Happening Around Town

October is a much-loved time of year. It has always been like that.

Even before pumpkin-spice lattes! The trees turn a beautiful variety of colors and the weather is perfect. Not too hot and not too cold.

Then, in Charleston, the month begins with the popular “Boulevard Rod Run & Doo Wop”, which is WV’s largest 5 day Motorcar Festival.

Other family friendly events throughout the month include the WV Book Festival at the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center (CC&CC) and the FestivALL Fall activities.

There are three entertaining fundraisers this month. The “Market Mixer Fundraiser” is a benefit for the non-profit Capitol Market.

The “One Club Golf Scramble” assists the Appalachian Children’s Chorus, and Kanawha Pastoral Counseling Center’s 26th annual fundraising event currently known as “Friday Night Live” helps provide counseling throughout the area. These are enjoyable ways to generously support our community.

The “Charleston WV parkrun” continues every Saturday morning, beginning at 9am this month. This free 5K run/walk begins and ends at Magic Island. Kanawha State Forest is the site for a colorful

hike Oct. 12. This 4.5-mile trek through the forest begins at the Camp Kanawha parking lot.

The 2019 WV Book Festival features the popular author James Patterson, among several other well-known writers. There are also several writing workshops, discussions, and lectures. This is always a much-anticipated event in town. The CC&CC is also the venue for a fun murder mystery dinner, “Belles Bourbon & Belladonna” and for the spooky Children’s Theatre of Charleston presentation of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”.

“ZZ Top” comes to the Clay Center as the band celebrates 50 years of performing. The band holds the undisputed record of being the longest major rock band with the original personnel intact. This concert promises to be a sellout and enormously entertaining.

With so much happening this month, time will surely fly! Next up, Thanksgiving!!!

he Daniel Boone Hotel no longer has a star studded guest list.

It no longer hosts heads of state, rock stars or honeymooning newlyweds. The halls no longer echo with the maids’ chatter, and the ballroom doesn’t seat ladies awaiting a dance partner. The former crown jewel of the capital city, Charleston’s Daniel Boone otel, is now an office building.

entertainment greats visiting town and staying the Daniel Boone were Victor Borge, Gene Autry, Bob ope, ebbie eynolds, Jack Dempsey, Guy Lombardo, and the Lawrence Welk Orchestra.

Some say the most famous hotel guest was Elvis Presley who visited Charleston in 1975, with his entourage occupying a whopping sixty three rooms, including the penthouse suite.

Today people come and go visiting a dentist, attorneys, and other professionals that are spread out from the mezzanine to the penthouse. he lobby and the double mezzanine floors maintain a few vestiges of the hotels former splendor; the staircase to the mezzanine floors, the registration desk, and the intricate hexagon tile work on the floor below the lobby entrance, and several original light fixtures. he original elevator doors still flank the gleaming brass ail box. A sign above each of the doors remind people that the lifts are no longer working elevators.

The ballroom is possibly the least changed section of the hotel. owever, the mezzanine, once open to the ballroom floor below is now walled over, with only the front of the supporting pillars left in view. Most of the lighting is original, as is the mahogany wainscoting. One can imagine wedding receptions held there, with the bride tossing her bou uet over the mezzanine railing.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, the former historic hotel was built between 1 2 and 1 2 , then expand ed in 1936 and again in 1949 to provide a total of four hundred and sixty five rooms, a ballroom and three parlor meeting rooms.

A Classical evival style ten story blond brick, the building boasts an unusual two-story mezzanine and a penthouse. The entire building was an exemplary example of first class hotel architec ture of the 1920s.

The Daniel Boone was built on the corner of Capital and Washington treets, the previous site of the states first governor s mansion.

After the nearby Capitol building was destroyed by fire in 1 21, a temporary Capitol was erected where the hotel would later stand.

Intended to be a temporary structure, the “paste-board Capitol”, as it was often called, was built in just forty-two days. In 1927 it also caught fire and burned to the ground.

n 1 1, the aniel Boone otel closed. After renovation and re modeling the building was reopened in 1984 as 405 Capitol Street, an office building with fountains, a spacious atrium, two glass en closed elevators and a 30-foot indoor waterfall. he exterior of the aniel Boone otel remains virtually un changed. The awnings over both entrances are original and the fine detail work remains intact. he interior has a nod to its stately past, but primarily the 1980’s renovation takes visual precedence.

A massive multi level garden area stands in the shadow of a two story waterfall, overtaking much of the former lobby. The center of the building is gone, giving way to floors of balconies edging the offices where hotel rooms and suites once stood. he modern flavor of the remodeled hotels interior is lovely with an Art eco flare. But the glimpses of yesteryear leave a melan choly feeling. The memories of the Daniel Boone Hotel linger, vying to hold their footing as the grand lady of the city, while time marches on.

The hotel was conceived by a group of Charleston citizens known as the Community Hotel Corporation with the goal of providing a fitting location for hosting politicians and visiting dignitaries to the capital city. Wehrle B. Geary, a Roane County entrepreneur and developer of the Diamond Department Store spearheaded the building of the Daniel Boone.

When the Capitol moved to Charleston’s east end, the new hotel served as the unofficial head uarters of est Virginias state gov ernment. The Daniel Boone housed many state legislators during the day legislative sessions. ost of Charlestons ban uets and conventions were held there. One year saw the hotel hosting a convention of little people, or midgets as they were called at the time, with over eight hundred in attendance.

A number of prominent people stayed at the aniel Boone, in cluding leanor oosevelt, Admiral ichard Byrd, residents er bert oover, and arry ruman. Vice resident yndon Johnson, and en. and rs. John . ennedy also slept there. Among the

Take a 15-minute drive to the neighboring town of Clayton, also in Johnston County, where you can take a self-guided sculpture trail with impressive artworks. Then do some shopping at Auntie’s Cottage, Bexley House, and ReJoyce Gifts, all darling independent shops.

You have to eat barbecue when you are in North Carolina and some of the best can be found at Redneck BBQ Lab in McGee’s Crossroads. Choose between St. Louis ribs, burnt ends, brisket, pulled pork, or smoked turkey, all which pair well with the collard greens and jalapeño mac & cheese sides. Save room for a Dole Pineapple Whip for dessert, the only place I’ve seen them outside of Disney.

For dessert, pop into Sherry’s Signature Cheesecakes, a darling dessert-only restaurant in downtown Clayton with a variety of homemade options. Some tantalizing flavors include Maple Brown Sugar Bacon, Peaches & Cream, and Turtle Cheesecake. Cold Stone Creamery (ice cream) and Hills of Snow (flavored snowballs) are other choices for those wanting something lighter or more refreshing.

Rocker Imperial Pumpkin Porter or one of their mainstays such as Thrilla in Vanilla or Wilma’s Wandering EyePA. Tours of Double Barley are available on Saturdays at 2 PM. The Simple Twist Taproom in the heart of downtown Smithfield is another cool place to visit for a good selection of brews and craft sodas, too.
