About White County

White County sits as the third largest tourist area in the state of Indiana and includes the towns of Buffalo, Burnettsville, Brookston, Chalmers, Idaville, Monon, Monticello, Reynolds and Wolcott.

It consists of four school corporations: Twin Lakes School Corporation, located in Monticello; the Tri-County School Corporation, located in Wolcott; the North White School Corporation, located in Monon; and the Frontier School Corporation, located in Chalmers.

The county offers both residents and visitors many opportunities for recreational activities throughout the year, with Lake Shafer and Lake Freeman located in Monticello, as well as a plethora of festivals throughout each town in the county in the summertime.

White County, like the greater state of Indiana, is filled with residents that believe in showing their neighbors and visitors the well-known Hoosier hospitality that makes the county such a wonderful and warm place to live.

On the Cover: Col. Isaac White

Colonel Isaac White, the namesake of White County, was born in Virginia in 1776 and was the son of a British officer who resigned his commission to join in and participate in the American Revolution, later being killed in active duty.

By 1800, White came to the Indiana Territory to Vincennes, which was a little settlement at that time. After settling there, White married Sallie Leech, and the couple had three children.

In 1805, White was appointed as the superintendent of the salt mines in Gallatin County, Ill. However, in 1806, White was appointed captain of the Illinois milita and, shortly after, major. In 1810, White took part in forming a militia under the territorial governor, William Henry Harrison, and his fate was set as he became part of the Battle of Tippecanoe on Nov. 7, 1811.

Leading up to the Battle of Tippecanoe, representatives of the militia and the confederacy of Native Americans under the leadership of Tecumseh and his brother, the Prophet, in order to try to secure some kind of treaty to avoid war.

However, Harrison knew the Native American tactics, and he suspected that they might attack at night. And so he ordered the men, when they made camp at what we know now as the Battle of Tippecanoe, to stay in uniform, keep their sabers with them, keep their muskets loaded, and he posted sentries all the

way around the rectangular area where the Battle of Tippecanoe was located.

At 4 a.m. on Nov. 7, 1811, Tecumseh’s men attacked the militia, which were sitting targets due to the light from their bonfires illuminating them.

The Native Americans attacked from the west up from Burnett’s Creek. Tecumseh’s men were making some major advances on the militia and crushing their lines. The militiamen doused the campfires and that helped. But the Native Americans kept coming, and they were starting to overrun the militia. It was two groups of cavalrymen who beat them back, one was Spear Spencer, who Spencer County is named after. He was in charge of the Yellowjackets, as they were know. They mounted and they charged right at the ranks and the 4th infantry of professional militiamen pushed Tecumseh’s men down. The only reason that the Native Americans didn’t continue to pursue is they ran low on ammunition, and they were suffering some pretty major losses.

In the end, 63 militiamen were killed, including Col. White, and 146 were wounded in the battle, with 60 of Tecumseh’s men being killed and 60 wounded.

Col. Isaac White now proudly sits on Constitution Plaza in Monticello, as a way to remind residents every day of where the county got its name.

Brookston is a quaint little town located at the crossroads of two important state roads: SR 43 and SR 18.

With a population of just over 1,500, Brookston is located about 15 miles southwest from the county seat, and it shares a road through the heart of town with Reynolds and Chalmers.

In a way, Brookston offers its residents the tranquility and simplicity of country life while still remaining a comfortable drive away from greater civilization. Through SR 43, the town provides a nearly direct path to the city of Lafayette, which boasts a population of more than 70,000, offers a wide variety of restaurants and shopping centers and is located near a Big Ten university.

But don’t be fooled into thinking Brookston has nothing else to offer.

Small-town folk and city people alike are delighted to kick off the fall season with the Brookston Apple Popcorn Festival each year, and several local businesses keep Brookston running strong.

And don’t forget that Brookston was voted to have the best-tasting water in Indiana by the Alliance of Indiana Rural Water in 2013. Combined with its close proximity to a major city and to the rest of the county, the town of Brookston can easily be considered a great place to settle down and raise a family.

Brookston is part of the Frontier School Corporation, with the elementary school located within the town limits. The town is also home to the Heart to Heart Walking Path, a milelong trail within the town that, when seen from above, appears as two connected hearts. Residents and visitors alike enjoy walking the path in the warmer months to see a variety of wildflowers grow throughout the park.

Burnettsville is the home of the “Beehive”.

The town is located in the northeast portion of White County, Ind. along U.S. Highway 24 in Jackson Township, roughly ten miles east of Monticello -- the county seat.

With a population of approximately 343 residents as of July 2014, Burnettsville is a tight-knit, small community, which is the home of one of the Twin Lakes School Corporation’s elementary schools, Eastlawn Elementary.

Like many of the small towns around White County, residents of the town enjoy coming together once a year at its annual Community Day held in September in order to enjoy fellowship, fun and entertainment at the Bee Hive, the town’s community center.

Chalmers is one of the smaller towns in White County, with just about 500 residents living in the area. That small size is met with a large amount of passion from its citizens, however, which is why the town’s motto of “Small Town, Big Hearts” makes perfect sense to display on signs to welcome visitors.

