oMetiMes YoU JUst need to make changes. Get out of a rut. Look after yourself more. We often wait for the new year to make resolutions and shift patterns, but, actually, there is no time like the present. october was a strange month for me. it holds anniversaries of births and deaths of people i dearly love and miss, and so it is a time that makes me retrospective and sometimes low. Like most of us, i carry on and put a smile on my face, but sometimes you just know it’s not working… so, in honour of those who are no longer here, and in honour of my own journey, i am gently shifting the way i operate this November. trying to focus on the present, eating well, exercising moderately, taking time out each day to just sit and soak in the surroundings. And spend more quality time with those i love. We are all so busy being busy – sometimes it’s important to just be, and focus on the good things in life, whether it’s where we live, who we share time with, or the sweet scent of wet grass after the rain!

under par month, it lifts me to read about inspiring locals, to know there are creative events around every corner, inclusive environmental projects, generous businesses giving back to the community, poets sharing their work, and people who are creating spaces of comfort for those who are possibly floundering or just needing to connect with others. i love that our paper is often a light in the gloom, and i must also add how happy i am that we are in the process of expanding our positive reach to Yandina and eumundi, and we have more Ht stands popping up in Nambour. so, however things are for you at the moment, thank you for taking some time for yourself to sit back, relax and read for a while. As for me, i will remind myself of a great quote from the film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off: “Life moves pretty fast. if you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it”.

eARtsPACe PeRFoRMiNG Arts Centre in Maleny has been busy creating wonderful dances and memories for those involved with this warm and friendly dance school. A few months ago, four Heartspace dancers travelled to sydney with Heartspace Artistic directors, Kester and Kirsty Chalkley, for a big dance conference - the British Ballet organisation Australia's 'dance days'.

HEARTSPACE happenings

the students attended classes with internationally renowned guest teachers which culminated in a big performance. Kester and Kirsty participated in professional development which is compulsory for them to maintain their registration with BBo. “it was a big deal for some of these kids who have never travelled on a plane, let alone without their parents,” said Kirsty, “and it's a big achievement for our school which has only been operating for 18 months.” student isabella Gray shared her thoughts on the trip to sydney. “Nothing bonds people better together than cancelled flights, dancing so hard that every muscle aches, and performing on stage with incredibly talented dancers from all across Australia,” she laughed. “it was an experience which offered so much insight into the exhausting lifestyle of full-time dance, as well as the positive impacts that the BBo syllabi have on all ages. “We all learnt many things that we brought back up to the hinterland with us. the values of hard work, focus, and friendship were a few, not to mention new dance moves and techniques!” since returning, there has been no let up, with Kirsty running the children’s festival at Maleny Music Festival, the mums’ class performing at the Kitty Kats vintage Beach Party at Maleny Community Centre and the Noosa and Gympie eisteddfod. Now the students are putting the finishing touches to their rehearsals for the November 16 show, ‘snow White and Her 7 Feelings verses the instaQueens’ at the Maleny Community Centre. (See Creative Cuts for full details.) “We did a professional photo shoot with dance photographers Pointe & shoot and the images are amazing – very dramatic,” Kirsty said. “Heartspace creates a very unique dance concert as it includes a big ballet work, a Musical theatre tribute and also a focus on an archetypal fairy tale with a modern twist. our message is designed to express values and life lessons to empower our dancers for life. “so much has happened, and we are so grateful to all those who have supported and sponsored us, such as the Maleny iGA and star discount Chemist Maleny. We have over 100 families and are growing steadily. “it’s a joy to be doing this.”

Uncle Jack Charles is often acknowledged as the ‘grandfather of Aboriginal theatre in Australia’, and co-founded the first Aboriginal theatre company, Nindethana Theatre, with Bob Maza, in 1972. This is just a snippet, however, of the prolific work and rich life story of a man it was a joy to share time with during the recent Obi Art Prize weekend in Maleny.

I

N MAY 2019, i had the pleasure of interviewing Colin ‘spida’ dixon, who was in the process of making a feature film in Maleny. He brought along his good friend and artist, satya demasson, and i soon found out this was the measure of the man. He liked to celebrate the talents of his friends, not just himself. i also quickly realised that once you are a friend of spida’s, he looks out for you. it therefore came as no surprise that when respected elder, activist and actor/musician/potter/writer Uncle Jack Charles, was coming to guest talk at the recent obi Art Prize (organised by satya), spida kindly asked me if i would like to meet him. His body of work is impressive, an acting career spanning six decades, and his life story is full of struggle, addiction, variety and resilience. i was, therefore, very interested in meeting him and took my friend and

photographer, Candice Herne, with me to the Maleny Hotel. Uncle Jack Charles appeared with a warm smile, strong voice and solid handshake – i immediately liked him. the four of us sat around a low table, with the late afternoon sun streaming across us in shards of light, and so began a long and varied conversation. “spida invited me to come and talk at the obi Art Prize, Uncle Jack explained, “and i like to support creative projects like this. i asked how this friendship came about, and spida told me, “i was making my first film, and i wanted Uncle Jack in it, so i contacted him on Facebook, and he replied. then i asked for his number and he gave it to me! “We started talking, and i soon went to visit him in Melbourne. When we met, we found out we have so much in common. We’re very similar in many ways, and we’ve become great mates. Uncle Jack can command large appearance fees for his talks, but he didn’t want anything from spida to come to Maleny. “i paid for the flight and accommodation, of course, but Uncle Jack is doing this for me, spida said.

the conversation between them continued with plenty of laughter for a few minutes, and then spida said his goodbyes and left us to talk. “don’t let him go walkabout afterwards,” was his joking parting shot. “He has a dinner to go to later!” Uncle Jack Charles was born in 1943 at the Royal Women’s Hospital, Melbourne, but became a victim of the Australian Government’s forced assimilation program. “My mother managed to keep me for four months,” he said. the location was rough, and Uncle Jack shared how during a visit by the Queen, a hessian fence was put up to hide “the third world conditions” of the area they all lived in as she drove by. “i was taken and raised in the salvation Army Boys’ Home in Box Hill. i was the only indigenous child, as they thought i would be properly assimilated without other indigenous kids to influence me.” However, during this time, Uncle Jack was sexually abused. throughout this period of his life, Uncle Jack “took great sustenance in the bible stories” as Christianity had been instilled in him as part of his education. “Now i am no longer a Christian,” he said. “Aboriginality is my religion. i am the Godhead within myself. i use the power of my indigeneity to guide me.” in his 40s, Uncle Jack Charles found out he was born to a Boon Wurrung mother and Wiradjuri father, “i have 13 siblings, two died at birth, and i’ve found five so far,” he shared. Charles' great-great-grandfather was a dja dja Wurrung man, among the activists who resisted government policy at victoria's Coranderrk Aboriginal Reserve in 1881. Uncle Jack’s years have been peppered with stays in jail for petty theft and drug offences, and it wasn’t until 2008 (after seeing himself in the documentary Bastardy) that he stopped for good. “i outed myself,” he explained. “i owned everything i had done. Apologised to the people whose homes i’d robbed, admitted my drug addiction, everything.” Many years before, Uncle Jack had joked that robbing from the

rich homes in Melbourne was him taking ‘rent’ from those on Aboriginal land. “Now i am keeping a black watch in the neighbourhood,” Uncle Jack explained. “i’m an urban black and i see a lot of the struggles here, so i am a stalwart. i try to keep iCe at bay. “i can never regress. i have no cause to go back to smack. i’m an open book with nothing to hide.” Uncle Jack is keen to impress upon young indigenous people that if they open themselves to their truth, “their blackness”, there is no need for drugs and alcohol. even during his prison stays, he liked to steer others from negative patterns, to encourage positive enterprise and creative expression amongst his fellow inmates. “i got into pottery, on the wheel, and i created ‘Psycho Ceramica’ in Castlemaine Jail. i made crockery, art pieces, pots, bone china. other people painted them, and i glazed. We made a profit there in open camp. “i was regularly back in jail, and every time i got my old room back, the only one with a toilet rather than a bucket and would run the pottery group again.” he smiled. Uncle Jack Charles shows immense strength of character, resilience and humour, but at times also carries the weight of the world on his shoulders, with a deep frustration and sadness for what he sees as inherent, continuous racism. “Australia is uniquely racist to its First Nation People,” he said, with fire in his eyes. An example was given from his time working with the sydney theatre Company on Secret River, where he was asked to prove his Aboriginality when given a part. “i went in and said, ‘why do i have to prove my Aboriginality?’, why is the finger being wagged at us and we are being racially vilified?” He was told there were no exceptions. “so, i stopped work, went and had to beer to mull it over, and pulled the plug.

