Affton Squirt A1 coach Gus Jacoby was searching for a good tournament for his team in preparation for the end of the season league tournament. He elected to play in the Chi-Town Cup Tournament in Chicago. It turned out to be a good choice as the Americans won the tournament, which was played Feb. 15-18. “We had won a couple of tournaments earlier in the season and we were looking for the most competitive tournament that we could find with some good high A teams and AA teams,” Jacoby said. “This was exactly what we wanted. We played some good teams, won the tournament and I think it prepared us for the league tournament because we are in the finals against Chesterfield.” Jacoby was not sure of his decision after the first game of round-robin action as the Americans breezed to a 7-1 victory over the Ice Dogs. “I think that game kind of threw us off a bit winning by such a margin,” Jacoby said. But the rest of the weekend was very competitive. Affton followed with a 4-1 win over Canton Victory Honda. A 5-5 tie against the Admirals United Squirt Red team assured the Americans a spot in the championship game. The opponent in the title game was still to be determined as the Americans prepared to face the Winnetka Warriors. “Winnetka was a very solid team and our strategy in that final round-robin game was to beat them and knock them out,” Jacoby said.

The Americans did their part with a hardfought 3-2 victory but Winnetka still managed to make it to the championship game after the results of the other final round-robin games. And the title game on Feb. 18 was a terrific one as the teams battled to a 3-3 tie in regulation in a back-and-forth contest. Neither team was able to score in sudden death so the game and the championship would be determined by a shoot-out. Maxwell Wagener, who had scored the final goal in regulation for Affton, scored in the shoot-out with the eventual winner coming off the stick of Jack Dapron. “The top kids who I thought would come through in the shootout did not but Maxwell and Jack came up big for us,” Jacoby said. Jacoby credited the play of goaltenders Drew Moseley and Mariano Colombo as a key to the Chi-Town title. “The offense has really led us throughout the year but it was the play of the defense and the two goalies that were huge in Chicago,” Jacoby said. “I named the two goalies as the MVP’s of the tournament.” Members of the champion Affton Americans Squirt A1 team included: Mariano Colombo, Drew Moseley, Gabe Kiene, Emma Gerwitz, Max Wagener, Michael Lane, Ben Kremer, Cam Jacoby, Sam Traine, Kenny Banaszek, Collin Wobbe, Nick Foerstel, Tommy Lavigne and Jack Dapron.

AAA Blues Midget Minors Win Tier I Elite League Championship by Bill Hester - ‘Hockey Stop’ Correspondent’

The AAA Blues had a 5-3 lead over the Los Angeles Junior Kings with less than a minute and a half to play in the semifinals. But the Kings scored twice, the game-tying goal with just six seconds to play to send it to overtime. The overtime lasted just 91 seconds when Matthew Tkachuk sent St. Louis to the title game with the OT goal. “It was a strange goal,” Mermis said. “Their defenseman had the puck and his stick snapped in half when he tried to pass it. Matthew was right there and you wouldn’t want anybody else but him to have the puck at the top of the crease. “It was great to see the guys flush out of their systems the final couple minutes of regulation and get back to business,” Mermis said. The game-tying goal with six seconds left proved

The St. Louis AAA Blues Midget Minor hockey team made history, winning the first Tier I Elite League Tournament championship. They did so in impressive fashion in the tourney in Blaine, MN. “It’s great for the team and for St. Louis hockey to win the inaugural one,” Blues coach Bil Mermis said. The Blues had some anxious moments, especially in the semifinals, but they came away with five victories in five games. They allowed just seven goals, five of them coming in one game. “This is a true team,” Mermis said. “The guys know their roles. You can’t have 12 play-makers out there. We have our share but we have physical guys, a strong and consistent defense and two great goalies. It adds up to an end product of a quality hockey team.”

