Stealth Investigations Consultants, Inc.

Lying, cheating, and stealing. It turns out “Creative Accounting” is just another term for white collar crime. Billions of dollars are lost every year to theft and embezzlement. The vast majority of these crimes come from within the company itself. It’s not a victimless crime. A single scam can destroy a company, devastate families and completely wipeout investors. Today’s white collar crimes are more sophisticated than ever and it takes a trained professional to track down the culprits and stop scams before they begin.

When you have the need to know, remember, Stealth Investigations Consultants, Inc., is dedicated to making sure our clients know what they need to know.

A Note From The Editor

Evolution [ev-uh-loo-shuhn] any process of formation or growth; development. We live in a constantly evolving society where things change and happen on a daily basis. We are bombarded with these instances and must evolve with the times to ensure our survival. Business plans have changed due to our current economy. Gone are the days of excessive spending, and credit limits which seemed to have no end. The housing market has come to a virtual halt and developers are looking at new ways to maintain a hold on the community while still evolving with the times. American institutions are dissolving before our eyes, while new growth comes in and replaces these dinosaurs of the past. We evolve in order to maintain some semblance of a lifestyle which became the norm during a period of inflation and pure opulence. With evolution comes optimism. A renewed sense of hope takes hold of a community and forces individuals to standup and find a purpose in something which may have previously been overlooked. These tough decisions make individuals act with strength and determination. Hope takes

hold and we are able to find solutions in the most unpredictable places. As a society we find value in things which previously were insignificant, and take solace in their simplistic charm. The simple pleasures, big dreams and an overwhelming feeling of pride begins to emerge in the wake of an uncertain future. In this issue we explore the concept of evolution and turn our eye to the historic downtown center of Fresno. We examine the growth, hope and renewed prosperity which is emerging in the wake of one of the most devastating recessions our country has ever seen. The full story can be read on page 44. So take some time and realize that even in this period of what some may consider a rather dysfunctional time in our history, that we are all servants to our own voice, calling and destiny. David J. Bigger and Better By: Nick Papagni

It’s a Saturday and size still matters. Dad’s out on the golf course swinging an extra-long driver with a head the size of a cantaloupe. Mom’s on her way to Costco driving a big sport-utility vehicle. The kids are home watching the big 46” HD TV, while the 150lb Rottweiler is out in the backyard chewing up the sprinkler system.

Everything is getting bigger and bigger, including our athletes. My father Angelo A. Papagni was one of the biggest players on the Edison Tiger football team back in 1946 weighing in at a whopping 155lbs. He played center. High school players today are bigger faster and stronger then ever before. There are more 300lb high school players than there were playing in the NFL back in 1950. But when did bigger, get so much bigger, than bigger used to be? Twenty years ago, just about all of the 300-pounders at NFL games were up in the stands, yelling for more beer. Ten years ago, only 27 players in the league weighed 300lbs or more. Today, nearly 275 players top that 300lb mark. There are some 50 starting offensive linemen listed at 330lb plus. From 1920 to 1940 the big NFL lineman averaged 227lbs. In the 40’s and 50’s the big guys upfront averaged 245lbs. Strength training was actually discouraged in those days. They thought weight lifting was bad for you, that it would ruin your athleticism. The 60’s and 70’s it was at 259lbs. In the 80’s the average weight reached up to 272lbs. The 90’s we started seeing the 300lb players slowly start showing up. Is it sheer genetics which is creating all these bigger players? Weight training, protein, technology and yes even steroids are getting players bigger and stronger. For football in the Central Valley before the ninth grade, leagues had weight limits. This meant big kids couldn’t play football. Leagues make you try to make weight to play but then in the 9th grade they want you big and fast because the weight limit is over. Does that make sense? Some leagues like Bullard, Sanger, Central, and Madera did away with weight limits in the middle schools. The big kids can

play. Over at Bullard, Head Coach Donnie Arax even got rid of the weight limits for the youth league. Arax says, “Why can’t we give all kids the opportunity to play? I see a great athletic kid who weighs more and can’t play. That’s the kid that I want playing in our youth league. I get kids from Clovis because they have a weight limit and the big kids can’t play. That is always the big question, should we let them play? We don’t want to help our competitors but I don’t want to penalize the kid who wants to play football. The good news is some kids stay and play in the Bullard program.” Thirty years ago you might have had less than one percent of freshman and sophomores in the entire valley playing varsity sports. With lifting and camps, kids are developing earlier and now you see more and more younger kids playing varsity. Kids of course grow at all different levels. Studying the Bullard youth league with no weight limit, it has worked out with very few injuries. Central and Madera’s youth leagues have the ‘X’ factor and that means there is no weight limit but the bigger kids can’t carry the football. To me that is like saying in Babe Ruth baseball, a big kid who throws too hard can’t pitch. We want the little guys to have a chance. Clovis is one of the few leagues left in youth and middle school that still has a weight limit. I guarantee that if in high school the CUSD stops dominating, you might look back at the other youth level leagues advancing and the CUSD lagging. Right now CUSD is still at the top of their game. Will CUSD ever go away from the weight limit? As long as the big kids can play at Bullard, I don’t see any changes coming.

were no nutritional experts. Angelo had my grandmother cooking Italian food. You practice at 3 p.m. and come home and eat spaghetti.

There are more 300lb high school players than there were playing in the NFL back in 1950. I always say high school football is now like college football without the full ride. We have the big guys protecting the fast and quick guys. The study done in the NFL with retired 300lb plus players is not good. They stop working out and most gain a ton of weight. Then there are heart issues and subsequent issues. Part of it just happens over time. I’m bigger than my dad was. Our society, specifically public health and nutrition, has improved. As a result, children are becoming bigger. The boys from 1960 were about five inches taller and 33lbs heavier than their 19th-century counterparts. What is it going to be like in the 22nd century? 400lb lineman? Players running 3.8 seconds in the 40 yard dash? Quarter backs throwing the football 100 yards in the air? Basketball plays at 8ft tall? Baseball players throwing 125MPH? Is there a limit to the human body? If anybody is around then to see it, let us all know.

Is it good for athletes to keep getting bigger, faster and stronger even when they are young? I guarantee my father never had a 6 a.m. weight training. There

GUY haberman Interviews Chris Herren

After a long road to sobriety former Fresno State Basketball star Chris Herren released a book earlier this year. Basketball Junkie is written with Bill Reynolds, who wrote Fall River Dreams about Herren when he was in high school. Chris recently joined The Guy Haberman Show to discuss his journey. Guy Haberman: Lets go back 20 years to the first book about you, Fall River Dreams, what do you remember about that experience? Chris Herren: Well I remember it was, at times, a stressful process. I didn’t know Bill Reynolds (the author) and I had dealt with media and I wasn’t sure how I was going to be portrayed. When you’re (a teenager) you say some pretty dumb things and to have that in print can be difficult. But, that being said, I thank God everyday that he showed up at Durfee High School because the relationship is priceless. GH: So eventually you came to Fresno State with a lot of fan-fare. There was a lot of hype that surrounded those teams that you were a part of… CH: I look at life a little different today and I cherish certain times and moments that affected me. I went through a lot of ups and downs at Fresno and the people of Fresno could have turned their back on me countless times. What I remember is how loyal, and caring, and forgiving to me they were. GH: One thing people remember on the court in Fresno was that, because of everything that was out there about you, you got (rough treatment) on the road. Was there any part of you that was enjoying those moments? CH: You enjoy it when you are doing well. But it’s tough when they are riding you and things aren’t going your way. Looking

back on it now, when you have 12,000 people chanting ‘cocaine’ or chanting ‘heroin’ it’s traumatic in a lot of ways. GH: Jonathan Hock is a filmmaker who has been doing some work on a documentary on you that will come out later this year. I saw a quote where he said that your name became synonymous with a mythical figure. Did you feel that? CH: The hardest thing about my Fresno experience is that I was living a double life. I was one guy on the court, but off the court I was a different person. I wasn’t that guy that was gung-ho athletically. I was spending a lot of time in clubs and the nightlife. Both lifestyles were extremely chaotic. From a basketball standpoint, that mythical figure, I was that kid, I lived that. And then, when I walked away from that I became a different character that was partying ‘til all hours of the morning.

“Honestly, and I say this everywhere I go; the affiliation that I feel is Fresno State Bulldogs. That’s who I am, that’s who I will always be.”

