BENEFITS OF ENERGY EFFICIENT WINDOWS

The purpose for windows is to provide natural light, natural ventilation, and views to the outside. The benefits of high performance windows allows for nergy ost avings, mproved omfort, ess ondensation, ncreased ight iew, educed ading, and ower osts.

MEASURING PERFORMANCE eat flows through a window assembly in three ways conduction, convection and radiation. hen these basic mechanisms of heat transfer are applied to the performance of windows, they interact in comple ways. Three energy performance characteristics of windows are used to portray how energy is transferred and are the basis for how energy performance is uantified.

• INSULATING VALUE. hen there is a temperature difference between inside and outside, heat is lost or gained through the window frame and glazing by the combined effects of conduction, convection, and radiation. This is indicated in terms of the -factor of a window assembly.

• HEAT GAIN FROM SOLAR RADIATION. egardless of outside temperature, heat can be gained through windows by direct or indirect solar radiation. The ability to control this heat gain through windows is measured in terms of the olar eat ain oefficient ( ) of the window.

• INFILTRATION. eat loss and gain also occur by ir eakage through cracks in the window assembly.

This effect is measured in terms of the amount of air (cubic feet or cubic meters per minute) that passes through a unit area of window (s uare foot or s uare meter) under given pressure conditions. n reality, infiltration varies slightly with wind-driven and temperature-driven pressure changes.

TECHNOLOGIES The overall performance of any window is determined by the complete window assembly. ...at THE glenwood mansion

In 1857, Laidley sold the home to Judge George W. Summers. Summers served in the Virginia Legislature in 1830-31 and 1834-35. In 1852, he was elected Judge of the 18th circuit court where he presided for six years. Later, he devoted himself to his legal practice and maintaining Glenwood, the family home. His wife, Amacetta Laidley Summers, died in 1867. Upon the patriarch Summer’s death in 1868, the house passed on to his surviving heir Lewis Summers II, named for his late brother.

The home stayed in the family, and in 1954 was restored for Lucy and Elizabeth Quarrier, descendants of the late judge. The restoration was undertaken with the goal of maintaining as much of the original workmanship as possible. The front door’s side and top glass transoms saw the addition of new glass, made by Blenko Glass in Milton, West Virginia. The main house, and the smaller house to the rear, remain in excellent condition today, with much of the artwork and furnishings from the 1800’s still in place.

HE GLENWOOD MANSION is one of the oldest, and perhaps best preserved homes in the Kanawha Valley. Located on Orchard Street and Park Avenue, high up on the west side hill, the home originally was surrounded by vast acreage and accessed by a winding road, Parkersburg Turnpike, which is now West Washington Street.

James Madison Laidley was a prominent banker, lawyer, newspaper founder and editor, and was involved in salt manufacturing. He also was the owner of Glenwood mansion on Charleston’s west side. He bought 366 acres from George Washington’s sister’s granddaughter and named the acreage Glenwood. He chose Glenwood because of its location near a rocky glen carved out by a stream that tumbled down to the base of the mountain, following a path that is now Mathews Avenue.

The name of the estate was carried on by the naming of Glenwood Avenue and Glenwood School.

Glenwood was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Now owned by the Historic Glenwood Foundation, Inc., the home is no longer a residence and closed to the public. The foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of Glenwood, seeking to “accomplish its mission by preserving, interpreting, collection, and performing, facilitation or sponsoring research relating to the property and its occupants.”

From time to time events and tours are held at Glenwood, giving today’s generation an opportunity to glimpse into Charleston’s past.

Next month, Looking Back will profile the Basilica of the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in downtown Charleston.

One of only a handful of original plantations on the west side of the Elk River, Glenwood is a two-story, gable roofed brick home in the Greek Revival style. Commissioned to be built in 1852 by English immigrant builder and stonemason William Preston, the home was constructed of local materials including both black and white walnut timber from the vast estate, bricks fired locally, and sandstone quarried near the house. The sandstone was used extensively, including the front steps and a section of the basement cellar which is cut from solid sandstone.

