It is August. The kids are headed back to school and summer is winding down; but there is still loads of fun to be had in Charleston. This year, August has five Fridays, and that means that Charleston’s favorite outdoor concert series, “Live on the Levee” has five free concerts at Haddad Riverfront Park! Speaking of free outdoor concerts, be sure to check out the Brown Bag Concert at the United Bank Plaza during lunchtime on Aug. 8. “Food Truck Friday” ends its summer run on Aug. 3 at the Ronald McDonald Charities Building on Pennsylvania Ave. You won’t want to miss Capitol Market’s multi-course farm to fork event. You can dine on wonderful fare created by Chef Paul Smith with local ingredients. And speaking of Capitol Market, you can help Manna Meal by purchasing green beans from the market and participating in a bean-stringing event with live music and raffle giveaways!
and other activities will take place on Magic Island. The Charleston Parkrun continues every Saturday in August. This free 5-K run is a great way to get healthier with your friends and family. One of the most highly anticipated events each summer is the YWCA’s women’s only fundraiser benefiting their Resolve Program. This is a “PARTY with a PURPOSE”: to end domestic violence. Over 1,000 local ladies attend this event to have a terrific evening with friends and help to support other women who are less fortunate. The $150 admission goes toward this program. There is still a lot to enjoy along the Kanawha River, you can continue to dine al-fresco, and then get ready for some football. Fall will be here before we know it! Cheers!

...at the Greyhound Bus Station
There is a park in the middle of downtown Charleston. Slack Plaza, situated midway between the Town Center Mall and Capitol Street, was designed with the hope it would be a convenient point where people could enjoy their lunch break or attend outdoor community events. But before there was Slack Plaza, there was the Atlantic Greyhound Bus Lines Terminal. Many may not even remember the bus station because the terminal was demolished in the 1980’s. One of Charleston’s most outstanding examples of Art Deco architecture fell to the wrecking ball, taking with it a piece of the city’s history. The ground was broken for the station on June 15, 1936. The terminal was constructed by H.B. Agsten and Son. It was designed, and the construction supervised by Atlantic Greyhound architect George D. Brown. Brown was based for a time in Charleston, where he designed not only the Charleston Terminal, but also the Huntington, West Virginia terminal, and several others. The terminals of his design in Columbia, South Carolina, and Savannah, Georgia are listed on the National Register of Historic Places for their place in architectural history. The terminal opened at 9:00 am, January 30, 1937. The decorative glass block on the structures face was not in place at the opening due to a labor strike. Not hindered by a cosmetic issue, the terminal was fully opened for business. In addition to Atlantic Greyhound bus service, the terminal also accommodated buses from the Logan Williamson Bus Company and the West Virginia Transportation Company. The enclosed concourse held twelve buses, and the adjacent lot could accommodate a dozen more. The concourse provided the passengers and their luggage protection from inclement weather. Passengers were greeted at the entry by a neon sign featuring a ‘lifein-action’ greyhound that appeared to be running as the neon lights shifted patterns. The distinctive sign was made by Cary Systems, the M. Lynne Squires is the author of the award-winning book Letters to My Son - Reflections of Appalachia at Mid-Century, as well as Mid-Century Recipes from Cocktails to Comfort Food, and Writers on Writing. premier neon sign producer in Charleston. The interior design featured an inlaid terrazzo ﬂoor, black columns, green walls, and a cream-colored ceiling. A glass ‘skylight’ concealed the bulbs for the rooms primary lighting. The staircase descended to the lower level that housed a men’s lounge and lavatory and ascended to the women’s restroom and lavatory. Both areas were furnished in tubular Art Deco chairs, tables and sofas. Tiled showers were available in these traveler rest areas, complete with maid and valet service. At the time the Charleston terminal was built, the president of the Atlantic Greyhound lines was Arthur M. Hill who hailed from Charleston. Hill worked in a lumber mill, several coal mines, and two banks before founding the Midland Trail Transit company. He was also president of the Charleston Transit company and served for 12 years as the president of the National Association of Motor Bus Operators. The luxurious, state-of-the-art terminal quickly became a hub of activity on Summers Street. Boasting a café with both counter seating and tables, there was also a barber shop, shoe shine stand, and telegraph station. Townspeople as well as travelers utilized these services. Bus travel opened the continental United States to travelers in the early to mid-20th century. Taking a bus then was as commonplace as catching a plane is today. But as car ownership increased, bus travel decreased. By the mid-seventies, bus travel had dropped dramatically. The Charleston terminal was moved to another location a few blocks away in the 1980’s. While still serving the basic needs of travelers, the amenities of the bus station shrank to a ticket counter and a few vending machines. Next month, we look back at the Levee and its place in the city’s history.

