Playbill Christmas Carol

Special Thanks to Two-Head Video Production

Tradition can often be a double edged sword. While it can invoke memories of past happiness, it may also highlight stagnation and apathy towards change. Charles Dickens helped to create the “traditional” idea of Christmas about 178 years ago; Although creating Christmas traditions was probably a by-product from the success of his story, not its primary aim. Yes, it is set at Christmas time and takes the form of a fable or carol, but its contents deal with social injustice and result in a cry for change and direct action. Multitudes of theaters across the country, including The Hipp, produce A Christmas Carol as their traditional holiday offering every year. Our hope is that this year’s production will evoke pleasant memories of the past while also highlighting how working together and creating a true ensemble in the present can affect future change and result in redemption for even the most cold-hearted of humankind. Let us put away our “deeds of passion, pride, ill-will, hatred, envy, bigotry, and selfishness” and learn to “keep Christmas well” in whatever form “Christmas” takes for you. May your traditions always evolve to keep love, charity and a sense of community in your hearts. Thank you, Gainesville, for inviting me to your community to keep and create new traditions. Have a very happy holiday season! John Gray (Director)

The Hippodrome Theatre is a first-class regional theatre and artistic space committed to excellence in North Florida and creates programming that reflects and elevates the diverse cultures and perspectives of our region as well as create and maintain ongoing engagement with our community. But what is a regional theater? Regional theater is a permanent nonprofit professional theatre company that has established roots outside the major theatre centers. Besides bringing first-rate theatre to our region, we often have programs to nurture local talent and to encourage new plays of special regional interest.

But what makes professional theater different from community theater or educational theatre? In a professional theatre everyone associated with a production, from directors, technicians, designers, and actors, are paid for their time and talent. And while community and educational theater provide opportunities for the community to take an active role in all phases of theater, our professional regional theater hires professionals who are highly trained and, at least during the production, the production is their full time job. This allows the theater to produce high quality productions very quickly - in less than three weeks! As the artistic center of downtown Gainesville, The Hippodrome, your regional professional theater, will continue to search for new forms and new theatrical voices, support local community talent, bring in the highest quality professionals, and continue to encourage creativity and diversity in all of its performance spaces. Stephanie Lynge^ (Hippodrome’s Artistic Director)
