Editor’s welcome

INTERIORS ISSUE Welcome

to the

Interiors Issue in which we demonstrate how this season’s key fashion and furniture trends can work together in perfect harmony in our timeless style shoot from p12. Having worked as an interiors editor for a number of years, researching this issue gave me the ideal excuse to return to my roots and revisit a few of my favourite design-led stores. It’s heartening to see how companies like Elaine Cunningham Interiors and Utility (featured from p22) which I recall writing about early in my career as exciting new start-ups have grown and evolved beyond all recognition even in such a tough economic climate. It’s also encouraging to see that the Northern Design Awards, which helped kick-start the careers of many of the region’s best and brightest designers, are back with a bang this November. We’re very proud to be promoting this year’s awards, and will be rooting for our favourite Liverpool, Cheshire and Wirral-based companies and designers to sweep the boards! Other highlights of this issue include our interiors accessories edit on p10 and seasonal style advice for women on p20 and for men on p36. Plus, on p24 we’ve recreated one of our favourite red carpet looks, the ‘effortless up-do’, with a little help from the experts at Cavern Walks. We’ll be back (ahem bigger and better than ever) next month, having almost certainly gained a few pounds in the name of research while compiling our special Food & Drink Edition, and with more menswear photography from Matt Stansfield. See you next month.

LIZMCCLARNON LIZ GOES ‘LEGALLY BLONDE’

Find out how downing endless cups of coffee, laughing till she cries and dancing till she drops is all in a day’s work for Legally Blonde star Liz McClarnon in this month’s exclusive interview. WORDS: EMMA HILL

W

hen His & Hers spoke to Liz McClarnon, the former Atomic Kitten star was preparing to take to the stage at the Liverpool Empire for the first leg of the ‘Legally Blonde the Musical’ tour. Liz will play divorced manicurist Paulette, starring alongside West End starlet Faye Brooks in the multiple award-winning stage show. Liz confessed: “Rehearsals have been hilarious – even from the first run-through I laughed ‘til I cried, but now we’re getting closer to performing at The Empire for the first time, it’s petrifying! Some really huge A-list stars have played my role before, so it was an honour to be asked, but I am really feeling the pressure.” So how has Liz been preparing herself for the challenge? “There’s been a lot of very energetic dancing involved”, she said, adding: “It should be exhausting, but it’s a young cast and I’ve been picking up on their energy and enthusiasm to the point where I feel like I’m on 16 cups of coffee a day.” Liz admitted that slipping into the role of Paulette, who she describes as: “pure trailer trash, which I love,” has stretched her. However, she’s clearly relished the opportunity to leave her comfort zone, explaining: “Since turning 30, I could so easily have rested on my laurels and just said ‘I was in Atomic Kitten once.’ But I would have been so depressed if I’d gotten stuck in that rut. During her time in Atomic Kitten, Liz travelled the world on sell-out tours, performed for the Queen at Buckingham Palace, and sold 10 million records globally. However, the price she paid for that success was years of being known only as ‘Liz Kitten’. So when the opportunity to take part in Celebrity MasterChef came along, although Liz couldn’t cook, she jumped

HIS&HERS INTERVIEW at the opportunity to learn, ultimately going on to win the show. Since then, Liz has continued to take risks with her career, choosing TV and stage roles that stretch and challenge her and she counts starring in ‘Legally Blonde the Musical’ as one of her greatest challenges to date, saying: “I’m terrified and excited in equal measure and I just can’t wait to get on stage at The Empire. Once that show starts there won’t be a single quiet moment and I promise you it will be completely absorbing.” Sounds like our kind of musical! ‘Legally Blonde the Musical’ is on at The Liverpool Empire from 8th-16th July, www.liverpoolempire.org.uk

WOMEN’S FASHION

STREET SMART

Exam season’s over and the students are out in full fashion force, so our style team took to the streets to spot Liverpool’s most style savvy scholars. WORDS: HESTER BRODIE, PICTURES: JAMES BYRNE

JEMIMA, 18

Student For students, budgeting is a must, so Jemima updates her timeless fashion finds with cheaper accessories from Primark. We loved Jemima’s Topshop blazer, bought three sizes too big for a laidback look.

