Design Brief Lantern of Hope advocates the “Displaced Community” aims to close the gap between the local community and the displaced community, balancing the tension between invasion and exclusion without promoting the foreign culture while making everyone feel welcome and hopeful. Through shared sentiment and communal activities of the Candle factory and workshop, the idea seeks to enforce sustained healing and assistance for the current and incoming displaced communities.

Immersed in various scents, creating unique identity to different spaces with carefully curated aromas evoking healing spatial experience. Nevertheless, the aromatic candles in hope of rejuvenating displaced people minds and bodies, at least during the moment while they are at Lantern of Hope.

DESIGN PROPOSAL

The Candle light tower rises tall and bright, monumenting wishes and hopes, with the rhythmic light trail extending from Redfern Station and advancing swiftly towards Eveleigh Green.

Selected Site is proposed with minimal distrubtion to the exising site as well as in consideration to connect the redfern displaced community to South Eveliegh where middle/ upper class area without discriminating any group of people.

Shaded green spaces sandwich between the programmes to soften the space, creating relaxing and comforting atmosphere.

Riased ramp provides natural flow in transitioning.

Since the project is mainly aiming for the displaced people, the purpose is to create therapeutic effects with calming ambience of candlelight.

By integrating aroma in the candle can enhance the emotional, mental and physical well-being of the visitors. This will also enhance the holistic sensorial experience in architecture, narrating different scent at different spaces, creating unique identity of the specific space. Moreover, the scent are selected in consideration of the spatial experience from welcoming to grounding to rejuvinating. Nevertheless, the aromatic candkes in hope of elevating displaced people mind and body, rejuvinate at least during the moment while they are at Lantern of Hope.

Thatched Roof I

With the polycarbonate facade, the building is covered by second thatched roof exposing the weather.

Thatched roof protect from UV and will naturally cooling down the roofed area up to 10 degree in summer compared to metal roofing. Thatched roof to be used in this project is 99-100% waterproof type by Island Thatch. It is also highly durable with free from condensation.
