Happy New Year!

Published first Wednesday of the month editOriAl victoria Mcguin – 07 54 999 049 editor@hinterlandtimes.com.au Monday, Wednesday, Friday 9am-4pm deadline for editorial 25th of the month (news items, what’s on, creative cuts)

AM LoViNG our front cover this month, with the beautiful Mary Valley Rattler ready to take you for a ride. do you recognise the ‘driver’? Clue: he’s rock royalty! (Answer at the bottom of the page.) i am also loving the positivity in the paper this month. We have a young man trying to help save lives from melanoma (page 41), a couple who tirelessly run Lily House, a residence to help struggling and vulnerable mothers get back on their feet (page 22), and the return of Maleny Cheese, who refused to let an arson attack ruin their business (page 16). i noticed a creeping anxiety and world weariness in my bones towards the end of 2019, and i really needed some time to recharge with family. We didn’t do anything flash, just hung out by the pool, visited friends and family, popped to the beach, went for walks, watched a few films – but that was enough. i was just grateful to be in nature, in water and in the company of good people. i have always been happiest doing nothing much. does that sound lazy? i mean it in the purest sense.

Sitting under a tree, reading a good book. Savouring that perfectly brewed cup of tea. Listening to laughter. telling a stranger how lovely they look, or how good their service was, and seeing a smile spread across their face. Simple things – but the ripples of gratitude and kindness can shift our day and other people's days, and spread good feeling further than we know. So, on that note, i will wish you an optimistic January and i hope you find plenty to interest you in the first edition of the Ht for the new year. the poetry is wonderful and pertinent (page 27) and Mungo is back and recuperating, for those stalwart fans of his! We also pop regular news through the month on our Facebook page, especially if it has missed the print deadline. Remember, we always love to hear from you, whether letters, poetry, travel adventures or articles, so please keep them coming!

e WAS BoRN iNto the Great depression, leader of a church boys’ club at age 14, and preached his first sermon at 16. Neville Ross, a 90-year-old uniting Church minister of Peachester, lived his life in service to others, a calling bestowed at a young age. “it was the day when i knew life has meaning and purpose. My experience was not a religious conversion but an acceptance that there is a fundamental purpose to all beings. i committed to justice, truth, and the service of my fellow human beings, shares Neville. “My deepest conviction was and still is that life can only be lived effectively if one accepts that ‘love is the ground of being’.

Named ‘the pink parson’ because of his support of conscientious objectors at the time of the Korean War, Neville Ross attended the third World Congress Against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs in Japan in 1957. on his return, he was an advocate for banning the bomb. the church transferred the ‘tainted’ minister away from city influences to Laidley, 65km west of Brisbane. However, this is one man who would not be stifled. Six years in Laidley, a Country Party electorate, included another instance of the minister’s non-conformity with his support of local policeman and Labor candidate, Bill Hayden, in his quest for federal parliament. the family also experienced the ’59 flood where over 200 families were evacuated. “We watched as the water climbed our stairs, covered the verandah and seeped under the doors. using a table and the top of a high wardrobe, we moved two families, four of them and six of us, into the ceiling. After the flood, Neville took hold of an idea after visiting Gatton Agricultural College. turkeys would keep down the growth of grasses and weeds. He acquired two turkey hens. A gobbler visited as required. Consequently, the preacher

became a breeder of turkeys! Church camps and fostering Aboriginal and PNG children became part of life for the Ross family in support of an Australian Council of Churches program. this led to the formation of what we now know as NAidoC. “My next parish in 1963 was in Rockhampton. Because of my close association with trade union leaders during my active involvement in the peace movement, they asked me to develop a ministry for people in industry. the program was Chaplains in industry.” Neville Ross’s work in Central Queensland resulted in him becoming the organiser and first director of the inter Church trade and industry Mission (i.t.i.M.) in Brisbane. it existed in southern states, but this was a first for Queensland. Later he took up a position as director of i.t.i.M. in New South Wales. the Australian Council of Churches kept an eye on their renegade reverend and decided he was the ideal person to assist with a new program, Action for World development. it was 1969. “Some believed the Action for World development program was one of the keys to Whitlam’s election as Prime Minister because we organised an Australia-wide petition of about 73,000 signatures to get Australia to set up a separate overseas aid organisation. “that brought me into the notice of the department of Foreign Affairs which appointed me director of the unit in the Australian development Assistance Bureau, later known as AusAid, which was being set up to provide support for Australian voluntary agencies working overseas. i held that position for 11 years. “i’d visited over 20 countries with overseas aid, climbed enough mountains and fallen down enough hills, so decided to come back to the Sunshine State. “When i finished in Foreign Affairs in ‘86, i accepted a nomination for the Chairmanship of the Australian Council for overseas Aid (ACFoA), the peak body of Australian NGos working overseas. i served in that role for four years.” A special ceremony held just prior to the opening session of the uN General Assembly in New York recognised the work of ACFoA by the award of uN Peace Messenger. “Back in Canberra, i got to represent ACFoA at the opening of the new Parliament House by Queen elizabeth. As usual, esmé was well up to the occasion.”