“Cate Blanchett, who was Managing director with the sydney theatre Company at that time, said she completely understood and supported my decision, and after that i decided to go to court over the whole thing. About eight months later they changed their policy, so no actor now has to prove their Aboriginality. i’m very proud to have left that legacy.” Nowadays, Uncle Jack visits prisons, fighting against recidivism, shares his life stories across the country, and supports other artists, such a spida and satya with the obi Art Prize. His sojourn to the hinterland saw him in demand with many people in the area, and at the obi Art Prize event, i witnessed a large audience relishing every moment of his entertaining guest talk. i asked him what he thought of his visit. “i just love Maleny,” he grinned, “and it seems Maleny loves me!” i have a feeling Uncle Jack will be back...

tension between major world powers, the U.s. and soviet Union, erupted. it was known as the Cold War. this friction created fear and apprehension among citizens. sammy recalls: “in the ‘60s, we built a bomb shelter stocked with water and food because that’s what everyone did in those days. My stepfather said, ‘Where’s the one place they won’t bomb? they’ll never bomb New Zealand.’ so, we moved to New Zealand. “i was there from the age of 11 until 17 and went to Auckland Girls Grammar school. it was just the best place to grow up. “We lived near Papakura. Close by was a glider field where mum learnt to fly. i watched gliders and planes that towed them fly over our house. i followed mum to the airfield and did passenger flights. Her instructor took me under his wing. “i couldn’t afford to pay for lessons so, i stole coffee from home and supplied the guys with hot drinks in exchange

CALL CAMe As we concluded the interview. “Bat in barbed wire,” sammy Ringer’s voice sounded from the next room. she reappeared. “i have to go. it’s at the end of the street,” and apologised with a sense of urgency. i followed. it hung helpless, unmoving. Big black eyes gazed from the diminutive face in resignation. sammy wrapped the little one in a hand towel, speaking words to calm and reassure. it was an operation of precision; delicate, exact. she carried the bundle to her vehicle outfitted for such emergencies. i trailed behind with the rescue kit. sammy examined the patient. i stood at the rear in awe and filled with hope. “euthanasia,” she exclaimed as i looked over her shoulder into those big, black eyes. i drove away, tears streaming down my cheeks. in my opinion, wildlife rescue volunteers are our unsung heroes. sammy Ringer’s involvement with wildlife, refugees, Maleny cooperatives and her career as a writer and documentary maker is locally known. However, it was that familiar American twang that sparked my curiosity. “i was born in Mansfield, ohio – a little town that grew corn and maize and corn and maize,” reflects sammy with her trademark satirical sense of humour. “We left there when i was five after my mother remarried and went to live in Los Angeles.” in the aftermath of World War ii, political and military

for half hour lessons.” A year later, the 15-year-old attained her glider license and later upgraded to a private pilot’s license. in the early ‘70s, sammy followed her mother back to L.A. but couldn’t settle. she returned to New Zealand. A couple of lads with a catamaran in sydney enticed this restless spirit to join them. the adventurers flew to Australia with the intention of sailing to the Middle east in a quest to search for shipwrecks. “it took us three months to sail from sydney to southport! twice we were pulled to shore by the water rescue police. the journey ended at southport due to damage to the trimaran.” sammy gained employment on the Gold Coast, then met a producer which led her back to sydney and a career writing for television. Her love of writing began as a teenager. After a year at Auckland University studying science and History, she left and became a department store copywriter. “i wrote about mittens and undies and the like for quite a few years then went to L.A. where i wrote for another department store and an advertising agency but really wanted to break into tv, so moved between Melbourne and sydney. “i bombarded every producer saying, i’m the best writer you will find and landed a job scriptwriting for Bellbird. Following, was The Sullivans, Hotel Story and writer / researcher / director for Simon Townsend’s Wonder World. “My series Twenty Good Years was picked up by the ABC in 1979. i also wrote scripts for E Street. After it folded, a friend of mine said, ‘sammy you can write for tv from anywhere and you’ll love Maleny’.” in the wake of her second marriage and news of her mother’s cancer diagnosis, sammy shuffled between sydney and L.A. in 1994, the pair moved to Maleny. Betty Ringer became a well-loved personality around town until her passing in 2010. “When i moved to Maleny, i discovered it’s not quite so easy to get work. during my time here, i’ve done a few docos, short films, lecturing, wildlife and retirement. My favourite short film aired by the ABC was Chant of the Scrub

Turkey filmed at Frog’s Hollow.” there were times sammy floundered. A suggestion to join community groups lifted her from despondency. the Upfront Club and Maple street Cooperative embraced her enthusiasm and talent. she was editor of the Maple Street Co-op News and publisher of Australian Bushfoods magazine for several years - the latter now online. sammy’s introduction to a new career caring for wildlife came by way of a possum trapped in her garage. she called for help and subsequently joined WiLvos (Wildlife volunteers Association inc.). “two years later, i was visiting my friend Carmel Givens. she was feeding a baby flying fox. smitten, i joined Bat Rescue. Many of the calls i get are for bats on barbed wire. Until a couple of months ago, there would be about one bat a week but now, due to a mass starvation event we can get four a day.” sammy’s current writing projects encapsulate her passions, highlight her sense of humour and draws attention to political concerns: Granny Snatch alludes to women of that ‘certain age’ setting free a refugee; Two Old Ladies and a Smart Phone is a series of short comedies; and, the Council of Possums makes a statement indicative of this woman’s love of wildlife. “it’s about a couple of ringtails that decide they’ve had enough. All their trees are cut down. their nests are on the ground. they get together with Currawongs and other wildlife and start to push back!” Mansfield to Maleny, glider pilot to bat rescue, copywriter to film maker, no amount of words can adequately note sammy Ringer’s talent and service to our community. she is indeed our very own ‘Bat Woman’.

the PCC ladies’ team has 17 in its squad and 13 main players, based out of Palmwoods. At the helm is young Captain Julia Brown. she is confident and tenacious, never taking her eye off the ball when it’s in play and leading her team. Julia has been playing cricket for over ten years, starting out with boys’ school cricket for most of her life before excitedly moving into women’s cricket at sunshine Coast Grammar. “i was just one of the boys with them, it was great. i was the only girl playing cricket for most of my junior cricket, before Grammar and until i got into the state competition. i also went on to play for Queensland in 2012 before injury meant i had to stop playing at that level,” she says proudly. Julia says women in cricket are really supportive of one another and celebrate in each other’s successes. “there is

a real comradeship and friendship that comes with cricket.” she has seen first-hand the growth in opportunities for women’s cricket on the sunshine Coast recently too, especially for younger girls. “there was nothing for girls on the coast back then and now you are expecting to see a girl playing on a team and some of the girls that i played with are now playing in Brisbane Heat and playing for Australia. i’m so happy for them.” Cricket is such a good sport to be involved in, Julia believes. “i always say that the team is your second family. You can always trust them. i have known some of these ladies for a good five years now and it will be for life as well.” As Captain she looks after her own team, but she is also a role model for girls playing cricket too and wants any girl who is interested to reach out to a club. “Just have a go, cricket is for everyone. they will have lifelong friendships and there are so many chances for girls to play now.” the women are also positive role models for their sons, as they see their mothers actively involved in the sport, taking on leadership positions traditionally assumed to be men’s roles in the game. the PCC is also making its own headlines in cricket because this year it has its first ever female Club President, a club first, since it began in the 1890s! this incredible achievement and milestone by Melinda shelley is a big accomplishment for women in sport, and recognition for her leadership skills and passion for cricket. Melinda says she is really proud to be a part of such a great club. “i am very fortunate to hold that title this season and to also be the second female president on the coast too. it is a great position to hold and i have a great team alongside me. “With the committees we have going this year too, we are all working as part of a big team to get cricket on the field.” Melinda is a shining example of sportsmanship, inclusiveness and community, you can see immediately why she is Club President and how much all the women respect her. she is also part of the Ladies’ Committee on the coast, which is all about getting women’s cricket up and running successfully across the region. “Across the sunshine Coast the ladies’ teams are all very friendly and all get along really well,” says Melinda. the popularity of the sport is growing across the coast

too. “Last season we had only six teams playing in the competition and this year we have nine, and nine clubs, so it’s great to see that we are expanding and even have four brand new clubs coming into the competition. “We are fortunate that we are all in there to grow the competition. it’s cricket, it’s cricket that wins.” Melinda says any girl over 14 who is interested in having a go, making new friends and sharing a love of cricket is very welcome to contact the club. they are always looking for new members and eventually would love to have a twotiered team system. “in our team and across all clubs there is a large range of skills, so we accommodate for that.” team Manager, Michael Guest, says Cricket Australia is trying to get more women involved and it’s good to see. “this is my second season for me here and i’m really enjoying it. i really can see it having two tiers eventually. What the sunshine Coast scorchers have done is definitely a step in the right direction for women’s cricket in the area. Prior to that starting, if women wanted to play, they had to go to Brisbane or play on the men’s teams. “since the scorchers started a couple of years ago a few of our girls we have playing came through there to the Palmwoods team, and the sunshine Coast had nine teams this year, which is an expansion already from last year.” Michael says the games this season will be worth coming to watch. “Hopefully we can get a win. We came close last year and there were a couple of games where results could have gone either way and we even had a tie. Hopefully we can bring a premiership to Palmwoods for women but as long as they are having fun, that’s what counts.” The PCC ladies have upcoming home games at The Woods on Jubilee Drive on November 10, December 8 and January 19. Find them on Facebook: Palmwoods Hinterland Hawks Cricket Club.

