Grammy nominated singer and breakout actress LESLIE GRACE has garnered critical and fan attention with her impressive resume. Her 2013 debut self-titled album, Leslie Grace, earned her the first of four Latin Grammy nominations and numerous other accolades in the U.S. and Latin America. She was recently named one of Variety’s 10 Actors To Watch and was also featured as one of Hollywood Reporter’s Next Gen Talents in 2021.

Grace stars in and executive produce QCode’s “How to Win Friends and Disappear People,” a dark-comedy thriller podcast in which she voices the part of a young woman who is actually a centuries-old vampire living in modern-day New York City. The series ranked as the #1 scripted podcast on Apple within its first 24 hours of release in February.

Grace recently starred in her first feature film, the highly anticipated and critically acclaimed IN THE HEIGHTS. The film is based on Lin Manuel-Miranda’s Tony Award-winning musical, directed by CRAZY RICH AISANS’ Jon Chu. She brings the empowering Nina character to life, often drawing on her own experiences growing up with immigrant parents who encouraged her to dream big. She has a number of breathtaking ballads within the film. The film premiered in theaters and HBO Max in June 2021.

Next up, Grace is set to star in “The Thicket” alongside Juliette Lewis and Peter Dinklage. Directed by Elliot Lester, the western film is set to release in October 2023.

Most recently on the music front, Grace released her latest single “BACHATICA,” returning to her Dominican roots with her signature R&B-infused Spanish-language bachata. Prior, Grace, alongside Meek Mill and Boi-1da, recorded a re-make of the Latin classic “CONGA” as her latest single under Sony Music on January 22nd. Grace took over on lead vocals and wrote all new verses on the track and brought it into the modern-day Miami-sound that has become a phenomenon in the US during the past few years.

A true force to be reckoned with in the music space, Grace reached #1 on Billboard’s Latin Radio Airplay chart in 2013, making her the youngest female Latin artist to achieve this milestone, with her self-titled album’s lead track, a cover of Carole King’s “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow.” She’s worked with some of the biggest names in the music industry including Diane Warren, hit collaborations with superstar artists including Maluma, Balvin, Becky G, Fat Joe, etc. and has played sold out concerts throughout the U.S., Latin America and Europe. She performed and presented at this year’s Latin Grammys as well.

Grace was born in The Bronx to Dominican parents, and currently resides in Los Angeles, CA.

PBS and our member stations are pleased to join the Hispanic Heritage Foundation in celebrating this year’s Heritage Award honorees. We are excited to share this event with audiences nationwide on PBS.

The Hispanic Heritage Awards are a cornerstone of our celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month on PBS. This fall, we will also honor Hispanic heritage and culture with a wide array of programming, including POV’s “Bulls and Saints,” a love story about reverse migration, rebellion, and redemption, INDEPENDENT LENS’ “Sansón and Me,” from VOCES and filmmaker Rodrigo Reyes, and AMERICAN MASTERS’ “A Song for Cesar,” exploring how music and the arts were instrumental to the farmworkers’ social movement. We'll also premiere a new three-part series BECOMING FRIDA KAHLO, and share new episodes of ROSIE’S RULES and ALMA’S WAY from PBS KIDS. As always, please check your local listings and visit PBS.org to see our full list of programs and performance specials highlighting Hispanic Americans.

For over 50 years, PBS has celebrated the rich diversity of our nation. Building on our longstanding commitment to diverse stories and storytellers, we look forward to sharing the Hispanic Heritage Awards with our viewers across our platforms and in every community.

Congratulations to the honorees!

The accomplishments of Hispanic Americans through the years remind all of us that in America we are blessed with the freedom to live, work, and worship in peace and to build a better life for ourselves and our children.

OMAR APOLLO

2023 Inspira Award Honoree

2023 Grammy®-nominated Best New Artist Omar Apollo is one of music’s most exciting shape-shifters. In just a few years’ time, the Indiana-raised Mexican-American singer-songwriter went from teenage strummer to one of the most hotly-tipped rising stars of his generation.

Apollo has had a transformative but linear journey, from listening to Brandy and Stevie Wonder as a kid, to plucking away at a guitar at as a pre-teen, to a major label record deal and the release of his critically acclaimed debut album IVORY in the spring of ’22 on the heels of his 2 Latin GRAMMY nominations for his collaboration “Te Olvidaste” with C Tangana.

IVORY catapulted him to another level in his career and earning him critical acclaim from the likes of the Los Angeles Times and Rolling Stone and more. The album also features his 2022 RIAA Certified Platinum breakout hit “Evergreen” which had a massive lift on TikTok earning him VARIETY’s TikTok Icon of The Year Award and garnering television performances of the song on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and Good Morning America.

Other Album singles such as “Invincible” featuring Daniel Caesar, “Killing Me”, “Go Away”, and “Tamagotchi (Prod. by Pharrell and Chad Hugo)” cross genre lines as well as language barriers. He went on to perform those and more on his sold out The Prototype Tour in ’22 and will continue his riveting live show trajectory on SZA’s SOS Tour in ’23. Despite all that he has accomplished, Omar feels like he’s just getting started. The artist who once called himself “just a kid from Indiana” is breaking new ground, abandoning all comfort zones, and never looking back.

MIGUEL, VERONICA, & AIDA GARZA

After being diagnosed with multiple autoimmune disorders as a teenager, Veronica Garza, Co-Founder, President, and Chief Innovation Officer of Siete Family Foods, adopted a low inflammation diet to combat the often-debilitating symptoms. Her entire family of seven supported and joined her on this health journey, but as a tight-knit family from Laredo, Texas, following a grain free diet meant that they could no longer enjoy cultural favorites like corn and flour tortillas. To solve this problem, Veronica created grain free versions of traditional Mexican-American food staples, including a tortilla made with almond flour that eventually became the first product

offering by Siete Family Foods in 2014. As of today, she has led the creation of more than 80 product SKUs and continues to drive innovation for the company.

As the Co-Founder and CEO of Siete Family Foods, Miguel Garza is on a mission to build the leading, “better-for-you” Mexican-American food brand. Strong family values permeate the company culture, and Miguel upholds the shared belief in “Family first, family second, business third.” Miguel is also focused on the core value of “Juntos Es Mejor” – better together. To support the broader community, Siete launched the Juntos Fund, an annual opportunity to bolster Latino-owned businesses through financial awards.

As mother to the five Garza siblings, Aida Garza, Co-Founder and Director of Purchasing of Siete Family Foods, is the heart of the Garza and Siete family. Aida’s love and support has been fundamental and unconditional to the business. Today, Aida leads the Siete Family Foods Foundation, with a focus on education, entrepreneurship, and wellness. Through the foundation, Siete has supported organizations such as RAICES, Con Mi Madre, and Todos Juntos.

Siete Family Foods has expanded exponentially and is now the fastest growing Mexican-American brand in food or beverage. Today the thriving business spans more than 20,000 grocery stores nationally and Siete products are also available online at sietefoods.com.
