For my capstone, I researched the mental health of Workaholics. I realized what these intensive workers need the most is to disconnect from working physically. However, the restroom - one of the spaces these employees can physically do so - is currently designed to restrict them resting: a boring design, insufficient amenities, gendered specific, ect...

Therefore, this project is about re-defining the restroom within the healthcare working environment (one of those industries that have a considerate number of intensive workers).

Tackling the mentality of the workaholics, REST. room aims at bringing the REST aspect back into the space through the use of innovative materials and design language.

I placed my project within the Emergency Department of Cincinnati Children’s Hospital (Cincinnati, Ohio, US). Per my research and interview, these ED workers work intensively for long hours. They are urgently in need of a place to disconnect from their work to recharge their energy and digest their overwhelming emotions. However, the current layout with scattered amenities restricts them to seek rest due to the pressure of transition between spaces. In addition, current amenities are insufficient for relaxation.

The floor plan is laid out symmetrically to give users equal opportunity to access any amenities. There are also different levels of privacy with various enclosures. Public spaces are placed toward the front for easy access, and privacy level increases as users approach deeper inside. Since this is an allgender restroom, spaces will be coded to 3 main colors with imaginary signages (on private areas’ doors) to foster intuitive movement through the space.

The double-sided sinks are placed toward the front so that the users can easily access it from either side. The sinks in the back with integrated lockers and frameless mirrors divide the space while not blocking the light from the window wall.

The workers there frequently face emergency cases making them feel overwhelmed. Hence, these pods are placed both toward the front for a quick recharge and in the back for a longer recovery. As there are many nurse moms and pregnant nurses working overnight, these wellness rooms are dedicated to these workers. These spaces are coded in a color tone different from the other two to signal its special function, with solid doors for complete privacy and security.

TENTFO

This project is about creating an info-point for people visiting Schönbuchburm. Other functions (such as marketing strategies for local fruit, bicycle repair station, and area to park bikes) are also to be included. Two available options for the site include the Parking Lot and the Bus Stop. Additionally, the structure is to be open and permeable wooden construction as a pavilion. The design should be able to sustain on its own.

Our design solution is Tentfo, an info-point that takes the shape of a tent for durability with flexible enclosures. All amenities are arranged strategically along two sides of the structure.

Since the building mainly opens to the public and is required to sustain on its own, we used two main materials: wood and photovoltaic tiles. The wood triangular shingles serve as the main coverage to enclose the interiors from the road and to attract the visitors. As the façade faces toward the South, the dark colored solar panels are placed on a sloped roof to capture sunlight and preserve energy for e-bike chargers and the outlets underneath the bench. The transparent tiles shaped in triangular form (on the top of the roof) serve as windows to open up the space while still protecting occupants from rain and snow.

Section 1 1 As the design is accessible to the public while requiring a certain level of privacy for security insides, the metal pivoting wall can serve as a flexible enclosure. It can be rotated up to 90 degrees to be a secondary entrance. The glass panels on the wall are frosted so that it provides privacy while still bringing light into the inside.

The local fruit is stored inside slidable shelvings, so that visitors can take the fruit from far back. The backpacks and helmets can be put inside tilt-out lockers located in the next sections. These lockers can be secured using physical locks provided on site. Other amenities (such as bike repair tools, first-aid kits, and defibrillator) are located in the last shelving. Info about the local fruits and the Schönbuchburm is condensed into flyers that are tucked into the sloped panels.

ECO HOME

This competition explores the beauty of interior design through the lens of colors.

Under advanced tier for residential category, the project must be designed in mid-century modern style, locate in Las Vegas, and not exceed 2000 sq.ft. Of which, 200 sqft to be reserved for private office and homework area; 15 sqft (within one of common spaces) for craft and play corner for youngest child.

My project is a house designed for a family of four in the suburbs of Las Vegas. The palette reflects a summer vibe for a fresh and relaxing feeling with rich Las Vegas signatures woven throughout. I used natural light to light up the space during the day and natural ventilation to cool the air.

Aligning with the vibe of Las Vegas, the overall theme is surrounding the summer season. To soothe the perceived hotness and dryness to proximity to deserts, the palette is kept cool and fresh with vibrant colors balanced out by neutral earthy tones.

The gathering spaces are located on the 1st floor with an open layout. The private ones are up on the 2nd floor. Most of the walls are softened for the safety of the children. To bring in more daylight and encourage natural ventilation, large openings with overhangs are placed throughout.

The kitchen is a symphony of colors with the serving island in mustard playing as the “main singer”. in baby blue along with natural light coming from windows above visually opens the kitchen upwa ceiling creates a smooth transition from the living room to the dining area. DRAG QUEEN

Growing up, I found there was lots of misunderstanding about people in the LGBTQ+ community in my city - Hanoi. I realized this was part of the little exposure of this topic to the residents. Consequently, many in the community chose to either not reveal or implicitly show themselves under different masks - one of which was Drag Queens. However, places to host their performances were very limited.

Therefore, I designated this project for the Drag Queens in my home city. I wanted to use this place to bring the people in the community closer to the remaining parts of the residents. In our culture, the color purple was iconically referred to this community.

The performances of Drags were also often hosted in the evening. Therefore, I centered my main design around Light and Color.

With the location at the center in downtown my city, I wanted this structure to capture as much atte the exposure of the community to the city residents. During the day, my design serves as an educa community. Works and outstanding achievements that celebrities in LGBTQ community have done walls both inside and outside. I centered my design around Lighting. Light highlights the contrast between what people see (dur (at night). Light also marks the moment when the real personality of the people in LGBTQ+ commun connection between my design and the surrounding. The downtown is mostly activated at night w conceptual color as an implication toward the LGBTQ+ community. 5 SPACES

This project explores a series of five spaces for people to occupy, move through, around and between. Each of the spaces was designated to a function. The design was to be placed on a given site in Burnet Wood (Cincinnati, OH).

I chose to design a residential home.

My concept was a summer house in the woods. With the site surrounded by nature, I focused on two main aspects: Daylight and View.

I approached this project as a summer house in the woods. To keep the space decluttered and m used the craft of the structure to create functions inside rather than bringing in furniture.

I wanted to create a calming and relaxing experience for the users. Therefore, wood was used as the m throughout, due to its visually pleasing appearance. I also found a structure out of wood would blen given site better. During the site visit, I found that physical access to nature enhanced my mood sign Thus, I created large openings to encourage exposure to nature, by blurring the boundary between ins outside.