WHAT MAKES A VALID WILL – PART 1 As the dear readers would already know a Will is a document that sets out the wishes of a person regarding how that person’s estate should be distributed after death. I shall call the will-maker “the Testator” for the rest of this Article.

Killed on the bloody battlefields of WWI and without a grave for his family to mourn, Maleny man Tom Lillingstone’s story had almost vaporised from history … until now. Armed with dogged determination, Lillingstone’s niece – Jill Lillingstone – meticulously researched her uncle’s life, producing a raft of documents to finally prove that Tom’s name is indelibly enmeshed with Maleny’s pioneering history.

For a Will to be valid it Must meet certain formal requirements as follows: 1. WRITING The Will must be in writing. This means that it can be handwritten or typed. The same writing method – either handwriting or typed – must be used throughout the Will to avoid confusion. It can be made in any language but it is obviously best if it is written in English to avoid problems of translation or interpretation. 2. SIGNED It should be signed by the Testator making the Will. A signature can also be a mark in case the person signing the Will is blind or illiterate. In circumstances where the Testator is unable to mark or sign the Will then someone else can sign on the Testator’s behalf providing firstly that the Testator is present when the Will is signed and secondly that this is disclosed in the Will. 3. DATED The Will must be dated the day it was signed. Although a Will is effective from the date of the Testator’s death and not from the date of signing, the date of signing must appear on the Will. If the Will has no date then the witnesses may be required to swear an affidavit about the date the Will was signed. 4. WITNESSES The Testator’s signature must be witnessed by two witnesses who must both be present when the Testator signs. It is also important that a beneficiary not witness the Testator’s signature as in a worst case scenario it could mean that any gift to that beneficiary is invalid.

N eARLY deCeMBeR 1916, tom Lillingstone enlisted to serve his country and promptly left for overseas… never to return. tom Lillingstone had arrived in Maleny as a baby in 1884. He was the eldest child of William and Jessie Lillingstone of London and had six younger siblings. Jill’s father William Lillingstone (jnr) was the youngest. “tom’s father built the first school in Maleny and was a schoolmaster in the area for over 20 years. His father also built his own house when they selected land in June 1887,” says Jill who is now retired and living in Melbourne. “then for some reason, my grandfather decided to take the two youngest children and his wife to vancouver in Canada. “they were highly regarded here and i’ve got cuttings from the paper how they were losing the hard-working well known pioneers.” Being oxford educated, William did the books for Maleny businesses, was a director on the Butter Factory Board and provided advice to the local timber industry. “Canada did not work out and they came back in 1912 and re-settled in Maleny.” Meanwhile, tom had taken a keen interest in the timber of the area and appears on the 1906 electoral roll as being a ‘dairyman’.

Tom Lillingstone in uniform

Jill produces an old map of Maleny depicting the names and selections of the early settlers. Among the familiar ones of dunlop, scott, Wells, tytherleigh and Hankinson is Lillingstone. While the family was in Canada, tom’s lifestyle became semi-itinerant, a common practice of the era. Possessing abilities as both a dairy farmer and carpenter, he would roll up his swag and take off through the week, working wherever there were opportunities, and coming back home on weekends.

Above: Tom Lillingstone’s niece, Jill Lillingstone, points to Tom’s new plaque with the fork he used in the trenches Below: The Lillingstone family with Tom on the far right (one daughter was absent for the photo)

For this reason, it is not known where he enlisted, but Private tom Lillingstone, 2837, 41st Battalion 6th Reinforcement refused to fire a gun or kill. Jill believes he felt it was his duty to serve, even though he told relatives he knew he would not be coming home. such a heart-wrenching prophecy is hard to imagine. “tom was in advanced first aid,” says Jill. “He didn’t believe in shooting or killing. He was front line – he would take the wounded back…” ironically, the man who refused to kill was killed in the ‘Bloody Battle of Passchendaele’, on october 5, 1917 in Ypres, Belgium. the poignancy of his death was highlighted even further when it was discovered that when he was killed, he had in his pocket a postcard to his mother. the singed edges of the card bear testament to the brutality of the bombardment. the Battle of Passchendaele is considered one of the worst horrors of WWi because of the sheer futility of much of the fighting, and the reckless disregard by some of the war’s senior leaders for the lives of the men under their command. the armies under British command suffered 275,000 casualties at Passchendaele. Among these were 38,000 Australians, 5,300 New Zealanders, and 15,600 Canadians. one of the few personal possessions returned to the Lillingstone family was the dinner fork that tom used in the trenches. Clearly etched into the metal are his initials – tL – and it was treasured by the family who had few mementos with which to cherish his memory. “dad used that fork every day until he died,” says Jill sadly. Because the exact location of tom’s enlistment is unknown, his name had been missing from the honour board at the Maleny RsL and also in the Maleny Walk of Remembrance at the Maleny soldiers Memorial Hospital. “the Lillingstone name belongs here and i’d just like to see that acknowledged.” Well, life is full of surprises. on october 10, i accompanied Jill to the Walk of Remembrance, where she was overjoyed to see that tom’s name had been added to one of the stone bollards. it was a portentous moment when Jill realised that his name had been added on the 102nd anniversary of tom’s death. Also adding to Jill’s delight, tom’s name is now proudly included in the Honour Roll at the Maleny RsL. vice-President of the Maleny RsL Chris Brooker said: “When we were made aware of his service, we realised he deserved to be recognised and added his name to the Honour Roll.” overwhelmed, Jill said: “i am very grateful to the Maleny Hospital Auxiliary and the Maleny RsL for acknowledging tom’s deep connection to Maleny and his dedication to helping the wounded soldiers. “the Walk of Remembrance is a wonderful creation that we should be very proud of. there’s peace in this place

and i always feel better for my time here. “i pass under the arbor with its climbing plants, sit on a seat in the tranquil garden to reflect and say a silent ‘thank you’ to those who left our shores and their families, in sacrifice for us. “it’s so lovely for him to be recognised in time for Remembrance day.” We agree Jill. the Walk of Remembrance is dedicated to the Maleny veterans who left everything they had when they went to fight for their country in WW1. it is open to the public 365 days a year. Lest we forget.

N exHiBitioN of original artwork, Snippets from the Western Front, will be displayed in st Mary's Community Hall, Montville, 10am to 3pm daily from Friday November 8 to Monday November 11. With watercolours and drawings of special features of the Western Front from the Great War. it is of direct relevance to the commemoration of Remembrance day. the artist is the late Ross Coulter who was heavily involved in the establishment of the emu Park Art Gallery and the iconic Centenary of Anzac Memorial Precinct in emu Park. His artwork reflects the influence of his own Australian Army operational service, as a National serviceman, in the war in south vietnam. Ross's widow, Kate, has kindly loaned the artwork, including transporting it to Montville. it is supported, locally, by the Mapleton sub Branch of the RsL, with assistance from the Blackall Range visual Artists.

Attention

chocolAte lovers! T

He MALeNY CHoCoLAte Co. has been wholesaling to high end chocolate shops from Brisbane to Noosa for many years. Now they have opened a brand new factory outlet store right in the heart of Maleny! Find them where Gypsy’s table restaurant used to be, down stairs behind Monica’s Cafe or entry from the rear car park in Bicentenary Lane. stage one was the completion of the new production room, churning out two tonnes of chocolate a year and growing! stage two was the adjoining retail area, freshly renovated and now open. this is quickly gaining a reputation as the place to go for free tastings of their products, whether it’s freshly made Rocky Road, dipped honeycomb or the latest slab of roasted macadamia nuts on 67% dark chocolate. stage three will be the cake and hot chocolate cafe area, hopefully early next year. Locals can now enjoy freshly made chocolate offerings, rather than preservative-filled products sometimes made overseas many months ago. You can really taste the difference. And there’s plenty for vegans, as well as sugar-free bars of 83% dark chocolate, if that’s your style. the logo says “the art of chocolate and the chocolate bars are just that - a work of art, almost too good to eat! Maleny Chocolate Co. has always had

a reputation for the generous loading of toppings on their chocolate bars. they are also sealed in clear wrappers so you can see what deliciousness you are choosing. dorothy Hills is the driver behind the business. she was dux of her Cordon Bleu class in London and has been the resident cook for the British High Commissioner as well as head chef for the Nepalese royal family. dorothy originally brought her skills to the Green Kitchen Cafe in Maleny ten years ago, which became so popular she was run off her feet and had to sell the business! Now dorothy's skills go into making ganaches for delicious praline treats, honeycomb to die for, secret recipe chocolate sauces and even unusual flavour pairings for chocolate barks, like sea salt and liquorice mixed with a smooth white chocolate. open seven days from 10am until 4pm, with free tastings every day of their premium Belgian couverture chocolate

from Callebaut. Now is the time to order a Christmas hamper - and you can personalise your gift by choosing chocolates to really suit the happy recipient!