18

JAYA, 16

Student At His & Hers, we love a good white shirt, and Jaya’s sheer oversized number is perfect for this time of year. Teaming it with highwaisted shorts, boots and a vintage bag, Jaya works pared-down chic at its best!

LAURA, 15

Student If you only feel comfortable getting your ankles out at this time of year, we don’t blame you! Laura rocks the peg-leg trend in these Primark trousers, adding a preppy twist with her Urban Outfitters shirt and man’s blazer.

MEGAN, 18

Student We loved Megan’s lightweight pussy-bow blouse. As the weather’s still on the cool side, she teams hers with a pair of peg-leg trousers and cute Office brogueboots.

KELLY, 31

Student Studying for your Masters can be stressful, so indulging in some retail therapy is a must. We spotted Kelly doing so in style, wearing her fuchsia Zara jeans and gorgeous vintage jacket, accessorised with a Mulberry handbag.

RACHEL, 19

Student Dressing for British summertime is always a challenge. However, if you take a leaf out of Rachel’s book and invest in a white blazer, you can add a lighter feel to your outfit while keeping the warmth in.

I LOVE A GOOD HANDBAG, AND KELLY’S MULBERRY IS NO EXCEPTION. HOWEVER, AS WE CAN’T ALL AFFORD A NEW DESIGNER HANDBAG EVERY SEASON (SIGH!) WE’VE FOUND AN AFFORDABLE ALTERNATIVE. QUILTED TOTE BAG, £135, FRENCH CONNECTION.

ALWAYS REMEMBER, LESS IS MORE, AND A STATEMENT RING CAN BE ENOUGH TO GIVE AN OUTFIT THE LIFT IT NEEDS. SO, AS THE WEATHER IS HOTTING UP, WE DITCHED KELLY’S SCARF IN FAVOUR OF THIS RING - THE PERFECT WAY TO HIGHLIGHT THOSE COLOUR-POP TROUSERS. RING, £10, ACCESSORIZE. TEAMING A DAYTIME OUTFIT WITH A SILK CHIFFON TOP CREATES A LUXE FEEL, AND KELLY IS BANG ON TREND WITH THIS BLACK TOP. WE’VE FOUND A SIMILAR VERSION FROM HIGHSTREET FAVOURITE, TOPSHOP. TOP, £28, TOPSHOP.

S teal her style Style Editor Hester Brodie adores Kelly’s chic summer look, which she’s recreated with high-street gems.

KELLY’S JACKET IS FABULOUS, BUT AS IT’S A VINTAGE FIND WE COULDN’T BRING YOU AN EXACT COPY, SO WE HUNTED HIGH AND LOW TO FIND THIS LITTLE NUMBER FROM EAST. JACKET, £99, EAST.

AS MUCH AS WE LOVED KELLY’S LEOPARD-PRINT PUMPS WE WANTED TO TAKE THE OUTFIT TO THE NEXT LEVEL AND GIVE THE LOOK A GLAM TWIST, SO WE FOUND THESE GORGEOUS GO-WITH-ANYTHING PEEP TOE HEELS FROM DUNE. SHOES, £28, DUNE.

FUCHSIA IS ONE OF THE KEY COLOURS OF THE SEASON, AND WE LOVED KELLY’S CROPS FROM ZARA. WHILST HUNTING FOR THE BEST VERSION FOR YOU, WE STUMBLED ACROSS THESE BEAUTIES IN PRIMARK. TROUSERS, £15, PRIMARK.

HIS&HERS LIFESTYLE

WINNINGWOMEN As this is the interiors issue, it seemed only right to find out more about the women who’ve had the greatest impact on how we present our homes over the past five years. WORDS: HANNAH RAMSAY

