• Playground More than 35% of the whole school ground are made with the playground for our lovely kids. One huge soccer field, cute mini soccer field and two playgrounds with slide, swing, and a sandbox.

• Cafeteria What is today’s lunch?

Every student has listened or asked this question at least once in school days.

Cafeteria serves over 500 more students starting to every Monday to Friday; not only that, the school serves every day are very various and different meal set for international students.

School’s best chefs are confident to their food qualities.

Indoor Games This year Ms.McGuire and some childen from the game three to five and decide to create an afterschool activity which is based on play cards and other indoor fun games. The activity is every Monday. The main reason why this After School Activity was made is so that kids can lean how to play a variety of games that do not require a laptop.

Ms.McGuire says, “I’m very happy to be part of this After School Activity, and I’m very cofident that the kids are going to learn many different ways of playing games not on a computer”.

The kids are enjoying this activity very much, and they are trying to stimulate more people into coming to the activity so they can expand.

The Math Club

(For All Those People Who love Math And Want To Improve Their Grade)

• Interviewing The Leader (Min Kim) Q: Why did you create the Math Club?

A: “I was in the Math Club last year and wanted to create another one this year. Plus, Mr. Riege gave us the oppurtunity to take the AMC tests and I thought it would be a good idea to prepare for it in the Math Club.”

Q: Do you do math out of obligation or fun?

A: “Out of fun, when I solve problems that are really difficult or other people can’t solve then it feels quite nice” Q: When you made this club, did you expect this many members to join?

A: “No. I was expecting 4-5 people when I first made the club. Luckily, I was able to gather a lot of people after Mr. Riege and I advertised the advnatages of joining this club.”

• The Details When Wednesdays 3:15 - 4:15 Where Library What “The main advantage of our club is that every member in our club can share ideas and teach each other. Even when someone has trouble solving a math problem, we can share the ideas and eventually solve it. Also, we could prepare for the AMC tests by doing this. AMC test is a really good opportunity to show one’s ability to solve math problems and build problem-solving skills and mathematical knowledge.” - Min Kim

by Marvel. It is fun and interesting, and the best part of all it includes magic. Doctor Strange is about a doctor who goes on a journey of healing, but then stumbled upon the world of the mystic arts. Doctor Strange is played by Benedict Cumberbatch IMBD: 7.9/10 (PG-13) • Man with a Plan Man with a Plan is a TV- Show for all ages, and it has a really classic storyline of a Dad finding out how hard parenting is. His wife has gone back to work and he is left to deal with his kids for the first time.

IMBD: 6.4/10 • Home Alone Since it is the festive seasons, a classic winter movie is Home Alone.

It brings back Christmas memories, and if you haven’t watched it. I highly recommend you do!!!

The past month we had the singles’ day, which is also known as 11.11. People say that singles day started in the early 90s.

Singles day is a day for singles or bachelors to party with their single friends.

The story starts with just a simple suggestion to Jesse about playing some music in Teachers Appreciation Day with a few more students. They soon made a band and as time passed, some left and many joined.

{ MIDDLE SCHOOL SOCCER } On Saturday 19 November 2016, HIS students participated in the CISSA Soccer tournament hosted by Shanghai American School, Pudong.

Both girls team and boys team displayed great performance this day. All athletes showed a huge improvement in skills in terms of accuracy and communication. Regardless of the hot weather, everyone demonstrated great commitment to the game.

HIS 2016 Dragon Cup Basketball Boys The boys team had 8 players only. The rest of the team were seniors and they had to take the IB test. We played SCIS Hongqiao and SCIS Pudong. We lost against SCIS Pudong and won against SCIS Hongqiao. SCIS Pudong won the Dragon Cup. It was a friendly match between the 3 schools.

Every year for any varsity sports teams there is Dragon Cup. This tournament is based on sportsmanship.

Girls Girls team had 7 players. They lost against SCIS Hongqiao and SCIS Pudong. The SCIS Pudong girls team won the Dragon Cup too. The girls team played hard and tried their best, but the other teams were more experienced.

Movember What is Movember Foundation?

The Movember Foundation helps with sickness male men interfere with. They are the only global scale charity that exists to help men with their health. The most common issue men face is prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention and Movember foundation is there to help them.

How does Movember raise money?

Movember raises money in a very unique way. People who grows beard registers in the foundation.

People around the world pays money to the registered people and shaves their beard. The money is collected by the foundation and helps sick man recover and have a healthy life Brian Park (Jin-Woo)

Mr. HIS

Mr. HIS is our school Movember team. There were 16 people who participated and consisted teachers and parents from HIS. In total they raised $270 which is a big accomplisment.

MEET MS. LIN When did you start your career?

I started my teaching career in 2007 in Hangzhou International School. This is my 10th year teaching in HIS.

What do you want to be doing in five years?

I would be traveling with my family. I am currently working on my master’s degree, so I don’t have any chance to spend time with my family.

What is your favorite part of your career?

I like how my students are from different countries. It is very different than local schools. Not only my students learn Chinese from me, but I also learn different cultures from them.

Have you ever thought about a different career?

Yes, but it was still related to teaching. I love to choreograph different dances, so I thought of being a dance teacher.

Wenzhou (温州) is my hometown. It’s quite far away from Hangzhou. It is 3 hour train ride from here. I grew there and studied there. For my university, I went to 浙江师范大学, which is a teacher school. My major was Education. I am currently working on my Master’s Degree in the same school. My brother is also a teacher. He is a professor in a university, so he might have influenced me to become a teacher also.

Lower School Teacher Interview Ms. Fiona McGuire, Grade 5 Teacher

How do you see the role of a teacher in the learning process?

“Really, we just try to give them opportunities that they can then take on board. You know, new ideas that they can hopefully transfer into other areas of their lives”.

Why did you come to this school?

Ms. McGuire said she was invited to work here by Mr. van der Eyken because of her work experience in IPC. The IPC is a lower school curriculum that includes all subjects except Literacy and Math. The students have a goal they need to achieve during the unit period.

Any words of wisdom for your students?

“Just do your best, give everything a good try, and get out of your comfort zone. ” Zoe Frattini

What is the greatest achievement you have made in your career?

Ms. McGuire has been a teacher for the past 30 years, and during this time the only challenge she faced was the change in technology since there are no new ideas in teaching.

She was able to keep up with the technology and that was a great achievement for her.
