THE SPACE WITHIN ART

partner: tristin korinek professor: beau johnson lincoln NE

Situated on the southwestern corner of the campus, the Sheldon stands prominently in Lincoln, serving as a symbol of art and architecture. Its impact on the surroundings is evident, with a distinct line beginning to take shape.

As the campus establishes its presence in Lincoln, so does this enclave of artistic colleges within the University. This unique amalgamation of performative and visual arts fosters a space where meaningful interactions unfold.

The perceptible barrier formed by these colleges becomes fully apparent when strolling into the sculpture garden behind the Sheldon. A sense of separation arises as one enters the space, surrounded by sculptures dotting the landscape and music resonating from plays and concerts. It’s a distinctive area on campus where such an immersive experience takes place.

This project endeavors to encapsulate the emotions and sensations evoked by this atmosphere. Serving as an extension of the Sheldon, it aims to bring together the diverse art forms from surrounding colleges, creating a convergence reminiscent of the informal court space fashioned by these institutions. It aspires to be a place where the informal and formal seamlessly blend, crafting a beautiful environment for the merging of artistic expressions.

In this project, my primary responsibility involved conveying the design concept through visual representation and post-production work. Utilizing design software, including but not limited to Photoshop, Lumion, and Rhino, I worked to bring the envisioned design to life with a keen focus on enhancing its visual impact and communicative power.

VIDE VILLA

partner: angela medina professor: architecture office switzerland

The project originates from the previous studio titled “Reimagining the Chocolate Factory.” It explores the interplay between the past and the present, utilizing the Mid-journey as a tool to explore the formulation of a new idea for a conventional structure. The structure serves as an endeavor to offer visitors a chance to engage, learn, and immerse themselves in the captivating process of crafting chocolate.

In this project, my primary focus revolved around the Mid-journey exploration. Throughout the design process, I played a pivotal role in translating the conceptual vision into tangible elements by working on floor plans, sections, and axons. Additionally, I contributed to the site plan design and played a key role in finalizing the elevation design. To achieve these objectives, I proficiently utilized design software like Revit and Illustrator.

The rest of the programs

The building is situated on the old site of a villa that used to sit across the street from the old Camille Bloch factory in Switzerland. This Villa is significant to the site and Camille Bloch’s history because apart from being the original site alongside the first chocolate factory, it was also a residence for the Blochs when they visited the factory in Courtelary. Since the villa has since been demolished, to remind visitors of its presence we propose a ghost whose volume approximates the shape and footprint. Each floor is organized in such a way that the floor plan rotates in the same direction using the Villa Kitchen as an axis.

The structural frame of the outer building incorporates timber, while precast concrete panels serve as the exterior cladding. A simple organizational strategy and texture are employed on each facade to highlight the lone window on every side of the Villa. This design choice contributes to the enigma surrounding what is preserved within. The intentional limitation to one window on each facade allows for a meticulous curation of the interior view, or clues, fostering curiosity among observers passing by.

LABORATORIES OF NEW WORLDS

individual work professor: cruz gracia & nathalie frankowski Lincoln, Ne

The Laboratories of New Worlds project was dedicated to crafting a creative campus environment tailored for artists and influencer. This segment of the campus was conceived with a hardcorist approach, featuring the influence of Joseph Beuys and Isa Genzken in the design process.

Joseph Beuys, a renowned German performance artist, was celebrated for his conceptual artworks. His distinctive use of fabric, often enveloping sculptures or himself during performances, served as a central inspiration. In contrast, Isa Genzken, a contemporary artist, was recognized for her diverse use of materials and colors.

Drawing from these influences, the campus design unfolds in two parts. The first comprises three stories constructed from varying materials and adorned with a spectrum of colors, mirroring Genzken’s artistic vision. The second part incorporates a metal mesh wrapping around these stories, symbolizing Beuys’s concept of fabric wrapping. This synthesis of influences creates a unique and dynamic space within the campus for artistic expression.

THE BATH HOUSE

individual work professor: zachary porter Lincoln, Ne

Situated on the southeastern corner of Woods Park in Lincoln, NE, the bathhouse unfolds as a personal journey shaped by three distinct architectural environments. Upon entering, the concept of time dissipates, and a profound sense of intimacy emerges within the layered structure. The spatial journey is carefully curated, offering pivotal moments of viewpoints, echo, and sensory experiences. This design harmonizes nature, architecture, and the human body, allowing users to engage in a continuous dialogue with their surroundings, heightening their senses and fostering an emotionally charged ambiance.

32 Studio represent - 2019

The project commences by delving into speculative internal environments for bathing, exploring representations that span cold, warm, and hot conditions. These representations conceptualize the idealized and imagined states of the bath, informed by an analysis of programs, spatial conditions, and moods. The creation of the architectural form involves a meticulous study of juxtapositions between the form and the embodied environments, resulting in a design that seamlessly integrates with the envisioned bathing experiences.

TECHAURA

individual work professor: nolan golgert virtual travel

Techaura, a revolutionary digital wearable device designed for virtual travel, empowers users to explore destinations of their choice from the comfort of their surroundings. Unlike traditional transportation services, where drivers physically transport individuals, Techaura, operating on a similar system, introduces a novel approach. Instead of a vehicle, a human equipped with the wearable device becomes the conduit for the virtual tour.

For example, if a user in Lincoln wishes to experience Paris, they can make a request through an app. This request becomes visible to individuals residing in Paris who are willing to facilitate the virtual tour. The chosen guide then dons the Techaura device, serving as the live tour guide for the requester, seamlessly bringing the desired destination to life through the lens of the wearer.

This versatile device features both fixed and detachable components, offering adaptability for various use cases. The product incorporates a combination of aluminum alloys, fabric, and plastic in its construction. The outer shell surrounding the cameras is crafted from durable aluminum alloys, while other sections utilize resilient plastic. Internally, the device is lined with a soft fabric, providing a comfortable experience, and includes an adjustable strap to accommodate different head sizes.