Chris Ross of Wolfmother fame

Neville and esmé Ross retired to Coolum in 1997. As his talents knew no bounds, Neville designed their house and built on a patch referred to as ‘the sandhill’. eight years later the pair moved to a retirement village where, surprise, surprise, Mr Ross accepted the position as Chairman of the Residents Committee! Regardless of age, Neville Ross is clear thinking and passionate about several issues including climate change. His stream of thought supports research by inigo Jones, the 11-year sunspot cycle and its effect on climate. in 2009 Neville published his book Could a Christian be an Atheist? and poses the question should we have an idea of life beyond God? More recently, another book Tales from Never Land tells of his personal journey and family history. Grandfather to 18 and great grandfather to 18, he shares anecdotes of life and family. His youngest son, Chris, realised independent fame as the founding bass guitarist and keyboardist of the rock band Wolfmother formed in 2000. “they were the first Australian rock band in 25 years to win a Grammy in America. When Chris came along, he reintroduced us to being young.” Neville turns to the subject of his adored wife. “About seven years after esmé and i married, she discovered she had the ability to project energy to heal people. She practised transcendental meditation and spent the rest of her life helping others but never talked about healing or brought attention to herself. “it was because of her work in a local health centre that her most enduring project began. Many older patients moved to Canberra to be with family. However, they were often busy, and the oldies left without company or direction. “esmé secured a government grant to start a day care centre for seniors associated with our local church. the centre flourished. it went from one day to two and over 25 years later is operating five days a week.” Reverend Neville Ross led a remarkable life but it’s his family he cites as his finest achievement. “esmé and i had an incredible partnership for 66 years and our six boys are evidence of it. they’re exceptional boys.” From the time a young preacher sitting astride an Ariel deluxe Roadster motorcycle spied a 19-year-old ‘vision on horseback’ their course was set. Neville concludes: “it was different from other days…a day of destiny.”

not many businesses can boast 40 years in the same building and under the same ownership, but the Maple Street co-op can. Our Ht writer, Judy fredriksen, met with the co-op’s business manager – Peter Pamment – to discover the secret of their success.

by Judy Fredriksen

oRNe out oF necessity at a time when people were becoming disenchanted with polluted city life, the Maple Street Co-op has mocked the cynics and disproven the naysayers by going from strength to strength and celebrating its 40th birthday on december 17. But like any entrepreneurship, its modest beginnings were experimental and run entirely by volunteers. “People volunteered all day and then after a few months when we had cashed up reserves, people got paid for two hours and volunteered for six hours. then they were paid for three hours and volunteered for three, and then four hours and two, so it took a couple of years before people got full time pay,” says Peter. “that was a big moment when people got paid.” in 1979, the year the Co-op was formed, there were limited food choices in Maleny for those who were health conscious. there was only Nagy’s (now the Source Bulk Foods and Maleny Art direct) and Frew’s, the forerunner to the iGA which stocked hardware as well as food, explains Peter. the hippie movement was well established and had found its way to Maleny. Among the new settlers was a former psychology student from Brisbane – Jill Jordan (deceased), who teamed up with Mathew davies, Meg Weymark (nee Kelly), Gary Blisner, Lorna Wilson (now Huston) and John Gilpin to buy food in bulk and share. “there was stuff that they wanted, like brown rice, lentils, wholemeal flour and

things like that but couldn’t get, and so they used to drive to Nambour,” says Peter. “then they thought, why not just set up some kind of organisation to do that and it was actually Lorna who had great input into it because she came from California and there were a few food co-ops there. She had track experience of food co-ops.” From relying on volunteers and selling basic foodstuffs (including cigarettes!), the Co-op has charted a unique course in organic, healthy, lifestyle products, priding itself on being an innovator and leader. For example, they now sell cold-pressed milk which takes the raw product and improves it with new Australian technology. the process kills harmful bacteria without destroying vitamins and minerals, says Peter. Reducing our ‘plastic’ footprint is another area where the Co-op leads by example by selling goods in bulk – people can bring in their own jars and packaging. “We do a lot of bulk stuff: bulk olive oils, peanut butter, detergent … you can bring your own bottles to put it in.” the handful of volunteers has grown to include two store managers, 15 part-time staff, 50 local consignors (suppliers) and 900 members. this boutique lifestyle business now contributes $600,000 back into the Maleny community through wages and consignment every year. Peter is full of praise for the staff, most of whom he says are young women who are passionate and dedicated in sourcing the best products and trialling new ideas. one of the motivating factors is the lack of knowledge or awareness of the average shopper towards harmful chemicals and gases used on fruit and veggies. “We try to stick to our core organic products. People just don’t realise if you go to other shops where they are mixing organic veggies and non-organic veggies, the chemicals they put on those, and the gases, can be crosscontaminating.

The Maple Street Co-op today

“to most people it doesn’t matter, but if you are on chemotherapy and trying to eat a special diet, or if you have a nut allergy, it doesn’t take much for someone to have a reaction. “A lot of our members have confidence in us as a business to supply them with quality products with some research behind them. We research our products; we try and find out as much as we can. We only have cosmetics we know are not tested on animals. We talk to other suppliers, we follow them up.” obviously the Co-op’s business practices are holding it in good stead with plans now in place to expand. With a catch cry, No GM, no products from firms that are exploiting the environment or people, that’s not surprising in this modern era of social consciousness. And their 40th birthday party is attestation to that. the celebrations began at the Maleny Christmas Street Carnival with members enjoying Kombucha champagne and birthday cake. Next comes the 40-day sale starting January 14 – the anniversary of the day the store actually opened – to be followed by a formal event in February. As for the secret of their success, Peter puts it all down to the business being owned by the members, so all the benefits flow back into the Maleny community. Personally, i think friendly customer service has to be high on that list too. i also have no doubt that the Maple Street Co-op will be around long enough to celebrate another 40 years, constantly leading the charge on chemical-free foods and healthy lifestyles, supporting local producers and suppliers along the way and all the while, quietly shaming the multinationals. Happy 40th birthday Maple Street Co-op.

the head of the nambour Police Station is Senior Sergeant Police Officer in charge gary Brayley, a bit of a local legend with a career in policing spanning 30 impressive years. Ht’s rebecca Mugridge enjoyed learning more about all that his police work entails.

