特首獻辭

二零二五年度香港藝術節隆重揭幕,這項名聞 中外的國際文化盛事昂然踏入第五十三屆,可 喜可賀。

今年藝術節匯聚逾 1,300 名本地及海外藝術家, 帶來約 125 場文藝節目,包括音樂、舞蹈、戲 劇、戲曲、歌劇等,多彩多姿。其中,意大 利的博洛尼亞市立歌劇院樂團在大師級指揮家 杜拿多.倫澤第領導下,演奏經典的意大利歌 劇詠嘆調,為藝術節揭開序幕。藝術節閉幕當 日,著名中國指揮家呂嘉將率領中國國家大劇 院管弦樂團,與國際鋼琴家張昊辰和女高音宋 元明攜手演出,獻上音樂盛宴,為今屆藝術節 畫上圓滿句號。

一如往年,今屆藝術節推出多個「加料節目」, 包括大師班、工作坊、後台參觀、文化導賞團 等,讓藝術家與觀眾互動交流。藝術節「青少年 之友」計劃則籌備了學校巡演、演前講座、藝術 示範及其他特備節目,讓本地年輕人有更豐富 的文化與藝術體驗。

政府銳意加強香港文化影響力。為進一步鞏固 香港作為中外文化藝術交流中心的地位,政府 於去年 11 月公佈《文藝創意產業發展藍圖》,提 出四個發展方向共 71 項具體措施,並正積極推 展相關工作。

感謝香港藝術節及其團隊盡心竭力推動香港、 整個地區以至全球的文化藝術發展;亦感謝贊 助商和捐款者慷慨解囊和鼎力支持,令藝術節 綻放異彩。

祝願今屆香港藝術節續創輝煌,再度呈獻文藝 盛宴,讓市民樂在其中,回味無窮。

This year’s Festival brings together over 1,300 international and local artists in some 125 performances covering music, dance, theatre, Chinese and Western opera and much more. The Festival-opening performance, by Italy’s Orchestra of the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, conducted by Maestro Donato Renzetti, features classic Italian opera arias. Renowned Chinese conductor Lü Jia and the China National Centre for the Performing Arts Orchestra, together with international pianist Zhang Haochen and soprano Song Yuanming, bring the Festival to a close in grand style. Festival PLUS returns, presenting a wealth of artistaudience events, including masterclasses and workshops, backstage visits, guided cultural tours and more. Besides, the Festival’s “Young Friends” programme features school tours, pre-performance talks, arts demonstrations and other special events designed to engage local young people with a world of arts and culture.

The Government is determined to enhance the appeal of Hong Kong’s culture. To further solidify Hong Kong’s position as a vibrant East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchanges, the Government has launched the Blueprint for Arts and Culture and Creative Industries Development in November 2024, and has been actively working on the 71 measures under four key strategic directions as outlined in the Blueprint.

I am grateful to the Hong Kong Arts Festival and its dedicated team for their unremitting efforts in promoting arts and culture in Hong Kong, throughout the region and around the world. I am grateful, too, to the many sponsors and donors for their generous support for the Festival.

歡迎閣下蒞臨第 53 屆香港藝術節。作為一個具 領導地位的國際表演藝術盛事,藝術節將在今 年繼續肩負重任,拓寬香港文化景觀,透過邀 請超過 1,300 位國際及本地的優秀藝術家,為 觀眾帶來超過 45 套節目、合共逾 125 場精采演 出,並同時舉辦約 300 項加料節目及教育活動, 促進香港的藝術文化發展。

A warm welcome to the 53rd Hong Kong Arts Festival. As a leading international performing arts event, the Festival is continuing its mission of enhancing Hong Kong’s cultural landscape by showcasing over 1,300 exceptional international and local artists in more than 125 performances of over 45 unique programmes, as well as organising about 300 PLUS and educational activities for the community.

