Happening Around Town

Charleston really starts to bloom in April! It is finally springtime and the whole town comes alive with the joy and excitement that warmer weather brings. Capitol Market’s outdoor pavilion is quickly filling up with plants and flowers for all the gardeners. Local restaurants with outdoor dining are setting up their al fresco areas. It is so much fun simply strolling around town! The newly remodeled Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center (the CCCC) is the venue for two terrific concerts this month. The Grammy Award winning Christian music group, Casting Crowns, performs their “Only Jesus Tour” the 5th of this month. The following Friday, Travis Tritt AND the Marshal Tucker Band perform together with several special guests, promising an unforgettable evening of country music. On Apr. 14th, another Grammy Award winning band comes to Charleston when the Doobie Brothers return to the Clay Center. 48 years after their debut album, the are still connecting to fans all over the country!

Once more, Broadway comes to Charleston when the huge-hearted, highheeled hit “Kinky Boots” performs at the Clay Center. FOOTMAD, Friends of Old Time Music and Dance, will delight the town with two events this month. They will have a concert at their usual venue, the WV Culture Center, then they will hold a community dance event at a new location for Charleston entertainment, The Bakery. The Bakery, on Bigley Avenue, is the old Purity Maid building which has been converted to an “all ages venue”. It is wonderful to see old buildings being refurbished and repurposed. The Charleston community is filled with many generous folks. There are always charitable events being sponsored to help others in the community. This month, there is a style show benefiting the Sojourner’s Shelter, a 5-K race to help combat racism, and the annual Charleston Scholarship Dinner to aid in providing scholarships to deserving students at West Virginia University.

There is also a lot of local entertainment every week. The Bridge Road Bistro and the Bluegrass Kitchen are two regular venues for weekly music and open mic opportunities.

The Christian, Jewish, and Islam communities all celebrate holidays this month. Most students have a week of spring break. Charleston is the perfect place for a family fun day trip, a hike along the Kanawha River or through Kanawha State Forest, or shopping at Town Center.

...at Charleston's Hospitals

Decades before Charleston Area Medical Center became the 3rd largest employer in West Virginia, and years before St. Francis joined forces with Thomas Health Systems, numerous hospitals served the residents of Charleston. Here’s a timeline of Charleston’s health care history. Late 1880’s - Charleston General Hospital began in the late 1880s on Elmwood Avenue. In 1904, the hospital moved in front of the Spring Hill Cemetery. Originally called Thomas Hospital and Sanitarium, it became Charleston General Hospital. In 1924, it moved to a new facility on Brooks Street. Charleston General combined with the well-known Sheltering Arms Hospital in Hansford, WV, an 800-bed facility and nursing school. The nursing school and dormitory were located across the street from the hospital. 1904 - The Barber Sanatorium was constructed on Virginia Street by Dr. Timothy L. Barber Sr., a public health officer and smallpox doctor. In 1909, Dr. Hugh G. Nicholson leased the tiny 20-bed facility, adding a nursing school. In 1912, Dr. George A. MacQueen assumed the lease and changed the name to the Barber Sanatorium and Hospital. 1907- McMillan Hospital Dr. William A. McMillan developed his hospital in a frame house at the corner of Elmwood Avenue and Morris Street. McMillan Hospital was soon moved two blocks south into a modern structure. In 1971, McMillan became a part of Charleston General Hospital, and its buildings demolished in 1976. 1914 - St. Francis Hospital was founded by a WV Roman Catholic bishop. The Laidley estate on Laidley Street was purchased and renovations to create a hospital began. Franciscan Sisters from New York managed the hospital, which opened January 15, 1914, with about 30 beds. A larger hospital was built, opening on January 24, 1917, with 71 beds, operating rooms, x-ray machines, laboratories, and a chapel. St. Francis Nursing School was opened in 1915 and graduated hundreds of nurses until its closing in 1961. After many renovations, additions, and the removal of the 1917 building, St. Francis grew into a medical complex offering hospital services and clinics. After changing owners three times, the hospital is owned by Thomas Health Systems. 1921 - Mountain State Hospital was founded by local physicians, a pharmacist, and the state attorney general who purchased a residence on Squires’ new book Looking Back at Charleston is a compilation of 24 essays and color photos from her column and is available on Amazon. Virginia Street. The 120-bed hospital had two operating rooms, a delivery room, and a nursing school. Mountain State merged with Charleston Memorial Hospital in 1969 and closed in 1971. It was used as a nursing home before closing in 1999. In 2005, the property was purchased by Eye and Ear Clinic and demolished for a parking lot. 1923 - Staats Hospital converted the second and third floor of a 4-story west side building into a 67-bed hospital. Staats took over the entire building in 1935. The hospital continued to serve the West Side and surrounding areas until the hospital closed in the early 1980s when St. Francis Hospital opened the St. Francis West Health Care facility and offices. 1925 - Kanawha Valley Hospital - The Barber Sanatorium and Hospital merged with nearby Grace Hospital and incorporated as Kanawha Valley Hospital and Sanatorium. In 1925, a new corporation, Kanawha Valley Hospital, bought the facility and a nursing school added. In 1959, it was sold to Kanawha Valley Memorial Hospital, a nonprofit corporation. Existing at the original Virginia Street site until 1982, it moved to a new 170-bed facility on Pennsylvania Avenue. The hospital merged with Charleston Area Medical Center in 1986. In June 1988, the hospital became Women and Children’s Hospital. 1951 - Charleston Memorial Hospital built as a 129-bed facility, but by 1974, the original plan of 440 beds and 58 bassinets was complete. It was constructed on the site of a former golf course in Kanawha City. Consolidation of two rivals, Charleston General and Charleston Memorial, was urged by physicians and staff. On January 1, 1972, Charleston Area Medical Center was born. 1955 - Highland Hospital – Founded by local doctors, Highland Hospital offered behavioral health treatment for children, adolescents, and adults from all 55 counties in West Virginia. Services offered included psychiatric inpatient and outpatient treatment, detox and substance abuse treatment, and primary care. Next month, Looking Back explores the history of the Elm Grove house. Downtown Greenville has many great places to shop (over 100 in total), including Anthropologie, Bluemercury, and Beija Flor. Perhaps the most popular store is Mast General, a 100 year-old department store and outfitter with clothing, souvenirs, and an amazing retro toy/candy store in the back.

