HMS encourages all students to seek support from outside funding sources. Students should visit the scholarship sponsor’s website for the most current information regarding deadlines and application requirements.

The following list contains a sample of external funding sources that may interest U.S. Citizens, Permanent Residents and DACA students pursuing their MD degree at HMS. This list is designed to help you with your search, but is not meant to be comprehensive but shows a sample of awards that are granted to students from around the world.

Many community organizations, scholarship search engines, and libraries also have information on external funding opportunities which we encourage students to utilize.

General Scholarships

Harvard College Library – Houghton Library: Philip Hofer Prize for Book and Art Collecting Scholarship offered to undergraduates and graduates who showcase a book or art collection.

Hawai’i Community Foundation

Offers a variety of scholarships to residents of Hawai’i who demonstrate financial need and are pursuing undergraduate or graduate studies full-time.

Leo Adler Scholarship

Open to graduate students. Applicants must be graduate from a high school located in Baker County, Oregon and North Powder, Oregon.

LULAC National Scholarship Fund

Scholarship awarded to US citizens, permanent residents, or DACA recipients to help defray to cost of tuition based on academic achievement. Awards range from $250 to $2,000. Graduate students must have applied or be enrolled in a part-time program.

The Sallie Mae Bridging the Dream Scholarship for Graduate Students

Must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident currently enrolled at least half-time at an accredited graduate level program. Interested applicants will be required to upload a short video about their passion for advancing social justice. Amount: $10,000.

Tylenol Scholarship

Provides scholarships to well deserving students pursuing careers in healthcare.

Offers a variety of scholarships to medical school students.

AAUW

Offers scholarships to women who are pursuing an MD degree.

American Medical Association Dr. Arthur Wilson Scholarship

Open to current medical students who graduated from a high school in Southeast Alaska.

American Medical Women’s Association

Offers a variety of scholarships to currently enrolled female medical students

American Society of Hematology

Offers scholarships to underrepresented minorities pursuing an MD degree. Applicants must be interested in hematology or hematology research.

Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC)

Offers various scholarship opportunities to MD students.

Association of Black Cardiologists

Offers various scholarships to medical students whose main focus is to promote diversity in medicine.

Berkshire District Medical Society

Open to medical students who are a resident of Berkshire County, Massachusetts.

Boston North Cancer Association

Offers an $8,000 scholarship to a medical student who is interested in cancer care and treatment. Students must have attended a high school in Essex County, MA.

Bowdoin College Medical Fellowships

Preference goes to Bowdoin College graduates who are eligible for financial assistance in their 1st year of medical school. Residents of Maine who have graduated from other colleges are eligible.

The Buzz RX Bee Healthy Scholarship Program

Open to full-time graduate students who are enrolled in a healthcare-related program.

The Charles River District Medical Society

Open to medical students who are a legal resident of one of the five towns compromising the district: Needham, Newton, Waltham, Wellesley, and Weston in Massachusetts.

Chinese American Medical Society

Open to all first, second- and third-year medical students.

Chinese American Physicians Society

Open to all medical students.

Dr. Thomas P. and Edwin H. Delvin Medical Scholarship

Open to medical students who are a resident of Melrose, North Reading, Stoneham, Wakefield, Wilmington, Winchester or Woburn, Massachusetts.

Dr. U.R. Plante Medical Scholarship

Open to medical students who are a resident of Adirondack Park, St. Lawrence, Essex, Franklin, Hamilton or Clinton County, NY, or have lived at least 2 years in these locations.

Dupage County Medical Society

Offers scholarship support to medical students who are permanent residents of Dupage County, IL.

Frank and Louise Groff Foundation

Open to medical students who are a graduate from a public high school within Monmouth County, New Jersey.

Herbert W. Nickens Medical Student Scholarships

Open to applicants who are entering their 3rd year of medical school.

Japanese Medical Society Scholarship

Offers funding to medical students who propose a clear, achievable project that will benefit the Japanese community.

Joanna F. Reed Medical Scholarship

Provides scholarship support to MD students. Applicants must reside in Alabama or Northwest Florida and be attending a private medical school.