I would like to thank the HKSAR Government, acting through the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, for its annual subvention and matching grant which are not only essential to our operations, but also an important recognition of the work we do. I also want to thank The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust for its unwavering support during the past 53 years, as well as other corporate sponsors, charitable foundations and donors, whose contributions have enabled us to reach out to different sectors of the community and positively impact society through the performing arts.

前言 FOREWORD

香港藝術節的其中一個主要目標,就是推動國 際文化交流。本屆香港藝術節秉承一貫既尊重

傳統又開創新猷的精神,邀請了一眾來自世界 各地殿堂級的大師,以及國際上備受矚目的年 輕藝術拓荒者,為我們獻上優秀的名作。當中 不少取材自經典文學,甚至是原汁原味地呈現 原著的創作,為觀眾帶來豐富的藝術享受。

與此同時,我們還獻上一系列以「幻想與冒險」 為主題的節目,部分以虛擬實境及擴增實境等 技術,把藝術與科技完美融合,部分則借鑑傳 統的戲偶與馬戲演出,創造出引人入勝的新作 品。本屆藝術節亦繼續積極支持本地藝術家, 鼓勵交流,共同建構一個充滿活力的多元化藝 術平台。

演出精采可期之外,我們更不忘在藝術教育和 觀眾拓展方面努力耕耘,一方面送上一連串精 心準備的「加料節目」,包括展覽、大師班、後 台參觀、演後藝人談等,另一方面亦策劃了豐 富多元的青少年之友及教育活動,冀望從不同 的層面、角度,為大家塑造更立體而深刻的藝 術體驗。

Promoting international cultural exchange has always been a key objective of the Hong Kong Arts Festival. This year’s Festival continues to invite renowned global masters and internationally recognised young pioneers to present a range of world-class programmes, respecting tradition while encouraging new, innovative initiatives. Many of these works are inspired by classic literature or offer rediscoveries of the original, bringing vibrant artistic experiences to the city.

We will also present a series of programmes centred around “fantasy and adventure”. These include works that seamlessly blend the arts with VR and AR technology, as well as captivating new creations that draw on traditional puppetry and circus performances. The Festival will also continue to support local artists and encourage exchanges to foster a vibrant and diversified platform for the arts.

We also remain dedicated to advancing arts education and audience building. Our PLUS programmes will present a series of thoughtfully curated masterclasses, backstage visits, post-performance artist talks and an exhibition. And our Young Friends and educational activities will continue to offer multi-dimensional arts experiences to students.

香港藝術節 於 1973 年正式揭幕,是國際藝壇中重要 的文化盛事,於每年 2、3 月期間呈獻眾多優秀本地及 國際藝術家的演出,以及舉辦多元化的「加料」和教 育活動,致力豐富香港的文化生活。

香港藝術節 是一所非牟利機構,2024/25 財政年度 預計收入(包括第 53 屆香港藝術節及 2025 年「無限 亮」)約港幣一億五千萬,當中香港特區政府的年度 恆常撥款佔總收入約 12%,另外約 23% 需來自票房 收入,約 45% 則需依賴來自各大企業、熱心人士和 慈善基金會的贊助和捐款。預計餘下的約 20% 則來 自其他收入,包括政府針對捐款和贊助收入而提供的 配對資助。

The HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year.

The HKAF is a non-profit organisation. The total estimated income for FY2024/25 (including the 53rd Hong Kong Arts Festival and 2025 “No Limits”) is approximately HK$150 million. Current Government annual baseline funding accounts for around 12% of the Festival's total income. Around 23% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and around 45% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals and charitable foundations. The remaining 20% is expected to come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching grant scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations.

The HKAF has presented top international artists and ensembles across multiple genres, such as*:

• Chinese opera: China National Peking Opera Company, Hebei Clapper Opera Troupe, Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe, Shanghai Zhang Jun Kunqu Art Center, Suzhou Kunqu Opera Company of Jiangsu, Zhejiang Xiaobaihua Yue Opera Troupe

The HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, the HKAF has commissioned and produced over 250 local productions across genres including Cantonese opera, theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include Miss Julie, Table for Six On Stage, Loveless Romance, We Are Gay, The Plague, Always by Your Side, Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family—A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Danz Up, Datong—The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs and Murder in San Jose, to name a few.

The HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by the HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III

為創造更穩健的財政環境以及確保藝術節的長期可 持續性, 香港藝術節基金會 於 2022 年成立,旨在讓 藝術節在未來進行年度預算以外的大型或特別項目。

and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with the HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake co-commissioned with the Shanghai International Arts Festival, Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with the San Francisco Opera, and Laila, a co-production of the HKAF and the Finnish National Opera and Ballet.

The HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 32 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached around 836,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year.

The HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

The HKAF actively promotes inclusion via the arts to every corner of the community. The “No Limits” project, co-presented with The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, was launched in 2019. Through a series of performances and diverse arts experiences for students and the community, “No Limits” strives to create an inclusive space for people with different abilities to share the joy of the arts together.

To provide greater financial security and long-term sustainability for the Festival, the Hong Kong Arts Festival Foundation was officially launched in 2022. Donations to the Foundation will be used towards enabling the Festival to present in the future largescale or special projects which its annual budget cannot cater for.

我們一直渴求以藝術手法,讓人即使身處在

某一個空間,仍能同時感受來自兩個世界的

感官刺激。《真.幻境界》正正體現了這理 念:把兩個共存的世界變成遊樂場。

當我們觸及生與死這般敏感的議題時,總會

暫時放下科技裝置,一起深刻反思生活。現 場演出為這些反思增添了緊張、刺激感,而 虛擬影像卻能使我們身處的這個詩意空間更 真實。

這大膽的嘗試花了五年時間才得以實現,成 功讓一百名觀眾同時觀賞這演出,並相信眼 前的一切。

我們一直對觀眾的回饋感到好奇,亦渴望 聆聽他們分享觀演感受。我們期待與遙遠國 度的觀眾討論想法,因為不同的文化會互相 交錯,在迴聲中產生各種共鳴。

To be in the same place yet exist in two worlds simultaneously is an intense sensation we’ve longed to experience artistically. No reality now embodies this vision: the co-existence of two realities as a playground.

The issue of life and death is a sensitive topic, but when we touch on it we momentarily forget our technological devices and dive together into a profound reflection on our own lives. Live performance adds tension and excitement to these reflections, while virtuality paradoxically enhances our presence in this poetic space.

This bold endeavour took five years to realise; to convince 100 spectators to believe for the duration of the show.

We remain curious and eager to hear feedback from those who have been transported by the project, and who share their feelings with us at the end of the performance. We look forward to discussing this with audiences from distant countries, as experiences may intersect from one culture to another, but the echoes surely resonate with different harmonies.

《真 · 幻境界》是一場實驗,將舞台上的舞蹈 演出與虛擬實境合而為一。它邀請我們進入一 個可望而不可即、難以理解且無法預測的異 境,就如它試圖在舞台上演死亡。

舞台上,一場突如其來的暴風雨劃破了守靈儀 式的寧靜,大雨傾盆而下,光線晃動。轉瞬 間,影像浮現眼前。你不是在做夢,只是被手 上的虛擬實境(VR)裝置引導,走進惝恍迷離 的平行世界。

What if there were other realities to which we had no access? Other lives, other worlds, other deaths, as close as they are imperceptible.

No reality now is an experiment combining dance on stage and virtual reality. It invites us into a beyond—inaccessible, unfathomable, unintelligible, like the death that it places on the stage.

On stage, a storm interrupts a funeral wake. The rain begins to pour down and the light trembles. Then suddenly, the image appears. You are not dreaming: your VR device has just taken control, plunging you into a parallel world.

As you visualise yourself sitting in the very same place, the virtual copy of the stage distorts and takes liberties, proposing a double interpretation of the piece. A dialogue between these two visions then begins, like a diptych or a confrontation, expanding their own fields of resonance.