NE OF AUSTRALIA’S most exciting chefs is taking over The Tamarind kitchen in Maleny for one night only this November. Adam Liston, of Adelaide’s Shobosho restaurant, will bring his unique Japanese charcoal cooking style to Spicers Tamarind for Spice Sessions - Shobosho Takeover on November 22, 2019, starting at 6.30pm. Last year, Liston collected a Good Food Guide chef hat and a Gourmet Traveller star. He is regarded as one of the rising stars of modern Australian cuisine. His cooking is a blend of smoke, steam and fire, the ancient Japanese yakitori traditions, and his menus take a journey through raw to cooked food, with yakitori, noodles, dumplings, bao, robata grilled and spit-roasted meats. Shobosho is all about communal dining, making this a group dining experience not to be missed!

Liston honed his skills in Shanghai, cooking at T8 for two years. T8 is constantly rated in the Miele Guide as one of China’s Top 5 restaurants. Liston’s latest venture, Joybird, recently opened in Adelaide. It’s a modern take on the quintessential suburban chicken shop, with an emphasis on ethically and sustainably sourced produce. “For many people this will be a rare opportunity to experience an extraordinary culinary approach,’’ Daniel Jarrett, executive chef at The Tamarind, said. “There’s nothing to compare this style of cooking to in Queensland at the moment. It is world class. I think those lucky enough to get a ticket will be talking about Adam Liston – and his cooking – for years to come. “It also fits well with the Asian fusion experience diners get at The Tamarind on a regular basis.” Tickets for Spice Sessions - Shobosho Takeover cost $130 per person (food only) and include Shobosho snacks, Shobosho six-course set menu and Shobosho music.

e Live iN A beautiful part of this planet… blue skies, beaches and gorgeous hinterland. As we race from job to home, from school to shops, or from the highways to the byways… it is easy to take this all for granted, and to forget that some of us do it pretty tough. thankfully there are some fantastic organisations around that don’t forget. they look after those requiring help, education, or with special needs. And they are largely run by a solid team of volunteers who care about our community and help make sure that none of us fall through the gaps. At secrets on the Lake in Montville, they believe the world goes around on kindness… not just giving money or things, but giving time and of yourself. the owners, George and Aldy, are constantly humbled by and grateful for each and every one of their staff, suppliers, treehouse guests, dining on the deck patrons, and wedding couples, and their ongoing support and commitment to their business. due to this, secrets like to ‘pass it on’ wherever they can, and usually that means donating to charities and raffling off accommodation stays and restaurant vouchers to raise money for local community groups helping those in need. every year since 2010 secrets have supported the community by raising nearly $20,000 for local groups and charities. this November they are giving a ‘Helping Hand’ and running a raffle to raise money for three local charities. so let’s get behind this fundraiser and buy a ticket whenever any of us pop into secrets or some of the local businesses in the hinterland over the next few months.

each ticket goes in the draw to win one of five main prizes… either a one- or two-night midweek stay in one of their world-class treehouses, or one of two restaurant vouchers for a meal at dining on the deck, or a $100 voucher for Mane street Hair and Beauty. every cent of your raffle ticket purchase will go towards supporting the shack Community Centre and Lily House! the raffle will be drawn at a special fundraiser morning tea on thursday November 28, starting from 9.30am and going until approximately 11am. Members of the public are invited to see the prizes drawn, while enjoying a tasting plate of morning tea morsels. there will be lucky door prizes including a night’s stay and others, a guest speaker and some fun guaranteed. Please make a booking. Morning tea is $15 with profits going to the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, a special place providing connection, emergency relief and accommodation, counselling, and raising awareness and community development. Tickets and morning tea bookings can be purchased at Secrets on the Lake, online at info@secretsonthelake.com.au or by phoning (07) 5478 5888.

e BeLieve eveRYoNe should have access to healthy food and medicine, not just those who can afford it,” said Josh and sarah stubbs, the couple behind the Koha Nursery near Kenilworth. “We want to see healthy organically grown food and medicine accessible for all and what better way to have access to these than to have them growing where you live.” the Koha Nursery is a plant nursery dedicated to providing edible and medicinal plants by donation. can pay or exchange what they can afford, this way everyone gets a chance of having some useful plants for their home and community. "Koha" is a word that comes from the Maori people in Aotearoa, New Zealand. translated to english it means a “gift”, "contribution" or “donation”. After living in New Zealand for three years and connecting with Maori people, Josh and sarah have come to see that koha is about sharing. “We initially started this project in New Zealand and shared vegetable seedlings, medicinal herbs, medicinal balms, and beeswax wraps at a local market,” explained Josh. “We also donated plants to a mental health centre and a local community garden.” “Now back in Australia, we are setting up at local markets to provide Australian native edible and medicinal plants, as well as vegetables and other medicinal herbs which are all grown organically,” continued sarah. “there are also plans to set up bush tucker/ bush medicine gardens with our mate, Wiruungga dunggirr.” Wiruungga is an indigenous elder of the Gumbaynggirr nation who for many years has

supported remote Aboriginal communities by driving his bus out to the desert to donate clothes, food and set up food gardens. “together with Wiruungga we aim to help preserve and share knowledge and culture,” shared Josh. “As the nursery evolves we also wish to assist with bush revegetation projects by providing suitable native plants. “We are looking for ongoing support to continue covering costs needed to run the nursery and market stalls. Funds will also contribute to other projects aimed at helping those living in poverty such as assisting the development of community gardens and helping Wiruungga with his work with Aboriginal communities. Any support will be greatly appreciated.” “Many of us have so much to give and we hope to inspire others to realise the great changes we can make if we share what we can with others,” sarah added with a warm smile. to find out more about the Koha Nursery visit the facebook page: kohanursery. to donate please go to: gofundme.com/f/the-koha-plant-nursery For more about the work of Wiruungga visit: dreamtimewalkabout.com

Yanni Van Zijl Arts Connect Inc. (ACI) is a not-for-profit organisation based in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, who organise annual events such as Sculpture on the Edge, open studios and artist workshops. New members are always welcome – visit artsconnectinc.com.au. This month we hear from ACI member, Yanni Van Zijl, who recently won Sculpture on the Edge 2019 at Spicers Tamarind, with her entry, Anew.

Y

ANNi is A MULti-disCiPLiNARY, award-winning artist who creates 3d, site-specific and installation work, her recurring themes are about issues concerning the environment and man’s footprint. Yanni aims to create visual work that stimulates provocation; to shift us to action or at the very least arouse discussion and raise awareness. “it is fair to say nature inspires me. i am a great believer you have to give something back, we are incredibly fortunate to live where we live, so it is the least i can do. “i usually create work with an environmental message or theme, however my ceramic work is often an experiment around aesthetics in line, form and flow. “When creating Anew, i had walked the gardens at spicers tamarind, looking at sites that appealed and where

Yanni with her 2018 Sculpture on the Edge entry, Earth, Wind and Fire, which won the Environmental Award

Award-winning sculpture Anew by Yanni Van Zijl

i knew the work would sit subtly within that space. i had earlier made tiny ceramic seed sprouts mounted in charcoal, that sculpture was about how the forest has this amazing ability to regenerate after fire. these measured only eight centimetres in size, but back then i thought how can i make these two metres in size? “it was a struggle finding a method and way to achieve it, what colour should they be, the idea of growing the moss onto them evolved, straight away i knew that would be perfect. it is fair to say i did not realise at the time how difficult that would be. My concept was: in order for a forest to be healthy, we need the smallest to the tallest within it to be in balance. “Nurturing the moss over these past months made me realise that it was just like a forest in tiny scale, a microcosm of activity dwells at this level. “the fern design was a reflection of the new fern leaves that unfurl near the tree fern glade in which they are placed. When i placed them there someone said had i not been standing there he would have thought that they were there naturally of their own account, the idea of this pleased me, that the work was quiet and sensitive to the site, almost overlooked. “i am now working toward a sensory exhibition about renewables, oil exploration in the Great Australian Bight, drought and flood, human impact on the planet and our role in that, and the exhibition will encompass film, installation and sound.” We will keep you posted!