It took a game for the AAA Blues to get going in the tournament. They managed only 16 shots in their opening game against the Philadelphia Junior Flyers. But five of those shots resulted in goals, including a pair by Luke Fraser in a 5-1 victory. “We were a little sluggish in that first game but we built from that game and I felt the Cleveland game was a key one,” Mermis said. The AAA Blues dominated the game, outshooting the Barons 34-13 but the game was tied 1-1 until the final five minutes when Joseph Matthews scored a power play goal. Joe Staely made a key save late in the game and AAA Blues escaped with a 2-1 victory. St. Louis closed out pool play with a 3-0 win over the Boston Advantage as Luke Opilka earned the shutout with 22 saves.

to be the last goal allowed by the AAA Blues, who won the championship game 3-0 over the Thunder AAA team, which is based out of Huntsville, Alabama. Tkachuk, who had 13 points in the five games, got things started with a goal in the first minute of the championship game. “Coaches always are talking about starting the game off well and that quick goal was a big one,” Mermis said. Jacob Henderson, who had a hat trick in the semifinal win over the Kings, added a first period goal. A suffocating Blues’ defense took over as they allowed just 11 Thunder shots, only two in the final period. Tkachuk closed out the scoring with a goal in the final minute. “We played a very good game in that championship game,” Mermis said. “One of the strengths of this team is our depth and I think it really showed in that final game.” Members of the inaugural Tier One Elite League champions include: Matthew Tkachuk; Jacob Henderson; Luke Kunin; Michael Davies; Drew Croghan; Luke Fraser; Joseph Matthews; Vincent Scognamiglio; Zane O’Bryan; Cole Chatham; Luke Radetic; Jake Carothers; Thomas Kolaz; Thomas Espenschied; Jeff Trubacik; Kole Mudra; Adam Roeder; Jacob Wilson; Luke Opilka; and Joe Staely.

Mehlville Tops Priory In Founders Cup Championship by Bill Hester - ‘Hockey Stop’ Correspondent’

Photo by Tim Parker - timparkerphoto.com

Jim Arno did not know what he was getting into when he took over the head coaching position of the hockey team at Mehlville High School this winter. Arno is a long-time coach who has been involved in winning teams such as St. Mary’s, Oakville, Vianney and DeSmet. “Let’s say it was a lot different when I first met these kids,” Arno said. “There was no system and no philosophy. It was just a bunch of kids playing hockey.” Arno quickly had to set some ground rules and there were some trying times and adversity throughout the season. But the group of players he met in September grew into a team and a championship team at that as the Panthers captured the Mid-States Hockey Association Founder’s Cup title Feb. 18 with a 3-2 victory over Priory. “It was all about growth and maturity,” Arno said. “We only had a couple of lines so we put in a neutral zone trap and the kids became more patient.” The Panthers improved as the season wore on but had a disappointing tight loss to Northwest in the regular season finale. “There was a lot on the line in that game and I could tell the kids were disappointed,” Arno said. “But I told the guys that I believed in them. They had a lot of stuff thrown at them and I saw these kids become adults.” Arno was confident that his fourth-seeded Panthers would compete for the Founder’s Cup title. “I talked to them before the playoffs and said that there were four reasons to get five wins and those four reasons were the four seniors,” Arno said of Dalton Morrison, David Piel, Jake Schaefer and William Borner.” And what a happy ending it proved to be for those seniors. Mehlville earned a first round bye and then won a very tough series against Timberland, winning

the first game 6-4 and earning a 5-5 tie in the second. “I know their coach and I knew that was not going to be easy,” Arno said. “We played well and did a good job of staying out of the penalty box.” Mehlville played its best hockey of the season in the next series, easily disposing of Whitfield 11-1 and 11-0. “I was concerned going into that series because they had beaten Pattonville which beat us 4-0,” Arno said. “I knew they had a good goalie but we had two strong games and you could see the confidence grow.” The championship game was a rematch against the Rebels. Mehlville won the regular season game 3-0 behind a pair of goals by Schaefer. It looked like it might be a repeat in the title game as Schaefer scored as did Joey Parker to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead. But Priory scored twice and it was 2-2 after two periods. “I told the guys between the second and third period to win every shift and win the period and you will win the championship,” Arno said. Schaefer scored what proved to be the game and championship winner early in the third. The Panthers survived a four-minute penalty and came away with a hard-earned trophy. “I was obviously happy for the kids to win the championship but I was more impressed with their growth throughout the season,” Arno said. Members of the Founders Cup champions include: Joey Parker; Dalton Morrison; Luke Hemenway; Sarah Dlugos; Dallas Johnson; Wesley Davis; Nicholas Williamson; Nicholas Durham; Tomas Loeffelman; Chase Loehr; Stuart Evans; David Piel; Justin Cole; Adam Ryffel; Mark Pearson; Jake Schaefer; and William Borner