Teaming up with immersive experience designer Charles Ayats, choreographer Vincent Dupont has revived one of his previous works, Souffles . Wagering that virtual reality and live performance are complementary, the two artists have not simply “augmented” this 2010 piece; they propose two simultaneous versions of it and the audience can move freely between each.

Norealitynow is a show which questions everything—life, death and the nature of reality itself—as it brings the real and virtual worlds face to face. The result of a five-year project led by choreographer Vincent Dupont and virtual reality (VR) expert Charles Ayats, Noreality now uses unique, groundbreaking technology developed specifically for the show that allows the audience to experience parallel realities.

For the first time, thanks to VR headsets, each spectator can alternate between watching the live dance performance and an augmented version whenever they choose. Without the headset, audience members will see the stage and the dancers in real life. But when they put on the headset, they will enter a virtual world of infinite possibilities where space expands and the dancers are transformed into avatars or take on fantastical forms, such as turning into a silver sphere.

“We wanted the spectators to be able to navigate freely between live and VR,” Ayats explains. However, regular VR devices were seen as too cumbersome, so the show’s creators took inspiration from old-fashioned opera glasses, which allowed spectators to “zoom in” whenever they chose. For Dupont, this was particularly appropriate as it brought together “a historic part of theatre with something completely new”. In a triumph of technological wizardry, each headset provides the wearer with the perspective from their own seat and the network of 100 headsets can be reconfigured for each new venue. Dupont says that in order to achieve the goal of combining reality with VR, “we wanted [the spectators] to have the same perspective as they do for the live performance. If their point of view through the glasses was completely different, it wouldn’t work.”

《真 ・ 幻境界》以一整面純白軟墊牆展開序 幕,舞台上的三名舞者——飄浮的屍體、死神 與薩滿,在這個異樣的空間試圖讓死者重生。

作品探討的是如何跨越界限:真實與虛擬世 界、生命與死亡,以至舞台與觀眾席之間那隱 形的分界線。《真 ・ 幻境界》以杜邦在 2010 年的作品《舒芙蕾》(Souffles)為創作藍本。 他解釋:「這個作品涉及死亡,涉及從一個狀 態過渡到另一個狀態。採用虛擬實境亦象徵 科技的日新月異,鼓勵我們以新角度觀看萬 物。」

Another major technological challenge, notes Ayats, was the live utilisation of motion-capture technology. “We really wanted to do it, but it wasn’t stable enough for two 40-minute shows a day,” he says. In the end they resorted to what Dupont calls, with a twinkle, “a sort of subterfuge”. Instead of fitting the performers with motion-capture sensors and screening the VR footage live, the augmented version is instead pre-recorded and the dancers must duplicate the recording exactly.

While acknowledging that this is a constraint for the dancers, Dupont emphasises that VR is a tool which reflects the body with remarkable precision. “When I watched their avatars, I found that I could recognise each dancer and their interpretation of the movement.” And Ayats, who admits spending more time “sitting at a screen” than in the theatre, adds: “In our industrialised society, we sometimes forget about the body and dance is 100% the body. So combining VR with dance seemed a valid way to question new forms.”

The technology developed for No reality now , including the headsets and their programming, is being made available to other artists and a number of applications have been received for new projects. “So it can be shared. That’s important,” says Dupont, pointing out that artists are keen to incorporate new tools in their work as soon as they are reliable enough to be used on stage.

No reality now takes place in a plain white setting of padded walls. It opens with a levitating corpse that comes to life—Death (the Reaper) and a Shaman complete the cast of three.

Its key theme is the crossing of thresholds, the passages between real and virtual worlds, life and death, or the auditorium and the stage. It is based on Dupont’s 2010 work Souffles , which, he says, “deals with death, with the idea of a passage from one thing to another, and this new tool with the headsets also deals with passing from one state to another, to see things in a new way”.

