COALINGA ARTS STATION
Fall 2024
Coalinga, CA
Coalinga Art Station is an adaptation and improvement of the existing Sunset Elementary School Cafeteria in Coalinga, California, a rural city in the eastern foothills of the Central Valley that was founded on the back of the oil industry. The Art Station serves the elementary school students of Coalinga, an under-served limb of the county. This creates a baseline of creative cultivation in the education of Coalinga’s youth. Coalinga Art Station also services the greater Coalinga community by offering low-cost evening arts program for adults, summer classes, and art therapy.
The project takes design inspiration from the surrounding agricultural vernacular of barns and warehouses. The interventions live within the existing urban fabric of Coalinga and retain a small town scale. Coalinga Art Station uses the vernacular of agricultural buildings to create daylight-filled flexible spaces out of an existing building. This project is a net-zero adaptive reuse building constructed with regenerative and non-toxic materials. The building is regulated through the use of passive design strategies such as integrated shading and daylighting and passive chilled beam cooling systems throughout.

PIAZZA DEI CIOMPI
Fall 2023
Florence, IT
Piazza dei Ciompi is situated north of Piazza Santa Croce and close to Piazza Sant’Ambrogio. It is a simple little square that was only opened in the 1930s when some blocks in the Santa Croce neighborhood were demolished for renewal. It was rebuilt in the Piazza Ciompi only in 1956, re-using most of the original materials. The Loggia, as it stands today in Piazza dei Ciompi, is formed by nine wide arcades, supported by piers or columns. On each side are eight medallions depicting fishing activities and the sea.
The redesign of the Piazza dei Ciompi and its central fenced garden with the proposal for a new branch of library and kindergarten, public piazza, and children’s playground, all intended as a facility for the neighborhood. The project is based on the privacy versus public circulation in the existing piazza. The program is planned with the circulation where the library is upfront along the Loggia del Pesce and the kindergarten is near the residential neighborhood. In addition, the building has preserved spaces of the existing piazza. Such as the setbacks based on the street creating a courtyard between the library and kindergarten. In addition, the front of the library has a setback from the loggia to create the space of a piazza.

PRIVATE PUBLIC

MT. WILSON SCIENTISTS
Mount Wilson is one of the peaks of the San Gabriel Mountains, located north of Pasadena. There are unobstructed views across the Los Angeles basin of the Pacific Ocean from the summit. Nestled amidst nature, this retreat combines modern design elements with sustainable architecture to create a harmonious balance between human ingenuity and the natural world.
Pathways and trails weave through the property, connecting the various structures while encouraging exploration and interaction with nature. The centerpiece of the retreat is the main building, closer to the main pathway, an architectural marvel that serves as the hub for research and communal activities. The residential building is located adjacent to the main building, providing private, comfortable living spaces for the retreat’s guests. Both buildings feature a sleek, contemporary design with large glass windows that offer panoramic views of the surroundings. Interior spaces are divided on diagonal walls provided with the structure as a threshold for program placement.

MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY
JAPANESE ART
Located in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles, the 20,000-square-foot museum for Contemporary Japanese Art connects to Little Tokyo’s historic and cultural fabric. Nearby significant institutions include the Japanese American National Museum (JAAM), the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center (JACC), The Aratani Theater, Noguchi Plaza, and MOCA Geffen. The project is located along 1st Street in a vacant infill lot, surrounded by buildings on both sides. The Museum of Japanese Contemporary Art is an anchor for culture and public life and a connector from 1st Street to San Pedro Street and 2nd Street. The museum houses rotating exhibitions of contemporary Japanese artists and serves community resources with programs such as community classrooms, auditoriums, and cafes.
This museum accommodates a variety of art installations, including large sculptures and installations that engage the space, and art typically hung on walls, such as painting and photography. The circulation of the curved staircases follows the spatial condition to project a relationship as a connection of natural lighting. The tension between art experience and social activities happens in the lobby, on stairs, in the cafe or bookstore, and in the in-between spaces where visitors can take a break from art and relax.
