The times are a changing for the U19AAA Lady Blues. There are no longer the 9-0 and 10-0 losses from year’s past where opposing coaches complimented the team for giving good effort. The effort is still there but now so are the wins. The Lady Blues are currently ranked 16th nationally with ambitions of qualifying for the national tournament in March. And with the success on the ice have come opportunities for the young ladies to continue their hockey careers in college. “There are now a multitude of opportunities for these girls to play with on the Division I, Division III or ACHA (club) level,” Lady Blues coach Patrick Quinn said. “I think we are at a point where the boys were about 15 years ago. The girls are experiencing some of the same evolution as the guys. Things have picked up in that regard the last couple of years and I expect to continue that momentum and build in the future. We have some very talented players coming up.” Several members of this year’s team have made collegiate commitments while others are being recruited but have yet to make a choice. Seniors Katie Matheny, Claudia Escue and Alexis Toporowski have made their choices with Matheny headed to Ohio State University, Escue to Trinity College and Toporowski to Miami University in Ohio. Jessica Dunne, who is a junior, will join Matheny at Ohio State. Jincy Dunne is a mem-

ber of the USA U18 National team and will likely have her choice of many top programs when she makes her choice. Jincy is just a sophomore. Quinn said that senior Maddy Flesner is likely to play at a Division III school in Minnesota. Junior Allison Ullrich is another of the Lady Blues’ players who is being heavily recruited although she is undecided at this point. “We have some very bright girls on the team who will likely go to prestigious universities who also happen to have a hockey team,” Quinn said. Many of these girls stood out in other sports while in high school but have made the commitment to hockey. “All of these girls are accomplished athletes who excelled at lacrosse, field hockey, softball or soccer in high school,” Quinn said. “But hockey is now their passion. The biggest thing with this group is their commitment to excellence. I am very excited about the potential of this team this year. We have a shot at getting to Nationals. And I think their future going on is also very bright.” Members of this year’s U19AAA Blues include: Jessica Dunne; Katie Matheny; Jincy Dunne; Nicole Arnold; Allison Ullrich; Katie Reed; Sarah Sabo; Jackie Guy; Molly Quinn; Jessica Young; Miranda Roberts; Alexis Toporowski; Maddie Flesner; Heather Kraus; Kathryn Chamberlain; Jessie Rushing; Claudia Escue; and Carrera Noelscher.

Matthew Tkachuk Commits to Notre Dame www. stlaaablues.com Matthew Tkachuk, a forward with the U16 Midget Minor team for the St. Louis AAA Blues has verbally committed to the University of Notre Dame. Matthew is considered one of the top 1997-born forwards in the United States. This year, Matthew leads his U16 team in scoring and is fourth overall in the Tier

I Elite Hockey L e a g u e . Matthew plans to suit up for the Fighting Irish in the 2016-2017.

Bantam AA Rockets Win Cincinnati Mid-Winter Classic by Bill Hester - ‘Hockey Stop’ Correspondent’ The Rockets Bantam AA hockey team has had a solid 2012-13 season. They rank second in league play and have competed well in tournaments, including a second place finish in the Wishbone Tournament in Chicago in November. The one thing that was missing from the resume was a tournament title. That changed over the Martin Luther King weekend as the Rockets were quite impressive in capturing the 2013 Cincinnati Mid-Winter Classic Tournament sponsored by MyHockey Tournaments. The Rockets had a 4-0-1 record in their five games, which included three shutouts and a win over the Columbus Blue Jackets in the championship game. “We’ve played well against some teams locally but this was one of the best five game stretches we have had this season,” Rockets coach Matt Wertheimer said. “The team came together and played solidly as the three shutouts would show.” The shutouts, which came in roundrobin play came against the Columbus Blue Jackets (1-0), the Naperville Sabres (3-0) and the Charlotte Junior Checkers (5-0). Matthew Server recorded the shutouts in all games with tremendous help from the Rockets’ defense and forwards. The tie came against the Indiana Junior Ice (4-4). The Rockets, who were playing that game without Max Hunter, who was ill, came back from a third-period deficit in that game to take the lead only to see the Junior Ice score a power play goal in the final minute for the tie. The championship game was tight through most of the game. The Rockets had a great third period and won 4-2.

