第五十一屆香港藝術節隆重舉行,可 喜可賀。

逾半個世紀以來,藝術節每年均呈獻 多姿多彩的文藝節目,由古典音樂、 歌劇、戲劇,以至舞蹈、多媒體項 目等,包羅萬有,令觀眾大飽眼福。

今屆藝術節以《收音機與茱麗葉》及 《春之祭》芭蕾舞表演揭開序幕,兩 齣經典作品經由著名編舞家愛德華· 克魯格重新編排,加上斯洛文尼亞 國家歌劇院馬里博爾芭蕾舞團傾力演 出,萬眾矚目;約五星期後,歐洲頂 尖交響樂團—德國班貝格交響樂團將 登台獻技,為今年藝術節畫上圓滿句 號。其間上演的焦點節目還有: 國 際星級女高音安娜·涅翠柯與丈夫男 高音尤西夫·伊瓦佐夫聯袂表演的音 樂會;由藝術家威廉·肯特里奇精心 製作、南非木偶劇團和比利時里切卡 爾古樂團奇妙演繹的蒙特威爾第歌劇 《尤利西斯歸鄉記》;由芭蕾天后娜塔 麗亞·奧斯波娃領銜主演的芭蕾巨 星之《「世」不可擋》及傳奇舞姬之 《趾尖》;以及國際鋼琴大賽冠軍劉曉 禹的演奏會。

藝術節向來十分重視本地演藝人才, 致力讓他們一展才華。今屆藝術節亦 會上演多個粵劇節目,包括《竹林愛 傳奇》、「毛俊輝.粵劇情」、《畫皮》 (精新版),以及「短篇粵劇—戲說 八德」; 並帶來其他本地作品,包括 《飯戲攻心》踏台版、《末戀.無愛合 約》、舞蹈歌劇《兩生花》等等,定 必精彩萬分,不容錯過。

大眾還可通過藝術節,體驗繽紛的藝 術魅力。法國食蟻獸沉浸式藝術工作 室創作的《第一步》,會邀請觀眾互 動共舞;在大館舉行的一系列免費藝 術科技節目,以及「無限亮」計劃, 亦會讓公眾參與其中。「無限亮」計 劃由本地和海外不同能力的藝術家擔 綱演出,鼓勵青少年衝破界限,探索

I would like to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival on the organisation of its 51st edition.

For more than half a century now, the Arts Festival has enthralled audiences with a superb annual programme of arts and culture performances embracing classical music and opera, theatre, dance, multimedia and a great deal more.

This year’s Arts Festival programme opens with the Slovene National Theatre Maribor’s ballet performances of Radio and Juliet and Le Sacre du Printemps, two classics re-imagined by celebrated choreographer Edward Clug. It closes, nearly five weeks later, with a concert by Germany’s Bamberg Symphony, one of Europe’s greatest orchestras. Other highlights include Anna Netrebko, one of the world’s great sopranos, performing with her husband, tenor Yusif Eyvazov; artist William Kentridge’s remarkable production of Monteverdi’s opera, Il Ritorno d’Ulisse, brought to life by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company and Belgium’s Ricercar Consort periodinstrument ensemble; Ballet Superstars’ Force of Nature and Legendary Ballerina

in Two Feet featuring supreme ballerina Natalia Osipova; and concerts by the international award-winning piano virtuoso Bruce Liu.

As always, the Festival shines a spotlight on standout artists from Hong Kong. This year’s Cantonese opera offerings include Love in the Bamboo Grove, Cantonese Opera Classics Circa 2023, The Painted Skin (Refined Edition) and Virtues and Morality—Four Cantonese Operas. Local productions including Table For Six on Stage, Loveless Romance and Love Streams are sure to be among this year’s Festival highlights.

Several programmes invite public participation as well, including the First Steps participatory dance performances staged by France’s Tamanoir Immersive Studio, as well as Tai Kwun’s free series of arts tech productions and the Festival’s No Limits programme, led by local and international artists of varying abilities. No Limits’ offerings emphasise youth exploration, as does the Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival with its school tours, preperformance workshops and special programming. And then there is the Festival PLUS creative activities that bring artists and audiences together in communities throughout Hong Kong.

I am grateful to the Hong Kong Arts Festival for its inspired commitment to the arts and to Hong Kong’s continuing rise as an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange. My thanks, as well, to the Festival’s many generous sponsors and donors.

I am delighted to welcome you to the 51st edition of the Hong Kong Arts Festival. As the city recovers from the disruption of the pandemic, the Festival is returning with an array of live performances featuring top-notch artists from Hong Kong and across the world. Despite the boundless possibilities offered by the internet, attending performances in person remains an irreplaceable experience. It gives me great pleasure to share this collective experience with you today.

The Festival is made possible by the generosity of our supporters.

I wish to thank the HKSAR Government, via the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, for the annual subvention which underpins our long-standing work. I am also grateful for the ongoing contributions from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, as well as corporate sponsors, charitable foundations and individual donors. My sincere thanks go

to the participating artists for their dedication to bringing the best to our audiences, especially those returning after previous cancellations due to the pandemic.

Our theme this year, “Coming Back, Moving Forward”, represents our determination to come back in full force after several years of uncertainties caused by the pandemic. After five decades of hard work and dedication, the Festival has established itself as a premier arts event in the region and an important international arts festival. We are honoured to carry this legacy forward, while advancing our multifaceted work to stay relevant in the present. In the 51st edition, we discover creative voices through new renditions of masterpieces, cross-disciplinary collaborations and commissioned productions— all of which showcase the breadth and endless possibilities of the performing arts, taking us one step

forward in this journey of exploration. Beyond exceptional performances, we are also offering a series of auxiliary PLUS programmes to enhance audience engagement and provide deeper insights into our programmes. Our strong commitment to arts education is seen in the extensive outreach activities aimed at inspiring the younger generation of Hong Kong through promoting quality arts.