GH: Fast forward to June of 2008, you’re unconscious, slumped over the steeringwheel of a car. For many people it felt like an ending point, but for you it became a beginning. How did that happen? CH: It was a start of a life in recovery. I was found in my vehicle with heroin and hypodermic needles and someone called 911 and saved my life. I was arrested and put in the hospital and I was fortunate enough to find my way to a recovery center… a guy walked up to me and said “I want you to do the most courageous, admirable thing you’ve ever done in your continues >>

life. Write your wife a letter and tell her that you no longer exist and walk away from your kids because you are the only negative thing around them.” I went to bed that night in that recovery center, staring at the ceiling, thinking that might be the right move. By the grace of God I woke up the next morning and from that day forward I’ve decided to fight and to live and to be a father and husband, and live a sober life. GH: How much time have you spent thinking about the role of basketball; in some ways it brought you gifts, in other ways it was a curse. CH: Absolutely, that’s why I started the company Hoop Dream. I work with kids getting ready for the NBA draft and I work with sixth-grade girls. You don’t have to be good but I make sure I emphasize smiling, being happy, enjoying it; not putting all the pressures that basketball can bring on a kid. Basketball brought me so many joys, but it also brought me a lot of pain (that) was self-inflicted. GH: If there’s someone out there that has an addiction with alcohol or drugs, what’s your message to them? CH: To give up. To surrender. It’s not worth fighting. It’s not worth being alone. That there are people out there that are willing to help. I would first tell them to pray, number one. And, number two, to forgive themselves. Because without that there is no healing, there is no hope. I am no doubt spiritual in this journey and pray everyday to stay away. But I’m also at a point in my life where I can’t always feel guilty, that’s what can lead me to relapsing. GH: Has there been a point for you when it “gets easy?” CH: It is easy my man. How can it not be? I struggled every day sticking a needle in my arm. I don’t struggle anymore, life is good, there is no struggle. The struggle

20 20

2011 MARCH JULY/AUGUST / APRIL2011

was shooting up on a daily basis, that was the struggle. Shoving vodka down my throat at 9:00 a.m., that was a struggle. Waking up sober, putting my kids on the bus, getting them to school and putting them to bed at night, there is no struggle in that. GH: Can any of your kids beat you in HORSE yet? CH: (laughs) Not a chance, not a chance. I still am close to basketball so every once in a while I have to let these young kids know, who never saw me play, that there is still a bit of a beast in me. GH: I know it was a big deal for you to become a (Boston) Celtic, how close to that organization are you? CH: Honestly, and I say this everywhere I go; the affiliation that I feel is Fresno State Bulldogs. That’s who I am, that’s who I will always be, and that’s when I was in the moment. The Red Wave and all those crowds, they molded me into being part of Fresno. Celtics was a quick hit; I’m still close with some of the front office people and players. My son and daughter are fortunate enough to go to practices and games and locker rooms, which is huge for them. What that did was it allowed me to reflect back and see what I had achieved when I saw it through their eyes. I realized I can be proud that I made the NBA, when I was using drugs I was ashamed of the NBA. But, getting back to it, Bulldog Born, Bulldog Bred you know what I mean… Listen to the complete interview at 1430espn.com

A Barbaric Turn By: Paul Swearengin

Buster Posey is a Fresnan. Now, Buster’s Wikipedia page says he attended high school in someplace named Leesburg, GA, but I have a rule; spend some time in Fresno, do something significant in Fresno and you, my friend, are forever a Fresnan.

I mean Tim Lincecum was in Fresno for about two weeks and, in my book, even he can say (to paraphrase John Kennedy) “Ich bein ein FRESNAN”. (I apologize to all sports fans for whom that joke is too obscure). But I digress. Buster Posey, in my mind, is a Fresnan, that is, in part why I was mortified to see Buster’s ankle roll up under him in a collision at home plate, cracking a bone and stretching his knee ligaments beyond the stress God intended them to take. Our boy was rolled at home plate and he was lost for the rest of the San Francisco Giants season. Something was affirmed deep inside of me after seeing this - I really don’t like the violence of sports. I know it’s out of character for a sports guy. Isn’t the stereotype of the raw meat-loving, bloodthirsty sports fan still intact? It is, I presume - particularly from the many callers to my radio show on 1430 ESPN who told me the home plate crash is “part of the game” and “as American as apple pie”! I also face the danger of being called a “wimp” or some other derogatory term for actually feeling compassion for athletes that get laid out and are groping in pain. Whether it’s football, boxing, MMA or tidily winks - I find myself these days way more intrigued by the skill with which athletes perform their feats than by the brute force with which they might do them. Now don’t get me wrong, in any athletic endeavor, there will be injuries. Anytime a person takes their body to the edge of it’s strength, stamina and mental capacity, there will be times when the body just can’t take it. We can’t eliminate all injuries without changing the very essence of the sports we enjoy. Heck, we can’t eliminate life injuries without getting rid of the car - and I’m keeping my Infinity! But there are moments in which athletes get hurt that are in the game only for “the tradition” and to please the anti-PC gang, that simply aren’t worth the torture it places on the athletes involved. For example, in the old days of football

22

“It’s the beauty of the game that really makes us stare in awe.” days. In the end, we want to see Steve Young walking happy and healthy after his playing days. Not see our favorites barely able to move, or worse, barely able to function. So root your favorite players to push themselves to the limit, that’s what they get paid to do and the sacrifices they make for their fame and fortune. But if we have a chance to help them play longer and more healthy with more change for long term safety - without making a seed change to the game, why is it even a question? Ask for less barbaric rules in sports, your manhood will survive intact, I promise - and so will our favorite sports.

a defensive lineman, who was completely blocked and unable to get to the quarterback, would simply reach a big paw over the blocker and slap the quarterback on the top or side of the head. In 1977, the NFL passed “the Deacon Jones Rule”, outlawing the “head slap”.

A D V E R T I S E M E N T

“Put a skirt on the quarterback why don’t ya,” the purists cried. “Next thing you know we’ll be playing flag football,” another agonized. Strangely, for the next 33 seasons, the NFL has had a meteoric rise in popularity - even as each season the league has passed more and more rules to make the game of football less barbaric. “Well, ask the athletes, they want these parts of the game left in there...” says one die hard carnivore, as if the players will be the ultimate judge of what is right and wrong. “You’ve never played the game” says another. Well, I have played the game, certainly not at a high level, however, I also have never jumped from a moving train or rode inside a cement mixer but I still have a pretty good idea what is healthy and what is not in regards to those activities. In fact, players would be the worst to ask - because what strong, young athlete is going to want to be the one to say “Yeah, I want to avoid all contact because I’m scared of being hurt.” None would say that. In fact their complete lack of fear of these things is part of their greatness, that’s why they need outside governance to protect them from themselves. The fact is, no person has ever gone to a baseball game saying “Wow, if I don’t see a collision at the plate, the evening will just not be complete. We go to baseball to see precise pitching and the miraculous skill of hitting a round ball with a round bat. Oh, no doubt we love hustle and grit and getting dirty - but it’s the beauty of the game that really makes us stare in awe. I believe this fact is part of the meteoric growth of the MMA, while boxing is a sinking ship. There is amazing pain and often gore in MMA, however, a fighter is allowed to quit without great embarrassment, to be able to fight another day - while a boxer must keep coming forward and keep getting punched in the head until he can’t string two sentences together after his fight

HIS eats Richard’s (559) 266-4077

1609 East Belmont Avenue, Fresno, CA

Richard Stockle opened Richard’s Prime Rib & Seafood on Belmont in downtown Fresno during the summer of 1969, and has become known as a Fresno hotspot.

On July 1, 2005, 36 years to the day after he opened Richard’s, Richard decided to sell the restaurant, only to regain it a few years later after it closed. The place was in a shambles. There were holes in the walls, the bar was on the ground, and an air conditioning unit was taken off the roof. Richard’s required a full remodeling, and the bar moved from the west side to the east side. The Stockle family restored the restaurant to a condition better than when Richard bought it in 1969. Soft lighting and tasteful artwork decorate the establishment. There are many popular menu items like ‘The Something Good’, a New York steak wrapped in a flour tortilla with melted cheese. Another favorite is ‘The Something Special’, an openfaced New York steak sandwich. Also popular is ‘The Beef Eater’, which is deli-thin, sliced prime rib served as a French dip. Richard’s is a true family-run restaurant and even though it has undergone numerous changes over the years some things remain constant: great food, a wonderful atmosphere and a staff that welcomes its guests as if they were family.

Life Changes: time to buy a new grill By: Brent Walton

I know it happens every decade or two, I’m faced with a monumental decision, what type of grill do I want? How about gas? It is faster and easier than charcoal. Great for throwing on a couple steaks but always seems to lack the flavor of charcoal or wood. I probably could learn to cook on it in no time. I really just need to practice with it and try some different things. My last grill was charcoal and I put wood chunks in it when I cooked with it. I always used a chimney for a charcoal starter. It did take a little time but then again barbeque is

relaxing to me so the process of gathering and prepping everything was as important as the cooking itself. I have cooked so many things successfully and some not so successful. I have so many great memories with this grill. I developed a lot of secret recipes using this old grill, my neighbors were forced to try all kinds of things conjured up in my developmental stages of barbequing. I’ve completely rebuilt my grill twice. Many of my important life decisions were made around this grill. People that are no longer alive, friends and family hung around it. Good times and a million laughs and even a few tears were shed around this old thing. My old grill really is a mess and it’s an eyesore, it hardly can carry its own weight it is so rusted. For someone who prides himself so much on his barbeque skills and prowess I guess I should at least have a better showing when it comes to my home grilling unit. You would think I had a real “TROPHY” unit at home but alas more like old faithful. It is time to put the old grill down but none the less I’m having reservations; kind of like putting down the family dog. I’ve checked all the stores and internet to find a grill or cooker I could really like but nothing seems to catch my eye, I have even cooked on a few of my friend’s grills, but nothing. I’m sure they all perform great and some can do some

special things real well. Nothing is giving me a spark yet. No pun intended. This reminds me of someone losing a girlfriend that really stole their heart. Nothing seems right about the new ones, even though you knew all the flaws in the old one. None of the new models could even measure up to it. I feel like I’m in mourning still. This is pathetic, It is just a grill for crying out loud. I know, get over it. Yes, when I think back, it is amazing how much that old grill was a part of my life. I can hardly stand the idea of casting it aside for a new svelt stainless steel gas fired 8 burner behemoth turbocharged radiant heat Grillmaster 2000Mellinium model with infared rotiserrie, lights, CD player and cup holders and few other extras I don’t need. It is a nice model… on second thought I think I could get used to it.