DYING WITHOUT A WILL – WHAT HAPPENS? In the last two issues of Hinterland Times I have been discussing the requirements of a valid Will. I thought it would be a good opportunity to continue the train of thought with what could happen should you die without a valid will. If a person dies without a valid Will, that person is said to have died “intestate”. Dying without a valid will or ‘intestate’ can be very detrimental to your loved ones and also very expensive. Not only have you given away your ability to decide how your estate is to be distributed and to whom but you also run the risk of the costs of administering your estate increasing drastically and your estate being distributed to unintended beneficiaries. One example of an unintended beneficiary is an estranged spouse from whom the deceased was not formally divorced. That estranged spouse will share in the deceased’s estate under the Queensland intestacy rules despite the deceased and the estranged spouse not being in a relationship at the time of death.

by Rebecca Mugridge

t

Above: Overseeing it all - Senior Sergeant Police Officer in Charge, Gary Brayley, is the centre of operations for the Nambour Police Station Below: Rotary Police Officer of the Year Nominee, Gary Brayley

The Succession Act sets out the rules to be applied in situations of intestacy. Here are some examples: • If you are married/de facto with no children, your spouse takes 100%; • If you are married/de facto with one child your spouse takes the first $150,000.00 plus the household contents. Assets after this are divided equally between the spouse and the child • If you are married/de facto with two or more children your spouse takes the first $150,000.00 plus the household contents. Assets after this are divided 1/3 for the spouse and 2/3 equally between the children. In situations where you do not have any close relatives the rules provide that your estate must go to relatives that are further removed from you. Another problem with dying intestate is the need for court approval for the appointment of someone to administer your estate. In a will you would appoint an executor of your choice. However with an intestacy, your loved ones would have to apply to the Supreme Court for an administrator to be appointed. In the absence of a suitable person the Supreme Court may appoint the Public Trustee.

An impressive combination. When i first arrive, he is finishing a special one-on-one tour with a local young man who regularly visits the station. the young man and his mother’s huge smiles as they leave shows immediately the impact Gary has on those around him, the time he has for people. Gary at the NAIDOC opening ceremony at Nambour Council Chambers

Longreach. i joined the police in 1988, so it’s been over 30 years with the last ten years in Nambour. A fair bit of my service in that time was in Central West Queensland, Far West Queensland; Far North Queensland; Normington in the Gulf; Boulia, which is about three hours south of Mount isa and on the edge of the Simpson dessert; Mareeba just near Cairns; Winton; Longreach and now Nambour.” Gary says in policing a lot can be the same, regardless of the location, and the biggest issue police deal with day-today is sadly domestic violence. “We deal a lot with domestic violence and that occurs no matter where you are.” A Nambour local, Gary is proud to be the Police officer in Charge for Nambour. “i was born in Nambour and my parents’ house is still out at Parklands. i left school at 15 to do an apprenticeship with my father as a carpenter where i stayed until i was 23 before i joined the police academy.” Gary credits an interest in policing and a downturn in the building industry at the time to the career change into

policing. A career that has seen him take on roles within the community as well. “Another role i have as a police officer is in disaster management. i am part of the local disaster Management Group and that also involves services like Queensland Health, Red Cross, department of Housing, Queensland Rail, ergon energy, all those sorts of support services and government agencies that when there is a cyclone or flood or bushfire we come together. “the police are always involved in some capacity. i was sent to Bundaberg when they had their major floods and Cooktown when they had a cyclone go through there as well. it can be very, very intense [disaster management] particularly when the disaster is unfolding and roofs are blowing off houses, water levels are increasing, and people are becoming inundated in their own homes. We are right there [on the ground amongst it] managing the evacuations and the safe places for the displaced people.” instilling the law, calming someone down in a volatile situation, helping people who have been through trauma, acting in emergencies and accidents, and deescalating situations. the skillset police need to have is wide. For a lot of people their contact with the police is minimal so they don’t always see how important and demanding the job can be. “A lot of people go through life without ever having interacted with police, the law-abiding people have no interaction with police until such time as they might become a victim of crime themselves, so there can be a bit of a lack of understanding on what we do, and what our priorities are and how busy and demanding the job actually is. “We often get requests to be at a certain location for an issue and unfortunately we can’t always get to them as quickly as we would like to, we have to prioritise our tasks and resources where the demands are greater and from time to time we can’t always be everywhere. But generally, i like to think the community does have confidence in what we do.” the intensity of the job creates a strong comradery and support system. “it is a unique occupation that probably requires a unique type of person to be in. Police are definitely hyper-vigilant. in my role, for example, even though i work a day shift Monday to Friday i am responsible for everything that happens 24 hours a day, 7 days a week so i’ve got to know what’s going on.”

