ANNUAL REPORT Department of Business
CONTENT
1
DEAR READERS,
The challenges of our time require a global perspective. This is one reason why internationalisation is one of the strategic goals of Fulda University of Applied Sciences. And that is why it is a great success for all of us: full membership of the European University Alliance E³UDRES².
It was a very exciting year at the Department of Business: in the area of teaching, the preparations for our new, highly innovative, degree programme in taxation were particularly important. In the area of research, it should be emphasised that the development of the academic mid-level faculty is making rapid progress and that seven doctoral students are currently conducting research at the department. International activities have been significantly strengthened by the university's membership in the European University Alliance E³UDRES². This enables the Department of Business to further sharpen its profile as an internationally oriented, research-intensive department with an innovative range of study programmes.
The Department of Business shows what opportunities E³UDRES² offers: Within just a few months, it has established a wide range of contacts and explored points of contact that will benefit teaching staff, researchers and students alike in the future. Find out more – about the activities surrounding E³UDRES² and everything else that has moved the Department of Business in the past year.

CITY OF FULDA HONOURS IBM STUDENTS
SPARKASSE PRIZE AWARDED
February saw the end of a challenging project for students in the first semester of the International Business & Management (B.Sc.) degree programme. The students took on roles in a marketing agency, deepened ideas in client meetings, documented project progress and produced an image film about Fulda. At the end, over 70 students, guests and lecturers Prof. Dr. Irina Kohler and Christian Diegmüller celebrated the innovative teaching format in a relaxed atmosphere. The city marketing of Fulda awarded a special prize and the winning team got to enjoy a guided tour of the city and an evening at the Havanna Bar.
Three university graduates were honoured for their outstanding achievements. Sparkasse Fulda has awarded its annual sponsorship prize for final theses. Two of the award-winning theses came from the Department of Business. Christin Rißeler analysed the “Concretisation of human rights due diligence by companies within sustainable finance” in her Bachelor's thesis in the Business Law degree programme. In his Master's thesis in the Accounting, Finance, Controlling programme, Jeremias Kümpel investigated the tax law aspects of tax groups in the event of insolvency and restructuring.
The project was successfully completed with the support of the Friends’ Association of the Department of Business.
Christian Markert, Member of the Board of Sparkasse Fulda, presented the awards together with Professor Dr. Claudia Kreipl, Vice President of Fulda University of Applied Sciences.

DELEGATION VISITS TO E³UDRES² PARTNER UNIVERSITIES
In the winter semester 2022/2023, the dual logistics management students went on an excursion to the port of Rotterdam and our partner university in Breda. In Rotterdam, they gained insights into the functionality of Europe's largest port and visited the World Port Center. A boat trip through the port and a bus trip to hard-to-reach parts of the port followed. This was followed by a visit to our partner university in Breda.
The Department of Business of Fulda University of Applied Sciences visited partner universities of the E³UDRES² Alliance: Saxion University (NL), UCLL (BE), Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences (LV), FH St. Pölten (AT) and JAMK – Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences (FI). The aim was to identify opportunities for collaboration in teaching and research. E³UDRES² is a European university alliance made up of nine universities of applied sciences. The delegation identified common interests in the development of study programmes, research projects and business start-ups.
After a guest lecture by Prof. Dr. Zimmermann and an exchange with the Master's students from Breda University of Applied Sciences, the group started their journey home to Frankfurt