香港藝術節於 1973 年正式揭幕,是國際藝壇中重要的文化 盛事,於每年 2、 3 月期間呈獻眾多優秀本地及國際藝術家 的演出,以及舉辦多元化的「加料」和教育活動,致力豐 富香港的文化生活。

香港藝術節 是一所非牟利機構,2022/ 23 財政年度預計收

入(包括第 51 屆香港藝術節及 2023 年「無限亮」)約港 幣一億五千萬,當中香港特區政府的年度撥款佔總收入約 18%,另外約 24%需來自票房收入,約 43%則需依賴來自 各大企業、熱心人士和慈善基金會的贊助和捐款。預計餘 下的約 15%則來自其他收入,包括政府針對捐款和贊助收 入而提供的配對資助。

The HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year.

The HKAF is a non-profit organisation. The total estimated income for FY2022/23 (including the 51st Hong Kong Arts Festival and 2023 “No Limits”) is approximately HK$150 million. Current Government annual funding accounts for around 18% of the Festival's total income. Around 24% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and around 43% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals and charitable foundations. The remaining 15% is expected to come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. The HKAF has presented top international artists and ensembles across multiple genres, such as*:

The HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 250 local productions across genres including Cantonese opera, theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include The Plague, Always by Your Side, Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family – A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Danz Up, Datong – The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs and Murder in San Jose, to name a few.

The HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina

成立 30 年來,已為逾 810, 000 位本地中學生及大專生提供 藝術體驗活動。藝術節近年亦開展多項針對大、中、小學 生的藝術教育活動,包括由國際及本地藝術家主持的示範 講座及工作坊、學生展演、演前講座、公開彩排、以及欣 賞藝術節演出。同時,通過「學生票捐助計劃」,藝術節 每年提供約 10, 000 張半價學生票。

香港藝術節每年主辦一系列多元化並深入社區的「加料節 目」,例如電影放映、示範講座、大師班、工作坊、座談 會、後台參觀、展覽、藝人談、文化導賞團等,鼓勵觀眾 與藝術家互動接觸。

2019 年正式開展,透過一系列的演出及多元的 教育及社區外展節目,「無限亮」致力創造共融空間,讓不 同能力人士均可以一同欣賞、參與、擁抱藝術。

Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake co-commissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera.

The HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 30 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 810,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year.

The HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

The HKAF actively promotes inclusiveness and understanding via the arts to every corner of the community. The “No Limits” project, co-presented with The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, was launched in 2019. Through a series of performances and diverse arts experiences for students and the community, “No Limits” strives to create an inclusive space for people with different abilities to share the joy of the arts together.

The HKAF officially launched the Hong Kong Arts Festival Foundation in 2022 to provide greater financial security and longterm sustainability for the Festival. Donations to the Foundation will help the Festival to present large-scale projects which its annual budget cannot cater for. (2023

故事大綱 SYNOPSIS

年輕的孫帝象剛從檀香山留洋回來,矢志改變迂腐的中國。他於領 洗成為基督徒時,改名「孫日新」。憑着滿腔熱誠和堅定理念,孫 日新與好兄弟陸皓東、陳少白、楊鶴齡、尢列等人開始秘密策劃革 命,眾人鬥志激昂,揭竿起義……

然而孫日新真正最重要的鬥爭,其實從未被記載在這段耳熟能詳 的歷史之中……

The young Sun Tai-cheong, having just finished studying abroad at Honolulu and returned to his hometown in Guangdong, is determined to bring change to a corrupt China. He then changes his name to “Sun Yat-sen” after being baptised as a Christian. Fuelled by overflowing enthusiasm and perseverance, he teams up with comrades Luk Ho-tung, Chan Siu-pak, Yeung Hok-ling, Yau Lit and other like-minded folk, secretly planning a revolution against the Qing government. The group rises in ardent spirit and an uprising is imminent.

Sun's truly pivotal fight, however, has never been recorded on the familiar pages of history…

作曲及音樂總監的話 Composer and Music Director’s Note

周星馳說過:「做人如果沒有夢 想,跟鹹魚有甚麼分別?」人 要活得有意義,的確不能沒有 夢想。但當你的夢想,是關乎 一個國家的命運和未來時,怎 樣才能經過無數挫折和失敗, 仍能初心堅定不移?當中要經 歷多少次自我反省、妥協和重 生?革命理想是民族使命, 還是年少的一時氣盛?音樂 劇《日新》要探討和呈現的就 是這個革命理想形成和堅持的 過程。一段成長的歷程,又 豈能是一部音樂劇能說得一清 二楚,但若能透過音符、歌 詞、文本和表演道出箇中情感 點滴,引發共鳴,已經心滿意

足了。這次創作,談不上甚麼 音樂上的革新,但也算小小突 破了自己慣常的創作思維,歌 曲的風格不一定要緊扣時代背 景,讓音樂稍添多元化色彩。

最終是功是過,就像革命一 樣,只能待他人來論定。

此刻為《日新》在多次延期 後最終能與觀眾見面而感 到欣慰,團隊在過去幾年 遇上各種挫折和突變下付 出的努力和堅持,正正體 現了孫中山的奮鬥精神—— 吾志所向,一往無前, 愈挫愈奮,再接再厲!

Stephen Chow once said: “If a man doesn’t have a dream, how is he different from a salted fish?” We all need a dream to live a meaningful life. But when your dream concerns the fate and future of a nation, how do you always remember why you started, especially after experiencing countless setbacks and failures? How many selfreflections and compromises do you have to make, and how many times do you have to be revived? Is a revolution a mission of the people, or is it simply the result of youthful impulsivity? The Yat-sen Musical aims to reveal how the dream of a revolution is nurtured and upheld. It’s difficult to portray such a huge journey in just one musical. But if the melodies, lyrics, dialogue and performances can reveal the emotions within the process and resonate with the audience, I will be content. In creating this work, I wouldn’t say I made any breakthroughs in music, but I did get out of my usual creative mindset. The style of the songs does not necessarily reflect the era of the musical, and this allows the music to be more diverse and distinct. Just like a revolution, whether our work succeeds or not will depend on what others think.

I am pleased to see the Yat-sen Musical finally being presented after many delays. The team’s efforts and persistence in the face of various obstacles and sudden changes during the past few years clearly illustrate the fighting spirit of Sun Yat-sen.

I will continue chasing my dreams without fear, remain unyielding against setbacks, and never stop making every effort!

