THE IMPACT OF IMAGES IN OUR FESTIVE MEMORY

We will look at the steps, the various inspirations and the materiel

LOVE LIEBMANN HKB VISKOM 2023-2024

More than five months of: stress, discovery, stress, fun, boredom and so on 14.05.2024

Hi, i am love and here i’ll present my final work of my bachelor studies in the art school of Bern. It was really nice years here and I am glad you can understand my work a bit better with this documentation

I entered in HKb in 2021, in visual communication. I met new people and learn a lot of new stuff. I discovered photography as well, I do it now on a regular basis, in parties, events, concerts and so on. My bachelor work was, I think influenced by this practice.

I WANTED TO WORK WITH SOUND AND IMAGES

HOW IT STARTED

I only had a global idea of what I was going to do, to create. I wanted to work with images and sound. So I started collecting as much of examples that I could I find. In books, on internet, etc...

At first I got intersted in how images react to sound, or how light reacts to sound, how the body reacts to sound.

Where is there often sound and lights and images? In parties. Free party ? Clubs? In what direction should I go?

ALL OF THIS

At the beginning of the research I thought it was super important to get inspired by a lot of diffferent people to see what they do, how they do or to even guess how they do their multimedia art. In the world of partying multimedia art is quite important, at least for me. Like Vjing for exemple or even the performances you can find on different styles of music.

I HAD A LOT OF INTERESTS

COULD NOT DO IT ALL

WHAT IS THAT ?

Notes and notes and notes and notes. Everything that came up to my mind was written on a lot of different pieces of paper.

The first Ideas of how the performance could look like, what I was willing to talk about. It was a lot of key words, thoughts, discussions.

A lot of those little letters to myself were written when I was blocked in a thought and had to write it down to continue my research.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE SUBJECT

I wanted to know everything around sound, music, art and also performances but I couldn’t tell or know everything for the 13th of may 2024. With some discussions with my mentor we put the finger on someting important. I am actually a photographer, an event photographer mostly. The party ? The pictures ? why do we do pictures ? Why is the phone important?

WHAT’S NEXT ?

I decided to focus on why do we do pictures in a festive environnment. How are they usefull or not and how the fact that we have the smartphone in our hands makes us do a lot more of them. How do we use after the party.

I was a photographer in a big festival called «Dour in Belgium.

I had a lot of materiel, I could easily find some more. I knew a lot of people that were there and I feel confortable with the place and subject. So let’s focus on people during last year’s festival, in 2023.

Here we can find the folder of my pictures of 2023.

OThere is a lot of photography material because the festival chooses paid photographers and photographs that volunteer, so they can have a lot of publicity to put in social media, as instagram or facebook.

WHERE DID I LOOK FOR MATERIAL ?

First I looked into my pictures, on my phone’s gallery and in my personal archive. Asked my friends to send me as many pictures and videos they could. Looked up the instagram of Dour festival and on their Flickr, where I could find all the pictures of others official photographers !

GOT INSPIRED BY MY ALGORYTHM

For some months the theme of my thesis was always somewhere in my head, so obviously even when I was scrolling on my phone it was appearing to me.

At this moment I was concentrating on my theoretical work, how to do a performance about the theme I choosed.

It has to make sense visually and what I was saying had to work with what I wanted to show.

I am impressed by the amount of diverity we can find online and here, on Instagram

INTERNET AND BOOKS FINDS THAT INSPIRED ME I have seen a lot of images and examples but all of them were super inspiring and different themes were talked about. It helped me to know what I was going to do for the theory and fir the practice.

BOOKS THAT HELPED ME

THE MOST FOR THE THEORETICAL WORK

I actually enjoyed reading this book, the 9 artists have the same kind of topic but they used it in different exemples and distinct way of approaching it artistlically. That’s what helped me to find my own way of approaching the theme I had selected.

Martin Lister, The photographic image in digital culture It’s more a scientific vision also comparing the development through time of how we use our devices, beginning with analog cameras to smartphones.

Key words are really helpful, I feel like you can always leave your imagination work on you key words.

And some abstract drawing at first to go with those. And write what you have in mind always, you’ll maybe forget it later and that would be a bit sad, doesn’t it ?

or below-signification. Interpretation takes the sensory experience of the work of art for granted, and proceeds from there. This cannot be taken for granted, now. are an integral part of social relationships, activities and networks that are influenced by affects and emotions. ° A relationship which has intensified in the context of the social networks. The imperative Affect Me in the title of our show is to be understood as reciprocal: a call for affecting people and images, interrelated in a dynamic connection.

° A new form of pictorial iconicity developed. Here, for the first time countless amateur photos of the event were taken (usually by New York tourists equipped with standard cameras, to then appear on online-news pages and be labelled with notes like «amateur newsies,»

however, the return of images and their appropriation by artists —as I hope to show in selected examples from

° Such artistic remediations and reenactments of photographic icons have become extremely popular in our daily culture shaped by social media, and artists are quickly falling under the suspicion of wanting to appropriate their affective dynamic for their own work. The impact of artistic appropriations, however, remains at lower level and subordinate in comparison to the long-established media and culture industries, such as TV and the Internet. This applies particularly to those iconic images —that according to Gerhard Paul-intervene formatively in the historical process itself and significantly shape the memory of the event they reproduce.»