Joseph Collins Foundation Scholarship

Applicants must be in their 1st or 2nd year in medical school and demonstrate an interest in the arts or other cultural pursuits outside of medicine and have an interest in specializing in neurology, psychiatry or becoming a general practitioner.

Kaiser Permanente Oliver Goldsmith M.D. Scholarship

Open to applicants entering their 3rd or 4th year of medical school and intend to practice medicine in Southern California.

Kaiser Permanente Scholarship

Applicants must be a 3rd year medical student expected to graduate the following year and interested in seeking residency in Northern California.

Massachusetts Medical Society

Offers a variety of scholarships for students pursuing an MD.

Merck/AFAR Scholarship

Open to 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year medical students who have an interest in geriatric medicine.

MyHeart Scholarship

Open to applicants interested in the study of cardiovascular or the pursuit of a career in the healthcare industry.

National Medical Fellowships

Offers scholarships to applicants who are 1st and 2nd year MD students and who meet the criteria for underrepresented in healthcare and/or socioeconomic disadvantaged student.

National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution

Offers various scholarships to students who are pursuing a medical degree.

NBME Educational Assistance Award

The National Board of Medical Examiners provides a scholarship to currently enrolled medical students who have registered to take the USMLE Step 1 and 2 CK exam to offset the cost of exam registration fees.

Noah Jon Markstrom Foundation Scholarship

Open to graduate students interested in pediatric medicine.

Panacea Financial Foundation Scholarship

Open to underrepresented currently enrolled full-time medical students.

The Pisacano Leadership Foundation

Open to rising 4th year medical students. Provides funding for 4 years, beginning the final year of medical school and through 3 years of residency training in family medicine.

Thomas Brown McClellan Trust Scholarship

Open to MD students who have attended a public or private high school in Miami-Dade County, Florida.

Samvid Scholars

Provides up to $50,000 in tuition support for 2 years to incoming medical students.

Wellsford and Mildred Clark Medical Memorial Scholarship

Applicants must be a 3rd year medical student and a resident of Connecticut for five years.

Students with Disabilities

American Association on Health and Disability (AAHD) Scholarship Program

This program supports students with disabilities who are pursuing higher education. Scholarships will be limited to under $1,000.

Blind or Visually Impaired Students

American Council of the Blind

In conjunction with the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB), offers scholarships ranging from $2,000 to $7,500 to legally blind students pursuing a higher education degree. Students must be enrolled full-time.

American Foundation for the Blind: AFB Scholarships

Offers scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students who are legally blind.

Council of Citizens with Low Vision International (C.C.L.V.I.): Fred Scheigert Scholarship Awards $3,000 scholarships to three students with low vision and high academic achievement.

National Federation of the Blind

Offers scholarships to legally blind US citizens pursuing a full-time higher education degree.

DACA Students

Earnest Scholarship

Applicants much be enrolled full-time at an accredited U.S. college or university. Available to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and DACA.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund

Scholarships available to undergraduate and graduate students of Hispanic heritage. Available to US citizens, permanent residents, and DACA.

LULAC National Scholarship Fund

Scholarship awarded to US citizens, permanent residents, or DACA recipients to help defray the cost of tuition based on academic achievement. Awards range from $250 to $2,000. Graduate students must have applied or be enrolled in a part-time program.

Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans Fellowship that supports up to two years of graduate study for immigrants and children of immigrants. Eligibility extends to DACA recipients.

Ethnic Heritage

Agnes Jones Jackson Scholarship

Applicant must be current member of the NAACP and must not have reached the age of 25 by the application deadline. Applicant must be a citizen of the United States and be enrolled in an accredited college or university in the United States.

The American Institute of Polish Culture Inc.

Offers scholarships to U.S. citizens, preferably of Polish descent, who are pursing higher education (either undergraduate or graduate studies).

Anne Murray Bell Healthcare Professions

Provides scholarships to African American male or female students enrolled in a New England area accredited medical school.

