MAASTO Truck Parking Information Management System

MAASTO’s Truck Parking Information Management System (TPIMS) is a federally funded mobility solution that’s providing truck drivers, fleet managers and owner-operators with up-tothe-minute parking information along the major freight corridors throughout the eight MAASTO member states.

HNTB collaborated with the MAASTO regional partnering states as general engineering consultant. With more than 130 public and private sites, the project utilizes dynamic message signs, smart phone applications, traveler information sites and other means at rest areas and participating private truck stops across the MAASTO region.

The eight partner states and the Federal Highway Administration anticipate TPIMS will continue to improve the safety and efficiency of America’s freight network. With support from HNTB’s staff, MAASTO’s successful grant application was able to heavily contribute to the $35 million in state and federal funding attributed to the first-of-itskind transportation system.

US-23 Flex Route

As part of state’s first active traffic management (ATM) project, the Michigan Department of Transportation’s US-23 Flex Route project creates a safer and more timely driving experience for Michigan drivers. As the prime consultant, HNTB led design firms for the planning, design, design assistance during construction and system management of the intelligent transportation system (ITS).

The US-23 Flex Route uses overhead lane control gantries equipped with various ITS equipment to facilitate the following ATM strategies: dynamic shoulder use, dynamic lane control, variable speed advisories and queue warning. A real-time truck parking information and management system (TPIMS) features the delivery of real-time truck parking availability information to truck drivers along the US-23 Flex Route, and the overheight vehicle detection system provides a warning for overheight vehicles to exit US-23 to avoid low bridges on the corridor.