The town of Chalmers is located along SR 43 between Reynolds and Brookston, and it’s only about a 10-mile drive from the county seat of Monticello. Chalmers shares the Frontier School Corporation with Brookston, and the junior/senior high school is located near the eastern entrance of town.

The small town of Monon is the home of the North White Vikings.

This small gem tucked away in the northern limits of White County is filled with people that have a desire to preserve its rich history. Through the Monon Preservation Society, and community volunteers, visitors to the town can enjoy the Monon Caboose in the center of the town, which had originally been part of the Monon Railroad, formerly the Chicago, Indianapolis and Louisville Railway, serving the area from the mid-1800s to approximately the mid-to-late 1900s.

With one eye on preserving the past, the town also has one eye on the future with a diverse population that is continually trying to improve the fading elements that once shined bright along the main road in an effort to keep moving the town forward.

Monticello

The city of Monticello, located on US 24 between Reynolds and Burnettsville, serves as the county seat of White County and is home to the Indiana Beach Amusement Resort, along with Lake Shafer and Lake Freeman.

Indiana Beach, originally Ideal Beach, has been apart of the Monticello community since it was opened in 1926 by founder Earl Spackman. Though the venture merely started as a place for locals to swim, in 1927, it added the excitement of a pair of toboggan slides and throughout the years built roller coaster rides, water park rides and much more.

Indiana Beach switched hands last year from owners Morgan RV to that of California-based Apex Parks Group.

To say that the town of Reynolds has passionate residents would be an understatement. The little town in the heart of White County is filled with citizens that truly care about their town and are active in town government and community endeavors.

This also shows in the entities that occupy the town, such as the beloved Frosty Freeze, which is lined with cars in the summertime as residents look for a cool treat to beat the summer heat, and the newly opened Beaks & Fins, which sees cars lined up along U.S. 24 daily for their lunch and dinner offerings.

The town of Wolcott is located in Princeton Township near the west end of White County on US 24.

Though near the limits of White County to the west, Wolcott is the home of one of the county’s most ambitious projects in recent history, the MidAmerica Commerce Park, which serves as a 600acre industrial park.

However, beyond the bigger projects going on in the town of Wolcott, the town offers a downhome, small-town feel that many seek to find throughout the nation.

With an estimated total population of 995 as of July 2014, Wolcott is a town where neighbors, and all of the townsfolk, know each other by name and greet each other with smiles and sincere ques-

Buffalo

The unincorporated town of Buffalo is located along US 24 on the east side of White County heading towards Logansport.

Since 1973, Buffalo has been the home of the Buffalo Ranch, owned by the Van Meter family, which gives annual tours to local residents, allowing them to get up close and personal with the buffalo that roam their lands. Attendees of the annual tour are also treated to buffalo burgers.

Beyond the Buffalo Ranch, the town also has undertaken initiatives in the past several years in order to bring more recreational opportunities to residents and visitors. This has been seen most notably in the establishment of Buffalo Community Park, which, though still a work in progress, has benefitted local area children and improved the quality of life for town residents.

Idaville

Though not the largest town in the county by any means, the town of Idaville brings the most unique form of entertainment to area residents and tourists twice a year in June and August.

Each year the town hosts their truck and tractor pulls, bringing thousands of spectators from around the nation to the town of approximately 461 residents to watch “highly modified” trucks and tractors compete on a 320-foot track, with whichever competitor pulls their vehicle the farthest taking the top prize.

With events such as the truck and tractor pull, Idaville also focuses on safety with its own volunteer fire department in town.

IU Health White Memorial Hospital

Indiana University Health White Memorial Hospital, located in Monticello, was built in 1956 to serve the local area and since then has grown to serve several surrounding areas. The first hospital was built at 1101 O’Connor Boulevard. In October of 2008, a larger, state of the art hospital with better access and the same exceptional service was built at 720 South 6th Street.

a comprehensive range of services that includes general medical/ surgical services, a 24-hour emergency department, sophisticated diagnostic imaging services, laboratory, chemotherapy, home health and therapy services. All patient rooms are private and boast warm colors and natural light to enhance comfort and healing. A family-friendly environment offers pullout beds for overnight stays and wireless internet access.

CHAMBER RIBBON CUTTING: Lovely Ladies Boutique officially opened in Monticello Nov. 1, 2017 and had a ceremonial ribbon cutting a few weeks later.

More than 40 years ago, a wooden structure stood on the courthouse lawn. The building had a sliding window and someone was on- hand to give out information to residents and tourists.

Later, a log cabin replaced that building on the same location. In front of the log cabin, there were two large arrows...one pointing the way to Shafer and on pointing south to Lake Freeman.​ Following the 1974 Tornado, the Monticello Redevelopment Commission built a unique, triangular-shaped building on the site where information had always been given out. The cornerstone for that building was set in 1976. The signage on the structure read, Chamber of Commerce and Lakes Information Center. In 2014, that building was removed when Constitution Plaza was remodeled.

In August, 2015, the Chamber moved to its new permanent location at 105 West Broadway Street, the former Jerry’s Photography building.
