SUMMER VIBES
From soul to surf rock with a twist, Summer Sounds brings free live music to beautiful outdoor spaces in Hobsons Bay.
Williamstown’s waterfront will come alive on Saturday 24 January with soul collective Velvet Bloom, celebrated solo artist and leading lady of soul-funk band The Bamboos, Kylie Auldist, and Melbourne artist and Wiradjuri woman Ruby Mae.
New Orleans style brass band Horns of Leroy, acclaimed singer-songwriter Adrian Eagle and homegrown musicians Hobsons Bay Coast Guard will take to the stage on Saturday 14 February at Altona’s Logan Reserve. KNOW? DID YOU
Chris Loftis from the six-piece band Hobsons Bay Coast Guard is excited to play at Summer Sounds.
“We love playing outdoors. Most of our music is about the ocean or weather in general so it always feels much more natural to be playing it out where the action happens. And to play out near the beach where we grew up will be extra special,” said Chris.
Chris remembers jumping off Altona Pier on hot days, skating around the neighbourhood and jamming in his garage.
Since Hobsons Bay Coast Guard’s inception in 2017, the band has been performing fun and captivating live shows.

“We’ve always been driven by three main ideas: that our music should be fun, that it should be surprising and that it should be something that we would want to hear in the world that we haven’t yet,” said Chris.

STAYING SAFE OVER SUMMER
When the temperature soars and the likelihood of extreme weather increases, we need to take extra care to look after ourselves and each other.
Heat waves
• Avoid going out in the hottest parts of the day
• Keep hydrated by drinking water
• Keep your home cool by closing blinds, windows and doors
• Regularly check in with friends and neighbours, especially if they are living alone
• Check the Bureau of Meteorology website for warnings: bom.gov.au
Snakes
• Over summer, snakes may bask in the sun in our parks and reserves. If you see a snake, please leave it alone, as in most cases they are in their natural habitat. If a snake is of concern to you, please call us on 1300 179 944.
Bushfires
• You can’t control fire, but you can control how you prepare. Before travelling to a fire risk area, check the weather forecasts and the fire danger rating. While travelling, tune into the local radio station for fire alerts and check the VicEmergency website and app.
Accessible Beaches program
Swimming
• Like all beaches in the bay, avoid storm water pollution and don’t go swimming after heavy rainfall. You can check the water quality on the EPA website: epa.vic. gov.au/check-air-and-water-quality
• Beach wheelchairs are available to hire for free on weekends and public holidays at Altona and Williamstown beaches as part of the Accessible Beaches program. The program is delivered with generous support from the Altona Life Saving Club, Williamstown Swimming and Life Saving Club and local traders. Accessible changing facilities are available at both locations. To book and find out more, visit hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au/ AccessibleBeaches
• When available, swim between the flags.
• If you have a pool or spa on your property, it must be registered with Council and there must always be a safety barrier around the pool or spa.

RECYCLING FOOD: TIPS TO GET STARTED
We get it – recycling food scraps can be messy. But it doesn’t have to be. Start with dry, low-odour scraps like bread, fruit skins, and veggie offcuts. It’s an easy, mess-free way to make a real difference.
Fast fact: When food goes to landfill, it produces methane, a greenhouse gas more than 25 times stronger than carbon dioxide. That’s why every little food scrap we keep out of landfill is a win!

NEW SPORT AND RECREATION ADVISORY GROUP
ADDS VALUE
Community representatives from eight sports clubs across Hobsons Bay have provided key community sport insights to help shape new Council policies.
Following an expression of interest process, the group was formed and met in October and November to discuss key pieces of work, which included:
2026 WASTE AND RECYCLING CALENDAR
Your 2026 waste and recycling calendars are on their way. Distribution is happening throughout the first half of December, so keep an eye on your letterbox.
If you haven’t received yours by 22 December 2025, you can pick one up for free from any Council+ location, including libraries and community hubs.
You can also download a copy, view the interactive map, or learn how to get the new bin app on our website.
• the Sport and Recreation Allocations, Fees and Charges Policy
• the Club Funded Capital Works Policy
• development of an updated Facility User Guide.
Paul Walshe from Newport Baseball Club enjoyed being involved in the process.
“I’m very happy to have been part of the sport and recreation advisory group. I hope my experience as a volunteer community sports club administrator can assist the council in supporting local clubs and initiatives,” Paul said.
CHRISTMAS TREE DROP-OFF DAY
Once the presents are unwrapped and decorations packed away, what do you do with your Christmas tree?
If you have a real tree, bring it along to our annual Christmas tree drop-off day to be processed into compost –it might even help grow a future Christmas tree!
Saturday 10 January, 9am to 2pm Hobsons Bay Operations Centre, Sugar Gum Drive, Altona
“It’s also been valuable learning more about the challenges and financial aspects of Council’s sport and recreation operations, which further strengthens the strong relationship our club has with Council.”
Sports clubs and the community will be able to provide feedback on these policies in 2026 on participate.hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au