“The guys stuck to the game plan and started to finish their plays in the third period,” Wertheimer said. “They went to the net well and played to the whistle.” The three shutouts were certainly a highlight in the tournament but the Rockets also had some big games offensively. Jordan Stern, who moved from wing to center with Hunter out of the lineup, had a hat trick in the win over the Charlotte Junior Checkers. Jonah Schwartz closed out the tournament in style with a hat trick of his own in the championship game. “We scored some of the prettiest goals we have had all season,” Wertheimer said. The Rockets, who will be playing in Gateway President’s Day Tournament Feb. 16-18 at Hardee’s Ice Plex and the Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzville, improved to 25-11-4 for the season. Members of the Rockets Bantam AA squad include: Connor Aleksic; Ethan Alter; Tyler Bernstein; Riley Carnes; Davis Eurukawa; Max Hunter; Harold Hyman; Justin Koch; Payton Matulich; Zach Nall; Daniel Nogalski; Jonah Schwartz; Matthew Server; Brendan Shaughnessy; Jordan Stern; and Ryan Turkin.

The Steinberg Winter Classic The Steinberg Winter Classic was created by Mr. Joe Fresta, Jr., a two-time testicular cancer survivor and avid hockey player to benefit the Cancer Care Foundation. Remember those cold winter days? Skates tied over your shoulder with stick in hand, you arrived with anticipation of a good pick up game between friends. No matter how cold it got or how much it snowed, you could always rely on a bonfire to keep you warm and a shovel to remove the fallen snow. Reminiscent of those days, the historic Steinberg Ice Rink in St. Louis’ beautiful Forest Park will be the

Minnesota Junior Hockey League Standings

location of this outdoor, three-on-three hockey tournament. The 55-year old ice rink is the largest outdoor ice rink in the Midwest and will accommodate three games simultaneously over the three day tournament. Relive the memories and support a great cause at the 2nd Annual Steinberg Winter Classic March 1, 2 and 3, 2013 presented by Luxco and EverBank. All proceeds benefit the Cancer Care Foundation directly aiding local families with loved ones stricken with the disease. The Steinberg Winter Classic and Winter Carnival is open and FREE to the public! *The Steinberg Ice Rink management would like to strongly emphasize that ice hockey is NOT permitted at the Steinberg Ice Rink. The Steinberg Winter Classic is a one-time event and only takes place at the end of the skating season before closing for the year.

Jr. Blue forward Brycon Johnson has signed a tender to play for the Aberdeen Wings in 201314. Johnson is 3rd in team scoring and becomes the 2nd 1996 birth year Jr. Blues player to sign a tender for next year. Brycon is a 5’11” 185 lb left handed forward from St. Peter, Missouri. “Brycon has great hockey sense with a great work ethic, he is a strong skater with great speed. Brycon has his best hockey ahead of him and we look forward to him coming in and contributing next season,” said Aberdeen Head Coach Travis Winter. “The opportunity to play for Coach Winter was a big factor in signing with Aberdeen. Coach Beilsten spoke very highly of him after working with him while he was in Cedar Rapids (USHL). He has played DI hockey and that’s what I want to do too and I feel like he can help me get there,” said Johnson. Jr. Blues Head Coach J.P. Beilsten said, “Brycon has been outstanding for us this year. It’s because of players like Brycon that make our organization successful. I’m not sure that there is anyone that is as physically strong as Brycon on our team and he is hard to fight off the puck.” Johnson spent last week skating with the Wings and had a chance to play in a game against Bismarck over the weekend. While he didn’t find his way on to the score sheet, the team reported that Brycon had an outstanding game, strong physical play and great ice awareness. Johnson joins other Jr. Blues that have tendered for next year; Trey Dodd (Austin) and Kyle Meeh (Fairbanks), and Tyler Opilka, who was moved up to Springfield this season. There are several other current members that are making decisions on next season at the collegiate and junior hockey levels.

Trey Dodd Tenders With Austin www.stljrblues.com

St. Louis Jr. Blues forward Trey Dodd has signed a tender with the Austin Bruins of the NAHL. Dodd, one of the few 1996 birth year players in the NA3HL, committed to the Bruins earlier this week. After receiving a couple of offers for next year, Dodd spent some time skating with several teams during the winter break, including a couple of days with the Bruins. Dodd said, “Austin is a strong program, in fact at the top of their division this year, and their player turnover is pretty low. If you make the team, they make a commitment to you.” He continued, “I was looking for a place that I could go and continue to develop and grow, and I thought that this was the best fit for me.” Head Coach J.P. Beilsten said, “Trey was a great addition to our team this year. We knew that we wanted a strong core of young players, with a balance of older vets. With a 1996 birth year, you don’t really know how they are going to respond but Trey has been outstanding. He quick, one of the physically strongest players we have and he has a heavy shot for such a young player. He sees the ice well, but like all players needs to continue to develop if he wants to reach his goal of playing in college. Trey believes that Austin is going to help him get there.” In 27 games this season, Dodd has 23 points and is a +21.