The outer walls are eighteen inches thick and the interior walls are fourteen inches thick. The large main rooms are each twenty feet square. The windows rise nearly to the twelve foot ceiling height beginning above the eleven inch tall baseboards.

The home’s wood interior includes random-width pine flooring, solid walnut doors and poplar window casings. The single story portico, as well as the windows and other design treatments are finely detailed, and remain intact today.

Thanksgiving Desserts Pumpkin Mousse INGREDIENTS

PREPARATION

5 large egg yolks 1 c. sugar 3½ c. heavy cream 15 oz. Canned pumpkin 2 tsp. vanilla extract 1½ tsp. ground cinnamon ½ tsp. ground ginger ¼ tsp. ground nutmeg ¼ tsp. salt 2 tbsp. dark rum 1 tsp. powdered gelatin 3 oz. shaved dark chocolate

• Fill a large bowl halfway with ice water and set aside.

• Whisk the yolks, 3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar, and 3/4 cup cream together in a medium saucepan. Heat while stirring continuously with a rubber spatula or wooden spoon over medium-low heat, until thickened and the mixture coats the spatula -about 10 minutes. Transfer to a medium bowl and set over the ice bath. Stir to cool.

• Add pumpkin, vanilla, spices, and salt to the egg mixture. Stir 1 tablespoon rum and 1 teaspoon gelatin together in a small bowl. Heat the remaining tablespoon rum, and stir in to the gelatin mixture until dissolved. Gently whisk into the pumpkin mixture.

Beat 1/2 cup cream to stiff peaks, and fold into pumpkin mixture. Pour into a shallow dish, cover and chill until cold and thick enough to fall from a spoon in heavy dollops -- about 8 hours or up to overnight.

• Beat the remaining cream and sugar to stiff peaks. Alternately layer the pumpkin mousse and whipped cream in a glass serving dish. Sprinkle the chocolate shavings between top two layers. Serve chilled.

Pumpkin Pie Cake INGREDIENTS

PREPARATION

1 box yellow cake mix 1 stick of butter, softened 4 large eggs, divided 2 cans pumpkin (or 1 large one) 1 5 oz can of evaporated milk 1 1/4 c sugar, divided 1 t cinnamon 1 t pumpkin pie spice ( just use cinnamon if you don't have it... or add a little nutmeg and cloves) 4 T butter, chilled 1 c toasted and chopped pecans 1/2 - 1 cup toffee pieces (optional...but SO good)

Preheat the oven to 350. Grease a 13 x 9 pan.

Set aside 1 cup of the cake mix and put the rest in a mixing bowl. Add ONE egg and the stick of butter and mix until combined. Press the mixture into the pan, evenly and up the sides a little bit.

PREPARATION

1 sheet refrigerated pie crust 1 brownie mix (18 oz.)

1/4 cup oil 1/4 cup water 1 Tablespoon instant coffee 2 eggs 1 package cream cheese (8 oz.)

1/4 cup sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg Tablespoons flour 3/4 cup pumpkin puree 1 container Cool Whip (8 oz.)

• Roll out the refrigerated pie crust. Place the crust in a 10 inch glass pie plate.

• In a mixing bowl, combine the brownie mix, oil, water, coffee, and one egg.

Beat until combined. Carefully spread in the bottom of the pie crust. Bake for 30 minutes at 350 degrees.

• While the brownie layer is baking, beat the cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla until smooth. Add the egg and pumpkin and beat again. Slowly add in the cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour.

• hen the brownie layer is finished, remove from the oven and carefully spread the cheesecake on top of the brownie layer. Cover the edges of the pie crust with foil to keep from burning. Place back in the oven and bake another 20-25 minutes.

• Remove from the oven and set on a cooling rack. Let cool for an hour. Place in refrigerator and cool completely. Spread the Cool Whip on top and sprinkle with extra cinnamon if desired.