Gary says they have a really strong team in Nambour. “We really support each other, and we have become close mates. A lot of people go through their entire life and never see anything that we see quite regularly. We have a reputation for a great team of people here. it’s rare that anyone applies to transfer out.” In Part 2 in February’s HT, Gary shares his thoughts about creating positive connections between the youth and law enforcement, the new police station, local requests for a central police beat, and the importance of a sense of humour!

J A N U A RY I S E Y E CA R E M O N T H ! How to take care of your dog’s eyes. Check eyes regularly. In a well-lit area, look for crust, discharge, tearing or redness. Look out for cloudiness, unequal pupil sizes, a visible third eyelid, a change in eye colour, closed eyes, or rubbing of the eyes. Check the inner lining of the eyelid by rolling the lid down. You want it to be pink, not white or red. Keep eyes free of gunk & crustiness by using a damp cotton ball & wiping outward from the corner of the eye, being careful not to scratch the cornea. Long haired/fluffy breeds accumulate tears in the hair near the corner of the eye, forming gunk that can stick to the skin & become quite sore. Long hair can also scratch or poke the eye, so trim those bangs using round tip scissors.

neighbours charlie and Zoe taylor, and their son Josh, own and manage a horse stud on the outskirts of Maleny. unlike a standard horse stud, this one is for miniature horses. Writer, Jacqui Hensel, recently went to meet the family and their small, but perfectly formed, companions.

P uNtiL 2010, Charlie and Zoe remained unaware that their true calling was just around the corner. it was then that they moved to a property in Malanda, far North Queensland, that had a couple of miniature horse mares who were in foal. this was fortuitous, as the taylors became the breed’s biggest fans and have chosen to base their work around improving the breed. A miniature horse is defined as an animal that measures, at maturity, 34 inches or under at the wither, and is horsetype, not pony-type. “there is a breed standard that should be met in many points when breeding and assessing a miniature horse. Confirmation is most important, explains Zoe. “Since then we have researched and bred and improved our bloodlines with some of the finest lines from America. We are seeing results in the show ring where our horses are taking out awards at shows such as the AMHA (American Miniature Horse Association) and the iMHR (independent Miniature Horse Registry – an Australian Association),

Charlie, Josh and Zoe Taylor

Charlie says, “it’s all about quality bloodlines and most importantly, depth of breeding. depth of breeding is a subject that Charlie and Zoe are both passionate about and it feels as though we could talk about it all day. “We had purchased some Australian horses, but then we decided we needed more modern genetics and we imported some American stock. importing itself is a pretty expensive exercise, so we selected horses with great depth of breeding, explains Charlie. According to Charlie and Zoe, a good mare and good stallion, that are both well above average with depth of breeding, will produce an outstanding foal. “Mare power can’t be underestimated; it is crucial for a successful outcome, Charlie says. “the little mare we own called treasure was purchased as a day-old filly and she is now a World Grand Champion. We didn’t buy her because of ribbons or prizes, but because of her parent’s pedigree, Zoe shares. it’s not all about breeding though, according to Zoe. “While in the uS we have sent our horses to trainers and let them go to shows because we thought it would be good for the horses to have something to do, before they go to be bred. they are intelligent animals and like to be stimulated.

“While we consider ourselves to be breeders, we are learning how to show,” Zoe laughs. “We want to have a little bit of fun with the horses too, and attending horse shows is also a chance to see how our breeding program is going by seeing what other breeders are producing.” the taylors presently have horses who are Grand Champions in Harness, and multiple Futurity winners from the AMAH World Show in Fort Worth texas, uSA, plus Grand Champions and Supreme title winners in Australia at state shows held at Caboolture and at the national level at tamworth NSW. there are many country shows that have Miniature Horse Classes, including Maleny. the miniature horse can be trained to harness and will happily pull a full-size adult in a buggy. Apart from driving classes, the usual classes are Halter (a led class), Liberty (an off-lead class) and Hunter (led obstacle class). the taylors left Malanda and came back to Maleny around 2014, where they have since built the stud and their home. “everything in the shed is built specifically for the comfort of the miniature horses. the stalls are lower so they can see each other,” Zoe smiles. “the horses like to see each other as they are social, herd animals and they like to be together. “We like happy animals, because happy animals are healthy animals. And they are out in the fields all day. the barn is a good tool to have for show horses as we can keep them in at night or when the mares are foaling; or even if the weather is bad.” i am intrigued to find out why anyone would have a miniature horse as a pet. But according to Zoe and Charlie they are great pets, who are curious and keen to be friends. “they will follow you around like a dog,” Charlie laughs, “although they are horses and have to be treated the same way you would treat a horse. “they need grooming, hoof care, worming and vaccination regimes and good nutrition, to maintain a high standard of health. We have also found that they are better in a herd environment of two or more horses as they enjoy each other’s company.” i am happily taken to see Jade, a Pinto mare with a foal at foot who has two imported parents. She is cuteness in overdrive with a tiny, fluffy mane and tail. While wary, she trots proudly at her mum’s side, showing off her pretty bay coat and beautiful movement. in the next paddock are three mares and their foals. these foals are a couple of months old and have developed their own personalities. they are keen to be petted and compete for attention from Zoe, Charlie and Josh. Charlie and Zoe along with their son Josh, have clearly found their passion project. they spend their days looking after the horses and cattle and showing potential new horse owners through their impressive establishment. With a heavenly location on the outskirts of Maleny, they are truly living their dream. If you would like to find out more about miniature horses or possibly add a miniature horse to your family, email Zoe Taylor at taylorfarm@live.com.au