Armenian General Benevolent Union US Scholarship (Graduate)

Provides funds to graduate students of Armenian descent who clearly demonstrate academic excellence and financial need.

CBC Spouses Education Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to African American students pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees in a variety of fields.

Congressional Black Caucus Foundation

The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF) awards scholarships to academically talented and motived African American students pursuing a graduate or doctoral degree.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority: Mary Murphy Scholarship

Scholarship awarded to women pursuing graduate studies, particularly in fields where African American women are underrepresented.

Financial Assistance Scholarship

This scholarship is available to all graduating high school students and current college students of all levels (undergraduate, graduate, and PhD) of Iranian descent regardless of citizenship or country of residency.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund

Scholarships available to undergraduate and graduate students of Hispanic heritage. Available to US citizens, permanent residents, and DACA recipients.

Iranian-American Scholarship Fund

Provides scholarship support to students with Iranian heritage and US citizenship OR legal permanent residency with a valid permanent resident card; minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA.

JVS Scholarship

This scholarship is available to full-time graduate students who identify as Jewish. Students must be a permanent or legal resident of Los Angeles County for a minimum of 3 years.

The Korean American Scholarship Foundation

Offers scholarships to students of Korean heritage, who are attending undergraduate or graduate programs in specific regions of the United States. For Harvard University, students must apply with the Northeastern Regional Chapter.

Kosciusko Foundation, Inc.: Tuition Scholarship for Graduate Studies

Scholarships offered to Americans of Polish descent who are pursuing graduate degrees.

Pauahi Foundation Scholarship

Scholarship opportunity for graduate students. Open to the public, however preference is given to applicants of Hawaiian ancestry.

Native Hawaiian Health Scholarship

Open to native Hawaiians who are seeking discipline in primary care and are committed to working in underserved areas.

New England Hellenic Medical and Dental Society

Open to MD students who are a member of NEHMDS of Hellenic descent.

Swiss Benevolent Society of New York (SBS) Graduate Award

Proof of Swiss Parentage required: The applicant or one of their parents must be a Swiss national. Applicants must be permanently domiciled in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania or Delaware for two years or more. U.S. Resident. Must be in excellent academic standing (min. GPA 3.8) and show aptitude in your chosen fields of study.

Thurgood Marshall College Fund

Provides funding to outstanding male and female African American students. In addition to excelling in the classroom, these individuals are leaders in the community who exemplify the values of volunteerism and service. The Gold Standard Scholarship Program provides academic scholarships of $10,000 to local students in six NBA markets (New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit, New Orleans and Boston).

LGBTQIA+ Students

Harvard Gender and Sexuality Caucus: Open Gate Grants

Grants that support a wide variety of requests to encourage scholarship, understanding, or celebration, in the fields of sexual orientation and gender identity and expression.

BIPOC Scholarship for LGBTQIA+ Students

Scholarships awarded to BIPOC students who identify as LGBTQIA+ and are pursuing a four-year undergraduate degree or master’s degree.

Point Scholarship

Scholarships provided to full-time undergraduate and graduate students who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership skills, financial need, and are members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Women in Medicine LGBTQ Leadership Scholarship

Provides scholarship support to female and gender expansive medical students enrolled in their first, second or third year of medical school.

Native Americans

The Native Forward Scholars Fund

Offers scholarships to American Indian and Alaska Native students pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees.

The Navajo Nation Graduate Fellowship

Provides financial assistance in the form of grant awards to eligible Navajo students wishing to attend or attending graduate school.

Association on American Indian Affairs Scholarships

Scholarships available to Native American U.S. citizens enrolled in a full-time degree program.

Catching the Dream

Scholarships provided the Native American students who demonstrate academic achievement, defined goals, leadership potential, and the desire to help others in their community.

Daughters of the American Revolution: American Indians Scholarships

Scholarships awarded to Native American students pursuing undergraduate or graduate studies.

Indian Health Service (IHS)

Open to qualified American Indian and Alaska Native health professions students.

Oneida Higher Education (OHE) Scholarships offered to enrolled members of the Oneida Tribe of Indians of Wisconsin who are pursuing a vocational, undergraduate, or graduate degree.