CONTINUING EDUCATION
As part of the part-time MBA programme in General Management, five students made an overseas trip to South Africa from 24th June 2023 to 2nd July 2023. The journey focused on the economic and societal aspects of the country. In Cape Town, the group visited institutions including the German Chamber of Commerce and other local economic organizations. They were warmly welcomed in Bloemfontein by the University of the Free State. Among the various excursion destinations was the UFS Experimental Farm. The trip concluded with a collective debriefing and reflections on the experiences gathered.
Understanding financial connections and investments is the foundation for any decisionmaker. The ability to apply this complex knowledge to entrepreneurial decisions is often critical for a company's success. In the course of Investment and Financial Management Professor Dr. Maurer and Mr. Kretschmar provides participants with specific knowledge and competencies that they can effectively use in solving financial and investment-related tasks and issues in their professional field. Learning was deepened through practical case studies and seminar discussions.
EVENTS IN THE SIGN OF KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER
ENTREPRENEURIAL MINDSETS AND SKILLS AT FOCUS
In entrepreneurship, the entrepreneurial mindsets and skills are key competencies. Especially in today's era of rapid change, is becoming increasingly important to strengthen the entrepreneurial focus. In the course of Entrepreneurship & Innovation led by Professor Dr. Ehls, students engage in case studies related to the management of young businesses. They develop processes for lifecycle management, test them, and assess their benefits. Innovation processes in companies are developed based on practical cases and planned for market introduction. This allows students to step into the role of an entrepreneur.

MBA STUDY TRIP TO SOUTH AFRICA
Creativity is gaining increasing importance in the development of ideas in today's working world. Additionally, competencies are also required to further develop a creative idea into a convincing innovation, a successful business model, or a customer-friendly product. In the Idea Workshop course (Professor Dr. Ożga) and Case Studies (Professor Dr. Dölle and Mr. Kretschmar), students applied the competencies developed in previous courses to solve complex case studies. In addition, the solutions were persuasively presented and discussed before a group of potential investors or the company's management.

In November 2022, numerous members of the interdisciplinary and interdepartmental research and transfer centre “Fulda Centre for Business Management and Entrepreneurship (FU³)” met for their first members' event. The aim was to derive impulses from research, networking and transfer for the FU³. Prof. Dr. Angelika Sawczyn-Müller emphasised the bundling and coordination of these activities. The event included information on research funding and a workshop on networking. The participants developed topics on “research, networking and transfer” and presented results for future activities. PUBLICATION IN THE JOURNAL NEW PROJECT – TOKENISED OF CLIMATE FINANCE CARBON CREDITS
The results of a research project by Sebastian Oetzel (Fulda University of Applied Sciences), Mareike Sachse and Daniel Klapper (Humboldt University of Berlin) were presented at the AMS Annual Conference in New Orleans. The influence of the number of variants on a display during a promotion was tested in a field experiment. Promotions at the point of sale (POS) are an important tool for retailers and industry to generate additional sales. It was previously unclear how the number of product variants on the display affects sales.
The article “Portfolio Allocation and Optimization with Carbon Offsets: Is it Worth the While?” by Carsten Müller, Papa Orgen and Patrick Behr (published in the Journal of Climate Finance) shows that integrating compliance and voluntary carbon offsets into investment portfolios improves risk-adjusted performance (Sharpe ratio) and that compliance and voluntary carbon offsets are largely net volatility and return spillover recipients.
The results show that a greater variety of products increases sales without confusing shoppers.
These results, documented for the first time in the literature, could also encourage purely finance-oriented institutional and private investors to invest in such sustainable asset classes or climate protection projects.
New third-party funded research project on tokenised carbon credits, accountability, ESG and supply chains. In the TOSCA project group, Professors Carsten Müller and Dominik Skauradszun at the Centre Responsible Digitality together with researchers from the University of Kassel, the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management, Frankfurt UAS, Philipps-Universität Marburg and the Università della Svizzera italiana, are working this year and next on the question of how blockchain technology can be used to tokenise carbon credits and comply with ESG standards in global supply chains and how corresponding specifications can be verified.