oRe ANd MoRe Australians are seeking to become better informed about the dimensions of history in this ancient land. And that history of human occupation dates back 60,000 years or more, with indigenous people being the first peoples and custodians of this land. there is also a growing movement across Australia to acknowledge the realities of the frontier conflicts in our history. For several years in Maleny, there has been a Remembrance Ceremony that seeks to face, in a particular way, the human cost of those conflicts for indigenous people. there will be a Ceremony this January, during which a minute's silence will be observed to remember the indigenous people of this continent, and its islands, who lost their lives in the dispossession of their land that began on January 26, 1788. Anyone is welcome to attend the Remembrance Ceremony, on January 25, from 10am - 11am in the RSL Maleny Memorial Hall at 1 Bunya Street, Maleny. For more information contact dr Ray Barraclough: 0451 049 516, email: raybarraclough@icloud.com

ONGRATULATIONS TO THE team at Maleny Cheese for rebuilding, rebranding and reinvigorating their cheese factory and café after the devastating arson attack in September 2018. Owners Sara and Markus Bucher, and their daughter Jenn, were thrilled to recently welcome friends, local businesses, council members and the local press to the unveiling of the new logo and a sampling of the delicious cheeses on offer. (Editor’s note: my personal favourite is the Tuscan, which I could have happily devoured all afternoon!)

Montville Market welcomes a new stall y

oLANdA, oRiGiNALLY from far North Queensland and husband Raja, from the uK, are embracing parenthood on the Sunshine Coast with their two young children, darcy and dylan, after living in various countries on the African continent for the past six years. the couple recently joined the monthly Montville Market with their information stall, Sunshine coast Parents 4 climate Action, a group they initiated. (AP4cA.org) Whilst still in its first year, the membership is already over 5000. At the december Montville Market many parents and grandparents met Raja and Yolanda and their delightful babies and learnt about Parents for Climate Action. Given the couple’s backgrounds they are well qualified in understanding the realities of impending disaster and solutions to avert them.

the couple understand that we are at a ‘fork in the road’ moment that will determine the liveability of our planet and the resulting impacts on our children's future. Raja works in the area of solutions: “‘Business as usual’ is not an option any more,” Raja says, "we need to transform our economy away from fossil fuel dependency, to one based on renewables as quickly as possible.”

Yolanda is an emergency specialist and has responded to scores of local and international crises including the 2010 Haiti earthquake, 2011 Queensland floods and the Christchurch earthquake, for which she received a Humanitarian overseas Service Medal. She has most recently worked for the united Nations assisting various African countries in disaster response and preparedness.

Yolanda grew up in Mackay amongst coal miners, so she sees Australian Parents for Climate Action’s ask of ‘prioritising a smooth and fair transition for all workers and communities impacted by the climate crisis, including fossil fuel industry communities and indigenous communities’ as an important one.

Raja, an economist and former diplomat, currently works for a Norwegian company focused on unlocking renewable energy in various parts of Africa. these projects can lead to the transformation of remote African villages, such as with the installation of solar panels and storage.

“it is also important to alleviate some of this anxiety and create a sense of hope and empowerment for the children,” Yolanda adds. the Sunshine Coast AP4CA are hoping to hold sessions informed by psychologists on how parents can talk to their children about climate change.

i

AM VeRY FoRtuNAte to live in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, with my loving husband and three chickens. My husband and i moved from Canberra five years ago, after resigning from our intense government jobs (i was a performance auditor). i am now somewhat consumed by artistic endeavours. A complete life rewrite. For me, creating is an elegant way of increasing awareness and generating connections. it’s about stopping and paying attention to detail. Which is why i encourage people to handle and touch my work. in this way it often surprises and interests people. Jewellery in particular, has a special way of attracting attention and starting conversations. it is an expression of not just the artist’s, but the wearer’s personality and attitude. it also has an amazing ability to influence the wearer’s mood. i love it when my customers tell me about the different people who stop to complement them in the street. Polymer clay is my medium of choice. it is strong, light and flexible, with endless possibilities. With it i can create intricate patterns in vivid colours, interesting forms and wonderful textures. Being a relatively new material, it is

largely unknown in the fine art world. However, with new brands entering the market, and as skilled artists seek more versatility, this is slowly changing. i started working with polymer in 2015. i am mostly selftaught, however i was very fortunate to complete a masterclass with the late tory Hughs. tory was an

internationally recognised pioneer in polymer art. She shared a wealth of knowledge and continues to influence my work. i have also completed a number of classes with other international and Australian artists doing incredible things with polymer. i’m looking forward to seeing how this exciting medium evolves. Lily House

Lily House co-founder, Darin Browne, is trying to help young mothers build a positive future

HELPING YOUNG MOTHERS BLOSSOM young motherhood is so often tainted by dread and uncertainty, finding hope amongst the hardship can be tiring. However, the lily House charity is making a world of difference in the lives of young mums experiencing pregnancy struggles and homelessness, by offering safe living environments. We spoke to co-founder and board member, darin Browne, to discover how the charity turns these daunting situations into a chance for growth and transformation.