Baladi not least questions the channels through which images are disseminated, including the status of the images themselves and their promise of authenticity, by way of blending fiction and documentation. The comparison of YouTube and «Wonderland» with all its paradoxes and absurdities, where one may dreamingly lose grip of reality, is ambiguous and telling.

Why do so many photos that appear on the Facebook newsfeed or Instagram look alike? The iconic mirror selfie, the plate of delicious food, a sunset, the finger pointing to a small, disgusting flaw in the hotel’s bathroom. Images encourage the production of ever more images —and they all seem to refer back to a canonized pool of genres and gestures. The artistic and scientific approach of Irene Chabr is based on her interest in precisely these image practices in social networks. She has put together an extensive archive of users’ photos that she describes as an «atlas of gestures.» Chabr works on her project, Wandernde Gesten. Eine kinstlerisch-kultur-analytische Untersuchung von Bildmigrationen (Wandering Gestures. An artistic and cultural-analytical inquiry of image migrations), at the Zurich University of the Arts. She analyses the way in which users pick up on visual repertoires and indicating gestures in/their reenactments or Internet memes. She thereby questions the allegedly authentic nature of the images as well as their promise of contributing to the emergence of new global communities. From her archive, she continually produces new combinations as «work in progress,» which she presents in installations of image boards. A new version of her series, Wandernde Gesten (2015-2017), which collects selfies In social media, it is no longer only about seeing but also about being seen-intentionally or not.

In the installation, iPhone Crack (August Moon) (2014), this observation of the viewer» is actively integrated into the piece. As soon as the spectator draws near, the projection surface changes from a milky, clouded pane to shattered iPhone.

TALKS

I decided to do interviews. Because who knows better why we do pictures with are smartphones during parties than people that actually do it. I went to my friends or friends of friends to ask them a few questions.

It’s surprising how festival make decorations and self-publicity so when people who are there take pictures, we know where they are. I guess all of that gets into our memory so that’s probably why people have similarities when they talk about the same event

QUESTIONS

I wanted to know, what they remember from last year’s festival, how do they remember their moments, what is an important moment for them and how they use their photos and smartphone to remember all that. It became also a work on the memory actually, on the use of smartphones to remember. I showed them some pictures done from me or not to see if they good dig a memory through it.

FRIENDS AND FRIENDS OF FRIENDS

IMAGES SHOWED DURING THE INTERVIEW

AFTER THE INTERVIEWS

I did analyze their responses, see what memories they had in common or not. The way they remember things. What is important for them in a picture and what isn’t. If a picture that was seen by most of them will be a common memory.

entrance of the festival, the horrible way to get to the campsite.

see, there is already an other one.

the hole festival is in a wind farm

random guy at the camping. You find people like this all over. don’t worry they’re sleeping.

I was surprised by a lot of answers, how one picture good make people remember the same thing. It was also super interesting to see their approach to photography as a consumer of images in everyday life. How the presence of smartphone photography has emplified in the last years is absolutely crazy.

so many music styles, people look sweet when they dance. It’s just a bit expensive to eat and drink water, to find water as well, hope it will be better this year.

isn’t sweet. it’s a bit sandy, because people dance hard. i took the picture. hihi

Those toilets have a funny story, for each person. the one I’ve heard the most is that someone draw a smiley with it’s poop. disgusting

a lo of people. 280’000 per year approximatel. big artists, forget about seeing them or go in front 1hour before the gig starts.

2023 was a good year for the weather. never went above27 degrees. sometimes even a bit cold.

PERFORMANCE

HOW DID IT GO

I did my performance with two monitors that were playing with samples of the interviwes I’ve made and pictures I’ve collected. I wanted it to be almost like a discussion between the people, the knowledge I had accumulated and the pictures. One after an other we were talking speaking from ourselves. It was a performative lecture, with a script I had wrote.

OWHERE WAS IT?

It was in the blackbox. It’s actually a photostudio in the school but the walls are completely white so it is super helpful. The place is pretty big so the performance could welcome everyone.

WHAT KIND OF INSPIRATION

I looked for various inspirations. Effects on images, how they could move, how they could be distroyed or changed. What has been already done and how could I make something on my own.

For the installation I wanted something that reacts to sound. To what people say.

When we go to some events we like to talk about it afterwards. Our memories change each time we talk about them, how could I show that in an installation.

WHERE WILL I PLACE IT IN THE SPACE?

The department constructed a little representation of the exhibition so we could choose the better place to exhibit.

Two departments exhibit in the school, Viskom and Vkd. Fine arts exhibit in a museum in Langenthal.

TESTS FOR THE PRACTICAL WORK AND BUILDING EXHIBITION

BUILDING IT

Big screen and four hanging microphones. I am using a zoom as an audio interface. Touchdesigner (for the hole process).

SOME MORE TO COME...

I would like to continue this work. In different variations, visuals, maybe a bit more of coding. Here I used a software that doesn’t really need coding but to do even craziest things it would be great to learn it!

Thanks for reading, watching, liking or disliking. I had good time here, hope others will as well. see you next time