編劇的話 Playwright’s Note

要成就出美好的事,從來都 不容易。

從事編劇工作二十年,《日新》 是我遇過最難寫的一個劇本。

我的第一個舞台劇本,第一個 音樂劇劇本,第一個人物傳記 劇本,在同一次的創作内出現。

這次做得最多的,就是狠心地 推倒重來,再推倒重來。將 無數辛苦找來的資料放進故事 後,又大手大手的減去; 將寫 好的段落重組又重組,再狠心 地十多頁十多頁的刪走。感謝 陪我走過這趟創作之旅的團隊 成員,作曲的金先生、作詞的 岑爺、導演鄧偉傑、前年「工

作坊展演」的導演馬嘉晉、藝 術節的蘇國雲先生與及不得不 愛的主演凌文龍。

《日新》的劇本創作難,然而呈 現在舞台上的歷程一樣艱難, 我已數不清因為疫情影響下, 曾經改動過多少次演出日期與 形式,我在 2019 年年尾受到 邀約,走了三年多,來到 2023 年,《日新》才能正正式式登 上舞台。

在這個難以掌握的年代,一個 計劃最終能夠得到實踐,是難 能可貴的。

而巧合的是,《日新》所講的正

正就是──排除萬難。

「排除萬難」這四個字我們都 講得很順口,但可有想過「萬 難」,可以是有多難? 如果「萬難」真的是一萬種不 同的困難,不是所謂咬緊牙關 就會撐得過,還要承受你所想 像以外,甚至價值觀以外的犠 牲,才能有機會取得成功,你 願意嗎?

無論是孫日新去改變一個時 代,還是我們要在大時代的 洪流中留下來,都一樣要排 除萬難。

既然那樣難,我們到底要抱着 怎樣的信念,才能強大到可以 排除萬難,一往無前? 許勝,不許敗。

It’s not easy to create something truly beautiful.

Throughout my career as a scriptwriter of more than 20 years, the script for the Yatsen Musical has been the most difficult to write. It is my first stage play, my first musical and my first script inspired by the life story of a real person.

The most strenuous times came when I tore the script apart to revise it again and again. After putting in painstakingly researched details, I would remove chunks of them from the script; after rearranging completed sections of the script, I would delete dozens of pages. I am grateful to my fellow team members who have seen me through this creative journey, including Peter Kam, Composer and Music Director; Chris Shum, Lyricist; Tang Wai-kit, Director; Eugene Ma, director of the preview in 2021; Mr So Kwokwan from the HKAF; and our lead actor Ling Man-lung, who is simply lovable.

While the writing of the Yat-sen Musical was challenging, the staging of the production was even harder. I have lost count of the number of times we had to reschedule the run or change the performance format due to the pandemic. I received the commission to work on the production at the end of 2019. And now, three years later, the Yat-sen Musical is finally making its premiere in 2023.

In these times of uncertainty, it

is incredible to be able to bring such a project to fruition.

Coincidentally, that is exactly what the Yat-sen Musical is about—defeating all the odds.

“Defeating all the odds” is an idiom that we say every so often. Yet have we ever thought about how slim these “odds” are?

Imagine that “defeating all the odds” means you will not only endure countless difficulties, but you must make sacrifices that you have never imagined—even ones that defy your values. Are you willing to do it?

Be it Sun Yat-sen, who fought for the dawn of a new era, or those of us who are trying to find their footing in a shifting era, we must defeat all the odds.

In the face of tremendous difficulties, what kind of faith do we need to defeat all the odds and keep moving forward?

We will triumph and never give in.

Lyricist’s Note

落墨見人

音樂劇《日新》由起步到如今 正式公演,歷時近三載。今日 回首,彷如昨天。這次合作, 我不止跟創作團隊(都是早有 認識的好朋友)再續友誼,也 加深認識包括蘇國雲先生在內 的香港藝術節同事,經歷過去 三年的起起伏伏,心中佩服, 於我別有意義。

音樂劇《日新》說的是成就大 事之前的崎嶇與矛盾。如何把 當中的跌宕,寫得入心入肺而 不入於濫情,是其中的考題。 有人說,大義凜然的事,若果 出之以大義凜然的用字用詞, 效果也許就互相抵消。今日重 讀歌詞,似乎我也聽信此說。

劇中歌詞,用詞儘量淺出,多 用尋常話語,務求易聽,再來 生出感動的效果。

例如《新途》——「我發覺有把 聲音/說要改變/也發覺我 的身軀——向前」。普通台詞 說「身軀向前」,也許就是一般 行上前,配上音樂,就另一層 意思了。

說到尋常話語,《落墨見人》及 《革命香爐》兩首歌俯拾皆是。 如《革命香爐》——「革命完/ 你做慈禧至係問題」; 在《落 墨見人》一曲的尾句,我還因 應旋律,玩了個小小的文字 遊戲——「落墨見人/望——自 己」; 此樂句的「望」字乃全音 符,拉四拍,才接上「自己」 二字。這樣斷句,生出了「落 墨見人望」與「望自己」兩個 短句,意義互相影響,寫得特 別過癮。

之前落墨,如今見人,回望自 己,草就此文。但願人人滿 意,盡興而歸。

Writing for Life

The musical Yat-sen is finally ready to be revealed to the public. It’s been three years since we started work on it, but it feels like only yesterday. The collaboration has renewed old friendships among the production crew I have known for years, and deepened the connection with colleagues from the Hong Kong Arts Festival, including Mr So Kwokwan, the Programme Director. The production coincided with three years of upheaval, so it's especially meaningful to me and I would like to express my gratitude to everyone involved.

Change and challenges often pave the way to success in revolutionary endeavours. And it requires a lot of work to portray this hardship without

overwhelming people. People say that words forcefully calling for justice cannot do it justice. I find myself agreeing with this as I re-read the lyrics again today. Many lines in the musical sound like words we hear every day, but with a deep meaning. Simple but deep.

For example, in the song Sun's Journey: “I notice a voice that tells me to change. I find my body moving forward.” “Moving forward” might sound plain and simple, but when the phrase is accompanied by music, its symbolic meaning is amplified.

Speaking of phrases that are commonly used, there are more in Writing for Life and Revolutionary Boys.