By Georgia Beard

A

FteR A HiStoRY of fostering girls in their home, darin Browne and his wife Fiona were inspired to create lasting change in young women’s lives. the couple pursued this vision by founding Lily House in May 2008 to provide care for young women during and after pregnancy. the couple dreamt of establishing a place to transition young women into adulthood. “We feel our calling is… to actually transform their lives so that eventually they will become contributing members of society and actually make a difference in their world,” darin said. Lily House is first a place of residence for struggling mothers. darin explained the charity also offers counselling and life skills training that “many girls – especially if they’ve come out of domestic violence or off the streets – don’t have any knowledge of.

“An investment in Lily House is not investing into the lives of young girls; it’s actually investing into the future of our nation,” he said. “if we can invest in these girls to take them off the social security roundabout and make them productive members of society, that eases the load on everyone.” However, earning enough funds to support their residents remains a challenge for the organisation. While fundraisers and cent auctions keep the charity afloat, darin believes Lily House won’t survive without constant financial support. “if we don’t get some sort of government funding, it’s going to be very difficult to continue,” he said with palpable concern. “We need someone who can come in and really give us a substantial amount of money and help us out.”

in September this year, Lily House received funds from the ‘Helping Hands’ fundraiser at Secrets on the Lake in Montville. “We do our bit on a very limited budget to care for those girls,” darin shared. “We would love to receive any help that we can. “We’re really looking for people who have a vision for the future for our nation. Because if things keep going this way, i really fear for future generations. “this is about breaking a tragic cycle in our nation. it’s not about running a charity or trying to raise money; it’s about making a difference that will last long into the future.”

Many readers tell us they enjoy our Q&A with a local hinterland business, so this month it’s time for Mark and Andrea Porter, owners of Maleny Hardware and Rural Supplies, to be in the spotlight!

Biz Quiz Where did you grow up? Mark - i grew up in tayport, a small village in Scotland on the North Sea which spawned a love of fishing and a career in Marine Biology and Aquaculture. For the next ten years i worked between Scotland, Norway and Spain on Atlantic salmon, cod and sea bass. in 2000 i moved to tasmania to lecture and work with the growing fish farming industry. Andrea - i am a Queenslander through and through. Growing up in Brisbane, i only moved away when Mark and i moved to tasmania for work and to raise our young family. What made you move to the hinterland? Mark - during our time in Queensland we both spent a lot of time on the Sunshine Coast and Currimundi in particular. our goal was to retire to the Sunny Coast, however after 14 months doing a big lap of Australia in a 4Wd and camper trailer we decided to settle in the hinterland and have put down roots in Conondale which we love, and the children have now settled into the Conondale School which has been fantastic. How long have you been running Maleny Hardware and rural Supplies? And what did you do before this? Mark - it’s now been two months since we bought the business from John Jeffrey. Since then we have been trying hard to give the store a bit of a makeover. We have also been working hard to review prices and ensure we are competitive,

Mark and Andrea Porter of Maleny Hardware and Rural Supplies

although with 20,000 products it takes time and we hope to be completed early in the new year. We are also working on extending our range of plants and ornamental pots and our new garden centre area will be open in January. Andrea - Neither of us have a background in retail, however, Mark has a business background and was Ceo for one of the tasmanian salmon companies before we started travelling. He also has an aquaculture consulting business and we have a small farm in Conondale, so we understand rural needs. i was in administration working for a legal firm in Brisbane CBd before taking time off to raise our young children. do you have any funny/unusual stories from your work? Andrea - We have an eclectic range of customers through the shop and a range of furry friends as well. the girls from Maleny dairy recently brought ‘Survivor’, the week-old lamb, into the store to get his bag of lamb milk replacer, which was a great crowd pleaser and an opportunity for a photo shoot! We also have an amazing number of people who come to the desk and ask for “do you have a thingy”, luckily, we stock a wide range of thingys in all sizes and can always help! What do you enjoy the most about your business? Mark - Meeting the locals and it’s always rewarding when you can solve people’s problems and needs. in a very short time, we have got to know a huge number of

people and businesses who have wished us well and welcomed us to the Maleny community. What does a 'typical' day entail for you? Andrea - At this time of year our day usually starts at just after 4am when we feed our animals (goats, sheep, pigs and murray grey poddys) and then take our German Shepherd dog for a walk through the paddocks to check the cattle troughs and droughtmasters. the store opens at 7.30am so we need to be away from the house by 6.45am. the day is always busy and as we are expanding our product range and reviewing current prices, it’s 5.30pm before we know it! Thanks from the front line

Community praise

i am a Kureelpa local, a WiLVo and a volunteer firefighter. Whilst the volunteer firefighters and air support are appreciated by the community, i would like to acknowledge and thank some others who have been helping on the front line with us.

the guy on the slasher even spotted a spot fire that had not been picked up. He came over and told us so Kureelpa could get to it quickly. A chopper was also directed to us and got it spot on. Made our job a lot easier.

thanks to your Christmas info, our family managed to attend the Montville Christmas tree Lighting event while staying with extended family.

the choppers found it easier to locate some hot spots when they were isolated. However, on occasions we needed support from above but due to smoke being so thick they couldn’t locate exactly.