HIS music By: Hammer at New Rock 104

2011 has turned into an interesting year in music, not only did some bands actually believe the Rapture was happening, with the Foo Fighters, Rise Against, Cage the Elephant, the Beasties Boys, and others all putting out new music before we even hit the summertime, but new sounds have been developing and getting people’s attention all at the same time. And maybe not so much new sounds, but did anyone really think the biggest rock band of the year so far would be an English folk rock band singing about a ‘Little Lion Man’? Which by the way, if you are still without the Mumford and Sons CD/download, your music collection is naked… I mean it, naked.

It’s been interesting to watch the evolution in music this year, which seems to have started late last year. Things evolving and becoming more accepted when in the past they wouldn’t have been. Mumford and Sons is the perfect example, something about this band, their music, their songs, has resonated with the public, whatever it is, it has. You can also add Arcade Fire, Florence and the Machine, Adele and many others who are getting a break, as many of the afore mentioned bands maybe wouldn’t have had a shot to be exposed in year’s past. Music is an art form that is always evolving and trying to move forward. It is an art form where fans may feel slighted at times, when their favorite artist tries to evolve. We’ve all been there when our favorite artist tries something new, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, but even when my favorite band has let me down, it’s at least to be commended when they try and move forward.

a favorite 80’s song or artists, but it was time for a change. Grunge exploded onto the scene, along with many other musical genres. Bands started to use rap style vocals over loud guitars, and other things that maybe couldn’t have been tried before. These musical styles became overblown as well, and then came more new sounds, and it keeps repeating. It’s been going on as long as I can remember, from Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Queen, Nirvana, New Order, the Cure; bands and musicians who hear something in their heads and are able to express it at times coming up with something completely new and fresh. It’s exciting to hear where music is going, or to

When music evolution occurs, most times it is in reaction to something; the current political climate, the system, or a current music trend that’s been overblown or overplayed. The 90’s were a great example of this. The 80’s had become overblown, and just downright lame, especially when it came to music, now we all have continues >>

hear certain bands evolve and try new things or to see that new band who has just done something unique and creative. Being around music all my life, it is fun to watch bands and artists and music in general constantly moving forward. Let’s not down sell the digital age, music is so much more accessable now. With smart phones, you can use applications to get song titles, artist’s names, just by holding your phone up to a speaker. Technology has helped the art form of music and in turn has allowed us to move music forward. Constant movement is always a positive thing; you never know what can happen. So whether it’s your favorite band or artists, or someone that you ‘Shazamed’ with your iPhone that got you turned on to a new sound or artist, continue to discover, and music will continue to move forward. As mentioned, this year has been phemominal for new bands, and acts we love who continue to do exciting and new things, I for one; being in the business, I’m in love and can’t wait to see what comes next. HIS fitness A Lifetime of a Healthy Lifestyle By: Walt Gonzales, B.S. Kinesiology, Owner of Synergy Personal Training

“Pay me now or pay me later”, ultimately at some point in time you will pay for your health and wellness. So I ask you this question now: what motivates you? For some it’s personal image and others it’s the hope for a healthier tomorrow. Some people get started early in life, but sadly most wait until they are already battling health issues and must seek sick care. “Sick Care” is when you go to the doctor because something is wrong. So if sick care is help sought in the presence of illness then health care is the pursuit of wellness throughout life, illness present or not. The motivation to eat right and exercise regularly has to come from within yourself to want a healthy lifestyle. Let’s face it, some times we allow our desire for comfort to overcome our need for progress. We’ve all been there where we’ve had that decision to make and we let our power to choose dictate very easily whether we go or not. What if going to the gym and eating healthy was our job? Would we dismiss it as easily as we do? In a perfect world we wouldn’t, and that’s the perspective that we must take in order to hold ourselves accountable to doing what’s right in regard to our health. Accountability is a key component in reaching and maintaining your health and fitness goals. Now that you’re motivated to make a change, what can you do to insure the success of your efforts? Write it Down! Use a journal to record your goals, commitments and successes. Having it written down gives you something physical that you can see and refer to, to monitor your progress. Voice it! Tell your friends and family about your goals and share with them why it is so important that they support you. Having loved ones supporting your efforts is one of the best means for a successful journey. Post your progress on social media sites like Facebook. The more people you share your commitment with the more people will hold you accountable to following through with your word.

Expect Results! If you’re not succeeding then you need to invest in guidance, knowledge and/or professional help. Without the education and a game plan you may very easily set yourself up for failure. As the cliché states, “people don’t plan to fail. They fail to plan”.

“People don’t plan to fail. They fail to plan.” Making healthy decisions and choices is your responsibility. The consequences are yours to live with. So I ask you again, what is your quality of health worth to you? How do you want to spend the next five years of life and what choices will you make now to ensure that you prolong vitality, energy and well being for your lifetime? The choice is yours the answers are here. Get Up, Get Out and Get Active! Tips to a Sexy Summer Body By Aaron Thornton, B.S. Kinesiology/ Exercise Science NASM Certified Personal Trainer

It’s summer time and either you’ve realized that you’ve packed on some winter weight or you want to keep that beach body that you’ve worked so hard on all winter long. Either way, the trainers at Synergy Personal Training have some simple steps that will help you avoid packing on excess fat during your next summer party.

1. Eat a High Protein, No-Carb Breakfast-High

protein breakfasts are beneficial for a number of reasons. Namely, in this case, is that it helps to stabilize blood sugar, and improve insulin sensitivity. When the body is sensitive to insulin, it will store less fat. Additionally, high protein breakfasts boost your metabolism, and help to regulate hunger for the whole day. This means you will burn more calories, and be less likely to overconsume junk food and booze.

2. Workout with Weights–Weight training is

known for its ability to increase metabolism, not just

32 32

2011 MARCH JULY/AUGUST / APRIL2011

during the workout, but after the workout as well. A good resistance training workout can increase your metabolism for up to 48 hours following training. It puts the body into recovery-mode, where more calories and nutrients are shuttled to the muscle for repairs. Don’t have time for the gym? Try knocking out a quickie at home before heading out. Pushups, pull-ups and squats are easy exercises that you can crank out at home before hitting the scene. Not only does it bump up your metabolism but it gives you a good pump while you’re out.

3. Eat Your Protein First-Skip the sugar filled fruit or

starchy chips until after you’ve had some meat protein. In addition to the reasons mentioned for the high protein breakfast, eating your meat based meals first will also help to fill you up. It is very difficult to overconsume calories from protein because it is so satisfying to the body. By eating meat first, you will simply eat fewer calories from starches and sugars later.

“Keep it sexy all summer long.” So here’s the way the Synergy Personal Trainers keep it sexy all summer long. Get in a strength training workout first and as often as three to four days per week, second; load up on a protein rich meal right before heading out and always first thing in the morning. Lastly, keep in mind that beer, mixed drinks and wine are basically pure sugar. Sugar is the enemy of any fat loss effort. If you haven’t had any for a few days, and you’ve followed steps one through three, then you should be fine to have a couple drinks the next time you’re getting together with your friends for some summer shenanigans. Baby Got Back By: Dina Juve RKC Certified Russian Kettlebell Instructor Fort Washington Fitness

I think we may have taken SIR MIX-A-LOT’S 1992 hit way too literally. Just look around Fresno and you will see a lot of “junk in the trunk”. Guys beware… the big booty club is coed As we evolve we are becoming bigger and bigger. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in 1985 less than 10% of California residents were obese. In 2009 the statics were 20-24% of California residents were obese, and they reported more than 29% of adults got no physical activity other than at their regular job. Currently, two in every three Americans is considered overweight, while one out of three people in America are suffering from obesity. Obesity has several other health consequences. Various health conditions like cardiovascular disease, certain types of cancer, and type 2 diabetes are more common in obesity. With the growing millions of obese people, obesity is considered one of the most serious public health problems of the 21st century. We are over-consuming unhealthy food, fast food and carbonated beverages. Even if you have given up the obvious unhealthy options now our food is filled with cheap fillers, preservations and artificial sweeteners. Going back to the basics, eating items that have been grown or killed like our ancestors ate, is truly the way to go in my opinion. There is good news though. Fitness has come a long way from the days of Richard Simmons bouncing around in short shorts although, lately I have seen more of you guys trying to rock the short shorts (please note, this is not a good look EVER). Today we have so many fitness options to be healthy, strong and fit. We have gyms on almost every corner in Fresno. Larger gyms like Fort Washington Fitness, Bally Total Fitness, Gold’s and GB3. Then there are smaller gyms focusing on private training or specialty services. Fresno is trying to catch up with most of the main stream workouts and you can find such as Kettlebells, Ropes, TRX, Cross Fit, MMA, Pilates and more.