For example, in Revolutionary

Boys: "After the revolution, I have a problem with you at the top.” And in the closing line of Writing for Life, I hid some wordplay beneath the melody: “Everyone will be watching. Yourself.” The semibreve of the word “watching” counts for four beats, then followed by “yourself”. The messages behind the breaking lines, “everyone will be watching” and “watching yourself”, are interweaved, allowing a more expansive lyrical interpretation. This makes writing so fun.

The blood has been turned to ink and now everyone is watching. Watching myself writing the closing line here. I hope you have a good time— please, be our guest and enjoy.

在上次《陪着你走》( 2019 年 藝術節)排練時,已聽說《日 新》的構想,對藝術節是一次 挑戰,也沒想到經過這麼多事 情後,這個挑戰會落到我身上。

要把一個歷史人物作改編,還 要是音樂劇形式,在選材及敍 事角度是相當考功夫,怎樣切 入、怎樣發展以至中心思想的 定位,對整個製作團隊都是充 滿挑戰。

也許很多事情都改變了,但在 劇場創作中,整個團隊依然毫 不保留地真誠付出,認真看待 每一個細節,互相扶持合作, 為的是希望能夠帶給觀眾一個 具思考性的演出。這,是永遠 不會改變的。

我對表演藝術的鍾愛,便是因 為它的真.善.美!

今天,我們終於可以排除萬 難,與各位分享這份成果。

During rehearsals for Always by Your Side at the previous 2019 Hong Kong Arts Festival I was involved with, I had already heard of the plans for the Yatsen Musical. I thought it would be challenging, but I never thought that, after everything that had happened, I would be the one facing the challenge.

Rewriting the story of a historical character, especially in the form of a musical, requires much careful thought in selecting the theme and creating the story. The entire production team faced a tough challenge in having to decide the entry point, the development of the narrative and the expression of the central idea.

Perhaps many things have changed. But throughout the production of the musical, the team was spared no pain and made earnest efforts, considering every details. We worked hard together to present the audience with a thoughtprovoking performance. Such sincerity never changes.

My deep affection for the performing arts comes from its authenticity, goodness and beauty.

Today, we can finally share with you what we have accomplished against all odds.

音樂劇《日新》歷史人物人性化

Yat-sen Musical: Humanising Historical Figures

如果陳詠燊不叫詠燊,叫日新毫不違和。孫中山取教名「日新」,此名源於《禮記·大學》的「苟日 新,日日新,又日新」。孫提醒自己勤於省身革新。陳詠燊首度寫舞台劇而且是音樂劇《日新》劇 本,可謂今日的我一新昨日的我。跟另外兩位創作人——作曲的金培達、填詞的岑偉宗討論後,改; 與演員凌文龍聊天後有新意念,改,至今已寫到第十三稿。

If Sunny Chan needs a new name, “Yat-sen” (daily renewal) would suit him too. Adopted by Sun Yat-sen, it was derived from a saying in “The Great Learning” from the Book of Rites: “If you can improve yourself in a day, do so every day for ceaseless self-improvement.” By taking on the name, Sun Yat-sen reminded himself to practise self-reflection frequently and make constant improvements. As for Chan, in writing for a play for the first time, he created the Musical Yat-sen in a manner that shows he has also taken the idea of renewal to heart. After discussions with the co-creators, composer Peter Kam and lyricist Chris Shum, and actor Ling Man-lung, Chan made constant changes to the plot. It was eventually revised more than a dozen times.

《西遊記》對照革命之難 世上無嘢阻止到陳為劇本灑上 幽默。他形容《日新》劇本介 乎跟史實與唔跟之間,立足 「最靚」位置,平衡歷史與戲劇 性。《日新》講述孫中山還是不 知天高地厚的青年,夢想可以 救國起義。他與幾個年輕同路 人聚首,會無聊吹水互窒,更 會打邊爐!

陳詠燊更借《西遊記》跨文本 對照孫中山這趟革命歷程,大 膽地把「四大寇」孫中山、陳 少白、尢列、楊鶴齡比喻為孫 悟空、唐僧、豬八戒及沙僧。 「《西遊記》一向我們只當故事 看,其實取西經路上困難超乎 想象,好多含冤受屈、互相出 賣,連師傅都唔認悟空呀。」 陳詠燊想藉這種烘托講成功從 來不易,當事人隨時要嘗一噸 黃蓮提煉的苦楚。

起義這種大事,肯定經過萬千 掙扎,踏盡灰色地帶才見終

點。可是偉人的成功總被描繪 為直路一條。「好多人隨口講排 除萬難,講就易,可能要犧牲 家人、被踐踏自尊。此劇就是 要呈現咩係排除萬難。」

孫中山唱出搖滾熱血

不只故事情節能把歷史人物孫

中山變得立體,音樂一樣可 以!《日新》作曲及音樂總監 金培達是幫角色從 2D 變成 3D 的一員。

創作過多齣音樂劇的金培達, 向來對劇本整體邏輯,廿分重 視。「雖然我唔係編劇,但係 音樂劇劇本同寫甚麼歌有關, 歌曲要夾到戲劇主題,我會稍 為多講幾句。」金培達稱這是 他歷來參與,劇本改得最犀利 的音樂劇。

今次曲詞編劇有如高手過招, 幾位創作人都同意《日新》非 「歷史劇」,而是一齣「成長 劇」,唱好式歌頌不是此劇取 向。「他有所謂犯錯的時候, 但如何爬返起身才是重點。」

詼諧講 認真唱 劇作充滿陳詠燊拿手的幽默, 金培達表示歌曲不用刻意諧 趣。他特別提及講孫中山抱負 的歌曲《新途》。「如果歌好詼 諧,觀眾會捉唔實件事是否認 真。人物對白詼諧,歌曲比較 serious,我覺得是互相配合, 才夠 rich。」

既然開宗明義這非歷史劇,曲 風自然不會刻意復古。「我們

只有 opening 講翠亨村那首歌 是所謂的五音調,帶一點中國 風,其他歌現代感很強,包括 輕度搖滾歌曲,凸顯革命的熱 血與憤怒 ; 又有偏向 Swing 的 歌曲,配合幻想式橋段。

