HISTORY of the Lodge at Blue Springs

Cason and Virginia Callaway originally built the four-bedroom cottage adjacent to this house in 1930 after purchasing 2500 acres here in Harris County on August 12 of that year. Fuller Callaway Jr. and his wife Alice built this house in 1931. Both houses were originally planned to be weekend country places for the couples to commute to from LaGrange, GA 30 miles away. Virginia and Alice Callaway were sisters who had married the Callaway brothers in 1920 and 1930 respectively. The original rooms of the house included the living room, kitchen, the yellow bedroom, the library, which was originally a bedroom, and the butterfly room, which was also a bedroom. The original contract for construction states “logs to be provided by owner.” The stone used in the construction of the fireplaces was quarried on Callaway property. The well-known Atlanta architectural firm Ivey and Crook designed the house. The firm also designed the bedroom wing added in 1937 at which time the upstairs rooms were also completed. It was at this time that Cason and Virginia Callaway made this their principal residence. The pool/ greenhouse area was added in 1955. The 14-acre lake in front of the house was the first of many lakes to be built by Cason. He named it Lake Ida for his mother, Ida Cason Callaway. This house is located 3 miles from the actual ‘blue springs’ which inspired the Callaway’ s to visit here and eventually move here from LaGrange in 1938. Cason retired from Callaway Mills that same year and turned over its operation to his younger brother Fuller. The Callaway’s divided 40,000 acres in Harris County among their three children: this homesite, and the Gardens during the early 1950s. The house and surrounding buildings were listed in The National Register of Historic Places in 2002.
