SEASON GUIDE 2018 - 2019

Visit the Museum The Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum opened to the public in March 2008 in the Historic 1916 Courthouse at 300 North Dixie Highway in downtown West Palm Beach. The countywide history museum enriches the lives of children and adults alike by making local history accessible, interesting, and meaningful. The restored building also serves as the headquarters of the Historical Society of Palm Beach County, which operates the Museum.

The Museum contains a People Gallery, Places Gallery, and Special Exhibition Gallery. The People Gallery introduces more than 100 individuals and families who have contributed to the development of Palm Beach County. The Places Gallery explores Palm Beach County’s natural environment – the animals and ecology that make it unique, from pioneer life to contemporary sports. The Special Exhibition Gallery changes topics annually. Traveling and other temporary exhibits are featured in the Courtroom on the third floor.

The entrance to the Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum is on the second floor of the Courthouse.

For the 20182019 season, Building Paradise: Addison Mizner’s Legacy explores the events in Mizner's life which allowed him to create the then unique Palm Beach lifestyle.

T

his season’s special exhibition at the Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum (through June 29, 2019) pays homage to Addison Mizner, who developed a completely new architectural style for Palm Beach that became the standard for Palm Beach County. The year 2018 marks the centennial of Mizner’s first major Florida commission, the Everglades Club in Palm Beach. In addition to his Palm Beach “society” mansions and commercial properties, Mizner is known for spreading his unique style to Boca Raton, which he dreamed of turning into “the world’s most architecturally beautiful playground.” Mizner’s legacy continues in the 21st century as new developments emulate his style and honor his name.

For the first time, the Johnson History Museum has invited a guest curator, Augustus Mayhew, to add another perspective to the exhibition. Mayhew has gathered artifacts from private collectors and treasures from the Historical Society of Palm Beach County’s collection that show the changes that Mizner introduced to the county, both architecturally and in local business practices.

Through January 5, 2019 Remembering the Storm of ’28

On September 16, 1928, a storm equal to a Category 4 hurricane struck Palm Beach County from Boca Raton to Jupiter. At least 3,000 people died, most of them in the Glades. To commemorate the 90th anniversary of this catastrophe, the Historical Society of Palm Beach County is presenting an exhibit, Remembering the Storm of ’28, in the courtroom of the 1916 Historic Courthouse.

Toys are for girls and boys–right? Actually, we’re never too old to appreciate them! In fact, as we get older, we never forget the excitement we felt from owning a favorite toy. Though toys have changed over time–plastics have replaced metals and corners aren’t so sharp–they still occupy a very important place in our lives.

Journey back through time and recapture the wonderful way that children play with their toys.

Portrayed through 30 photographs, this traveling exhibit will excite museum visitors of all ages!

Florida Girls & Boys & Their Toys is part of the Museum of Florida History’s Traveling Exhibit (TREX) program.

After the devastating freeze of 1895, Flagler decided to expand his railroad south and sent his good friend Philemon Bryan to complete the railbed from Pompano Beach to the New River. Zeiler will reveal relationships that helped build South Florida and explain how interconnected the early settlements really were.

Thursday, February 21, 2019 Jamie Stuve, President & CEO, Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse & Museum Elevating History: The Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Legacy

Known locally as an icon of the county, Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and its surrounding property is much more. One of only three nationally designated Outstanding Natural Areas, this heritage site protects not only significant history, but also rare Florida habitats. Stuve will shed light on how it became a destination and describe the Loxahatchee River Historical Society’s vision for the future.

Thursday, March 21, 2019 Sara Ayers-Rigsby, Director, Southwest and Southeast Regions, Florida Public Archaeology Network The Long Lens of History: Recent excavations at the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area

The Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and Outstanding Natural Area has a history spanning thousands of years. Archaeological investigations have identified continuous occupation of the site from before European contact through the Coast Guard’s use of the area in the 1980s. Ayers-Rigby will highlight discoveries about domestic life and use of the site in the 20th century.

Thursday, April 18, 2019 Tracy Kamerer, Chief Curator, Henry Morrison Flagler Museum An Enduring Treasure: Henry Flagler’s Whitehall

Henry Flagler set new standards for luxury travel in the Gilded Age with his railroad and hotels. His legacy of grandeur lives on today in his 1902 Palm Beach mansion, which serves as the home of the Flagler Museum. Kamerer will reflect upon the importance of this National Historic Landmark in the context of the Gilded Age, its rescue from demolition, and the preservation occurring today.

