Hello neighbours It’s definitely the count-down to summer, and June seems to be a good time to think about gardens – we’ve been learning this month about a special garden planted not far from here, in Livingston at the site of Eliburn’s Peel Park around 350 years ago. And anyone with an interest in the healing power of plants will be interested to read that at that time doctors were influential in botany as well as in medicine, see the feature article on pages 8-9. I was pleased this month to be asked by Gary Paterson of East Calder to publish an update on his remarkable 9000km charity cycle ride around Europe. He completed the trek and got home in one piece, but he still has a way to go to meet his fundraising target, so please read his article on page 30 and try to support the causes he is highlighting. Congratulations to Terry Milligan who won the crossword competition in the last issue.

This month, the Black Bull Inn in Mid Calder is offering the chance to win a £25 voucher to spend in the pub. I visited the Black Bull Inn this month to learn a bit more about it, and was very impressed - run by local people working hard and going the extra mile for their customers, read their feature on page 38. And of course it’s gala month – all our local galas take place this month, so a big well done to the hard-working committees who organise them and to all the other volunteers and helpers.
