SUSTAINABLE NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS BEGIN WITH THE RIGHT MINDSET
The New Year is here and with it comes the timeless tradition of setting resolutions. For many it’s an opportunity to make a fresh start, whether by committing to healthier habits, advancing careers, or spending more time with loved ones. Yet year after year countless resolutions fade away before February arrives. What makes the difference between a resolution that sticks and one that fizzles? The answer lies not in the goal itself but in your mindset.
THE INNER CHANGE BEFORE THE OUTER CHANGE
Real, lasting change begins with a shift in perspective. It’s not enough to decide whether you’ll go to the gym five days a week or finally cut out junk food. To sustain those actions, you need to start with your internal “why”- the beliefs, values and motivations that drive your choices. When your mindset aligns with your goal, your actions naturally follow.
WHY RESOLUTIONS FAIL
Resolutions often fail because they focus exclusively on external outcomes. For example, someone might say, “I want to lose 20 pounds, without addressing the underlying habits, self-perceptions or emotional triggers tied to their current behavior. Without that deeper work, even the best intentions can feel like a battle of willpower- and willpower alone isn’t enough.
STEPS TO MAKE YOUR RESOLUTION STICK
REFLECT ON YOUR MOTIVATIONS
Take time to ask yourself why this goal matters to you. Is it about improving your health so you can have more energy for your kids? Gaining confidence to pursue new opportunities? Clarifying your motivations will help you connect emotionally to the goal.
SHIFT OUTCOMES TO IDENTITY
Instead of focusing solely on what you want to achieve, think about who you want to become. For example, instead of “I want to read 20 books this year,” shift to “I want to be a person who values lifelong learning.” This subtle change creates a foundation for habits that align with your identity.
PRACTICE INTENTIONAL MIND CONTROL
Your thoughts shape your reality. To support your goals, it’s crucial to control the inner dialogue in your mind. Notice and stop the mindless chatter that undermines your progress, such as self-doubt or negative assumptions. Replace these thoughts with affirmations that align with your goals, such as, “I am capable of change” or “Every small step is progress.” Daily mindfulness practices, like meditation or journaling, can help you tune into your thoughts and guide them purposefully.
SILENCE MINDLESS CHATTER
Mindless chatter often sneaks in during moments of doubt or distraction, creating mental noise that pulls you away from your intentions. Practice awareness by catching these thoughts as they arise. Use tools like deep breathing, focusing exercises, or positive visualization to quiet your mind. For example, when a negative thought like “I’ll never achieve this” appears, pause and consciously redirect your focus
to a more constructive statement, such as “I am making progress every day.” Over time, this practice strengthens your mental resilience.
START SMALL AND BUILD MOMENTUM
Big changes are overwhelming. Start with one small, achievable step. If your goal is to exercise regularly, begin with a 10 minute walk each day. Success in small actions builds confidence and creates a ripple effect.
ANTICIPATE CHALLENGES
Reflect on potential obstacles and plan how you’ll handle them. Life is unpredictable, so having strategies in place-like a backup plan for busy days keeps you from losing momentum.
PRACTICE SELF-COMPASSION
Remember that change is a process, not a switch you flip overnight. There will be setbacks, but how you respond to them matters. Treat yourself with kindness and keep moving forward.
MINDSET: THE SECRET INGREDIENT
As you prepare for the New Year, remember that the most powerful changes happen from the inside out. Before you write down your resolution, spend time working on the mindset that will support it. Believe in your capacity for change and focus on aligning your goals with your values and identity. When your inner world transforms, your outer world will follow. Let this be the year you not only set resolutions but also embrace the mindset that makes them possible.

The Gap and The Gain: The High Achievers' Guide to Happiness, Confidence, and Success
By Dan Sullivan & Dr. Benjamin Hardy
Most people, especially highly ambitious people, are unhappy because of how they measure their progress. We all have an "ideal," a moving target that is always out of reach. When we measure ourselves against that ideal, we're in "the GAP." However, when we measure ourselves against our previous selves, we're in "the GAIN."
In this book you will learn that measuring your current self vs. your former self has enormous psychological benefits. And that's really the key to this deceptively simple yet multi-layered concept that will have you feeling good, feeling grateful, and feeling like you are making progress even when times are tough, which will in turn bolster motivation, confidence, and future success.

LGA NEWS
PLAYER OF THE YEAR
The LGA Player of the Year award is the culmination of our entire season on golf. Criteria for the award include handicap improvement, rounds of golf played, individual goals, and participation and placing in LGA events. Points are assigned to the different criteria. That data is then tracked for all members.
This year’s Player of the Year is Vanessa Mullen. She was presented with her trophy at our holiday party in December. Congratulations Vanessa!
RINGER BOOK WINNERS
Each year members have the opportunity to participate in our Ringer Book competition. At the start of the season, participants record their round score by each individual hole of the BMAC course. Every time they improve their score on a hole, they update that hole in the book. Here are the winners that shot the best score for 18 and 9 holes over the course of the year.
18-Hole Winners:
Gross – Karyn Haydock – 61
Net – Diane Voss – 41
9-Hole Winners:
Gross – Vanessa Mullen – 32
Net – Phebe Cohen – 19
THANK YOU FOR YOUR YEARS OF SERVICE!
During this past year of tremendous growth, the LGA has been fortunate to have five talented Board Members who offered its members a plethora of opportunities to play golf and build friendships. We have three outgoing Board Members: Karyn Haydock, Missie Kisker, and Jill Lain. They have each served for two years and are due a wealth of gratitude.
Returning Board Members Amy Davidson and Sally Peterson will be joined by Vanessa Mullen, Gail Smith, and Diane Voss for 2025. It shaping up to be another great year.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE LGA
Plan to join us for our 2025 LGA Kickoff Meeting. We will be gathering at B & B on Wednesday, January 22nd, at 6:00 pm. The agenda will include our tentative tournament schedule for the year along with additional events the Board has planned. We will also be accepting member dues for the year.