LIGHT RELIEF & LEUNIG Relax, read a few letters, enjoy a crossword and cartoon, and maybe put pen to paper (finger to keyboard) yourself! We would love you to share your thoughts and experiences with us and Ht readers. email: editor@hinterlandtimes.com.au or write to Po Box 818, Maleny, Qld, 4552. Infrastructure ideas

• Redesign Maple and Fig streets garage corner.

A Shambles thank you

Maleny is a tourist town that needs a ten year plan involving the council, the federal member, the state member, chamber of commerce and the tourist association to combine their efforts to bring a plan into action to prevent Maleny being overlooked in favour of the coast. the area in question is shown in the 39th edition 2019/2020 of the APex Maleny Business directory, on page 236. .

• Construct an all weather toilet facility in town centre to include incontinence and baby changing facilities. (Medicos approve)

thank you to all who attended our open Garden at "the shambles" Montville in october.

We receive grants for sporting activities from the commonwealth state and local council but none for infrastructure. Let us have a competition for a design covering some of the following areas;

• Provide a taxi rank in Maple street and at the library

• Provide a toilet attendant from 7am - 7pm, seven days a week. (We are a tourist town) • Construct bicycle lanes/paths over the area in question. • Redesign the ANZ Bank corner. • Whatever happened to the Maleny development Control Plan approved before the political forced amalgamation?

• Redesign Maple street parking.

• A taxi rank in the main street as well as the library

• Construct a walking footpath to the new police station from Maple street. • Put down decent footpaths on both sides of Maple street and put down pedestrian crossings to service businesses on both sides of the street.

• Have council arrange with owners of land, fronting Willow Lane, Maple street and Coral street to arrange for multi-storey car parking facilities to be built. these are just a few ideas i can come up with.

• Replace the suicide footpath outside of the Maleny Hotel. • Repair or replace footpaths in Coral street and put down pedestrian crossings to service businesses on both sides of the street.

Yours, John Wildman (Formed the Maleny Residents Association in the 1990, Secretary of Green Hills and a member of the Pre Amalgamation, Maleny Local Area Plan Committee, Secretary Maleny Bowls Club)

As a result of all of your efforts we are able to donate $4 500 to the Western Queensland drought appeal. that means in 2019 our easter open Garden and this latest spring event have raised over $10 000. this money will be used to buy cash-cards for drought affected families in a number of Western districts. We believe that everyone who came along over the weekend was very understanding that our garden was suffering in the dry and somewhat amazed that most of the plants remained lush and are hardy enough to survive without watering. it has always been our mantra to plant tough, resilient plants that can adapt to all conditions. it was lovely to chat to people visiting and to see many inspired to go and work on their gardens. CORNER

Kiwi Mark’s Bicycle

A Cosy Life

Ma died last year.

In warmth beneath the covers

My heart broke.

We cuddled

She was my grandmother.

And from each to each

She was my love.

Depth passed unspoken.

Fresh tears well as I think of her.

Unheeded

My throat chokes up and I want to

The night shivered

scream.

To a cooling wind.

Grandma my love, Grandma my Ma come back.

Beyond the horizon

Grief overwhelms me.

They danced

Fresh tears track down my face.

An intricate step.

Ma my love come visit me.

Green and brown leaves

I welcome your arms around me again.

Dripping

Your love sustained me.

On blending uniform.

Oh how I miss you. Dear Ma you were precious to me.

‘Twas Kiwi Mark, from Landsborough, that caught the cycling craze;

Oh we sighed

Come spend some time with me.

He turned away the good old horse that served him many days;

But life is good.

All that exists …

He dressed himself in cycling clothes, resplendent to be seen;

Skin so silk smooth

Is traces of memories,

He hurried off to town and bought a shining new machine;

Untouched by age

Scraps of tales,

And as he wheeled it through the door, with air of lordly pride,

Untouched by care.

Fresh tears daily.

The grinning shop assistant said, ‘Excuse me, can you ride?’

Fresh tears every day wash your loss away. Ma my love I grieve for you. You are part of me…

From the mud arose

‘See here, young man,’ said Kiwi Mark, ‘from Landsborough to the sea,

Visions of home.

From Kenilworth to Noosa Heads, there’s none can ride like me.

Careless motion evoked

I’m good all round at everything, as everybody knows,

Was detected

Although I’m not the one to talk – I hate a man that blows.’

Forever. © Jacklyn Irwin, Maleny

And paid for. The warrior crumpled

‘Twas Kiwi Mark, from Landsborough, that sought his own abode, That perched above old Mellum Creek, beside the mountain road.

And light fled

He turned the cycle down the hill and mounted for the fray

In his lonely dying.

But ere he’d gone a dozen yards it bolted clean away.

Gentle in my mind

It left the track, and through the trees, just like a silver streak,

We snuggled closer

It whistled down the awful slope, towards old Mellum Creek.

Happy

I can feel you moving gently

Then slept.

Through my thoughts and mind

It struck a stone and gave a spring that cleared a fallen tree,

Stepping so very softly

It raced beside a precipice as close as close could be;

Not sure you will be found.

And then as Kiwi Mark let out one last despairing shriek

I can see you smiling

It made a leap of twenty feet into old Mellum Creek.

© Barry Rosenberg

As you look around Walking through doorways

‘Twas Kiwi Mark, from Landsborough, that slowly swam ashore;

That do not have a lock

He said, ‘I’ve had some narrer shaves and lively rides before;

Looking into mirrors

I’ve rode a wild bull round a yard to win a five buck bet,

Keep sending us your poems - we love receiving your creative work!

But this was the most awful ride that I’ve encountered yet.

Reflecting nature’s clock.

I’ll give that two-wheeled outlaw best; its’ shaken all my nerve

I am busy creating worlds I am slow in measuring time, But the times I treasure most Is when I find you in my mind. © J.A. Green

To submit your work for possible publication, email: editor@hinterlandtimes.com.au or post: PO Box 818, Maleny 4552 Word limit per poem (due to space) is 300 words.

To feel it whistle through the air and plunge and buck and swerve.’ It’s safe at rest in Mellum Creek, we’ll leave it lying stark; A horse’s back is good enough henceforth for Kiwi Mark. © John F Powell

Many readers enjoy our Q&A with a local hinterland business, as it’s always good to know more about the face behind a business. This month it’s time for Juan Perez, manager and owner of Maleny Smash Repairs, to be in the spotlight!

A smashing read Where did you grow up? i was born in santiago, Chile, and arrived here in Australia when i was eight years old. We moved into the southside of Brisbane and joined the Yeronga community. i settled on the Gold Coast as a young adult and moved to Brisbane when i met my wife. What made you move to the hinterland? i had my honeymoon here in Maleny and fell in love with the weather and the people. the town was quiet enough and yet still close enough to the larger city. We spoke about moving here when the time was right. My wife was offered a position here and with us starting our young family, it was the right time to move away from the big smoke and join this beautiful town. i love the fact i get to have a fire going in winter, and a dip in the local waterways in summer. How long have you been running Maleny Smash Repairs and how did you get into the business? i started an apprenticeship learning how to spray paint aeroplanes after i graduated high school, and then moved into spray painting motor vehicles, and i travelled the eastern coast of Australia working in shops and seeing the sights. i completed my Certificate 4 in management, before running the Queensland arm of one of the largest paint and panel companies in Australia. it was long hours! When i first moved here in 2016, i started contracting to the previous owner on a part time basis. i was lucky enough to have been offered the shop when the owner decided it was time for him to move on – so now i own and manage it! Do you have any funny stories from your work? oh, i have heaps! sometimes i have to juggle both sides of a car accident and not get stuck in the middle! We all have done this before… forgotten that we have something new. i had a client who started riding a push bike. He spent a lot of money on a new, state-of-the-art push bike with the latest technology. He bought the best bike rack available which was mounted on the roof of the car. He had also just bought a new Jeep.

He picked all of this up from the dealership when he had a call from home, asking him to also stop and get some milk and bread. in doing so, he forgot that he had this expensive push bike on the roof of the car and proceeded to park his car in his garage. the bike was attached that well to the new roof rack that it peeled the roof off the Jeep and left him looking up at the light bulb in his garage! Juan Perez, owner and manager of Maleny Smash Repairs

What does a 'typical' day entail for you? My boys wake up early, so i normally am in charge of grinding the coffee and putting the pot on, before playing with them and helping them get sorted for school, before heading to the shop around 7.30. it’s a fine art knowing what cars are in the booth, which are drying, being fitted up, detailed and out the door in the least possible time! i finish by 4pm. it’s important to me that i get home in the afternoon to spend time with my family or coach my boys’ sports teams. If you had to share any advice connected to your business, what would it be? if you have an accident, come and see us. it may look like just a scratch, but there may be damage underneath that you are not aware of which could put you and your family at risk. it’s free for a quick check and quote. Check your insurance policy and make sure you have a choice of repairer. the last thing you want is to have to drive for an hour to get your car repaired and have no say on where to go.