“Two in every three Americans is considered overweight .” Below are some exercises to help you tighten up your backside. Please check with your doctor before starting any exercise program. Hiring a Certified Personal Trainer will help you safely get the fastest results. Do the exercises below at your own risk.

Squats are done by holding a barbell across your shoulders or with weights or Kettlebells by your side and literally squatting down as far as you can without allowing your posterior to go lower than your knees (think sitting in a chair). Lunges are great for shaping the butt. Lunges are performed by placing one foot forward while you bend at the knee with the other. To make the lunges do more and produce better results for the butt muscles, do them either with a barbell across your shoulders or by holding dumbbells or Kettlebells by your sides. Then come back up and repeat. Deadlifts are excellent strengtheners for the lower back and buttocks. Place a barbell, dumbbells or Kettlebells on the floor in front of you and with your feet about shoulder-distance apart, bending your knees and keeping your chest open, your back flat, and your gaze forward, lower down and pick up the barbell with both hands shoulder-distance apart. Push up through the soles of your feet and come up to standing. Box jumps are a dynamic exercise that complement the squat, lunges and deadlifts. Place a sturdy box or a weightlifting bench about 15 to 20 inches tall in front of you. Squat down about halfway and explode up, bending the knees and jumping up onto the box. Both feet should leave the ground and land on the box together. Land with both feet flat on the box and then stand up straight, hips completely open. Jump back down to your starting position with both feet landing at the same time and landing with bent knees. Patrick James: A West Coast Classic An Interview with Patrick M. Mon Pere Jr. By: David J. Manning

The economy is dictating today’s marketplace. Companies and institutions are being forced to evolve to cater to the changing demographic. As a result there are new emerging trends that can be spotted by those who take the reigns and control their own destiny. One such example of this can be seen in the established brand, Patrick James. Over the past 49 years Patrick James has identified themselves as the experts in men’s furnishings and gentleman’s apparel. Over the past decade the brand has slowly redefined their identity as more than just a shop for suits and ties but as a lifestyle store. This west coast classic is entering their 50th year of service. But how will the brand continue to evolve and how has fashion changed the buying for this retailer? I sat down with Patrick M. Mon Pere Jr. to discuss these very questions. During our interview we covered everything from trends and changes to the evolution of the male silhouette and how buying for the retailer is dictated by the consumer. As the younger generation begins to flood the work force, Pat has noticed a tendency for a more casual relaxed look as opposed to years prior. The cut of clothing is also becoming trimmer, and fitted. Lapels are becoming narrower and jackets are being cut shorter. Another trend that seems to be constantly popping up is clothing with a utilitarian purpose. Nanotechnology has taken men’s fashion to a new level of utilitarian comfort. One of the leading companies on this forefront of fabric development is Nano-Tex. This company has developed a process to take cotton and silk fabrics and make them repel water and resist wrinkles. This breathable, dry clean attire is making a huge impact in the way men shop. The biggest trend which seems to have taken hold of the American society is denim. Patrick James has embraced this bringing in notable brands such as 7 For All Mankind and most recently the Citizen brand. Embracing these changes, Patrick James is proving that they can stand the test of time. This season there are several key trends which are being repeated. Gone are the days of pristine, bright vibrant colors. This summer we are seeing the emergence of sun-washed apparel. Lavender, red and orange are key colors which are being reflected in all fashion and cosmetic goods. The summer of 2011 is a about comfort, ease and a simplistic charm which goes against the over embellished Ed Hardy look from just a few years ago. Linen shirts that roll-up and button, Bermudas with plaid and sun-washed colors, even sandals are all trends which can be seen this season. White pants and linen chinos are being paired with stripped sports coats and classic tailored shirts. Pat thinks that everyman should own that perfect tailored blazer for this season. This one item can take even the most casual of ensembles and make it feel refined. The most important thing you should experience when making your next purchase is that of comfort and ease. The staff at Patrick James is there to make your next shopping excursion a memorable one. So why not use these tips for fashion this season, and be ready to welcome the heat and summer sun armed in your new wardrobe.

HIS finance Evolution of the Financial Mindset By: Monique Runge Here we are in summer 2011 and for the last four years, many of us have had to impose “Financial Reform” within our personal budgets. If you are a business owner, you are in continual “Financial Reform” mode. Personally I think it royally sucks that I can’t go on big vacations or buy any pair of shoes I want. However, one thing I know for sure is that with every challenge there comes a reward. It doesn’t look like it initially but at the end of the day, the financial adjustments that I have made do give me wonderful, simple pleasures that I enjoy each day without it costing me a penny. The downfall is our economy has forced many of us to evolve from our big lifestyles of the new millennium to a resetting of the bar for today’s economic mindset. You can hear me say this everywhere; it is all a mindset. If you think

positive, you get positive. Of course you can’t just think it but you must visualize it, map it out, and write it down, blog it. Create your journey, otherwise you will become a modern day slave to your job, life, marriage, credit, health, etc. We have been raised in a society that says we must go to school, get a good job, work at a stable company, and retire with a 401K or a pension. I ask you, why do you want to do the same job for 40+ years, only to end up being a slave to your finances? The majority of workers across the globe live life in this existence and are content. They are good people that do their best to be honest, loyal and responsible. The bar being set at this level is acceptable for them and that is just fine. But if

this modern day slavery is not who you want to be then it is up to you to get out there and raise the bar. I have had the pleasure of living in three different countries that spoke three different languages during my 20’s. I worked for mostly French and British companies. After experiencing the life of the French, British, Danish and Italians, I returned to California where opportunities are endless. Trust me when I say that there is no other country in the world that provides you with an endless opportunity to generate income, start your own business and make your own rules.

How do you escape the modern day slavery trap? Establish your Business idea or concept The first decision you will need to make is the type of business you will start. You will need to consider what, how and where you will operate your business. There are several types of businesses which you can operate as. Let’s review my Fab Five:

Self Employed & Independent Contractors You can be self-employed or operate as an independent contractor. You can provide similar services to multiple employers. At the end of the fiscal year, you will receive a 1099 from each employer in lieu of a W2. You will be responsible for paying your own state and federal income taxes quarterly. You must be a good budgeter to not get caught owing money to the state and the IRS at the end of each fiscal year.

An Internet Based Business

Nonprofit Organizations A nonprofit organization uses its profit to improve its services, rather

JULY/AUGUST 2011

Starting a Green Business Go green! This is the newest wave of technology and international trends. Solar, wind power, and the demand for consumer products that are not harmful to our environment are all currently big business. This is where technology meets marketing and there is a lot of money to be invested in this business sector for decades to come.

“Your ideas will grow and expand into living your dream.”

Building a business with an internet presence can enable you to sell, market, and advertise your business’s products and/or services to large audiences. Even if your business is not internet based, you should have a web presence. This is how the modern day society finds you and can learn about what services you offer. I can’t remember the last time I looked in a phone book for a business.

42

than pay dividends to investors. If your business is registered as a nonprofit, you are eligible for certain programs including grant funds from our generous government. There is a lot of opportunity here if you know your way around writing grants and sourcing federal or state earmarked funds, you could be funded with ease.

Home Based Business

More than 50% of businesses in America are home based. Your expenses are low which makes this very attractive for those even looking for a second source of income. What is most challenging is that you must be self disciplined and self motivated to get the work done; not everyone possesses this skill. This type of business can generate easy income for the entrepreneur that is truly organized.

Map out a business plan Hopefully you have already started to make notes of your thoughts someplace. This is where you take those thoughts and map out your fabulous business idea into a written business plan. You must denote

“There is no other country in the world that provides you with an endless opportunity to generate income.”

HIS finance

every detail to the process so your can business become successful. Of course it can be adjusted if necessary, but this literally spells out how the journey will unfold. Establish who your perfect customer is. Often we try to capture too large of a customer base and cannot handle immediate large volume or diverse needs. As a smaller business, it is best to establish who your perfect customer is and design your business and marketing plan around that customer’s needs. Keep it simple with written processes that will be easily understood by others. Too large of a customer base and you might get lost in the mass market. Actually write the Business Plan. A basic business plan will include an executive summary, a detailed description of the business, and an explanation as to how you will market and manage the business plus the financial projections. Of course this plan can be changed as necessary to adjust for changes in market or any process. This will also serve as a great reminder of your goals when you feel distracted or discouraged. Stay focused with your business plan and you will move through success with ease.

Get a Mentor I cannot stress how important this factor is. You need to surround yourself with people that are smarter than you in the areas that you need to learn. Plus having a mentor or business coach is someone that will hold you accountable for the goals that you have set. Personally I suggest that you hand pick that this person will be based upon who you feel would best suit this position. If you do not have anyone that you know professionally or personally then you can access experts to assist you as counselors through one of many nonprofit organizations. Google is a wonderful tool here.

Marketing a New Business Marketing is my favorite part. This is where you get to let the creative juices flow. With online digital technology, you can create almost anything you need from the internet. There are so many free downloads to provide you with wonderful marketing and presentation tools. I suggest going with what you truly feel.