While browsing downtown Greenville’s shops, sample local rum from Dark Corner Distillery or read the plaques on the downtown statues sharing insight about locals who did special things. Visiting the M. Judson Booksellers is a must. It’s one of the prettiest independent bookstores I’ve seen in the whole country! You can find whatever you are looking for in this ten-block stretch of downtown. Don’t miss the sidewalk etched quotes around the bookstore block.

or you can follow the winding riverfront through town to Liberty Bridge for the best vantage points. The waterfall is just as beautiful at night so you may want to visit twice.

A SPECIAL EXPERIENCE The BMW Performance Center is outside of downtown Greenville. Here, you will see where BMWs are built, sold, and you can even attend the many driving programs offered. Courses to learn the physics of driving include off-road, interstate braking from 70 mph, and wet skid pad to name a few. Children will adore the Mice on Main scavenger hunt. You can download clues at the Visit Greenville SC website to help find the nine bronze mice hidden high and low around town. Kids will also enjoy stopping in O.P. Taylor’s toy store and wandering around the Children’s Museum of the Upstate (one of the ten largest children’s museums in the world). Another fun option for the whole family is to visit the Greenville Zoo, which only takes about 90 minutes to stroll through.

Sinking your teeth into Greenville is going to be one of the best parts of your trip. Biscuit Head’s breakfast is a culinary delight. For those seeking American fare for lunch or dinner, my pick is Nose Dive, a cool restaurant with a light-up bar and swanky vibe. For dinner, try Mediterranean fare at Abanico or have Mexican at Willy’s Tacos. Oak and Honey has spectacular appetizers, like charcuterie boards, wings, and truffle fries.

Check out the local art scene at the Greenville County Museum of Art or taking in a live performance at The Peace Center (Greenville’s performing arts concert hall and amphitheater). You can catch a baseball game right in the heart of downtown. See the Greenville Drive (a Minor League Class A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox) play at Fluor Field (modeled after Fenway Park). Get outdoors and bike or walk the 20-mile Swamp Rabbit Trail that leads to nearby Travelers Rest, a popular town outside of Greenville. Perhaps the most surprising part of Greenville is Reedy River Falls. Did you know that a gorgeous waterfall is nestled in the heart of downtown Greenville? Signs will point you to it at Falls Park

The newest hotspot in town is the dual Marriott property featuring a Springfield Suites and Residence Inn. Stylish and contemporary, with a pool featuring low-water lounge chairs, this dynamic hotel is well worth a visit. The property is amazing, featuring hanging wicker chairs in the lobby, nooks and crannies for quiet conversation, comfy beds, and spacious rooms. Bikes are available for hitting the biking/hiking trails or just exploring the town. Embassy Suites is another great choice in downtown Greenville. The huge property has incredible views of the city and a waterway that runs through the city from its rooftop restaurant and lounge. Both hotels are within walking distance to most things you will want to see in Greenville.