What do you like the most about the business? What i love about this business is meeting new faces and helping people out of a bad situation. i love repairing damages and seeing the faces of the people once it is repaired, and i love bringing faded cars back to their former glory.

Ray White Maleny welcomes a new business to town

C

HRis sMitH from Ray White Maleny is pleased to welcome another new and exciting business to town; he was thrilled to be able to negotiate a deal for ted and Kim, the owners of ishtar Antiques and vintage. ishtar is already turning heads and creating a lot of interest as they have taken up the prime location of the old ANZ Bank on the corner of Maple street and teak street. An unusual name for a business you might

think, but the business has been affectionately named after their dog who grew up at their Nambour business, takeUbak. ishtar's Antiques and vintage has grown out of their love for discovering beautiful and unusual items. We invite you to drop into their new store and say hi and browse through their amazing and interesting store. they also buy and sell and offer layby and delivery services.

Christmas volunteers needed

HRistMAs is CoMiNG and it’s a good time to help others in our hinterland communities.

the ‘reverse advent calendar’ is a great way to give to those who need it. Just add non-perishable items in a box for the 25 days of Christmas, then pop into your local community centre in Maleny, Nambour or wherever is closest to you a few days before Christmas and donate the box. volunteering is also appreciated, and the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre would love your help. once again, the MNC is holding their annual Christmas Breakfast on Christmas morning from 8am to 11am. it is a great opportunity to participate as a volunteer or just come down and enjoy hot or cold breakfast options. the centre will require volunteers leading up to the day and on the day for various tasks. the roster will be available at reception for people to come and place their names. All shifts are two hours only. santa will be there from 10am and all kids will receive a present!

ALeNY BAsed Norman Richards Building design + interiors have just won three Building designers Association of Queensland Awards for Mary Cairncross scenic Reserve and R-B House, for outstanding design and interiors. “the sunshine Coast has some of the best sites in the world and they deserve the best buildings,” Norman said. “our goal is to enhance the experience of each site while maximising comfort and sustainability. “We enjoyed designing the Mary Cairncross scenic Reserve discovery Centre in collaboration with Guymer Bailey Architects, as it is a unique and important site for the sunshine Coast and for visitors.” designer, Fiona Briody continued, “sustainable design is just good design: design that gives a sense of space, uses less materials, less embodied energy and minimises artificial heating and cooling.” R-B House was originally a four-bay shed that was renovated into an elegant and comfortable family residence on a tight budget. “We are a small Maleny-based design studio,” said Fiona. “it is an honour to have our work recognised at a national level.”

Our amazing backyard

T

He BLACKALL RANGe is a spectacular place to live. the diversity of the rainforests, the fertility of the land, the abundance of water, the beautiful weather, the spectacular vistas and the wonderful community are a unique commodity on this planet. if we slow down enough to take it all in, the land can shape us and open our minds and hearts to a wealth of possibilities for our lives and those we share our lives with. sorry for the fluffy intro, must have gotten carried away enjoying the wonders of spring arriving! spring is here and the flowers and lush new foliage remind me of what a great place we call home. our scattered rainforest fragments contain a great diversity of native plants, some of (if not the most) diverse subtropical rainforest ecosystems on the planet. Australia’s rainforests, in spite of their fragmented and limited size (less than 0.5% of Australia’s land mass), are amongst the oldest and most diverse rainforest ecosystems on the planet. so, if you are lucky enough to have remnant rainforest in your “backyard”, enjoy and nurture this precious and rare forest jewel - either just for the sake of it or for the positive real estate values that the rainforest delivers you! once upon a time long, long ago (actually just over a decade

or so) “scrub” degraded the value of your block, but these days what attracts people to the range are the views and “owning” your own little patch of rainforest. this is a great turn of events as we now have some financial incentive for the potentially costly revegetation of the Blackall Range. thankfully we also have lots of support for landholders from our local councils, which is money well spent, as we all benefit from the healthier landscape. Check out your local council website for landholder grant funding information. don’t feel left out if you don’t have any remnant rainforest. Plant local rainforest plants because they grow well, create habitat and look great. even in the smallest backyards there is a local native rainforest plant (or dozen) for you, that look great and help restore the rainforest diversity of our Blackall Range. Check out your local rainforest nurseries for local rainforest plants such as Barung Landcare and Go-Green Rainforest Nursery. if you don’t have any land to re-rainforest yourself, join in with one of the many community-based restoration projects such as Hinterland Bush Links. sometimes it’s easy to forget with the apparent speed of our lives what an awesome place we live in and what an awesome community we are part of, plant more rainforest and make it even better!

oRNiNG is tHe best time for bird watching, so why not join the sunshine Coast chapter of Birdlife Australia for guided morning bird walks through beautiful Mary Cairncross scenic Reserve. the reserve is home to hundreds of species of birds, including the spectacular Paradise Riflebird, the enigmatic Noisy Pitta and the striking Regent Bowerbird. BYo binoculars if you have them. After working up an appetite from your morning ramble, why not enjoy breakfast at the Mountain view Cafe? Adapting for a warmer future

T

HeRe ARe MANY indicators of global warming, particularly seen in changing heat maps for areas of the northern hemisphere, let alone the periodic temperature extremes down here. Climate concerns are helping to drive some innovative science looking into adaptation mechanisms for our biota, particularly trees with a long interval between generations, and on which economies may depend. We are aware that fish species generally regarded as tropical are moving south as the seas warm and some animals are moving to higher altitudes. there’s not a lot more height left to go, so it’s inevitably a temporary solution. there are many challenges including the loss of pollinating insects, unfortunately largely due to pesticide use. Flowers are sometimes planted to link natural forest areas in an agricultural landscape. this is a “pretty” solution but more importantly the flowers are a nectar and pollen source for insects that

provide a range of essential services, including food sources for birds and frogs. Barung encourages diverse planting within our revegetation projects and it’s also beneficial to be a bit untidy by allowing some weeds (not all) and grasses to grow and flower. Regenerative agriculture which encourages species diversity in pasture is moving in the

Barung native Plant nursery

same direction. it’s a long way from the subclover and ryegrass recommendation for southern Australia in earlier days. depending of course on your forest type, plant more shrubs in the understorey and where there’s adequate light as on edges, use flowering shrubs appropriate to your area. Grow flowering, fruiting and seed-bearing plants in the garden to feed our much-loved birds and the diverse insect population. Many of our culinary herbs are favoured by solitary native blue-banded bees. We are fortunate up here on the Blackall Range that due to the hard work of Barung members and many others, creek banks are now well vegetated and serve as movement corridors. We can all do more and will need to. trees lower local temperatures and help our wildlife adapt to a warmer future. We may choose to move further south, but they cannot.

His MoNtH A wonderful new book, The Magic of Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, will hit the shelves. this book depicts the flora, fauna and fungi of the beloved rainforest reserve and describes the fascinating diversity of the natural systems within it. What is truly unique about this beautiful hardcover publication is that it has no photographs. instead, it is illustrated with 126 original artworks of watercolour, acrylic, oils and carvings. 16 renowned artists and 11 scientists have come together to offer their impressions of this diverse living botanical museum. What is even more remarkable is that the artists and scientists have made their contribution in kind: all profits from the book will support projects that benefit the Mary Cairncross Reserve. these projects will be carried out by the Friends of Mary Cairncross (Friends). this book is the brainchild of beloved local scientist and artist in his own right, dr Les Hall AM. sadly, Les passed away before the book was completed. “Les had a vision of a book that married two of his favourite things – his love of nature and art,” explains Friends President, sue Morgan. “From this vision, the whole project was born. other artists and naturalists rallied together, and now, in 2019, Les's dream has become a reality.” The Magic of Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve will be available from the Mary Cairncross scenic Reserve discovery Centre and local bookstores, visitor information centres and art galleries.

Birds

in our backyards by Paul Fraser and Ken Cross

W

e ARe BLessed in the hinterland to be able to see so many beautiful bird species in their natural habitat. We have over 200 species residing in a range of habitats including sub-tropical rainforest, open eucalypt forest, grassland and wetlands. Whilst some of the more common species, for example, Butcherbirds, Magpie Lark and Willie Wagtail can be seen almost anywhere, other species are much more particular about where they live. visiting different habitats will hopefully result in seeing some genuinely unique bird species. some great places for seeing some special birds include Mary Cairncross scenic Reserve, Mapleton National Park, Booloumba Creek for rainforest species.