Wednesday, November 14, 2018 Richard René Silvin Mar-a-Lago: From Post to Trump

What do Marjorie Merriweather Post, Birds Eye Frozen Food, actress Dina Merrill, the Hutton family, and President Trump have in common? All of them have a direct connection to the magnificent Mar-a-Lago mansion in Palm Beach, whose property stretches from the Atlantic Ocean (Mar) to Lake Worth (Lago). Since its current owner, Donald Trump, became the forty-fifth president of the United States, Mar-aLago has become an international household name. Silvin will explore the history of Palm Beach’s current Winter White House.

Wednesday, January 9, 2019 Stephen Perkins and James F. Caughman Addison Mizner: The Architect Whose Genius Defined Palm Beach

Addison Mizner (1872-1933), recognized as one of America’s iconic society architects, created splendid residences in Palm Beach in the 1920s for such families as Duke, Biddle, Vanderbilt, Phipps, and Wanamaker. Mizner really began his career in architecture at the age of thirty-eight, but he spent most of his early adult life living by his wits and was variously recognized as a humorist, bon vivant, bohemian, prospector, painter, writer, and prize fighter. Perkins and Caughman will complement the current special exhibit of the Johnson History Museum with their presentation of Mizner’s colorful life.

Wednesday, February 13, 2019 John Capouya Florida Soul: From Ray Charles to KC and the Sunshine Band

When people think about the origins of soul music, they may consider Detroit (home to Motown), Memphis (home to Stax Records and Otis Redding), or New Orleans (which has a rich rhythm and blues history). Florida also has a rich heritage of soul music that has been overlooked, which includes Sam and Dave, Ray Charles, KC and the Sunshine Band, and many other hit-making musicians of the 1960s and ‘70s. University of Tampa Professor John Capouya will play classic R&B, show vintage photos, and share his research into this important musical legacy.

Wednesday, March 13, 2019 Dr. Sandra Norman Material Culture: How Archaeologists and Historians Use Artifacts to Tell the Story of the Past

This lecture will look at the material culture of American life, how we identify objects, historically and archaeologically, and how they inform us about people and their lives. Today people take Facebook quizzes on 1950s kitchen implements, but how would you identify some from 1650 or interpret their use?

Since most people in the past did not leave a written record, this use of material objects is even more important. Dr. Sandra Norman, Associate Professor of History at FAU, teaches classes in Material Culture, Public History, History of Technology, History of Science, and Environmental History. She uses a lot of “stuff and things” in her classes.

Wednesday, April 10, 2019 James M. Denham Florida Founder William P. Duval: Frontier Bon Vivant

William P. DuVal (1784-1854) hailed originally from Virginia but matured on the Kentucky frontier before being appointed territorial governor of Florida in 1822. He founded Florida's territorial capital, Tallahassee, presided at the first meetings of the legislative council, and oversaw relations with the Seminoles.

DuVal was part frontiersman and part sophisticate, at home in the wilds of Kentucky, Florida, Texas, and Washington City. He delighted in telling tall tales, jests, and anecdotes that epitomized America’s expansive, democratic vistas, captivating among others Washington Irving and James Kirke Paulding, who used DuVal’s tall tales as inspiration for their fiction. Denham, Professor of History at Florida Southern College and Director of the Lawton M. Chiles Center for Florida History, will share DuVal’s life and times, and sign copies of his book during a reception following the lecture.

This special edition Cocktails in Paradise is held in conjunction with “Great Give Palm Beach & Martin Counties, a 24-hour online giving event led by United Way of Palm Beach County designed to raise as much money as possible for local nonprofits in a single day. This community-wide event celebrates the spirit of giving and the collective effort it takes to strengthen our community by raising critical funds for local nonprofits. Every local gift made during the 24-hour period will be multiplied by additional dollars from a bonus pool raised by United Way of Palm Beach County.”

The Young Friends of the Historical Society is a steering committee that plans and participates in a variety of special events throughout the year, including Cocktails in Paradise and Evening in Antique Row.

Family Programs Harvest Festival & Scarecrow Contest Saturday, October 27, 2018 When: 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm Where: Johnson History Museum, 300 North Dixie Highway, West Palm Beach Cost: $10 all-inclusive, except the Bake Sale. Children under age 3 are free.