Preparing Your Finances This is often a difficult part for the new business owner. Reason being is often you do not know what your operating expenses will be nor do you know how much income you will recieve. Research and cost comparison will help kick start where to start on the financial spread sheet. There are SBA financing resources available today for new start up businesses. The basics that you must consider are your start up costs vs. revenue. You must clarify at what level does your business break even. It is from this point upwards that you set your income goals. If you are able to barter any of your goods or services

through trade, then by all means that will further lower your operating costs. If start up funds are difficult to come by through traditional financial sources, then I encourage you to contact other business professionals who might be interested in investing in your business. Often private investors are more expensive but can deliver cash with ease. So now you are armed with some knowledge and resources to make a change in your life. Don’t remain a modern day slave and get out there. Carry a note pad or enter notes onto your cell phone or other personal electronic device. Ideas will come to you as each day progresses. Your ideas will grow and expand into living your dream. If you find that you are having challenges moving forward, my favorite freebie tool is the internet. It is a wonderful tool to learn about everything. This will also enable you to research your competition. Know your competition as if they are your best friend. This will better position you being the newcomer in the market. I always remind potential clients who are loyal to my competition that Steve Young was once second string for the San Francisco 49ers and look what he accomplished. This story creates a visual and usually strikes up a fun conversation. The more people know about you and your business, the easier it will unfold. Here is one last thought; if you start multiple diverse businesses you will create multiple sources of income that will enable you thrive regardless of the economic state of our country, state or city. This is something that we all must consider based upon our current existence in the “Great Recession.” Instead of looking for over time hours at your primary job, consider a second job or second source of income from a part time job. Great sources of income that can be done part time are in real estate, hobby farm, insurance, etc. Stay passionate and stay focused. To fully grasp the potential of this evolutionary transformation and the power of the people involved, you first need to understand where it came from. Fresno hasn’t always been about River Park or Fig Garden shopping centers. There used to be a time when Downtown Fresno was the Central Valley’s hot spot, and now it’s making a comeback which is hard to ignore. In 1959, when Austrian architect Victor Gruen opened the first pedestrian mall in the nation located in Kalamazoo, Michigan, it was only the beginning. Fresno’s Fulton Mall, constructed in 1964, helped set the standard for pedestrian malls throughout the nation. It was the highlight of its time, a diamond in the rough. The unique pedestrian mall stretched from Fresno’s Tuoloumne Street to Inyo Street and quickly became the Central Valley’s getaway. The ever-present movement taking place today in Downtown Fresno is not the first of its kind. The downtown district has seen its ups and downs, its highs and its lows. Before Victor Gruen was hired to construct the pedestrian mall in Downtown Fresno, Fulton Street served primarily as a commercial center. Large department stores such as JC Penney and Gottschalks were located on this strip, often referred to as Fresno’s “main street” at the time, along with various office buildings. All was grand in Downtown Fresno, but only for a second. As World War II came to an end, Downtown Fresno fell into the lone shadows of popular growing northern shopping centers such as Manchester Center and Fig Garden Village. Suburban homes grew like wildfire everywhere north of downtown. As everything shifted to the north; everyone wanted a taste of something new. It was as if the people of the Central Valley had forgotten the glitz and glam that downtown was once capable of. Its sparkle had been taken away by newer, bigger and more successful shopping centers. Not all hope was lost in the fight for Downtown Fresno. Feeling the effects of northern migration, downtown business owners teamed up with the City of Fresno to hire a man who could turn this hub around, a man who could make old things shiny and new again. Victor Gruen stepped up to the challenge and began constructing Downtown Fresno’s Fulton Mall in March of 1964. Unlike many construction projects today, the Fulton Mall was completed in only five months. Gruen’s plan to redevelop Downtown Fresno included an entirely new downtown traffic pattern, more freeways and most import of all, the Fulton Mall. The redevelopment of Downtown Fresno wasn’t just aimed at Fresno residents, but instead for the entire Central Valley. Gruen didn’t just want to restore Downtown Fresno to what is used to be, he planned to make it even better than before. Landscape architect, Garrett Eckbo, worked alongside Gruen to create a peaceful and artistic lifestyle in Downtown Fresno. They wanted to create a picture of what life in Fresno was really like through art and architecture. Eckbo used hundreds of trees and shrubs, waterfalls and abstract sculptures to give Downtown Fresno an artistic vibe and to reflect the agricultural and natural roots of the Central Valley. Valley’s most common crops were planted throughout the Fulton Mall and remain there today. With the help of creative thinkers like Eckbo, Gruen’s dream to make Downtown Fresno better than ever became a reality when construction of the Fulton Mall was completed in September of 1964. The Fulton Mall received worldwide attention and even won the “Excellence in Community Architecture” award in 1965 and the “National Design Excellence” award in 1968. Downtown Fresno had made a comeback. Despite these awards and the success of Downtown Fresno’s pedestrian mall, there were still a few kinks to work out. Parking remained a major issue for downtown business owners as well as downtown residents. Gruen had planned to build a multi-story garage, but because of its high cost, Gruen never completed it. Instead, the majority of Broadway Avenue was turned into surface level parking spaces. In retail, downtown business owners suffered from an imbalance. While one side of the Fulton Mall was home to large department stores, the other end was somewhat alienated, bringing in far less consumers. It was as though one end of the mall was full of life, while the other end sat practically unnoticed. In an attempt to fix this disproportion, the Fresno Redevelopment Agency purchased part of the Fulton Mall in 1968 with plans to build multiple offices and retail mixed together. The agency planned to make the Fulton Mall equal, so it started evicting residents immediately. Unfortunately, the agency took on more work than it could handle and by 1971 plans had stopped evolving and an empty lot took up part of the Fulton Mall. Even with these hardships, Downtown Fresno flourished. Business owners were overjoyed with their successful sales and people of the Central Valley once again flocked to Downtown Fresno for food, fun and entertainment. A successful revitalization had been accomplished and construction of pedestrian malls all over the nation began. For the second time, happiness was short-lived for Downtown Fresno. The pedestrian mall met its ultimate competitor in 1970 when the Fresno Fashion Fair Mall opened in north Fresno. Fashion Fair Mall was located near many of Fresno’s newest suburbs and the growing campus of California State University, Fresno, so once again the need to venture downtown faded away. Shaw Avenue became the new hot spot, while Downtown Fresno and its dreams were slowly forgotten about. The popularity of Downtown Fresno only declined from this point on. One by one, major retailers closed up shop and headed for greener pastures, a.k.a., north Fresno. These vacant buildings were left available to small and family owned businesses and generated less profit for downtown than previous stores had. For the most part, the only people who shopped in Downtown Fresno were the downtown residents. This decline in profit led to fewer well-maintained homes and businesses and by 1974, the Gruen plan had been completely forgotten about. Downtown Fresno had once

again become a place of the past. A deserted area that had once been the talk of the town now seemed a dangerous and unfit area. Downtown Fresno sat untouched and unchanged for several years. In April of 2002, an attempt was made to put Downtown Fresno back into the spotlight with the opening of the Grizzlies Stadium, and it was a success. The 12,500 capacity stadium is still a shiny spectacle of life in Downtown Fresno. Due to the success of the Grizzlies Stadium, Chukchansi Gold Resort and Casino announced in 2006 that it would serve as the corporate sponsor and the stadium became known as Chukchansi Park. Many redevelopers and architects came along once they saw the accomplishment of Grizzlies Stadium. This lead to new aspirations and plans to completely bring Downtown Fresno back to life once and for all, but none of them could really conquer the tedious tasks that lied ahead…until now. Once again, Downtown Fresno is being revived, only this time the plans to rebuild it are smarter and the people involved have a determination and creativity that will not be altered or stopped. Modern apartment buildings with a twist, lofts and townhomes are popping up so quickly in Downtown Fresno that the change from a year ago is drastic. Fulton Village, Broadway Lofts, Iron Bird Lofts, Vagabond Lofts and H Street Lofts are all quickly becoming the new hot place to live in the Central Valley. Granville Homes, the builder of many of the lofts, apartments and townhomes in Downtown Fresno, describes Fulton Village as, “living upscale downtown.” This phrase perfectly captures many of the lofts, apartments, and townhomes gaining popularity in Downtown Fresno. The new living spaces in downtown have an essence about them that shows

how modern Downtown Fresno can be. Reza Assemi, a developer and artist working to rebuild Downtown Fresno said that the movement is taking off so quickly that two years from now, Downtown Fresno will be hard to recognize. Reza has been trying to create an urban community in Downtown Fresno since 1999 by encouraging local artists to join the movement aimed at building a better downtown environment. Reza began creating an artistic atmosphere in Downtown Fresno by painting murals on many of the walls and buildings in the area. The Pearl Building, located at 1841 Fulton Street, was Reza’s first project, and ever since then the Mural District has been evolving into an even greater masterpiece than envisioned. Reza took the old, beat up Red Cross building and turned it into four unique live/work artistic studios with the goal of developing an inspiring space for artists to work, live and display their art. Reza’s murals and the success of the Pearl Building were so astounding that he decided to take it one step further and began construction on lofts, apartments and townhomes with the same original urban and artistic vibe, creating the Mural District. “We’re trying to create a backbone in the arts,” Reza said. “It’s hard to create that kind of urban atmosphere anywhere else in Fresno.” Art in Downtown Fresno isn’t reflected only through museums. Art in Downtown Fresno is a reflection of the buildings, the homes, the lifestyle and the people. Some of the homes and office spaces in Downtown Fresno are in need of repair, but the lifestyle and the people have not changed, only the atmosphere. Reza said that, “there is so much momentum in Downtown Fresno right now and it’s only going to come back in the same direction.” To create an artistic and urban atmosphere in Downtown