對於音樂劇,他着重觀眾能否 感受歌曲餘韻。「以前我睇音 樂劇離場時會哼住一些旋律, 希望此劇歌曲有記憶點。」

凌文龍從孫日新對照不平坦演 員路

音樂劇中飾演孫日新的凌文 龍,早前在第 27 屆釜山國際電 影節獲最佳新星大獎。其實風 光背後,他曾捱過大半年疫下 零收入的消沉日子。他由孫日 新這角色身上,看見如何面對 內心脆弱。

這是凌文龍首次有大量獨唱的 音樂劇,兼且擔當男主角, 獨挑大樑的他感到壓力巨大,

自問唱功不強的他為了苦練唱 功,他跟隨音樂總監金培達的 指示,同時請來唱歌導師培訓 歌唱技巧,還要兼顧跳舞、演 戲、唱歌及武打場口,絕對是 體能挑戰。

凌文龍同時要進入孫日新的內 心,他認為,孫日新革命成功 前這段反抗之路,以往在戲劇 內較少被提到,他唯有靠想像 代入來演繹,而現實生活中的 挫折反倒為角色注入了層次。

他回想 2018 年憑藉電影《黃 金花》,獲得金像獎最佳新演 員,但獲獎並未為他帶來大量 片約。他離開工作了十年的香 港話劇團,打算以自由身工作 者身份嘗試不同路向,可惜不 久後更遇上疫情,「疫情下有 大半年,我要借錢度日 當 時( 2020 年)真的零收入」。 直至電視劇《 IT 狗》出現,才 令他疫情下有第一份工作。

懂堅持也懂放手 當他飾演孫日新,着重的是其 革命起跌歷程,「這些 M 字型 起伏不斷累積,但其實整體在 不斷上升,這些失敗是支持他 下一個成功」,而這故事至少鼓 勵了他。

問及他最想透過《日新》帶給 觀眾甚麼,他認真沉思了一 會,「人有堅持有追求,會令 人有上升和快樂的力量,但不 要怕自己不堅持,因為我們是 人。正如孫先生也有脆弱一 面,因為他也是人。到有一 刻,你不想再追,便放,讓自 己快樂最重要。有時那種放, 你想不到的,所追求的事就會 來。堅持時要繼續行,但不能 把堅持當作口號,而要細味你

自己是怎樣,承認自己軟弱, 說到底,是你選擇自己如何 生活」。

Seeing revolution through the lens of the fiction Journey to the West

Nothing could stop Chan from adding humour to the story. He says the plot strikes a perfect balance between historical fact and fiction. The musical depicts Sun Yat-sen as a naive teen dreaming of saving the nation through an uprising. He comes together with a few other likeminded youths, who chat, poke fun at each other and even enjoy a hotpot together.

In narrating the revolutionary journey of Sun Yat-sen, Chan even took inspiration from Journey to the West, boldly describing the “Four Bandits” Sun Yat-sen, Chan Siu-bak, Yau Lit and Yeung Hok-ling as Sun Wukong (The Monkey King), Tang Sanzang (the Tang monk), Zhu Bajie (Pigsy), and Sha Wujing (Sandy). “We have always remembered Journey to the West as a story, but the pilgrimage for the Buddhist scriptures was not an easy one, with the protagonists often feeling wronged and betrayed. Tang Sanzang even cut ties with Wukong.” Chan believes the reference to Journey to the West highlights how the road to success is rarely easy, and often involves a great deal of suffering.

In events as significant as an uprising, struggles are inevitable, and the path to victory often involves traversing various grey areas. But the success of heroic figures is often recalled with oversimplification. “People tend

to conclude these historical tales with ‘and all obstacles were removed’, but in reality, this is easier said than done. During the uprising, those involved may have had to sacrifice their families and be stripped of their dignity. This play aspires to put the process of removing all obstacles on full display.”

Hot-blooded Sun Yat-sen ready to rock

While the plot of the musical adds new depth to the historical character Sun Yat-sen, so does the music. Composer and music director Peter Kam is one of the creatives who turned these twodimensional ideas into threedimensional characters.

Having composed for several musicals, Kam is particularly serious about plots following logic. “Although I am not the playwright, the plot of musicals

is intrinsically tied to the type of songs to be included, which need to fit into the theme of the musical. I always request changes if I find the plot illogical.” Kam says the plot of this musical was changed more than any other musical he has worked on.

The process of production brought together various masters of playwriting, music composition and lyric writing. The creators all agree that Yatsen is not a chronological play, but one about growth. It does not blindly worship Sun Yatsen. “He also makes mistakes, but we want to focus on how he learned from them.”

Speaking jokingly but singing seriously

The play was already full of Chan’s sense of humour, so Kam felt the songs did not

need to be intentionally funny. He points to the song Sun's Journey, which speaks of Sun Yat-sen’s ambitions. “If the song was humorous, the audience would doubt how serious he was in making his decisions. The dialogue is more on the comedic side, while the songs remain serious. To me, they complement each other and enrich the final product.”

Since it is made clear that the play is not chronological, it goes without saying that the play does not deliberately include retro songs. “Only our opening song about Cuiheng Village is in a pentatonic scale, carrying more Chinese elements. The other songs are all modern, including light rock songs underlining the passion and anger behind the revolution, and swing songs

for parts of the play about fantasies.”

Still, Kam is concerned about whether the audience will succumb to the charm of the songs. “In the past, after I enjoyed a musical performance, I left while humming the melodies of the songs. So I hope the songs in this musical will leave a strong impression in the minds of the audience.”

Actor’s lessons in vulnerability

Actor Ling Man-lung, who plays Sun Yat-sen in the musical, may have recently received the 27th Busan International Film Festival’s Asia Contents Awards, but despite the glory, he has been through some tough times, being left with no income during the pandemic. In the character Sun Yat-sen, he sees a way to

confront his own vulnerability. This is Ling’s first time playing a character with many solo parts in a musical, and taking the lead placed him under even more pressure. To polish his singing skills, he followed Kam’s instructions and underwent rigorous training, taking vocal lessons from experts to strengthen his technique. Not only that, he has to dance, act, sing and perform martial arts scenes simultaneously, presenting a tough physical challenge.