KATIE COWIE, UTILITY She’s gone from selling Mr Whippys to cuttingedge designer homeware; meet Katie Cowie, co-founder of Utility. With three stores spread across the city centre, Utility is a Liverpool-based independent retailer of design-led furniture and lighting, as well as jewellery and gifts. Katie’s first venture in 1998, with business partners Richard Skelton & Dick Mawdsley, was Coffee Union, still in existence today. A year later, the trio spotted a gap in the market and opened the first Utility store. Since then the business has continued to grow, “I’m so proud that we’ve built a successful business in our favourite city and have a team of 30 exceptional members of staff who have helped us grow.” It’s not all about furniture, though; as corporate sponsors and trustees of the North West Cancer Research Fund, Katie’s Liverpool fundraising committee organise events throughout the

city centre to raise funds for the charity. What sort of challenges does a company like Utility face? “Continuing to try and grow the business in an extremely tough economic climate”, explains Katie. “It’s about keeping the shops looking fresh and buying new products to continually excite our customers.” She seems to be taking this in her stride, though; the brand has won a string of awards, the latest being ‘Best Gift Retailer in the UK’. There are some grand plans for the future, too. “We are hoping to expand and open stores in London and other cities around the UK,” says Katie. “I also want to help raise the profile of North West Cancer Research Fund within the city centre and continue to raise money for this worthwhile cause.” www.utilitydesign.co.uk

I’M SO PROUD THAT WE’VE BUILT UP A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS IN OUR FAVOURITE CITY. 22

ELAINE CUNNINGHAM & HELEN KAUFMAN

Elaine Cunningham and her right-hand woman Helen Kaufman are amongst the best-known faces on the Northern design scene. They’re trusted by a host of local businesspeople, celebrities and footballers to give the finishing touches to their pads and they work from several chic showrooms in Liverpool. However, Helen laughingly confessed that their early days in business weren’t quite so glamorous, saying: “Elaine used to work from her home when I first started helping her out on a voluntary work placement, and instead of glitz and glamour there was dust and hard-hats on our early site visits!” Helen added: “We got on so well working on a refurbishment of a beauty salon that Elaine offered me a job. The Elaine Cunningham store opened on Aigburth Road and we’ll be celebrating the fifth anniversary of its opening in November! “We then expanded to our destination store on Chapel Street (which is the Elaine Cunningham Home Store and a franchise of BoConcept) and we also have a concession within the Home Quarter.” Helen concluded: “We feel that whenever someone comes into our store, whether it be for a roll of wallpaper or a whole house refurb, they certainly get an experience. “We strive to go the extra mile for our clients and a lot of them have become long-standing

THE ART OF REINVENTION

STEPH’S STORY I got married in May 2011 and Tracey Bell helped me look my best for the big day. Like my mum, I have carried a bit of weight all my life. She was always trying new diets and excersises and so was I. As a preparation for my wedding I was trying to lose weight and tone my stomach. I joined Weigth Watchers and lost 2 and a half stones, but still had a belly I could not get rid of. My wedding dress was very tight fitting so I needed to do something about it. Early in 2011 I went to the launch of Zeltiq’s Coolsculpting in Tracey Bell’s clinic, where one of the participants would get the chance to win a free treatment. My mum passed away 7 years ago after being diagnosed with cancer, and thinking of how well she understood my frustrating battle with weight, I closed my eyes and prayed to her for my name to be called out. When they read my name out loud I could not believe my luck, I was so happy! I felt my mum was looking down on me. I had one Zeltiq procedure done on my stomach, it only took an hour and I have noticed a dramatic change since. Before the treatment I felt a bit nervous but the staff at Tracey Bell were fantastic!! Now I couldn’t be happier, when I got married I felt fabulous in my beautiful wedding dress with my new weight loss and my flat stomach. I was able to show it off on my honeymoon and my new husband was very impressed with the results too. You can see the improvement on the pictures - I feel much more confident now! THE ART OF REINVENTION