Recently, as we took our positions to ensure that a fire break was successful, we had a water tank driver behind us keeping us topped up with water. We also had a dozer and a slasher clearing as needed. it was a real team effort.

i was just discussing with my husband Phil whether anyone has thought of shooting a cardboard capsule full with a powdered chemical that when burned would emit a different coloured smoke?, this may have been useful yesterday when wind speeds were low but may not work if high winds blew smoke too quickly.

Afterwards as i thanked the water tank driver, he acknowledged that it wasn’t what he expected when turning up for work yesterday. We are trained, but it was really valuable to have support from these non-fire fighters, who were also

Gloria Bell

A film by acclaimed Chilean director Sebastian Lelio, Gloria Bell is a 50-year-old free-spirited divorcee who throws herself into the LA nightclub scene, where she enjoys uninhibited dancing and meeting new men. if all this sounds rather trite, it is Gloria’s complex character – at once assertive but vulnerable, independent but lonely, living in the moment but bored – which makes this an exceptional film. And it is Julianne Moore’s stunning portrayal of Gloria on which the whole film depends. John turturro plays Arnold, her romantic partner. January 11, Maleny Film Society, Maleny Community Centre, 23 Maple Street, 7.15pm, tickets on the door.

Farmers’ food and stories And for food lovers, check out Farmer: Recipes and Stories from the Land, an Australian cookbook composed of recipes from some of Australia’s favourite cooks and chefs, such as Stephanie Alexander, Maggie Beer and Matt Moran. i love that they’ve included some local touches to traditional recipes such as the use of fingerlime pearls to decorate a lemon tart and bakeless cake for those days when it’s too hot to put on the oven. this book was created to raise funds to help Australian farmers and includes some beautiful photos and anecdotes from the land. (All book proceeds to the cause.) Review by Kay Nixon, The Little Book Nook 4-6 Little Main St, Palmwoods

Malamander if you know children who like a great story that’s not too scary but just enough to keep you tingling then this is the book for them. Malamander by thomas taylor is set in the town of Cheerie-on-Sea but the ‘Ch’ has dropped off the sign so now it is aptly ‘eerie-onSea’. the main two characters haven’t had an easy life but find friendship together. A resourceful boy and a feisty girl try to solve the mystery of the malamander. A great blend of fun and adventure for children 8-13 years. F You ARe PLANNiNG to sell your property for the best market price in 2020 then choose Brant and Bernhardt Property. Predictions from leading property experts across Australia are that our property market will experience a rise in activity in 2020. According to realestate.com.au the median house prices in our local area have continued to rise during the southern downturn and we have a higher demand than the average Queensland market. the two largest southern markets, Melbourne and Sydney, have had a strong rebound and price growth in recent months since bottoming out in June 2019. these markets are into their fifth consecutive month of price gains and these buyers flow through to our market, which should in turn have a positive impact on our local housing market.

the Brisbane market is also in recovery, be it at a slower rate, and we do see quite a few Brisbane buyers moving to the hinterland for a tree change and more relaxed lifestyle. Auction clearance rates are up in most capital cities which is also a positive sign and points toward a stronger market ahead. Home buyers appear to be back and there are more properties coming onto the market. investors are slowly returning and there is also opportunity for first home buyers with record low interest rates and less stringent lending criteria. All this points to a bigger and better market in 2020. to achieve the best possible price for your property in 2020 call Susan (0428 573 190) or dee (0423 259 931) today.

ife leSSOn #1: No matter how tough you think your life is at times, there’s always someone who has had to face challenges even tougher. these challenges come in many formats – from making money to getting food to having a safe and comfortable place to rest at night. At this time of year, we go about our Chrissie shopping, whether it’s from local businesses, the Plaza or online, we buy our loved ones gifts and special things without a second thought. But… what would you do if you didn’t have food or gifts this Christmas? that is why Brant & Bernhardt Property decided to team up with Chappy Becky to run our toy drive - a great success. We would like to thank all those who donated toys, gifts and

food to support this cause. Susan & dee thoroughly enjoyed putting together the Christmas Goodie Hampers with Chappy to give to families in need, along with presenting an iGA gift card to the Neighbourhood Centre to aid in buying goods for their Christmas Breakfast. Giving back – when you give, not expecting anything in return. No benefit, no recognition, no advertising or gain. the biggest and sole reward is knowing that your actions have put a smile on a child’s face and changed someone’s life. our daily activities shouldn’t always be geared toward making our businesses grow, but to make us grow as human beings. Sri Lanka

Pearl of the Indian Ocean

i

t WAS A LoVe oF colour and fabric that first drew me to Sri Lanka. i was designing and printing my own fabrics by hand when a friend gave me a colourful Sri Lankan table cloth. i remember sitting with a cuppa one day and really noticing the cloth. it featured an amazing, rich blue colour that i hadn’t been able to recreate in my fabrics. i needed to go to Sri Lanka and learn how to make that colour. My decision led me on a fascinating journey and began a life-long love of Sri Lanka and her people. Sri Lanka is known as the ‘Pearl of the indian ocean,’ an ancient land of enchantment and beauty. Rolling hills are covered with lush, green tea plantations producing some of the most flavoursome teas in the world. it is home to many rare birds, marine and land mammals and is rich in natural treasures. You can sit at the feet of Buddha, delight in one of the most scenic train journeys, come face-toface with rescued elephants or catch a wave at some of the best surf beaches in the world. Sri Lanka’s native history dates back 2500 years followed by dutch, Portuguese and British settlements as seen in the remarkable architecture and remains of palaces and monumental buildings. What struck me was the friendliness of the Sri

