” Affton had a tremendous season in the CSDHL. A 25-1-1 record almost certainly would result in a league championship. But this year it was only good for a tie with the Highland Park Falcons. The two teams split their league games and each also had the tie. Highland Park then defeated Affton 3-2 in the playoff championship game. Affton will take not only an impressive 45-15-2 record to Charlotte but something just as important, momentum. “If we can carry the momentum of the win against St. Peters to nationals we have a very good chance to be successful,” Ocello said.