If such profound topics seem a surprising choice for VR, often associated with entertainment such as video games, Ayats says they soon found that “this aspect of questioning the usual way of looking at death, at the afterlife, brought up more ideas than other themes we looked at”.

For Dupont, it was also crucial that the live component was strong enough to compete with the attraction of VR “so the audience wouldn’t stay glued to their headsets all the time”. Still, spectators should ensure they’re watching the VR version at the end, when Dupont says something “extraordinary” happens. No spoilers here, but “for each spectator to live it is a fascinating experience, a new experience”.

The Jockey Club InnoArts Series is dedicated to promoting innovation in the performing arts and pushing artistic boundaries. This year, to foster an exchange of knowledge between visiting and local artists, the series has introduced a new series of workshops aimed at local arts practitioners who are eager to break new ground.

In 2024, potential participants submitted creative proposals that merged art and technology. Five groups were ultimately selected to participate in a three-day intensive workshop led by the creative team behind VR dance programme No reality now on 15, 16 and 18 March.

During the workshop, the French experts will offer personalised feedback on the projects presented by the selected groups to help them further develop their initiatives and enhance their creative potential. The programme will feature a blend of lectures covering topics such as dramaturgy, stage direction, and live management of XR and motion capture technologies for stage performances. The workshop will culminate in a pitch session, allowing participants to reflect on their achievements over the three days. This will also be a prime opportunity for them to showcase their innovative ideas to industry partners and producers, fostering valuable connections and potential collaborations.

The detailed workshop schedule and areas of exploration are as follows:

Conception , Choreographer & Scenographer

Vincent Dupont

Performer and choreographer Vincent Dupont is an associate artist at the Maison de la Danse and the Lyon Biennale de la danse for the 2023/24 season.

A multidisciplinary artist, Dupont combines diverse art forms in his choreography. Theatre, film and art installations all have a place in his singular work: a dizzyingly surreal blend of the archaic with the ultramodern. In Incantus and Air , the dancers’ breath is played through speakers, melding with the voice of a contemporary music ensemble.

Dupont draws on the visual arts ( Jachères improvisations was inspired by an installation by artist Stan Douglas), and the dramatic arts ( Mettre en pièce(s) is a free adaptation of the play Offending the Audience ). His work is both radical and transgressive. In Hauts Cris (miniature) , Dupont sits alone in a cluttered, bourgeois living room, until his rage boils over into destruction. In Refuge , an allegory of duality, two manual labourers, stuck performing repetitive movements, sabotage the machine that alienates them. In pieces such as Stéréoscopia and No reality now , he creates immersive installations that warp audience perceptions. Condensed from fragments of dreams, his work examines the lines between reality and fiction, image and life, and arouses heightened sensations in the mind of the audience.

Charles Ayats

Charles Ayats is a writer/director and immersive/ interactive experience designer. His experience Phi was selected for the ARTE/NFB Interactive Haiku project. He is passionate about making informative, meaningful, innovative, politically engaged work, in the form of web documentaries (such as Check-in , Pas si bêtes les Animaux and Tati Express ), and video games, such as Type:Rider, a three-part game about the history of typography, which he co-directed in 2013.

Always on the lookout for new forms of storytelling, he often participates in hackathons (Artgame weekend, StoryHack Tribecca/Cern, Game in the City, HackLaMisère) as a way to enrich his previous experience and training (at Cifap, Gobelins, Dixit and the Institut national de l’audiovisue in France).

A lover of virtual reality, Ayats adapted MarcAntoine Mathieu’s graphic novel SENS (2016) for VR. The work is a voyage through an invisible labyrinth exploring both the notion of the absurd and the role of the player within the game.

After making the augmented reality short film M.O.A (2020), adapted from Alain Damasio’s futuristic novel The Shealthies , Ayats has been continuing his explorations in storytelling, bodies and space with live performance projects, including Colonie.s and No reality now