BETTER CITY BUILDING A
GREENING INDUSTRIES
We’re working with private landowners in industrial areas to plant more trees and increase the tree canopy and biodiversity in our industrial areas.
This year, we’ve planted 2,736 trees and shrubs seedlings in industrial areas through the Greening Industries program. About a third of all land in Hobsons Bay is industrial, yet only one tenth of the total urban tree canopy is in industrial areas.
Our Greening Industries program includes three programs:
• Tree planting - supports large scale planting of seedlings and advanced trees
• Habitat gardens – transforming business gardens into havens for local wildlife with free indigenous plants
• Weed management and pest control –helps protect natural resources.
If you work in an industrial area, help us spread the word and suggest the Greening Industries program to your employer. Landowners in industrial areas can apply for one or all of the above programs.
PATTERNS AIM TO SLOW TRAFFIC
We’re trialling decorative asphalt called DuraTherm on Alma Avenue in Altona Meadows to improve road safety.
The bright colours and honeycomblike pattern, in combination with the rumbling sound effects it causes, signals drivers to slow down.
DuraTherm is specifically designed for high-traffic areas such as crosswalks, shared zones, and streetscapes.
During community consultation, we heard Alma Avenue was experiencing high vehicle speeds, and residents and traders were keen on improved safety.
In addition to the DuraTherm treatment next to the shops and playground, speedhumps and additional signage were also used to reduce speeding.
The streetscape treatment is part of a local trial to determine the effectiveness of reducing vehicle speeds. Used only in specific circumstances, DuraTherm is just one way we're making our local streets safer.
MAINTAINING AND PROTECTING SANDY POINT
Sandy Point Nature Reserve in Newport is a haven for native plants, animals and migratory birds. The reserve is surrounded by the bay, with excellent views to Williamstown and Port Melbourne harbour.
Birdwatchers are often delighted by rare and endangered birds feeding on the mudflats.
We’ve recently upgraded the boardwalk and seating area to ensure the reserve can be enjoyed for generations to come.
Our conservation rangers work alongside the Friends of Greenwich Bay to protect and enhance the Newport foreshore. To volunteer with the Friends of Greenwich Bay, email ranger@hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au
You can access the Sandy Point Nature Reserve from Greenwich Reserve or along the Hobsons Bay Trail.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
Every weekend, Williamstown resident Olivia Richardson sets aside time and visits the aged care home Calvary Trugo Place in Newport. Sometimes she brings her toddler, and pet dog, Buttons.
Through the Australian Government’s Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme (ACVVS), managed by MS Plus, Olivia is paired with an older person who is lonely and in need of company.
“The people I visit have dementia or early onset. Just being there every week, listening and sharing stories, reminds them that they’re not alone,” Olivia said.
SUMMER FUN FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
Our youth services team has collated all the best free and low-cost activities for young people over the summer.
The Summer in the Bay 2026 booklet includes the youth services school holiday program, workshops, exhibitions and live music. Join Hobsons Bay Youth Services
“I bring part of the outside world to them, so they feel valued and don’t feel so isolated. It takes a few visits to work out what are the best conversations and what triggers their longterm memories.”
For Olivia, it’s also a chance to feel connected to the community and know that she can help someone.
“I come away with perspective and purpose,” said Olivia.
“I’m able to slow down, put the phone away and connect with another person in a genuine way.”
and learn to surf at URBNSURF, design a henna tattoo, learn how to skateboard or come along on an op shop tour.
There are more than 30 activities scheduled over January and February for young people 12 to 25 years old. Some events require advanced booking, and age restrictions vary depending on the activity.
Keep an eye out for the Summer in the Bay booklet in the community or your local library. To book or for information, visit hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au/youngpeople
“He doesn’t have any grandparents living close by so it’s a great way for him to connect to older people; he waves to everyone, and older people appear more lively when they see little people walking around.”
The ACVVS program is funded by the Australian Government and is a free service available for any older person in aged care or at home with a home care package.
All volunteers are screened, undertake police and referee checks, complete comprehensive training and are provided with ongoing support by a dedicated program coordinator.
“Anyone who has time, empathy and enjoys conversation should volunteer with ACVVS,” said Olivia.
“There’s no special skills; you just need a kind heart and show up consistently either weekly or fortnightly to show you care.”