To play this role, Ling had to gain a thorough understanding of Sun’s character as he walked the road of resistance, but this aspect of Sun’s story had not been comprehensively explored in drama before. Therefore, he relied on the power of imagination by drawing inspiration from his own tough artistic journey.

Ling recalled how in 2018, his performance in the film Tomorrow is Another Day won him the award for Best New Performance at the Hong Kong Film Awards, but that did not bring him many job opportunities. After a decade with the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre, he decided to leave and explore other avenues as a freelancer. Not long after, when the pandemic struck, his acting career was left at a standstill. “For over six months, I lived on borrowed money...During that time [in 2020], I had zero

income.” It was not until In Geek We Trust that he got his first gig since the pandemic.

Time to hold on, time to let go

Returning to the musical Yat-sen, Ling places emphasis on the ups and downs of Sun’s revolution journey. “These M-shaped curves repeatedly appeared over time, yet they followed an upward trend. All these failures turn into the basis for his next success.” And at the very least, this story lifted him up.

When asked what he hoped audiences would take away from Yat-sen, Ling thinks for a while in silence. “Men have persistence

and pursuits, which give one the strength to rise up and be happy. However, we shouldn’t be afraid of losing that will to keep going, for we are human. Mr Sun also had a vulnerable side, for he was human. If, at one point, you no longer wish to be in the chase, then let it go. Your happiness is the only thing that matters. Once you let go, your destiny will follow in ways you cannot imagine. But when you choose to hold on and continue on that path, never pay lip service to perseverance. Instead, see yourself for who you are, be honest with your weaknesses. At the end of the day, you choose your own way of living.”

2017 年,他更首度創作歌劇 《林徽因》。

他曾為超過一百部電影譜曲, 作品風格多變而動人,更曾 十一次獲頒香港電影金像獎最 佳原創音樂與最佳原創歌曲 獎。 1999 年憑《紫雨風暴》獲

金馬獎最佳原創音樂獎 ; 2006 年憑《伊莎貝拉》獲柏林國際 電影節最佳電影音樂銀熊獎, 是該國際獎項第一位華人得獎 者。近期作品包括《七月與 安生》、《北京遇上西雅圖》系 列、《寒戰》系列及 2018 年獲 得香港電影最佳原創歌曲獎的 《大樂師·為愛配樂》。

Peter Kam is a renowned Hong Kong composer who has written numerous musical theatre works, including And Then There’s You, Born to be a Hero, Love you Teresa, Ah! Ku Liang, the awardwinning Mama Love Me Once Again and Jews in Shanghai, which opened the Shanghai International Arts Festival in 2015, and a musical, The Orphan of Zhao in 2021, which was widely popular. And in 2017, Kam composed his first opera, Lin Huiyin.

Kam is an 11-time winner of the awards for Best Original Film Music and Best Original Song at the Hong Kong Film Awards. Known for his diverse and moving compositions, he has scored more than 100 films. In 1999, he won the award for Best Original Score for Purple Storm at the 36th Golden Horse Awards. In 2006, he won the Silver Bear award for Best Film Music for Isabella at the Berlin International Film Festival, a first for a Chinese composer. His recent movie scores include Soulmate, Helios, the Finding Mr Right series, the Cold War series, as well as Concerto of The Bully, which won the award for Best Original Song at the Hong Kong Film Awards in 2018.

In 2007, Kam was commissioned by the Government of the Hong Kong SAR to compose Just

Because You Are Here, the theme song for the 10th Anniversary of the Establishment of the HKSAR. In addition, he was commissioned to compose the theme song for the 2008 Beijing Olympics’ one-year countdown campaign. That same year, the Hong Kong Government awarded him the Medal of Honour for his contributions to the arts.

Sunny Chan is a Hong Kong film director and screenwriter. He is currently a Lecturer (Screenwriting and Creative Development) at the School of Film and Television, The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.

In 2000, he graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) in Film and Television, majoring in Screenwriting. He later received a Master of Arts in Chinese from Lingnan University. He has worked as screenwriter on more than 20 films, including Funeral March (2001), Love Undercover (2002) series, Diva... Ah Hey (2003) and Hidden Heroes (2004)

The first film he both wrote and directed, Men On The Dragon (2018), was nominated in 11 categories at the 38th Hong Kong Film Awards, including Best Director, Best Screenplay

and Best New Director.

Table for Six (2022) is the second film he wrote and directed, and it appeared on screen from MidAutumn Festival to the following year’s Chinese New Year. With box-office revenue exceeding HK$77 million, the film is now the highest-grossing Chineselanguage comedy film in Hong Kong. The movie was nominated in 11 categories at the 41st Hong Kong Film Awards, including Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best New Director.

Chan was also invited by the Hong Kong Arts Festival to take part in theatrical productions. He worked as the playwright of the Yat-sen Musical (work-inprogress preview in 2021 and premiere in 2023) and adapted Table for Six into a stage play titled Table for Six on Stage (2023).

Apart from writing more than 20 film scripts over the years, he has occasionally published pop song lyrics, such as An Uncle's Ballad (RubberBand) and Relentless Love to You (Ivanna Wong), and directed several music videos including Centenary Tree (Hins Cheung).

In recent years, Chan has also dabbled in programme hosting. He hosted Director’s Gate (concurrently as producer) for ViuTV, Hongkongest on FM 90.3, and so on.

岑偉宗,香港作詞人。主力 創作音樂劇及舞台劇,同時也 翻譯戲劇及歌詞。其詞作亦散 見於電影、電視及流行曲,是 少數同時涉足正統、流行、銀 幕、舞台界別的專業塡詞人。

其詞作曾獲第 32 屆香港電影 金像獎最佳原創電影歌曲獎、 第 43 屆台灣電影金馬獎最佳 原創電影歌曲獎,兩度獲香 港 CASH 金帆音樂獎,以及四 奪香港舞台劇獎最佳原創曲 詞獎等。

Chris Shum is a celebrated lyricist from Hong Kong, specialising in musicals and theatrical productions, while also translating plays and lyrics. His work spans movies, television dramas and pop music, illustrating his unique position as a professional lyricist working in serious music, popular culture, the film industry, as well as the theatrical field.