Barrel-Aged Cherry Soda INGREDIENTS

PREPARATION

For the barrel-aged simple syrup: 220 grams sugar (about 3/4 cup) 220 grams water (about 15/16 cup) For the cocktail: 60 grams tart cherry juice (about 2 ounces) 15 grams barrel-aged simple syrup (about 1/2 ounce, or to taste) 15 grams fresh juice from 1 lemon (about 1/2 ounce) 30 grams chilled seltzer water (about 1 ounce)

To make the barrel-aged simple syrup: Combine sugar and water in a nonreactive container and allow to combine. Give it a few shakes if necessary. Transfer the syrup to the Tuthilltown Distillery container (with stave for flavoring) and let rest for days at room temperature. Use or transfer to the fridge after two days and store there for up to a week.

For the cocktail: Combine cherry juice, barrel-aged simple syrup, and lemon uice in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. hake until well chilled, about 10 seconds. train into a ice-filled rocks glass and top with seltzer water.

For Ginger Syrup: 1 3-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled and cut into thirds 2 cups water / 1 cup sugar For Punch: 8 cups chilled pear juice, such as Looza 1 cup ginger syup 1/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger 3 1/2 cups seltzer large ice block candied ginger, for garnish

Make Ginger Syrup: Place ginger, water, and sugar in a medium saucepan. Bring mixture to a boil then reduce heat and simmer until reduced to a syrup, about 30 minutes. Let cool.

Make Punch: In a large punch bowl, combine pear juice, ginger syrup, lemon juice, and ground ginger. Whisk until combined.

Add seltzer and stir gently to combine. Add ice block to punch bowl.

If desired, place three pieces of candied ginger on a tooth pick and place in each cocktail glass as garnish.

Turn slow cooker to high and add apple cider. Cover and set aside.

Heat a small skillet on medium-high and add spices. Toast, stirring freuently, until fragrant and coriander seeds begin to darken. et aside and either transfer to a reusable spice bag or add loose to cider.

Cover and let cider mull on high (reduce if it begins to bubble) for about hours, or until spice flavor is well-infused. Ten minutes before serving, add brandy. Add sugar, rounded teaspoon at a time, if cider is too tart (sugar will bring out flavor of spices if needed). erve plain, or with a slice of lemon, e tra brandy, or a small grating of nutmeg. INTERIOR DECORATOR vs INTERIOR DESIGNER WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

Often referred to as an INTERIOR DECORATOR, sometimes one feels the need to explain the differences between that and an INTERIOR DESIGNER. I thought a definition of INTERIOR DESIGNER vs INTERIOR DECORATOR might be a good way to see what we are all about!

An INTERIOR DESIGNER is usually involved with a building project from the beginning, perhaps even working with the architect. His job is to help create functional interior space by understanding how the inhabitants will use each room. He may consider light, sound and other design aspects such as balance. In the case of interior designers, this work is often done on a standalone basis, usually to improve on existing buildings rather than as a part of the initial design process. Ultimately, an interior designer’s role is to create functional, safe, efficient, comfortable and beautiful interior spaces that are fit for their purpose.

An INTERIOR DECORATOR isn't involved with the design of the building or the layout of the interior space. He is focused entirely on the furniture, colors, textiles and textures of a room. His job is to capture the personality and style of the residents and express it in their space.

While interior decorators study and work on many of the same things as interior designers, their job typically doesn’t involve moving walls, installing services or planning for things like safety and utility. This is really the main difference - interior decorators are exclusively concerned with decorating what’s already been built.

In much of today’s design the need to make spaces function is often as or more critical as the ultimate look of the space. A beautiful room that doesn’t meet seating requirements will always create a negative sensation for the owner. A great designer will take this into consideration from the very beginning.

Knowing how the space will ultimately be used, the purpose and immediate needs are goal #1. The future growth and changes to be expected are also part of the equation. Considering the use of these services are often more affordable than most realize and the return for the investment is always worthwhile. And while the decorator offers specialized services like lighting, furniture selections, colors, etc., the designer incorporates these ideas into a complete plan offering additionally layouts, budgets, and timelines.