What is the state of supply, demand and the associated logistics in Hesse? The aim of the LogRegio – basic research project, which ended in October 2023, was to find out. The answers are sobering: the demand for generally more expensive (organic) regional ingredients is more in the minds than in the wallets of canteen guests, the supply of plant-based food from Hessian farmers is neither sufficient nor diverse enough to achieve a healthy diet for the local population and, compared to European – generally very efficient – transport, local regional transport sometimes performs significantly worse in terms of CO₂ emissions. STUDENTS VISIT EINTRACHT FRANKFURT
VISIT TO THE “TRANSPORT AND LOGISTICS” FAIR
EXCURSION TO THE HIGHER REGIONAL COURT
Last year, the Let's Talk! event series once again offered exciting discussions on current topics from business, society, culture and technology. Videos, interviews and guest speakers provided impetus for students and lecturers to engage in dialogue on an equal footing in a relaxed atmosphere. Whether it was about social background, climate change, artificial intelligence or happiness, there was always plenty to say and hear.
Students of International Business Management (B.Sc.) visited Eintracht Frankfurt e.V. to gain insights into international marketing. Nina Wiegand, a Master's student in International Management (M.Sc.), shared her experiences in international marketing at the club. It was interesting to hear which target groups and target markets are considered strategically important. The excursion also included the Eintracht Museum and stadium tours. Even football fans from other clubs were enthusiastic.
Students of the Master's programme Supply Chain Management visited the “Transport and Logistics” fair 2023 in Munich. They explored various exhibitors, exchanged views on telematics, supply chain solutions and cloudbased procurement. Especially telematics and transparency in supply chains were focus topics. At lunchtime, they visited the Geis Group stand and gained insights into corporate philosophy, innovation and sustainability.
Business law students visited the Higher Regional Court in Frankfurt am Main and attended a court hearing. The highest civil court in Hesse is the Oberlandesgericht (Higher Regional Court) in Frankfurt am Main. Its civil senates usually decide cases with three professional judges. On the day of the excursion, the 4th Civil Senate was hearing a case on the avoidance of transactions relating to contestable legal acts prior to the opening of insolvency proceedings. Judge Professor Dr Dominik Skauradszun, LL.M. is a member of this senate and presided over the hearing and gave the students a tour of the court. .
The participants contributed their different perspectives, experiences and opinions and the discourse was always lively. The concept, which has been running since 2021, met with great interest and will be continued in the following year.

We are grateful for the insights and wish Eintracht Frankfurt much success for their future football games.
After an informative day, they returned to Fulda and thanked Hans Geis GmbH + Co KG for the invitation.

DIGITALISATION EXPERIENCED LIVE AT FFT
Students from the “Digital Business” module of the IBM degree programme visited FFT, a leading company in the digitalisation of flexible manufacturing systems with headquarters in Fulda. With 30 participants, including professors, they gained impressive insights into robotics, augmented reality and the company's digital solutions. During the tour of part of the production hall, the students were given an insight into the assembly of systems, which often involve hundreds of robots. The tour of a robot cell, which demonstrated the coordinated work of two robots, was particularly fascinating. The visit offered practical experience and demonstrated the importance of digitalisation.

INNOVATIVE DEGREE PROGRAMME IN TAXATION STARTS
Every semester, the Sponsoring Association (Förderverein) of the Department of Business offers 3 scholarships in the amount of € 500. In the reporting period of the Annual Report 2023, 6 scholarships were awarded. The aim is to provide financial support for outstanding students who have already completed a semester abroad or an internship abroad or who will do so in the future.
The Fulda University of Applied Sciences and the Chamber of Tax Advisors of Hesse are launching the dual Bachelor's degree programme in Taxation in the winter semester of 2023/24. After four semesters, students can take the tax assistant examination. The degree programme offers three perspectives in taxation: tax firms, tax authorities and corporate tax departments. Each practical phase provides different experiences. Students sign contracts with practice partners and complete 13-week practical phases per semester. A fifth semester allows for a practical semester at home or abroad or lectures at a university abroad.
We would like to once again congratulate the winners of the scholarships of the Association of Sponsors, Mr Aha, Mr Attiqi, Ms Rimsha, Ms Schäfer, Mr Schuster and Ms Will, and wish them continued success in their future endeavours.