ELISE LINDSAY’S STORY Elise is a celebrity trainer and fitness TV presenter, having worked with Coleen Rooney and in GMTV’s This Morning. She also modeled for Nike and contributed to nationwide print media including Close, Ok, Reveal, The news of the World, The Daily Star, The Daily Express and More magazine. With such a fitness-focused life, it is easy to imagine a perfectly toned body and a fabulous physique. “I felt in the top of the world” – Elise says – “but then I started having problems I had to undergo a hernia operation”. After the operation Elise recovered quickly, but she found there was an area of stubborn fat that was bothering her. All her previous excersise routines were not working any longer, and she could not get rid of that flab. That perfectly fit body was very important for her, both personally and professionally, so, after some research she booked a consultation with Dr Tracey Bell. “Elise presented with a small area of localized fat” – Dr Bell said – “The rest of her body was well toned and in very good shape so she was a suitable candidate for Coolsculpting by Zeltiq. According to Elise’s needs, she would only need one single session in one area of her body to achieve satisfactory results. The Zeltiq procedure involves a suction cup attached to the body to freeze fat. The combination of suction and cooling affects fat cells and destroys them. This treatment is FDA approved, and Dr Bell can guarantee a minimum of 20% fat reduction in the treated area. Elise’s Experience: As a personal trainer I enjoy taking care of myself. After my operation I noticed a small area of fat that despite exercise and the correct diet, simply wouldn’t budge. I would definitely recommend Coolsculpting at Tracey Bell’s Clinic. The treatment consisted of extremely cold suction on my abdomen for an hour, and I could notice results after only 2 weeks. Now I’m more body confident than ever. I can’t wait to tell people I train about this procedure.

His&hers social diary

Weavers Door’s Pop-Up Barber Event

The team at Cavern Walks’ menswear boutique, Weavers Door, held a ‘lock-in & locks off’ pop-up event in-store last month. Shoppers left the store with a spring in their step after being treated to complimentary gentleman’s hair-cuts and traditional wet shaves, plus plenty of alcoholic beverages and banter.

His & Hers’ Social Diary: roundup A summary of the month’s events & happenings in brief.

Brazilica’s VIP Launch Party Here at His & Hers we embrace any opportunity to slip on our dancing shoes, so we were rather excited to be invited to the launch of the UK’s largest samba carnival event, Brazilica, at Bem Brasil, Liverpool. Brazilica will be a massive three-day event taking place across Liverpool from Friday 15th-Sunday 17th July. We’re looking forward to seeing the city’s streets filled with music, laughter and, of course, dazzling costumes.

Sassoon’s Evening of Indulgence at the Metquarter His & Hers had a ball at the rather glamorous showcase of Sassoon’s spring/summer collection at the Metquarter, Liverpool. All of the

money raised on the night was donated to Jamie Carragher’s 23 Foundation and guests were treated to mini-makeovers by MAC

before leaving laden down with goodie bags and Krispy Kreme doughnuts. We can’t wait for the next Sassoon event!

The Halooka Lounge Opening

Liverpool’s beautiful people flocked to the launch of the city’s first dedicated electronic shisha bar last month. The Halooka Lounge will invite Liverpool’s cosmopolitan party-goers to experience the delights of the halooka, a healthier redefinition of the shisha pipe, which originated in the Middle East more than 500 years ago. The new venue is situated in the downstairs basement of The Noble House on Brunswick Street.

The TOWIE Cast’s Liverpool Adventure

However you feel about the ascendency of ‘scripted reality’ series (and opinions are divided at His & Hers), there’s no denying that everyone’s been talking about them this month. And the recent arrival of the ‘The Only Way is Essex’ cast in the city for a tour of the Albert Dock, followed by a night of partying at Alma de Cuba certainly set tongues a-wagging.

Jennifer Ellison’s Fame Academy Launch

The Jennifer Ellison Fame Academy landed in the North West with a bang last month. We were entertained by a slick series of performances by freakishly talented youngsters to showcase the skills of the artists represented by the academy. Not sure how we feel about 12-year-olds being quite this talented, though – it doesn’t seem quite fair, somehow!

On the Waterfront Elegantly situated on the forefront of Liverpool’s waterscape, Matou’s floor-to-ceiling windows allow diners to take in the Mersey view while feasting on pan-Asian delights. WORDS: emma griffiths

eated at a cosy table for two, we perused the extensive menu while enjoying one of Matou’s specialities – marvellously mixed, and may I say deadly, cocktails. With a few tips from the wonderful serving staff we made our orders and began our meal with the Matou Platter. A generously proportioned dish of too many naughty things to mention, especially when one is supposedly on a diet, the Platter was so tasty that we scoffed far too much and ended up a tad full. Opting for something a little lighter, I went for the Goong Pau, marinated king prawns on a bed of papaya salad, for my

main course while my partner in crime chose the Korean Duck accompanied by sweet potato wedges. The Goong Pau was beautifully flavoured albeit a little too spicy for me to handle – I combatted the heat with a superb glass of sauvignon blanc in case you were concerned. As he is never one to be defeated by food, my guest selected the passion-fruit cheesecake to conclude his meal. All in the name of research, as always, I managed a sneaky spoonful and I am happy to report that it was divine. The relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff made for a fantastic Friday evening at a waterfront gem. www.matou.co.uk