Our fall festival is back for its ninth year! An afternoon of live music, arts and crafts, agricultural displays, and more kicks off the season at the Johnson History Museum. Join us for family fun and celebrate the history of agriculture in Palm Beach County on the front lawn of the 1916 Historic Courthouse. The Scarecrow Contest is open to everyone! Schools, art clubs, scout troops, families, and local businesses compete for cash prizes by building a life-size scarecrow depicting a historical Palm Beach County figure.

Book Launch My Darlings: A Memoir Tuesday, March 19 When: 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm Where: Johnson History Museum Cost: An invited reception for HSPBC Members and special guests Grace Mather-Smith (Author), Russell P. Kelley III (Editor) Published by Hamilton Books

My Darlings is a memoir of the rollicking life and times of Grace Mather-Smith, the grande dame of Oakland, Florida—from growing up in the frontier town of Denver, to studying voice in the big city of Chicago, to pioneering in the backwoods of central Florida.

Grace was born in 1884 in Denver and moved to Chicago around the turn of the century, to study voice in hopes of becoming an opera singer. Instead, she married the delightful Charles Frederic Mather-Smith, twenty years her senior, and the newlyweds made their winter home in rural Oakland, Florida, when central Florida was still a primeval jungle teeming with wild animals and exotic flora just beginning to be tamed by homesteading farmers, ranchers, and fishermen.

As Grace said, it was the hand of Destiny that led her new husband and her to Oakland, where Grace raised her family, shook up the community, and lived for more than fifty happy years.

As recounted in her memoir, Grace was a devoted wife and mother, a pioneer, a community organizer, an opera singer, a midwife, a businesswoman, a philanthropist—and a great beauty whom men found irresistible.

Grace was the first woman in Florida to drive a car, owner of the first telephone and phonograph in Oakland, owner of the first bathtub and flushing toilet in central Florida, and the first person to drive a car to the top of Pike’s Peak without a mechanic.

Grace’s voice comes across loud and clear in her memoir, which is illustrated with more than twenty family photos. She was flamboyant, theatrical, uninhibited, adventurous, energetic, glamorous, exuberant, unconventional, willful, irrepressible, big-hearted, and generous to a fault. Her memoir quotes family and friends who describe Grace as being “like a thoroughbred horse … always out there in the limelight,” “born for the concert stage and the opera,” and “prone to gallivantin’ around.” She was larger than life—a force of nature—and has been likened to Auntie Mame. As Eve Bacon wrote in her book Oakland: The Early Years, Grace “hit staid little Oakland” like “a social bombshell.”

Take a step back in time on our Historical Walking Tours! The HSPBC hosts Downtown West Palm Beach History Strolls led by architect and historian Rick Gonzalez of REG Architects. The 90-minute guided tour showcases the evolution of the city’s buildings and landmarks, including an overview of urban design through recent area development. The tours have been held each season since the development of CityPlace in West Palm Beach.

All proceeds benefit the Historical Society of Palm Beach County.

Volunteering is an enjoyable way to explore your interests and passions and provide mental stimulation that can transfer into your personal and professional life. Volunteer work has many benefits for you and those you serve:

• It can provide a warm environment to enrich your day-to-day routine.

In today’s world, our routines have become consumed by our daily schedules – the sheer thought of donating time can seem overwhelming. One of the best advantages of volunteering, however, is that YOU decide when and where to spend your helping time. Although volunteering is unpaid in financial terms, nothing about it is valueless. Many volunteering opportunities provide extensive training that help you build upon skills you already have, and teach you how to utilize those skills to benefit the greater community.

Regardless of one’s age or circumstance, there are opportunities to volunteer at the Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum, operated by the Historical Society of Palm Beach County. You can assist at special events, greet museum visitors, or help customers in the Museum Store. If you want to go “all in,” you can study to become a museum docent or help with research and the archival collection. In whatever capacity we agree on, you can make a powerful difference! People who volunteer say the experience creates a euphoric feeling inside, noticeably improving their health and well-being by giving of themselves to benefit others.

Our volunteers at the Historical Society of Palm Beach County are truly the best. Their diverse backgrounds in education, profession, experiences, skills, and residency make for quite an extraordinary team. Without their involvement, the HSPBC staff could not effectively further its mission.