He won the award for Best Original Film Song at the 32nd Hong Kong Film Awards, the award for Best Original Film Song at the 43rd Golden Horse Awards, and two awards the CASH Golden Sail Music Awards. He has also won the award for Best Original Music four times at the Hong Kong Drama Awards.

Shum wrote the script and lyrics for productions including The Woman in Kenzo (2021), a play adapted from the novel of the same name by Chin Ma-li, and Pica Pica Choose (2018), a collaborative production by Mr Wing Theatre Company (Taiwan) and Yat Po Singers. Other works include the script and lyrics for Yat Po Singers’ This Victoria Has No Secrets and Hong Kong Repertory Theatre’s La Cage aux

Folles. His recent works include The Impossible Trial—a musical (2022) by the West Kowloon Cultural District and the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre, while he also wrote the Cantonese lyrics for the Disney animated films The Lion King (2019) and Frozen 2 (2019), as well as lyrics for the soundtrack of Dante Lam’s film The Rescue (2021).

He is currently writing the lyrics for a new musical by the Perfect Match Theatre from Taiwan titled Twenty-one, an adaptation of Matilda Tao’s novel.

Shum has authored several books on lyric writing and theatre.

Tang Wai-kit is the art director of the We Draman theatre group and the chairman of The Alliance of Theatre Professionals of Hong Kong. Tang graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts' School of Drama. Tang studied and worked in Paris, London and Seoul before his return to Hong Kong in 2007.

During the past 30 years, Tang has directed more than 50 stage productions. His musical works include co-directing with Lam Lap Sam in various HKAPA productions such as Damn Yankees, A Charles Dickens Christmas Musical and The Pajama Game. His overseas projects include RootOne Company’s The Rocky Horror Picture Show in Korea, iMusical’s Van Gogh and The Moon and Sixpence in Shanghai.

Tang has collaborated several times with the Hong Kong Arts Festival. He has directed productions including The Unexpected Man, Danz Up and Always by Your Side, and performed in Murder in San Jose and Smear.

Margaret Cheung is anin demand musical theatre performer, vocalist and vocal coach. Cheung received acting training at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. She has worked frequently with the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, and was invited by the orchestra to present a solo concert "My Technicolor Childhood" in 2017. Cheung hasbranched out into a cappella (Yatpo Singers, Vsing), Cantopop backup singing (Joey Yung, Andy Lau, Deanie Yip, Anthony Lun, Mimi Lo, and so on), and voiceover work (Cantonese dubbing for Luisa in Disney's Encanto) in recent years.

She is mentored by Eli Fung (Beilosi) in voice and studies the Estill Voice Model with Naomi Eyers. She is currently an Estill Master Trainer-Candidate.

Ling Man-lung graduated from the School of Drama at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 2008, and obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) Degree in Acting. In 2016, he was nominated as Best Leading Actor (Comedy/ Farce) at the 25th Hong Kong Drama Awards for his role in The Sin Family. His other notable works include the documentary Echoes of The Wave on Kitchee football club competing in the AFC Championship League, an RTHK documentary on the late writer Lee Yee, and Festival Irene, a festival in honour of the works of Cuban writer María Irene Fornés with all proceeds going to research on Alzheimer’s disease.

Michael Wong graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts' Excel BTEC Musical Theatre Programme in 2016. After graduation, he decided to pursue a career in music and the performing arts. Wong has performed in

Hong Kong and Guangzhou in musicals and stage plays produced by Spring-Time Stage Production, including Peter Pan, Ten Brothers and so on.

As a singer, Wong released his first Cantonese single, Breakup Anniversary, in 2019. It was produced by Schumann Lee, composed by Johnathan Wong and written by Riley Pong, and was selected as a candidate song for the RTHK music awards ceremony. The following year, Wong and guitarist Tak formed the band DisCover. They released the songs Rainy Season, I Missed You and Living Like Floating Dust in 2020 and 2021.

After graduating in Acting from the School of Drama at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 2021, Ng Cheuk-fai now works as a freelance actor.

隆藹宜是香港大學社會科學系畢 業生,主修心理學,副修犯罪

學;也是中文大學家庭輔導及家 庭教育文學碩士畢業生。大學畢 業後,於香港主題公園任職音樂 劇演員,並獲提名國際遊樂園及 景點協會最佳女演員獎。現為 自由身演員、歌者及歌唱導師。

她曾與不同藝術團體合作,包括 心創作劇場、春天實驗劇團、 焦媛實驗劇團、天台製作、香 港藝術節、劇場空間等,亦積 極參與學校教育短劇巡迴演出。

Jessica Lung graduated from The University of Hong Kong, majoring in Psychology with a minor in Criminology. She also completed a Master of Arts Programme in Family Counselling and Family Education from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She is accomplished in singing and dancing, which led to her becoming a full-time performer in a Hong Kong theme park. She was nominated as Best Female Performer at the Brass Ring

Awards for Excellence, held by the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions. She is currently a freelance performer, singer and singing coach. She has been working with Bravo Theatre, Spring-Time Stage Production, Perry Chiu Experimental Theatre, Rooftop Productions, the Hong Kong Arts Festival, Theatre Space and so on. She is also active in performing educational school tours in kindergartens, and primary and secondary schools, as well as special educational needs schools.

黃思豐畢業於香港演藝學院, 主修音樂劇舞。他是音樂劇作 的聯合創辦人,並擁有英國皇 家教師協會踢躂舞中級證書。 在校期間以優異成績屢獲獎學 金,包括成龍慈善獎學金及代 表學院前往廣州作交流演出。 畢業後曾遠赴美國紐約研習 音樂劇。

畢業後曾參與超過五十部舞台 演出,並多次擔任音樂劇中主 要角色,曾與 3AMI、香港話 劇團、香港舞蹈團、Theatre Noir、動藝、演戲家族、7A 班 戲劇組等合作演出。他亦曾任 教於城市當代舞蹈團及演藝進 修學院。

黃思豐現為踢躂舞者、自由身 表演者、導演,並教授踢躂 舞、歌唱、編舞及舞蹈課程。

Huynh Eric graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, majoring in Musical Theatre Dance. He is the founder of Musical Trio, a

local musical creative group in Hong Kong. Huynh attained the ISTD Intermediate Tap Certificate with distinction. During his studies, he was awarded scholarships from the Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation and has performed on a study tour to Guangdong. He went to New York, USA, to study musicals after graduating.