Above: Emerald Dove Right: Olive-backed Oriole Images Paul Fraser

if you do not want to travel to the birds, you can encourage them to come to you! one of the best ways to see birds is to attract them to your property.

- don’t feed the large meat eaters. Butcherbirds (including Australian magpies), Currawongs and crows will not only eat the food that you give them, they prey on small birds and nestlings, and may, in time, dominate your area.

depending on circumstances, the best way to achieve this is by a combination of appropriate native vegetation and bird baths.

our beautiful birds are the envy of the birding world, let’s respect and care for them.

Wetland species can be found at Maleny Precinct Wetlands and Mapleton Ponds. Farmland, open forest and grassland is good for bush and grassland birds.

Some suggested do’s and don’ts; - do plant native plants. Be careful to select a range of plants that produce both nectar and fruit. too many nectar producing flowers may have the unintended consequence of attracting only Honeyeaters (especially Noisy Miners) to the detriment of other seed, fruit or insect-eating birds. - do plant a range of plant species such that there are layers for birds. For example ground covers, shrubs and trees. different species have different micro habitat preference. Your local native nursery can advise on appropriate plant species. - do provide at least one bird bath, but more would be better. Birds, and especially the smaller shy species, will be reluctant to come to a bath that has been placed out in the open. try to find a place near a shrub or garden that will provide some cover, and an escape route for them. - don’t use pesticides, rodenticides. secondary poisoning is a serious threat, not only directly, but also by altering the natural balance between the top predators and other species. - don’t maintain large areas of manicured lawn. Plant a range of native trees, shrubs and grasses, create connectivity with adjoining vegetation if possible.

I

N tHis eveRCHANGiNG world there are still some things that generally change a lot more slowly than others. that’s correct – trees! the only time they don’t change slowly is when they come crashing down on you, very quickly! this slow, imperceptible pace of change is often in contrast to the hectic pace of our technology-fuelled human lives, so walking amongst trees and simply being in the presence of these seemingly ageless giants can offer an antidote to the ills brought on by the stresses of modern life. if you observe them over a time they also teach us that it is ok to change

slowly, and also give us visual evidence that the seasons do still exist, even in the midst of our 24/7/365 busy-ness. if you are lucky enough to have one or more of these amazing lifeforms on your property, it is both an honour and

Follow ‘aboutthattree’ on Instagram, & Tony Wootton Tree Surgeon on Facebook

a responsibility. the responsibility is two-fold – to keep the tree healthy, and to prevent it from becoming a danger to yourself. this kind of management is at the heart of our business ethic, i.e., to encourage people to keep their trees, and to keep them healthy and safe. You see, trees don’t respect property boundaries, they simply exist in all our environments, contributing to our well-being in a myriad of ways. As always, I urge you to touch a tree.

From your councillor This is my last newsletter as I hang up my hat after 20 years in local government. I do so with a big thank you to the community, family and friends.

Our community, our environment, our international relations I am often asked about the differences between my early days in local government compared with today. While the number of residents I represent has increased four-fold the unchanging, big positives are the wonderful volunteers who generously serve year in, year out to ensure our villages thrive. I have been able to work with them to deliver some great outcomes. Over 20 years I have championed and overseen the development of the Maroochy Botanic Gardens Ecology Centre and the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve Discovery Centre. Both facilities have been awarded some of Australia’s highest distinctions, both were only possible because of the partnership council enjoyed with the community and both will continue to be significant in decades to come. These are just two of the small and large cultural, sporting and environmental achievements made over my tenure. There is however just one lingering challenge not realised… sealing more rural roads. While hinterland councillors

have achieved successes by way of the Rural Roads Policy, and have been instrumental in trialling innovative alternative sealing products – I’ve wanted to do more. Council has been on a sustainability journey during my time as Environment Portfolio councillor, developing its Climate Change and Peak Oil Strategy. This is the foundation for many climate change and sustainability initiatives including the Sunshine Coast Solar Farm which now offsets council’s entire electricity consumption. Our Economic Development Policy encourages and brings clean technologies to the region and we are working with all levels of government to improve mass transport. In 2017, and again in 2018, the Sunshine Coast Airport achieved Level 3+ for carbon neutrality and we are working towards international recognition as an accredited UNESCO Biosphere. We have incorporated ecotourism opportunities

through the Dark Skies initiative and partnered with other governments to develop an Australian-first investigation into the potential of blue carbon to reduce carbon emissions while creating new economic, social, cultural and ecological opportunities. Community partnerships have helped reduce waste and increase upcycling through the Smart Living Strategy and given the Coast the largest number of Land for Wildlife properties in Australia. Council land acquisitions continue to grow our conservation estate, and we are adapting to climate change through the Coastal Hazard Adaptation Strategy. I have worked hard and strenuously to showcase the Sunshine Coast to our international tourists through agricultural products, ecotourism and cultural exchanges and I applaud the work of our local artists and educators who have built strong relationships with our Sister Cities. Twenty years of dedication to local government has meant many long days and hard work, but it has also been personally very rewarding.

I have great memories of my time representing the hinterland areas, some of which I share with you in this newsletter. Twenty years ago the average division housed around 4,000 people, today we have 20,000 residents. As your councillor, I am responsible for three portfolios – Community Services, the Environment and International Relationships. These portfolios cover a large part of daily life here on the Sunshine Coast. They include diverse topics from animal management to multicultural and reconciliation plans, rural futures and ecotourism opportunities. Youth engagement and meeting the needs for cultural connectability, recognising the need for arts and sports and balancing the focus, so that all groups are represented fairly. So, ‘where to from here?’ some ask. I intend to have a good break, continue to volunteer in my chosen fields of passion, and enjoy time with my family and friends. Cr Jenny McKay

Note from the Mayor

Our region has a history that intrinsically connects with its natural landscape and waterways and the way in which our communities have developed over time reflects these connections. Our proposed new Community Strategy 2019-2041 is a product of the engagement we have

had with members of our community and seeks to reflect their aspirations for our Sunshine Coast – both today and in 20 years’ time. The collective vision of Together we Thrive is a strong common thread across all of the feedback and messages we have received in developing this strategy. The proposed strategy will be considered by council before the end of the year. What makes our community special is our ability to support and reach out, not just to our friends and family, but to our neighbours, acquaintances and community groups. disasters, we turn out in great numbers to show our commitment and we make time to share with those most in need. Working together makes for a stronger community and that is what the proposed strategy seeks to achieve. It is very much a part of realising our goal to be Australia’s most sustainable region – healthy, smart, creative. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and safe New Year. Take the time to spend with loved ones and make the most of this special time of the year. This year we have achieved some major milestones with our region shaping projects, but I’m especially proud of the work that council has been able to do with a wide cross section of community representatives to develop our proposed new Community Strategy.

UR Moods ARe largely determined by our imbalances. Constant worrying Wendy Rosenfeldt and indecisiveness indicates that the airy, light qualities of vata are in excess. Anger, frustration and impatience indicate that the Pitta qualities of heat and intensity are out of balance while depression, lethargy and feeling unmotivated are due to too much heavy, stable Kapha. How we react to situations in our lives is coloured by our state of mind and body and while we cannot always control what comes to us we can support ourselves with diet and lifestyle. Life changes, travel, cold weather and older age predisposes us to an increase in vata. excessive amounts of caffeine, over work and lack of sleep contributes further to disturbances in vata dosha. Unless balanced by diet and lifestyle, this can manifest into anxiety and even panic attacks. establishing a regular routine for eating and sleeping can help to stabilise emotions. Having your meals and going to bed at about the same time each day helps to regulate your nervous system and minimise internal stress. eating warm, nourishing foods in a settled atmosphere will also create a soothing influence on flighty, changeable vata. over work, hot weather, spicy food, stimulants and the midlife years can increase Pitta in our physiology. Pushing ourselves too hard also aggravates Pitta and we can end up feeling burnt out and irritable. Pitta is balanced by having time for fun and relaxation. While Pitta-predominant people may be excellent at organising and