CHANGE IS SCARY, no one particularly likes change. When dealing with your home, you have to think of it as “good scary”, it can be a big expense and a bigger problem if you hate it. But do you really hate it? Or is it that you’re just not used to the change, the newness of it. Just keep that in mind that change actually means change. I think that it sometimes surprises people when things are new and different from the old way that they’re used to. One of the easiest changes is switching out your pillows on your sofa. If you are intimidated by color this is an excellent way to try some new trendy colors (think coral, citron yellow, or turquoise) on your sofa. It won’t be a big ﬁnancial commitment and will give you the chance to live with a new color and see if you love it enough to commit to a piece of furniture next time. Challenging your comfort level with a bold pattern like an animal print or geometric in a great color can make that old blah couch come to life.

This is a great task to accomplish with a designer or trusted friend. It’s kind of like cleaning out your closet, you have that one friend who will really tell you, “no, those denim mom shorts do not work and no one will ever want to see you in them again.” That’s the girl you want to tell you if your rug looks shabby or chic.
Accessories are another good thing to change up. Again, you can make a huge impact in your house without spending a ton of money. We all get used to our things in their place, and love them, but maybe moving items around will give a piece a breath of fresh air. I regularly clear out client’s accessories and wall art and pile everything in the dining room and then “shop” those pieces before hitting the stores. Maybe the bird prints that have
I have a friend whose family has had a cabin on a lake in the woods for decades. It’s very difﬁcult to get to and even worse to have work done on it. The original wood ﬂoor to this beloved vacation home had been neglected to the point that they were not safe and had to be replaced and my dear friend was beside herself with the thought that the old wood ﬂoors that three generations of her family had tread upon for decades would face demolition. There was no consoling her, there was a change in the air and that’s all it took to get her into a full on tail spin. I helped her pick new wood that looks old (but not the same “old”), almost (but not quite) the same color. Fast forward a year, the “new old” ﬂoors are installed and she arrives for her summer vacation- after a few days of moping around recalling “the good old days” (and wondering where the old wood was so she could make picture frames out of it- she wants to make frames out of everything) she promptly forgot about hating the new ﬂoors and moved on about enjoying her vacation. It only took two days to adjust, but just to be on the safe side we never, ever discuss the new ﬂoor “situation” for fear of reopening old wounds.

when he busted me right away and with considerable commentary about how much the new mirror was hated. Granted, the old one was from his grandparents’ house but in my defense just because something is old doesn’t mean it’s an ”antique” worth keeping in your powder room. I said “ok, I’ll put the old one back.” Then I waited until he brought the subject up again a few days later. “Oops, I forgot, I’ll do it over the weekend.” And then I waited until, right on schedule a few days after that, my sweet, adorable husband said, “wait, I kind
of like that mirror there” and just like that, the balance was restored in the house and now that old mirror hangs over his dresser in our bedroom and everybody is happy. He’s adorable to think he actually had any say in the situation. So the point of this tale is don’t be afraid of change, give yourself time to really see if you truly dislike something. Or could it be you are just not used to the new modern crystal sticks that now adorn your mantle. Give new changes a few weeks to sink in. I challenge my clients to live with something new they swear they don’t like for a month. If after that time they’re not loving it, we go back to the drawing board. Generally, they end up happy with the change. Remember, at the end of the day you’re the one that lives in your house, not your designer or your friend that’s helping you redecorate. Your home should always be a reﬂection of your family and lifestyle, incorporating new ideas with your style is easy to achieve with a little patience and creativity.
My adorable husband is another change hater. Generally, I just change things around the house and my daughter and I make wagers on how long it will take him to actually notice the change, then how long he will say he hates it until he says he likes it. So, when I decided to remove an old mirror in our powder room and put a new one up I was ﬂoored