LIBRARY NEWS
READ OVER THE SUMMER HOLIDAYS AND WIN!
The Big Summer Read is back and it’s bigger than ever before. Register for free and read during the summer break for your chance to win great prizes.
The annual reading competition is open to anyone aged up to 18 and every young reader who visits a Hobsons Bay Library to sign up will receive a gift.
Primary school and pre-primary (early years) readers will go into the draw to win one of eight Big Summer Read showbags and young adults will have the chance to win one of eight $60 vouchers.
There will also be prizes for the top reader at each participating school, which will be announced in February 2026.
“It’s all about increasing children’s and young people’s literacy and encouraging reading during the summer break,” said our family engagement and learning team leader, Eilidh Dragovic.
“Statistics show children and young people's literacy skills can decrease by up to three months over the summer period. The great news is that we can prevent this ‘summer slide’.
“Reading together or independently, and listening to audiobooks, means students can come back to school ready to kick off the school year, instead of falling behind.”
To enter the Hobsons Bay Big Summer Read competition, parents and young adults must have a library membership. It’s free to join and you can join online or at one of our libraries or community hubs.
“Our goal is to support school teachers, carers and parents to provide further opportunities for young people to engage with literacy through any kind of resource available from our libraries,” said Eilidh.
“We want young people to dive into the endless worlds of adventures that can be explored through books. To make reading a joyful, calming experience, rather than a chore.”
SIGN ME UP!
Young readers can register for the Big Summer Read at Hobsons Bay Libraries, either online, or in person, at any of our libraries or community hubs. You can also sign up for the statewide competition for chances to win the Public Libraries Victoria prizes.
Then what?
Log either a book or every 20 minutes of reading. If you read for one hour, you can log it three times.
What counts?
All books, ebooks and audiobooks count – fiction, non-fiction, cookbooks, graphic novels, comics and magazines. Through your library membership, you also get free access to Story Box Hub, Borrow Box and Lote for Kids (a multilingual and bilingual app). Hobsons Bay Libraries have books available in large print, as well as fonts more suitable for readers with dyslexia.
EILIDH’S TOP TIP
Listen to audiobooks as a family on road trips or when driving to a friend’s house or to the shops; it’ll make the car ride more pleasant and adds to your chance of winning!

CHANGED TRAFFIC CONDITIONS NEW YEAR’S EVE
The Strand, Nelson Place and Commonwealth Reserve in Williamstown are popular locations to view Melbourne’s fireworks display across the water.
We’re working with Victoria Police to ensure the area is safe for residents and visitors.
Changed traffic conditions, including temporary road closures, will be in place along The Strand, Nelson Place and surrounding streets in Williamstown and Newport on New Year’s Eve (31 December).
This will ensure emergency vehicles can access the area if needed and support the number of people who will be gathering along the foreshore in Williamstown and Newport.
Impacted roads will be closed from 5.30pm on Wednesday 31 December until 1.30am on Thursday 1 January 2026. Open fires, fireworks and barbecues along the foreshore and in reserves are prohibited.
The Strand, Nelson Place, Commonwealth Reserve and the foreshore are alcohol-free zones.
For details, visit hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au/RoadClosures or customer service on 1300 179 944.

All the trials and tribulations
Are worth the trouble.
Each tribulation will teach you a lesson.
Each lesson will form a branch. Each branch will form a tree. You are the roots and the trunk. Wherever you plant yourself, you will grow.
Under rigorous conditions, You can wither or thrive.
Surround yourself with people who help you grow. Find the beauty in hard times — For they are just a test. This trouble will soon pass. And then, you will blossom: New branches, new leaves, Forming wisdom along the way.
Henry, 12 Under 18 category winner
Hey, younger me — stop rushing. You won’t always have the people you love, so hug them longer, laugh louder, and say what you mean. You’ll lose things that feel like the end of the world — and somehow, still wake up. Grief will come, but so will joy. Let both in. To older me — I hope you still dance in the kitchen, cry during movies, and dream like no one ever told you to be realistic. If you're scared, it's okay. Just don’t stop living with your whole heart. And please… don’t forget how far we’ve come.
PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION
