TheHmongNewYear,knownas“NojPebCaug”(naw-bae-chao),isacherishedtradition celebratedbyHmongcommunitiesworldwide.InColorado,thiscelebrationhasbecomea cornerstoneofculturalpreservationandcommunityconnectionforover41years.TheColorado HmongNewYearbringstogetherfamilies,friends,andneighborstohonorHmongheritage,share culturaltraditions,andwelcomeanewyearwithhopeandgratitude.
WhyHmongPeopleCelebratetheNewYear
Traditionally,theHmongNewYearmarksatimeofrestandrejuvenationforbothfamiliesandtheir spiritualprotectorsafteralongyearofhardworkandsafeguarding.Thisperiodofrestallows individualstoreflectontheiraccomplishments,reconnectwithlovedones,andprepareforthe yearahead.Hmongfamiliesgathertocelebratewithjoy,gratitude,andhope,expressingthanks fortheblessingsandresilienceofthepastyear.

TheHmongpeople,originallyfromthemountainousregionsof SoutheastAsia,playedacrucialrolealongsidetheCentralIntelligence AgencyduringtheVietnamWar.Afterthewar,manyHmongrefugees resettledaroundtheworld,includinghereintheUnitedStates.Annual HmongNewYearcelebrationsarevitalforpreservingourrichcultural heritageandtraditions.Thisvibranteventisacherishedcultural traditionthathasbeentheheartoftheColoradoHmongcommunity for41years.ItoffersauniqueopportunitytohonorHmongheritage throughtraditionalperformances,deliciousfoods,educational workshops,andengagingactivitiesforallages.It’salsoatimeto
strengthencommunitybondsandfostercross-culturalunderstandingamongthediverse communitiesthatcallColoradohome.

TheHmongAmericanAssociationofColorado(HMAAC)wasfoundedin1992 withthepurposeofservingandupliftingtheHmongcommunityacrossthe state.Sinceitsinception,HMAAChasbeendedicatedtopromotingcultural preservation,fosteringsocialandeconomicopportunities,andcreating pathwaysforeducationandintegrationwithinthebroaderColorado community.