The Osage Nation Higher Education Scholarship Scholarships awarded to Osage students pursuing higher education at any level (associates, bachelors, masters, and doctoral programs).

Military/Family

David Resnick & Associates Annual Veteran’s Grant

To recognize the sacrifices veterans have made for our country, the law firm of David Resnick & Associates is awarding cash grants to men and women who have served in the U.S. armed forces.

Tillman Scholars Application

Scholarship program for veteran and active duty military members from all U.S. branches as well as current spouses of veteran or active service members including surviving spouses.

Religious Affiliation

Jewish Community Foundation College Scholarships

The Jewish Community Foundation encompasses different affiliates based in certain locations that offer scholarships to students who reside in the affiliated regions.

Fadel Educational Foundation

Offers scholarships to Muslim US citizens and permanent residents who demonstrate financial need and are pursuing a higher education degree.

Ida Foreman Fleisher Fund

Open to women, preferably Jewish, to pursue a graduate degree. Applicants must have a hometown or attend a school in the Greater Philadelphia area including New Jersey and Delaware.

Hirsch Herman Fund

Open to graduate students, preferably of the Jewish faith, to study medicine. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and have a connection to the greater Philadelphia area.

The Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

Offers scholarships to female members of the Lutheran church who are pursuing a career other than ministry.

Women

AAUW International Fellowships

Open to scholars who identify as women. Must have citizenship in a country other than the U.S. or possession of a nonimmigrant visa if residing in the U.S. Women who are currently, or expect to be during the fellowship year, a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, or dual citizen with the U.S. and another country are not eligible. Fellows must return to their home country to pursue a professional career upon completion of their studies.

American Association of University Women (AAUW): Community Action Grants and Career Development

Awards scholarships and grants to women pursing higher education.

American Medical Women’s Association

Offers a variety of scholarships to currently enrolled female medical students

Armenian International Women’s Association

Scholarships offered to women of Armenian descent pursuing undergraduate or graduate studies. Scholarships are awarded based on financial need and academic excellence.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority: Mary Murphy Scholarship

Scholarship awarded to women pursuing graduate studies, particularly in fields where African American women are underrepresented.

General Federation

A selection of scholarships offered to women from Massachusetts who are pursuing undergraduate and graduate study.

National Pathfinder Scholarship

The three annual scholarships of $2,500 provide financial assistance and support to women seeking undergraduate or graduate degrees.

P.E.O. Program for Continuing Education

Grant program providing financial assistance to women whose education has been interrupted and who find it necessary to return to school support themselves and/or their families. They must demonstrate a need for financial assistance with their educational expenses to improve their marketable skills.

The Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund

Offers educational grants to women from developing countries whose graduate studies and future plans aim to benefit women and children in their respective regions.

American Statistical Association (ASA)

Women in or entering the early stages of graduate training (MS or PhD) are encouraged to apply.

Federal Scholarship Programs

Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Program

This program is offered through the Air Force, Army and Navy. The program offers support to MD students for their tuition and required fees, and provides a monthly stipend for living expenses. The minimum service obligation incurred by participants is 2 to 3 years depending upon specialty; a year of obligation is required for each year the student receives support. Participants must apply for residency programs of the military.

National Health Service Corps

Open to medical students who are planning to pursue a career in primary care and are committed to working in underserved areas. Scholarship recipients receive 12 monthly stipends, a single payment for books, supplies and equipment for the year and payment to tuition and required fees for the year. Funding support may be renewed throughout medical school up to 4 years. For each year of support, participants owe one year of future service providing primary care services to Health Professional Shortage Area as assigned by NHSC. The minimum obligation is 2 years.

The US Department of Veterans Affairs Health Professions Scholarship Program

This program provides financial assistance to individuals pursuing a program of study leading to an MD. Please note, Pediatrics is not eligible for this program. This program offers support to MD students for their tuition and required fees, and provides a monthly stipend for living expenses. The minimum service obligation incurred by participants is 18 months for every year sponsored at a VA facility after graduation, licensure, and residency.