Huynh has been active in arts groups operating in various genres. He was the performer for 3AMI, the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre, the Hong Kong Dance Company, Theatre Noir, DanceArt, Actors’ Family, the 7A Drama Group, among others. He has also taught at numerous groups, including the City Contemporary Dance Company and HKAPA EXCEL.

Sammy Chien graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 2008, majoring in Vocal Studies. He is also a graduate of the Jockey Club Opera Hong Kong Young Artist Development Programme. Chien won first prize in the Operatic Aria competition of the Hong Kong Youth Singing Festival in 2006. He is currently the conductor for Music Clover Choir.

He has performed more than 40 opera roles, including the title role in Gianni Schicchi, The Marriage of Figaro, Papageno in The Magic Flute, Escamillo, Zuniga, Dancairo and Morales in Carmen, Marcello and Schaunard in La bohème, among others.

He has sung the title role of Mendelssohn’s Elijah in concert, baritone solos in Dvorák’s Te Deum, Brahms' Ein Deutsches Requiem, and Mozart’s Requiem, among others.

Coco She graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 2020 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) in Drama. She has participated in productions including Acte Sans Paroles, The Woman in Kenzo, Spring Awakening and Rashomon by Ching Ying Theatre. During her studies, she won the Chung Pu Memorial Scholarships and the HKAPA Alumni Association Scholarships.

She has been a full-time actress in Theatre Horizon for a year and is currently a freelance practitioner. Her recent works include The Falsetto Girls by Theatre Horizon and No News Is True News 2: The White Summer by Windmill Grass Theatre.

畢業於香港演藝學院,獲一級榮 譽藝術學士學位,主修舞台及服 裝設計。曽三度獲得香港舞台 劇獎最佳舞台設計,她為上海歌 劇院舞蹈團《牆》的設計作品成 為世界舞台設計展 2022 專業競 賽部分入圍作品。

曾為香港藝術節計設作品包括 《九江》、《金蘭姊妹》、《重回凡 間的凡人》、《女戲》及《愛之初 體驗》。

Siu Wai-man graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with a Bachelor of Arts (First-class Honours),

majoring in Stage and Costume Design. She has received the award for Best Stage Design at the Hong Kong Drama Awards three times, and was nominated in the category of Professional Exhibition of Set Design at the World Stage Design Exhibition 2022 for her work in The Wall, a production by the Shanghai Opera House Dance Ensemble. Her work at the Hong Kong Arts Festival includes Gangsters of Hong Kong, The Amahs, An Ordinary Man, Girl Talk and Journey to Home.

She has recently participated in the stage design for works including Big MK Day by 100Most x W Theatre; the Vincci Cheuk Talk Show’s Sound of Silence; War of Tung Choi Guys (Spiced Up Edition), Never Ending Hong Kong and Falsettoland by Windmill Grass Theatre; the Lam1Hey Small Talk Show’s What a Terrible World; Laugh Me To The Moon and 29+1 Bloom Again by Kearen Pang Production; Witness for the Prosecution by the Emperor Entertainment Group; and My Very Short Marriage by the Music Nation Group.

陳鈞至為耶魯戲劇學院藝術碩 士,主修設計。留美期間憑《第 十二夜》獲康乃狄克州評論人 獎傑出燈光設計提名。陳鈞至 憑《審美與人的自由》入圍第 二十六屆 ifva 獨立短片及影像媒 體比賽媒體藝術組,亦於多蒙特 劇院附設之 Academy for Theater and Digitality 研究人工智能於劇 場設計之應用。

Samuel Chan received his MFA from the Yale School of Drama, where he majored in Design. His work on Twelfth Night was nominated in the category of Outstanding Lighting Design at the Connecticut Critics Circle Awards. His installation Aesthetics and Freedom of Human Beings was a finalist in the Media Art Category in the ifva Awards in 2020. Chan is a fellow of the Academy for Theatre and Digitality of Theatre Dortmund, where he is researching the application of artificial intelligence in theatrical design.

夏恩蓓畢業於香港演藝學院舞 台音響及音樂錄音系,現為不 同本地及海外舞台製作擔任音 響設計師及工程師,並獲邀請 擔任音樂節音響顧問。近期 作品包括: 自由空間 X 香港話 劇團《大狀王》、香港中樂團 《極》、中英劇團《穿 Kenzo 的 女人》(獲第 30 屆香港舞台劇 獎最佳音響設計獎)、香港原創 音樂劇音樂會《我們的音樂劇 Reimagined 》。

Ha Yan-pui is a graduate of the Theatre, Sound and Music Recording Department of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. She has worked as a sound designer and engineer for many local and overseas productions, and as a sound consultant for various musical festivals. Her recent design works include The Impossible Trial for Freespace x HKREP; Ji for the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra; The Woman

and the Somerset College of Arts and Technology in the UK, majoring in fine art textile and fabric printing technology. He set up his design workshop after returning to Hong Kong. Cheng explores the realms of fashion and theatre. He periodically designs costumes for theatre companies including Theatre du Pif, Theatre Horizon, On and On Theatre Workshop, the Hong Kong Arts Festival, the Hong Kong City Contemporary Dance Company, the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre and the Hong Kong Asia Society.

Gloria Ngai received her degree from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and her Master’s degree from Central Saint Martins. Since graduation, she has been working with different performing arts groups in Hong Kong, including the Hong Kong Arts Festival, Opera Hong Kong, Zuni Icosahedron, the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong, Tang Shu-

wing Theatre Studio, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta and Yat Po Singers. Ngai is a widely recognised production manager in opera and international touring productions. Olivia Tse graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. She has worked with the City Contemporary Dance Company as Deputy Stage Manager, Stage Manager and Acting Production Manager; and the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority as Performing Arts Officer (Dance) and Assistant Manager (Technical and Productions). She now is a freelancer active in various productions.