Theatre for Foodies Featuring an exquisite interior and a menu bursting with seasonal British opulence, The London Carriage Works is another culinary diamond nestled within Liverpool’s Cultural Quarter.

WORDS: emma griffiths

eing an iconic member of Liverpool’s foodie scene with huge involvement in Liverpool’s Food & Drink Festival, I suppose we expect great things from Head Chef, Paul Askew, but it is safe to say that we were not disappointed. Guided to our table in its contemporary dining room, we were handed the latest list of creations from the man himself. Picking out the beetroot and Kidderton Ash goat’s cheese and king scallops with braised pork cheek and morcilla to start,

we were presented with flawless plates of edible beauty – oh, and they made our taste buds sing by the way. Moving on to the main event, we embraced the carnivore within and decided on the sirloin of beef and veal wellington, both served with the most incredible supporting acts. Cooked to perfection and featuring a combination of flavours that worked as well together as Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn, they made us very happy diners indeed. We couldn’t stop there and indulged in a mouth-watering pudding before the final curtain call. Sumptuous. Staggering. Scrumptious. A theatrical experience in itself, The London Carriage Works is well worth a ticket to the next showing. www.thelondoncarriageworks.co.uk

STREET SMART

This month, Style Editor Luke Trevaskis hit the capital for the first part of his London V Liverpool Street Smart. These six southerners will have tough competition against our Liverpool lads. PICTURES & STYLE EDITOR: LUKE TREVASKIS

RYAN, 22

Fashion Management Student, LCF On his way to get a haircut, Ryan was sporting a great off-tothe-gym look. Sticking to an earthy colour palette, his sky-blue shorts and multi-tonal T-shirt look great with his sweatband. Vintage shades, River Island bag, Topman belt and Asos boots ground the look with neutral tones.

BRUNO, 21

Fashion Management Student, LCF Looking every bit a rocker, it doesn’t take much for Bruno to pull off the vest-and-pant look. With Zara jeans, an Urban Outfitters vest, Gucci bag and Armani sunglasses it isn’t any wonder that this clotheshorse has chosen a career in fashion.

GRAZIANO, 24

Sommelier Having been trained in the discipline of goodtaste, it isn’t surprising that Graziano knows what to wear. Known for their love of designer brands, this Italian doesn’t disappoint in a Ralph Lauren shirt, Brunello Cuchinelli trousers, Hogan shoes, Burberry belt and Ray-Bans.

GIORGIO, 22

Sales Assistant Working in retail, Giorgio prefers a more understated and classic look when not on-the-clock. His GAP shorts and Tommy Hilfiger shirt pair well with his Zara belt and Gucci sunglasses – a style that is often found lining the stradas of Milan.

JAKE, 23

Fashion Designer Giving London a lesson in pairing pastels, Jake works his American Apparel shorts, Uniqlo shirt and Zara jumper down to every last thread. Accessorising with Zara shoes and a Uniqlo belt, this young fashion designer of tomorrow certainly knows how to own his look and it won’t be long before we see his collections gracing LFW.

ADAM, 22

Fashion Designer With a cool swagger, Adam was hard not to notice as he passed through Soho. Although a man of few words, with his Topman vest and jacket, Coss shorts and Office shoes, he took it all in his stride as his mien assured me I would one day be wearing his designs.

Luke’s Looks If you are a regular reader of Luke’s Looks then you will have grasped the concept of gradually building a versatile wardrobe. I always advise readers to shop in the spring/summer sales for pieces that they may need in autumn/ winter. This allows you to look into the future and pick up key pieces well in advance of any upcoming trend. Menswear trends that will be big this autumn/winter are over-patterned knitwear, overcoats and layered scarves.
