HISHAM HUSSAIN

My journey through architecture has been an exploration of intimate connections between spaces and people. From a dot to a line; the stories of a site, characters of a space, emotions of a group, are all narrated.

As a budding architect, I aspire to seek out this philosophy and ethics towards creating meaningful designs and visualize poetic spaces harmonious to nature. Architecture is an art discovered through the process with the output being the purpose, and this is the philosophy I perform in my work.

Work Experience

Inside // Outside is a play with an element of transformation in spaces; a residential space for a designer, known for his methods of problem-solving through the nature of reversing the question and exposing them.

The programs float above and around the studio as levels Studio as the prominent program

The site is located in the heart of the city, Vidhana Soudha and is filled with green shaded canopies. It gives an opportunity for Tinker Hatfield to reside in a space where he can observe the daily activities of the city, while existing within its natural elements.

Inside // Outside attempts to become that space where Hatfield could be inspired for his creativity, an active space for his passion, and also a celebration of all his works and achievements, which continues to inspire him.

Tinker Hatfield, a world renowned designer and an ardent lover of athletics, is a highly creative and knowledgeable designer. His enthusiasm and love for sports, makes him more efficient and enjoy his job even more. He likes to spend most of his time working on the designs of sneakers. As much as Hatfield loves the track and designing with his team, he also is someone who appreciates his time alone, to recharge and return back to work. A majority of his part time goes into solo activities like surfing, rock-climbing and working on his automobiles.

The Studio takes up a larger portion of the space. The private functions are all distributed around this space. A perforated system of glass and polyethylene screens alongwith light transmitting concrete, surround the Studio to create an experience of open transparency, but with the privacy Hatfield requires.

The Studio is a transformable space that opens out of the box, as well as works within the closed frame, aided by modular furniture that can be positioned or removed based on usage.

The project explores the build of a live-work space for a designer, taking into consideration their philosophies, ethics and character; to create a conceptual space that allows for creative freedom within a practical space.

The Identity Point
Chikkajala Fort Bengaluru

CONCEPT

Chikkajala Fort represents an elegant glory of history and time through culture and heritage. The design aims to retain these memories and give chance for the stories to continue, by bringing the community together to reconnect their identity with the fort and revitalize it from its ruins.

The Kalyani becomes the central pivot to all these activities, and the colonnade, most of which retained, would become the library for the community, creating a colonnade of memories and stories of the culture and lives of the community.

To connect the community with the site and its activities, Access Portals are created at multiple sides on the stone wall of the site, which would be covered by jhalis or patterned filters designed by the community.

These Access Portals also would become framed views of the fort from outside the site, connecting the community in a 'transparent privacy', through several viewpoints.

Most of the footprint of the fort is retained and restored so as to give back to the community, to achieve their desire to protect the fort, and yet create continuity with change.

The Village Welfare Center with offices, Anganvadi, Cultural Arts Center and Public Restrooms consist of the built up in the site, mirroring the fort.

The remainig side of the fort becomes a space for Community Kitchen and Eatery.

The Sunday Market also provides a community space for vendors and local crafstmen to participate in trade and festive activities of the village and promote trade of traditional goods and necessities.

Continuum within the Momentum

An ideal learning experience should be an atmosphere, where progress is individually measured without stressing on the pace of it, but through a process that is still dynamic in itself. This could be similar to connecting the dots backwards, where the learning process is measured only by the growth or progress achieved and not by the process. The design project tries to achieve this in program, by a concept of continuum. The sites are connected, through multiple continuums happening between the campus, Church St and MG Road (through Shrungar Shopping Center) by taking MG Road and Church Street as the extremes, via a sense of changes and experiences in activities happening at the sites. “Continuum within the Momentum” is an information center, a gateway to the campus located 300 metres away, next to Empire Restaurant in Church Street.

CONCEPT

In “Continuum within the Momentum”, the spaces are divided such that the project stands on a podium, with a ramp running through, with the podium, the ramps, and the slopes functioning to navigate the crowd.

EMBLEMATIC SECTION

The project’s narrative starts on site from both sides; from MG Road and Church Street, between which, the ramp flows in and out creating an elevated experience. The podium holds within itself a Gallery space for exhibitions and cultural presentation, that allows for a visual experience using state-of-the-art technology, along with public restroom facilities.

The Media Center is a library of art, culture and design, aided with holographic technologies. The intention of “unlearning” becomes the presented message through the Media Center, and by inviting the community to be a part of the unlearning process, the continuum attempts to expand itself out to the spider-web of the society.

The site has three dwelling units for the community, the High Income Group (HIG), the Middle Income Group (MIG) and the Low Income Group (LIG).

Each of these dwelling units are designed based on the lifestyles and character of the community, with the primary intention of creating a dwelling system that connects both inwards, to the families and outwards, to the community.

BY

The site, also being located near the fields and the banks of Tirur River, has been made accessible on all four sides by roads connecting to the Main Road.

High Income Group (HIG) Cluster Middle Income Group (MIG) Cluster Low Income Group (LIG) Cluster Community Area

A housing project for a community of farmers, Green Squares looks into the delicate intimacy between spaces and people that connect them, forming a larger collective of dots in the circle of life through a common identity, and the eventual realisation of a dwelling.

The clusters of these groups are thus scattered and mixed, in order to degroup from a system of income hierarchy.

The plot consists of 6 HIG units, 9 MIG units, 21 LIG units and 2 Community Centres.