Fresno, many steps are being taken. It’s not just about one aspect of life. The urban atmosphere in Downtown Fresno is being shown through creative thinkers and brilliant artists like Reza and the goals that they have for what their city should be like. With the way that their goals are advancing, the Mural District may just turn out to be a perfect picture of what Reza dreamt it would be. The Mural District is not only made up of lofts, apartments and townhomes; it also encompasses art studios and many other small businesses that residents can work and play in. Many of the downtown living spaces are covered headto-toe with eco-smart technology including large amounts of natural lighting, solar panel systems and low-VOC paint. Low-VOC paint releases low-level toxic emissions so that air pollution is reduced. Another amenity offered in the downtown properties are tankless water heaters. Granville’s eco-smart features describe exactly what it is that tankless water heaters do. “Tank water heaters store, heat and reheat water constantly, only supplying hot water based on the capacity of the tank. Alternatively, tankless water heaters heat water continuously, reducing the energy usage and you will never run out of hot water, no matter how much you use.” Advanced Performance Windows are another feature that Granville is proud to offer to its residents. The advanced windows have no metal on it, so it reduces the amount of heat allowed in a home. The windows are also Low-E (lox emissivity), so it helps protect residents from harmful sun rays. Another highlight of Granville’s eco-friendly features is the high-efficiency, light-colored metal cool roof technology. This roof helps residents to control the temperature in their homes and save money on electricity as well. Features like these are causing resident to take a second glance at the lifestyle and housing options available in

Downtown Fresno. Not only are the lofts, apartments and townhomes eco-friendly, but they are also quite easy on the eye. Features like original brick walls, hardwood floors, private balconies, granite countertops and artistic floor plans are putting a little bit of life and spirit back into the homes of Downtown Fresno. Some of the properties also include an attached two car garage, as well as community gardening centers to promote healthy eating and to also restore the look of Downtown Fresno. The Iron Bird Lofts, located in the Mural District, is a private gated community that even offers floor to ceiling windows and a breakfast bar in some of its spaces. There is no better way to be a part of a movement than to actually throw yourself into it completely. One leader in the movement to revitalize Downtown Fresno who lives in the area he is trying to rebuild is Craig Scharton, Director of Downtown and Community Revitalization for Fresno. Craig purchased his home in the Lowell neighborhood and has been inspiring those around him to do good for the community ever since. By making a garden out of his front and back yard filled with avocado, sage, lavender, basil and rosemary, Craig is able to encourage those around him to take advantage of the valuable resources that Fresno has to offer. “I wanted to show that we have land and water and sunshine and that it doesn’t always have to be a gigantic project,” Craig said. “You could do this little stuff and there can be access to healthy foods too.” Craig is not only working to restore the outside of his home, step by step he is also making his home more eco-friendly by adding such features as a tankless water heater. Although Craig is proud of the resources that

Fresno has to offer, he thinks that many Fresno residents are self-conscious of their city. “We’re always comparing ourselves to Los Angeles and San Francisco which would only make sense if we were a world class power house city,” Craig said. “We have a lot of self-esteem issues to get over and we need to just be proud of who we are.” Craig’s garden is more than just a healthy hobby; it’s a movement all in its own. “It’s a way for me to engage with the neighbors,” Craig said. “When I’m out here doing my yard work, they stop, they see someone doing something different and they ask questions,” The children who live next door to Craig became so interested in his garden that Craig helped them plant a garden in their front yard as well. Craig said that, “we want food to be a big part of the revitalization effort, and we want our community to start realizing how much food production actually happens here and to be proud of that.” One by one, Craig hopes that more residents will adopt his gardening examples so that Downtown Fresno can really be a reflection of what we have to offer here. “Our downtown does not have healthy neighborhoods around it. They’re predominately concentrated poverty neighborhoods,” Craig said. This needs to change. Even though Downtown Fresno is moving on up, there are still a few issues to work out. According to Craig, the biggest problem that Downtown Fresno faces is its planning. “Our rules and regulations for development have been out of date for about fifty years, and we’re in the process of fixing them,” Craig said. The rules and regulations for the development of Downtown Fresno were created in 1960 and Craig’s job is to revise them so that they fit the Fresno that we know and love today. “Because we were living with these rules that were created in 1960, downtown was the most difficult place to do development because the rules were really written for suburbs, so every time you tried to do a downtown development it went against the rules and it was really frustrating,” Craig said. Although creating such rules is a long process, the outcome will greatly help Downtown Fresno gain more business and residents at a quicker pace. “Now rules will be written for encouraging good buildings, good spaces and good businesses, so they will be really clear,” Craig said. “If we don’t have the planning right then the other stuff won’t take off. It can be really frustrating because people want to see results, but if you don’t do the foundation right then you will never get the right results.” In 2012, the people of the Central Valley should start to see the slow but sure start of the California High-Speed Rail. The planned project will go through major California cities such as, San Francisco, San Jose, Fresno, Los Angeles and San Diego for a reasonable price. The high-speed rail will make it easier for Fresno residents to visit other California cities much quicker than by car. Most importantly, the highspeed rail will be going right through Downtown Fresno and will boost the amount of people visiting it. When Fresno becomes the spectacle of the downtown that it is planned to be, the addition of more people will only help it to succeed. “Our part of it is to put the station in a location where it will give the revitalization effort the biggest possible bang, so we’ve put the downtown station near Mariposa and H Street in our downtown plans so that when people get off the train, they will basically dump right into the heart of our downtown area,” Craig said. Not to mention, the high-speed rail will provide an abundance of jobs for the people of the Central Valley as well as boost the amount of money being spent in Downtown Fresno. Although the high-speed rail will be starting soon, the project is not proposed to be completed until approximately 2026.

“Downtown Fresno is becoming bright again, with new attractions, new homes and a new life.”

An Interview with Mayor Swearengin Before Ashley Swearengin became mayor of Fresno, her ideas and goals for downtown had already been set in motion. Now, as mayor of Fresno, Swearengin is making her vision of Fresno a reality. With the right planning and the right people, Downtown Fresno is quickly becoming more than anyone envisioned it ever could be. “The real key is recruiting the right mix of everything,” Swearengin said. The plans for Fresno are out of date and in order for a successful revitalization to take place, those plans need to be fixed. “We first have to fix the policies that make it possible,” Swearengin said. “Plans and finances must be ready.” To get even more people excited about the downtown movement, Swearengin is encouraging Fresno residents to buy local products as much as possible. “If everyone shifted just ten percent of their purchases to buy local, 2,000 jobs would be added in Fresno.” Events like the Fresno Food Expo are giving residents the knowledge they need to make smart local purchases that will help the cities economy. Even with downtown growing at such a rapid pace, Fresno still faces four other major issues that Swearengin hopes to change. They are: work force development, expansion of the industrial sector, appropriate management of land use, energy and resources, and regional transportation with the high speed rail. The high speed rail that is coming to Fresno is something that all residents should be excited about. “It will just be a floodgate of opportunities,” Swearengin said. The high speed rail will help to give Downtown Fresno an urban city vibe as well as invite more people to experience what downtown has to offer. “It’s going to happen no matter what, we just have to make sure that we have all of our planning ready,” Swearengin said. Swearengin expects the movement in Downtown Fresno to take about ten years and by that time it will have a life of its own. This is the first decade of the movement in Downtown Fresno and the decades to come will only see a stronger and faster movement than todays. Swearengin feels that the people of Fresno are excited about the revitalization movement, and they should be. “Public support for downtown is demonstrable, people really want their downtown,” Ashley Swearengin said. Downtown Fresno is a quickly becoming a center for culture and commerce that Swearengin thinks will “brand our city as a capital city.” Instead of simply expanding Fresno and forgetting about downtown, Swearengin wants to fix what we already have. If the city chose to forget about Downtown Fresno, it would lose money and be burdened by such a bad area. “In a sense, we would be eating our own,” Swearengin said. The economic value that Downtown Fresno holds is something that shouldn’t be overlooked. Swearengin and many other creative minds throughout the Central Valley have realized the potential that Downtown Fresno holds. They know that the opportunity is among us and the timing couldn’t be better. The movement is growing with each day, and more and more people are getting involved. “Downtown revitalization is happening,” Swearengin said. “It’s no longer a hope and a promise for the future, it is happening.”

