As a local business owner of two small businesses, I try to review my business plan monthly to see if I am meeting my goals and how I can improve productivity Throughout the years of these reviews, there have been several simple activities that I have performed that have been at a very low cost yet has seen a great return on money and on time(our most precious asset) NETWORKING Ok, this seems to be a given and probably is in the Cliff notes of every “How To Start A Business” book since the dawn of time but it's amazing how many folks do not network.

Groups like the “Charleston Area Alliance” are a great source of networking events and opportunities for your business. I guarantee if you get out and give back, this will not only increase your network but also your “net-worth”.

MIND YOUR BUSINESS It is important to look at other businesses that do business with you and reward them for their loyalty.

Offer a discount for them periodically or sometimes a handwritten “Thank You” note can go a long way to show them they truly are appreciated. On the flip side, it's also important to pay mind to those that are not loyal to you.

There is no sense/cents in going out of your way to send them business if they don't do the same to you.

There have been times where I have seen folks who like to “Realtor Shop” and needless to say, they no longer have my business.

SIGNS, SIGNS, EVERYWHERE ARE SIGNS Buy a few yards signs that “state your business” and when you are doing a few folks taxes, wiring their new addition on their home or designing their website, ask them if you can put out a sign for a few days in their yard. What better way is there to find a review of a business than by looking at who your neighbors use to do business? Just be sure to only leave them for a short period of time so not to be a nuisance!

Some of these activities may be relative to ones industry but I am sure one can craft these tips to fit in to their plan accordingly. At the end of the day, it's people that feed your business so finding new ways to contact them, reward them, and to stay in front of them should always be your top priority.