making lists of what they need to achieve, they benefit from holidays where every minute of the day is not accounted for and just spending time in the beauty of nature. A diet of sweet fruits, leafy greens and wholegrains is beneficial for balancing Pitta. Adding rose water and cardamom is sweet and soothing for the emotional heart. damp, cold weather, sweet heavy food and lack of exercise contributes to a build up of Kapha. emotionally we can feel down and stuck in our thoughts and actions. Getting up with the sun, regular exercise and trying new things will help to offset the stagnancy of Kapha. Add a bit of spice to your diet and avoid heavy, cold, sweet food. Ayurveda identifies a substance in the physiology called ojas. ojas is at the junction between matter and consciousness and acts like a super fluid that links the intelligence of nature to its expressions in the mind and body. When ojas is plentiful, we feel light, clear and blissful and our overall health and immunity are strong. ojas is increased by certain foods such as ghee, pears, dates and fresh, organic food. Meditation, being with uplifting people, time out in nature and doing what we love all increase our supply of ojas. even if we are going through difficult situations in our lives we can support our emotions with our lifestyle and diet and pass through the challenges with less anxiety, anger or depression. Ast MoNtH i WRote about the benefits of coming together in small groups to expand our awareness of multiple streams of information about what is happening in the world today. i talked about the stress that permeates the body mind when one feels powerless to effectively contribute to positive change and how that disempowering stress has the tendency to stir up emotional reactions, rather than help us as individuals and collectively to work with wisdom and power by doing even small things that have been shown to be far more powerful than we might normally think. in her book the Power of Eight; Harnessing the Miraculous Energies of a Small Group to Heal Others, your Life and the World, Lynne Mctaggart shares her research on how to tap into the amazing capacity we have to contribute positive change. the organisation called HeartMath has valuable scientific information on its website showing the positive and also detrimental effect to our health, our relationships and the energy we bring to whatever we focus our attention on, and

how to use that information to create more beneficial experiences that reach into all areas of our wellbeing. indecision, a feeling of helplessness, confusion, lack of confidence, negative projection regarding our future, all impact, not only our roles on the planet, thus dispersing the power we certainly have to contribute positively, but also to our health, wellbeing and enthusiasm. As a practitioner, i find that many individuals who i speak with are experiencing more tiredness, their anxiety levels are peaking more often, their health has more downs than ups, they are confused about what to eat, and how to create the security and wellbeing they crave in the world. i do not think that we will restore body-mind balance by taking more pills, more vitamins, more holidays, or by changing jobs or partners more often. i think that we are invited by necessity to awaken, to move more deeply within, to tap into the wisdom and capacity our body and our minds have, to be part of the next wave of personal and planetary healing.

A soothing

space Kylie Gallagher, coordinator of The Sitting Room, Maleny, is passionate about helping and supporting the community and, in her own words below, is keen to spread the word about this important space for those who need respite, connection and encouragement.

eiNG A CAReR is exhausting, no matter how much you love the one you are caring for. the sitting Room is a place for carers to have time out, to sit, and just breathe. No expectations. talk if you want. Just come and be. Find a comfy chair, we'll make you a cuppa. stage one is now complete, so this means we’re at a “pop-up” stage. our volunteers have spent over 500 hours renovating the 15m x 8m shed. it’s now being used for a “mainly music” group that is very autism friendly, and a morning tea called secret Mum’s Business for mums of primary school kids and younger with Asd. it’s a place to share some wins and know there are other people who are going to “get” you which may be something you don’t find anywhere else. We know firsthand that parenting kids on the autistic spectrum

can be isolating and challenging. At secret Mum’s Business we aim to reduce isolation and stress and provide a place for mums to feel like they belong and breathe. We also promise to provide great coffee thanks to @5sensescoffee and chocolate! Coming up, we’re excited about the possibility of providing a space for an autism playgroup called BeyondPlay, run by BeyondWords therapy Centre in Maleny. this will be an incredible service for families and such valuable early intervention. our next step is to open stage two, a place that cares for carers. this will allow us to be able to run retreat days for carers, do community workshops, support groups, dad’s groups, massage chairs and family events. We need to raise $60,000 to be able to open and run

A recent Trust and Vulnerability workshop for the community, held at The Sitting Room Maleny, with Facilitator Anna Doecke and Sitting Room Coordinator, Kylie Gallagher

A HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT We enjoy a great lifestyle here on the Sunshine Coast living amongst our beautiful environment. And at council, we’re focussed on a variety of ways to protect it, including purchasing new conservation lands with your Environment Levy, and expanding the recreation and trail network. So celebrate our amazing region. Join a planting day, enjoy a trail, or experience one of our three environmental centres.

Biosphere nomination Our biosphere nomination has started its journey through the state and federal governments, for submission to UNESCO in 2020. A biosphere is a special place, where responsible development and people living sustainably, sit alongside active conservation. A UNESCO Biosphere would provide international recognition, and help us to protect and enhance our economy, lifestyle and environment for future generations. For more details visit council’s website.

t LAst, sCott MoRRisoN’s torpid government realises that it is in danger of being mugged by reality. Not yet, of course – there are still a few peaceful weeks in which ignorance will remain bliss, in which wishful thinking may be preserved in the hope of another scoMo miracle. But after the recent report from the international Monetary Fund, it is no longer feasible to pretend that the Australian economy is in safe hands and can continue to muddle through without at least a modicum of intervention. the iMF is, as always, tactful and cautious – the problem is a global one, many of the issues are beyond the control of individual governments, the international slowdown will not be countered unless the international situation can be remedied. But even within the scenario of doom and gloom, the Australian malaise stands out. Growth will be slashed over the coming year, and the little Aussie battler, the survivor of 28 years of uninterrupted positive progress, is in real trouble with no obvious relief in sight. Australia’s growth is now expected to be feebler than that of Greece, long derided as a failed economy, the basket-case of europe. the apologists insist that the comparison is absurd – Greece actually went into recession, and is now recovering from a very low base. But that is precisely the point: Greece is on the way up, while Australia is on the way down. And it is not a gentle decline, a managed correction: it is a plummet. the new figures forecast indicate a drop of more than a full percentage point in just over 12 months, a plunge of nearly a third on the earlier prediction. this is not just a minor glitch – it is a dive into the unknown. But it isn’t entirely unexpected; serious economists, notably those from the Reserve Bank, have been warning that the wheels have been falling off for many months, and that the government’s response – or rather the lack of it – has been utterly inadequate to reverse the trend.

much worse – and would have been if the reckless, destructive, wrecking-ball policies of Labor had been in play. Well, that is at least debatable – but in any case it is utterly irrelevant. Labor, as Morrison keeps telling us whenever he gets the chance, in fact lost the last election, and its former policies no longer apply - nor is it likely that they will be rehashed in 2022, not that anyone – let alone Morrison – is looking that far ahead. His hypothetical fairy story exists entirely within his own delusional bubble. screaming about $387 billion worth of new taxes (they weren’t, in fact, but why spoil a good lie) has nothing to do with anything. And bragging about all the new jobs he has created, which have only kept pace with the rate of immigration, is almost equally meaningless at a time when real per capita living standards are dropping. Morrison and Frydenberg tried to make a big deal over the september unemployment figure – it fell marginally, but only because the participation rate also dropped, indicating not that things were improving, but that some discouraged punters had now given up trying to find work. And the bad news is that the iMF reckons that not only will unemployment be stuck in the doldrums for the next two years, but it might even get worse – as might just about everything else. the RBA’s ambition for a 4.5 per cent number, which it says is necessary to start wages moving again, look further away than ever. Not much to cheer about, and given the prestige of the international body, even Morrison is reluctant to shoot the messenger. so instead, he is preparing to try and find a few more helpful envoys of his own. But first, as always, procrastinate: wait for next month’s figures, because improbably, but just possibly, the long awaited trickle of the interest rate reductions and the tax cuts will finally dribble through to a cash splash from consumers and investors alike. then the economy will rebound like an ibex on steroids, glory, hallelujah.

Morrison and his troops, especially his determinedly optimistic treasurer, Josh Frydenberg, have simply denied the bad news, and last week they continued to hold their leaky lines: this was not a time for panic, what was needed was the calm, stable and measured approach that could only be delivered from the coalition.

And if – when – that does not happen, just wait a bit longer, until the silly season, when, with any luck, there will be plenty of distractions before this year’s MYeFo is revealed.

the trouble is that the approach has been less calm, stable and measured than catatonic; in keeping faith with his quiet Australians, Morrison has been hitting the valium, sedating his denialism with assurances that even if there were a few headwinds, things could have been

Morrison’s spin doctors are presumably already massaging the unavoidable Mid Year economic and Fiscal outlook, because this time there will be no place to hide: but this does not mean they will not obfuscate and dissemble, because that is what they do. But even Frydenberg is preparing the ground for some kind of tentative back down – let’s face it, he would look pretty silly if he finally delivered his cherished surplus in the depths of a recession. so there are just visible signs of movement – come december, the situation could be reviewed. obviously the surplus must remain sacrosanct, but it could, perhaps, be shaved, tweaked a little to provide a touch of the stimulus which just everyone else has been pleading for months. even Morrison is wavering – he has suddenly discovered that surplus is not just an end in itself, but an economic tool – perhaps like himself. A surplus is predominantly, insurance against economic stagnation. And the first step is for Morrison and Frydenberg to admit the clear evidence that the stagnation exists. they may not accept the verdict of the iMF, a bunch of unelected foreigners, but if it is confirmed by MYeFo, this will be the king hit – reality will strike back. And then, merry Christmas. The views expressed in Mungo's column are his and not necessarily the views of the HT team.