The movement to rebuild Downtown Fresno isn’t aimed at fitting only the needs of Fresno residents. “Downtown is really the center of a whole bunch of communities, so a lot of times it’s easier to get people from Reedley or Fowler or Kerman into downtown,” Craig said. Downtown has never been only for the people of Fresno. It was once the best place to be in the Central Valley, and Craig, along with many others, is working to restore that fact. “It’s not Fresnocentric,” Craig said. “Our target is really everyone who lives within a 45 minute drive of downtown.” The entire process will only help Fresno to grow as a city. When more people come to visit Fresno’s downtown area, more people might also explore some of the other unique amenities that the rest of Fresno has to offer. A tourist attraction loved by many that will reap the benefits of more people visiting Fresno’s downtown area is the Fresno Chaffee Zoo. The planned California High-Speed Rail will also tremendously help boost the zoo’s popularity, something that zoo staff is very excited about. Terri Mejorado, Fresno Chaffee Zoo Marketing Director thinks that creating more housing in Downtown Fresno will greatly help the zoo to attract more visitors. The zoo is already creating more events to draw people in, such as Safari Night, which is an elegant beer and wine tasting event for adults only. Terri wants adults to come and re-experience the zoo like they did when they were children. When more people visit the Fresno Chaffee Zoo, more people will have to drive through the rest of Downtown Fresno, and with the revitalization movement in progress, they will be encouraged to explore what else it has to offer. The revitalization process is a city effort. It cannot be done successfully if only parts of Downtown Fresno want to be restored. All of Downtown Fresno has to want the restoration and it is up to the rest of Fresno to help. “Today, I feel that I have the complete support of the city,” Terri said. The zoo is more than just animals; the

zoo is a way for adults in the Central Valley to remember their childhood, to relive that excitement and to pass it on to the next generation. The lifestyle in Downtown Fresno is shifting. It is no longer dull, filled with grey buildings concentrated only by low income families. Downtown Fresno is becoming bright again, stuffed with new attractions, new homes and a new life. Many Fresno residents don’t want to acknowledge the fact that we are afraid of Downtown Fresno. We have created the reputation that it now holds and if we want to fit it and restore the reputation to what it should be, then we will have to overcome our own ideas about it and actually give Downtown Fresno the time of day which it deserves. This new life requires new space, and that is exactly what Granville Homes is providing. Darius Assemi, of Granville Homes, thinks that “no city can be successful without a downtown core.” The goal that Granville aimed to accomplish was to build homes that people would be proud to live in. A home is more than just a place you eat and sleep in; a home is somewhere that you are comfortable in, somewhere that you make memories in and somewhere that you build a life in. What Downtown Fresno needs more than anything, according to Darius, is to be exciting. It needs to once again be filled with spirit, soul and activity. Granville wanted to make this dream a reality for the people of the Central Valley and it is off to a good start and a promising finish. The movement in Downtown Fresno will continue to rise, it will continue to grow and it will continue to prosper. Things are not only changing, they have already changed. The movement is now. It is glistening, it is radiant and it is happening because of the creative thinkers and their hard work. Downtown Fresno is not the dry, d a r k , out-of-date section of the Central Valley that it once was. Instead, it is filled with high spirits, heart and most of all, an essence of art that truly reflects the proud, agricultural mega-house which Fresno truly is.

What Women Want: Eight Rules to Being a Gentlemen By: DeLaine Nikaido

I am always impressed by a man who opens the door for a lady. It is such a simple act, yet it’s a gesture associated with what seems in today’s society to be a rare and endangered species, known as a gentlemen. Here are some rules which can take you or your guy from Neanderthal to being a member of one of the most elite clubs in the world, The Gentleman’s Club. Rule Number One The first rule of The Gentlemen’s Club is talk like a gentleman, especially when in the company of women and children. Foul language has no place in polite company. Gentlemen avoid F-bombs and other curse words and save the locker room and trash talk for when you are alone with your peers. Shouting profanity and making obscene gestures at sporting events is anything but gentlemanly behavior. Other people can see and hear you. Gentlemen express themselves in a socially acceptable manner.

Rule Number Two The second rule of The Gentlemen’s Club is to practice good grooming and hygiene. Gentlemen pay attention to their appearance. Clothes should fit properly and be appropriate for the occasion and location. Gentlemen not only look good; they smell nice, too. This doesn’t mean douse yourself in cologne, however. Take daily showers. Gentlemen don’t smell funky. They always use deodorant. They brush and floss their teeth and keep mints or gum on hand to keep their breath fresh. Regular haircuts and trimming or shaving of facial hair also are part of a gentleman’s routine.

Rule Number Three The third rule of The Gentlemen’s Club is being courteous. Women, particularly those with good manners themselves, take note of a guy who opens doors, helps a lady put on her jacket, offers his seat to women and older people and generally lends a helping hand when needed. A gentleman never talks with his mouth full. He looks at people when he speaks to them and shakes hands when first meeting someone. Gentlemen say “please,” “thank you,” “excuse me,” and “I’m sorry” when the situation calls for it. A true gentleman is assertive and persuasive without being rude and condescending.

54

JULY/AUGUST 2011

Rule Number Four The fourth rule of The Gentlemen’s Club is to treat women with respect. A gentleman never degrades a woman. He doesn’t call or refer to them in derogatory terms. He does not gawk or make vulgar noises or gestures at them. A gentleman never forces himself on anyone nor does he kiss and tell.

Rule Number Five Rule number five of The Gentlemen’s Club is to engage in polite, two-way conversations. Gentlemen refrain from talking about themselves too much. Of course they talk about their accomplishments, but do so in a way that doesn’t come across like they’re conceited. They wait their turn to talk and allow others to speak. They show an interest in the other person with whom they are talking and ask questions that get him or her to open up without prying. A gentleman recognizes that unless you know a person well, it’s best to avoid subjects such as religion and politics when making small talk.

Rule Number Six Rule number six of The Gentlemen’s Club is lead by example. Gentlemen are role models. They are honest, loyal, dependable, and trustworthy. They are men of good character; stand-up guys who teach their boys how to be stand-up men.

Rule Number Seven Rule number seven of The Gentlemen’s Club is know when to say when. Gentlemen know their limits when it comes to alcohol. They don’t get drunk and disorderly in public because drunken people tend to do and say things that get them into trouble or come back to haunt them. It is especially important to avoid acting like an inebriated fool in this day and age of cell phone cameras and video recorders. Within minutes, your drunken antics could be posted all over Facebook for just about anyone to see. Gentlemen know how to have a good time without getting wasted.

Rule Number Eight Rule number eight of The Gentlemen’s Club is true gents avoid fighting. In the movie Enter the Dragon, Bruce Lee’s character, aptly demonstrates the art of fighting without fighting when he outwits a bully on a boat. Lee accepts the tormentor’s challenge to fight, but suggests they do it on a nearby island. He then sends the guy drifting away by himself on a dinghy. Gentlemen stand up for their beliefs and for those close to them, but they can agree to disagree and are able to part ways without a fight. Gentlemen never bully and they square off only when absolutely necessary. Do not confuse being a gentleman with being a wimp or acting like a nerd. True gentlemen are strong, cool and collected. They mean what they say, say what they mean and their actions are courteous and honorable. There is no doubt that gentlemen stand out in a crowd. Because they are a rare breed, gentlemen make lasting impressions on women and people in general. However, be sure to save some of that Neanderthal mentality. In this girl’s opinion, the perfect guy is 95% gentleman and 5% caveman. Let’s just say that a suave, debonair style mixed with a touch of raw, primal behavior keeps things interesting.

STYLE guide

This season the runways are covered in hair. The latest trend hitting the fashion world is that of controlled texture. In this months spread we took Nicole form short, straight hair, to a full body explosion of luxurious curls, volume and length. To achieve a modified version of this look at home, follow these simple steps. When planning your next occasion, or simply updating your look, remember to turn to George Garcia and the professionals at The LOFT Salon to help you find your inner style Goddess.

1

When achieving this look at home remember to start by adding volume. For this shoot we added temporary glue in extensions in varying layers to add the additional thickness to Nicole’s hair. This can be done at home by using clip in extensions which can be made specifically for you by your salon specialist. Then begin sectioning of the hair.

2

Once you have sectioned off your tresses, begin curling your hair. We used a small curling iron to make tight ringlets which encompassed Nicole’s crown. Make sure to spray your hair to get the desired control which is key to achieving this look. Make sure each lock is texturized evenly before continuing the process.

3

After you have successfully curled each strand, begin pulling down the ringlets and brushing the under layer out. This will give you extra volume. The key is to keep the controlled curls at the base by the root. After relaxing the ringlets, go back and hit certain pieces with the iron again, add more spray and voila.

This season color is abundant. Some of the trend colors for this summer in fashion and make-up are varying shades of plum, metallic’s and grey. We turned to artist Juan Salcedo to take Nicole through various looks in this spread. We used variations of a smoky eye highlighting some of the key color trends in make-up this year. Another must have for the summer is a metallic gold crème for your lid and a subtle bronzer to hit the cheeks giving you a youthful glow to sport during these hot summer months.