Meramec Squirt A1 Sharks Win Dells Classic by David Michel – Meramec Sharks beat writer The Meramec Sharks Squirt A1 team pulled out their second tournament win of the season on Presidents Day at the Dells Water Park Classic. The team was able to pull out a win in overtime on a Connor Liebman goal just 53 seconds into OT. The road to get to the championship game was no easy task as the club went 2 and 1 in pool play and made it as the top seed into Monday’s matchup on the second tie breaker of goals against. The team started play on Saturday against the Stallions of the Saddle Hockey club. While the Sharks seemed to dominate the match, the Stallions were able to keep it close the entire game. With a rainmaker of a goal from Blake Kern at the 2 minute mark of the first period the Sharks were able to get on top early. The second goal for the Sharks came just one short minute later from Chase Christopher with an assist coming from Bryce Louis. With their team down 2-0 the Stallions best player Owen Kmety was able to net a goal with 8:25 on the clock in the first period making it 2-1. The Sharks were able to net yet another Chase Christopher goal in the second period at 9:46 with the assist coming for Zach Adamec. Christopher was able to redirect a laser from Adamec while the Stallion goalie was screened. With the Sharks up 3-1 Owen Kmety for the Stallions once again stepped up for his team and netted his second goal of the game at 5:39 in the second. The Sharks were able to hold the Stallions to just two shots in the second period and the Sharks walked away with the 3-2 victory on the frigid afternoon in Baraboo.

The second matchup in pool play saw the Sharks facing the Maulers out of Chicago. The Sharks again seemed to dominate play putting 30 shots on goal but where only able to net one of those shots. That lone goal came at 10:25 in the 3rd period, a beautiful goal from Jason Schnell with the assist from Danny Walters. The Maulers goalie, who one Meramec coach said was like “human velcro” was the difference

maker in the game. The Maulers were able to net goals in the first period and the game winner in the third with just 1:44 left on the clock. The 2-1 loss for Sharks meant that there next and final game in pool play was a must win. The Sharks third game in pool play pitted them against the 2-0 Arrowhead team of the Milwaukee area. The Sharks came out strong and looked to be on a mission in the first period.

Jack Michel netted the first goal at 9:11 in the first period taking the puck from coast to coast and betting the Arrowhead goalie in the upper left corner of the net. Then Danny Walters was able to put the Sharks up 2-0 with 1:36 left in the first with an unassisted goal in which he was able to avoid multiple defenders and wait for just the right moment to bury the puck in the net. The Sharks then went up 3-0 on a masterful goal from Wyatt Hill at 4:31 in the second period. Hill was able to shoot the puck from the corner of the ice and bank it off a defender and past the goal keeper and into the net. Arrowheads loan goal came with just 2:24 in the third period but it was too little too late and the Sharks held on to the victory 3-1. With three teams having records of 2-1 it came down to tiebreakers to see who would be a in the Championship game. Behind some solid goaltending from Christian Flamm the Sharks were able to win the second tie breaker of goals against and advance to the finals. The Championship game proved to an exciting one with neither team willing to give in. The first

period did not see any scoring as both teams looked to be evenly matched. Arrowhead was able to net the first goal of the match with 7:09 left in the second period. The Sharks answered back three minutes later with the tying goal from Kyle Budde and the assist coming from Zach Adamec. The Sharks then took the lead with 2:04 left in the second period with a goal from Ben Kleinschmidt and the assist from Bryce Louis. The Sharks held the 2-1 lead for over twelve minutes but with a minute left in the game Arrowhead pulled their goalie and started to apply the pressure to the Sharks. The Sharks were able to clear the puck twice but an icing call brought the face off down inside the Shark zone with less then 30 seconds remaining. With only 23 seconds left in the game Arrowhead was able to net the game tying goal sending the game to overtime. With both teams not wanting to give up and with victory in their sights it was going to be an exciting five minutes of sudden death overtime. Connor Liebman though had other thoughts. With less then 45 seconds gone in the overtime Connor got the puck in his own zone looked up the ice and found an opening. Wanting to end this game quickly, and most likely get on to the water park at Great Wolf, he took the puck the length of the ice passing all four Arrowhead defenders and expertly shot it pass their goalie on the near side sealing the Championship for the Sharks. While Connor was the hero of the moment, and rightfully so, it should be noted that this Championship win was a total team effort. No one player had more than two points for the entire tournament and only four of the fifteen skaters did not have any points at all. That is what I call a team effort.