When selecting the wardrobe for this month’s HIS girl, Nicole Giordano of Y101FM and My Indie Nation, the staff at HIS Magazine turned to two known experts, Lindsey Ziegler and Ruthie Inocencio. This duo is known for their creative take on fashion and innovative custom styling. The goal was simple, to create inspiring looks which would make the reader think outside the box and find new and innovative ways to rediscover their own personal wardrobe and style. The following is a style breakdown you can use when looking for that next piece, or to consult when pairing new looks within your wardrobe. Remember fashion is fun. Don’t be afraid of taking a risk with your attire, who knows you might just be on the verge of something amazing. There are many sides to Nicole. We decided to let each look speak to the different aspects of her personality. With concept in toe, the rest was easy. Here are some things to consider when you are trying to mimic these looks. Find pieces that flatter your body. Identify your best asset and play to it. Ask yourself how do you want to be perceived? What are you trying to say with your clothing? Colors, embellishments and accessories speak volumes about your personality, use them! So dive in and find your inner style maven. Look #1: Music Goddess Pg58 In this look we were trying to channel strong female musicians throughout history. We chose key pieces reminiscent of past decades: fire engine red knee high boots (1960’s), fringe crop top (1970’s), and metallic lamé leggings (1980’s). With gold as our power color of choice, Nicole is adorned with a Whiting & Davis serpent belt and gem-encrusted collar from Coco Consignment. Look #2 Glamour Girl Meets Saucy Minx Pg60 With this look we wanted to highlight Nicole’s inner glamazone. She is sleek, sexy, and empowered in this catsuit which Ruthie and I created specifically for the shoot. We accessorized her with a studded glove, crystal jewels, Dior chain bracelet, and Vivienne Westwood armour ring. These Senso python wedges added a ferocious finishing touch. THE ART OF NOISE: An Interview with Nicole Giordano of Y101FM and My Indie Nation

What projects are you currently involved with? Which one is most rewarding? Why? Every night, I get to waltz into a studio and jump behind the mic on Y101 FM (101.1 FM and www.y101hits.com). My show is called After Hours and runs weekdays from 7p.m. to Midnight. Working for the station keeps me highly engaged with the community and busy with events, shows, bands, crazy listeners and a great team. I love the station and the people I get to work with there. We really have so much fun doing what we do. Having the opportunity to work in radio has been one of my biggest accomplishments. My background is in television, so getting the chance to challenge myself and hit the airwaves has been a blast. As a music lover, I’m really lucky to be in a position to flip a switch and broadcast throughout the Valley about the bands I love, songs I dance to, dumb facts that entertain me… I have a music blog called My Indie Nation (www.myindienation.com). It’s a cool little project I created with my husband, someone who I look up to and gain much of my taste from. We feature mp3s, videos, original interviews and photos of bands and artists that stand out to us. We aim to highlight the artists making a splash here in the Valley, whether they hail from the area or come to play here. There is a killer local scene in town and in the Valley, and we have access to some amazing bands. It feels good to be a part of it in whatever way we can. The most rewarding thing about this project is that it is part of a bigger, collective energy that is hungry and growing every day. I’m talking about music and arts in our city, people! My peace of mind comes from having my paws in a variety of projects that span my interests. I have always loved to write. It has long been a little therapy of mine. There’s something incredibly soothing about putting your thoughts on paper and seeing that not only do they make sense to me, but that they make sense to others... and they’re actually interesting to others. Imagine that! I work as a freelance writer for a few magazines that focus on anything related to music, fashion, health and beauty. I write when I’m inspired and sometimes I take long, extended breaks. But personally, I always enjoy jotting down my weird little thoughts that make me laugh into a notebook… that I keep locked away in a safe buried place in my backyard that’s guarded by snakes. The most rewarding part about my work is being able to meet fresh faces and surround myself with inspiring creative types. The entertainment industry is tough; it’s cut throat sometimes if you are around the wrong people. So I am careful to choose the right people. And work in a way that doesn’t compromise myself. I’m very eager to keep it moving ahead, but it is definitely important to me to stop and smell the roses, make some friends and leave long-lasting impressions on people I come across. So for me, it’s the people that makes what I do rewarding. continues >> JULY / AUGUST 2011 MARCH / APRIL 2011

When you think about fashion what inspires you? What look/trend best embodies your character? My fashion inspiration comes from my mood, music, space, movies and my husband. There is nothing more fun then forgetting the day-to-day bustle, walking into that hidden thrift store with a light shining down on something that only I can see… and voila. There it is. That one little treasure with years of history and mystery beaten into it. Where did it come from? What adventures will this piece go through with me? My imagination runs wild and this is what inspires me about fashion. That something as simple an old bandana or a cracked leather jacket can become such a part of you that people remember you by it. To me, fashion is a lot of times about the story that’s behind the pieces. I am intrigued by the Haight/Ashbury 60’s and flappers in the 20’s… old movie icons like Brigitte Bardot, Edie Sedgwick and Anna Karina… musicians with the utmost punk ethic like PJ Harvey and Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth… and my grandma’s closet. I don’t typically like to take what I’m wearing too seriously, because it’s cooler to mish mash whatever strikes your fancy as you browse through your hangers. It’s all about what makes you feel good and sends you off into your creative space. Defining your own look sets you apart… why become an imitation when there’s only one of you on the planet? Music is an influential part of your life. What has the industry done for you? Where do you see it going? What genre best embodies your personality? How does it influence your fashion? Music has introduced to me to some lifelong friendships and has also redefined patience for me. Indie artists have to be some of the most devoted, passionate, quirky, creative and patient insomniacs that I have ever met. I love it when I meet artists who take their music seriously and reveal their hearts through it. A lot them have some great stories, and to be able to share in this with them is a killer experience. The industry has changed drastically and is obviously still doing so. With digital, there is just a ton of music at our fingertips. It gives us a chance to see bands and artists and get as creative as possible with the playing field leveled out a bit. How do bands make themselves stand out without a million dollars backing them? It’s pretty cool to see. But as fans, we need to remember to support these bands that are making (usually free) music we love… Go to shows! Buy t-shirts and merchandise! Tip your bartender!

As we travel around, we all see how much pride other cities take in their downtowns. In a lot of ways it helps define a city. Fresno has such a unique history that is visually represented by the buildings you see downtown. It’s important for our town to embrace that and continue to build on our foundation. There is some work to be done, but the coolest thing about it is that people are so fueled right now to get that work done. Energetic, cultured, artistic, Fresno-loving people are making contributions and it’s working. And the best thing is to be a part of watching it grow. You’ve got The Loft Salon located inside the old Security Building, pop culture maniac thrift stores like Yoshi NOW! and Urban Salvage, coffee and ukulele players at Iron Bird Café and the cheers and jeers coming from Chukchansi Park. The lofts and art galleries are popping up on the map, and of course with Fulton 55, you’ll have all the ingredients you need for a stellar day downtown. How are you influencing the revitalization of downtown through your involvement with different organizations and so forth? As far as my downtown influence goes, being a voice in media is the best way for me to spread some love. Sending out positive vibes through My Indie Nation and talking about local happenings in the downtown area over the air on Y101 FM is something I am always doing, because I believe in it. I really try to encourage others to believe in it as well and at least go check out what everyone is buzzing about. If there is an event happening there that sounds cool, see what it’s all about, then tell a friend. The news will spread. That’s how this town works. It’s also really easy to get involved with groups like Creative Fresno. You get access to unique events and get connected with some of the most driven people in town. We all have our own little ideas of how we want our city to grow - just find a simple way to help support that idea… it feels good. What impact do you think Fulton 55 has had on the community? It’s like someone injected a dose of nightlife into the veins of Downtown Fresno. Fulton 55 has given us all a new place to explore music, mingle and jingle. It has opened up a new home for local artists and bands to play and has lifted the spirits of music lovers in general. The venue has attracted the attention of tons of bands and media outlets from overseas and throughout the U.S. to make a stop in our city to play, putting Fresno on the tour map. It’s the kind of place that is going to allow us to see some really amazing bands in our own backyard.

I’m all over the board with the music that ignites my fire. Dean Martin or Air while I’m cookin’ it up in my kitchen. Flaming Lips, Hope Sandoval, Beach House, Jules Goodhart, Fierce Creatures, Karen O, Strange Vine, Rachael Yamagata, the Sleepy Jackson, Monsters Are Waiting and the Pixies (to name a few) playing in my head the rest of the time. It’s hard to nail down a genre I love or that embodies me. It’s really just whatever makes my ears and my body feel happy or sad or feel something at all... that’s what I’m into.

What direction would you like to see it go?

When you think of Downtown Fresno what comes to mind?

If you had a personal mantra what would it be and why?

Downtowns to me are often times the most redeeming part of a city - the part that has life, movement, art and history. I love the fact that I can park someplace and then simply walk around and encounter a world of shopping, food, shows or catch a ballgame. It’s an interesting thing to face the need of recreating a downtown like we face. But it is absolutely happening and the creative energy that people are feeding on is contagious.

I personally would like to see the venue expand to bring in some eyepopping mainstream artists that will not only get the attention of new audiences in our community, but from audiences in surrounding cities. I think they are on the right track by bringing in every genre of music and have done a great job keeping our community’s ears happy. It would be interesting to see it morph into a bigger music resource for the Valley that bands between L.A. and S.F. simply can’t pass up. “If you don’t know what to do, do something.” Just seems to make sense. Keeping busy makes me feel productive and sometimes I can get stuck like any other Earthling. It’s important to keep on keeping on. As long you are confident and trust your instincts, you’re moving in the right direction.