Lankan people as they happily shared their stories and craftsmanship. i met handloom weavers, furniture makers, wood carvers and yes, i learnt how to make that blue! each village brought new joy to my senses; from markets filled with the aroma of exotic spices to the feel of bright, handwoven fabrics and everywhere i turned people with warm hearts and welcoming smiles. And the food - so many exotic, tantalising taste sensations, from authentic Sri Lankan cuisine to Western and Asian inspired dishes. After returning home, i decided i wanted to work with the wonderful craftspeople i had met, to create a source of income for them by introducing stylish Sri Lankan products to Australia. i returned months later and my idea was welcomed with open arms and so a new, collaborative business was born. Visiting Sri Lanka over many years and working with her people has reinforced my belief in the oneness of humanity and the need for us to care about each other, learn from each other no matter where we come from. i now host small tours for people who want to discover Sri Lanka beyond the tourist trails and into the heart of the country; to truly experience its people, culture and beauty. Heather’s next fully escorted tour is June 3-18, 2020. For further information, contact Heather on 0400 475 909 or hkmwestwood@gmail.com

In the Wild

Rivers of Life

r

eVeGetAtiNG RiVeRS and creeks can be tricky to say the least. You have to deal with floods, erosion and often frost. However given a few tricks of the trade you can still restore tree cover to creeks that will in turn, reduce erosion, provide shade and provide complex habitat for all the animals in and along the waterway. First step is to get your head around the technical lingo of revegetation. River and creek banks are now referred to as “Riparian Zones”, snags or dead trees in the water are called LWd (Large Woody debris) etc. Ahhh for the good old days when a river bank was a river bank and a dead tree in the creek was just that! these terms can be handy however if you are seeking funding for restoration worksa. Any vegetation on a creek bank is better than none, and this also includes woody weeds. ideally management of weeds should see a gradual transition to native vegetation rather than wholesale removal of weed at a cost to bank stability, shade, habitat etc... Quite often we don’t consider planting or retaining a wide enough strip of vegetation along the river bank. At a minimum revegetation should be planted all the way to the top of the bank and preferably beyond this by at least 10 to 20 metres. this allows for the development of a wide strip of root mat to bind the whole creek bank.

Lomandra are great for riverbank stabilisation, they are tough, flood resilient and long lived. Planted at half a metre to one metre centres they will provide a solid cover to stabilise areas of high erosion potential, once established. Jute or Coir mat blanket mulch may be required to assist this establishment. Jute mat can be a costly but very effective way of establishing groundcover vegetation and providing temporary stabilisation to creek or riverbanks. Pick the right trees for the right river or creek. Waterhousea (Waterhousea floribunda), River Sheoak (Casuarina cunninghamii) and Black ti-tree (Melaleuca bracteata) are fantastic on lower altitude creeks and rivers, Blackbean (Castanospermum australe), Syzygium francisii, Small Leaved Fig (Ficus obliqua) are just a few of the rainforest species great on the range (if you can beat the frost). Revegetation of creek and riverbanks isn’t an instant fix, and given the dynamic nature of our waterways the creation of a perfect, erosion free, stable environment is not only impossible, but perhaps not even natural. Waterways are dynamic, complex, changing environments – what is certain is that we need to reinstate trees and woody vegetation back along our waterways, for water quality, land management, habitat – and so that we have a nice cool place to swim on a summer’s day!

A New Year

2

019 iS BeHiNd us but it’s still summer and time to start assessing what we can plant in the future, both in the revegetation and in our gardens. Next summer may be different but with extended fire seasons and a drying climate we probably will have to reconsider our options. Let’s start on a positive note and consider what we can do. We have a range of soil types, drainage patterns and access to water, so everyone will be different and need to observe their own patch. in the garden some apparently hardy shrubs may not have survived. in many cases it’s been the high temperatures rather than lack of water that killed them, so growing in light shade rather than full sun may be the solution. Plants with soft leaves will require shade but establishment in existing rainforest situations can be tricky due to root competition. Look around, and ask your native plant nursery staff, to find out what may be suitable and available, depending

on soil type. in full sun, look for plants with hard leaves. these are the xerophytes already adapted to dry conditions. Banksias with their tough foliage, hakeas with needlelike leaves, many of the bottlebrushes, and the ground-cover grevilleas with narrow

needle tipped foliage seem to be survivors. Chrysocephalum apiculatum (Billy Buttons or Yellow Buttons) is remarkably hardy as are several other members of the daisy family. the grass trees, Xanthorrhoea species, are wonderful accent plants. there are several local to our area. out in the paddock keeping the soil cool will help to retain moisture, so a ground cover of grasses and low forbs (including weeds) isn’t a bad thing. the birds and insects will thank you for it anyway. Nectar and pollen are in short supply in this weather. Plant some colourful wattles. once established, Syzygium australe is deep rooted, provides shelter for birds and also wind protection along edges. once the rain comes, we can resume planting. We may just have to vary the species mix.

N

AtuRAL do-it-YouRSeLF cleaning solutions are on the rise once again, as people become more aware of toxic chemicals damaging their health, their water supply and the environment. there are some staples it is always good to keep in the cupboard and fridge. vinegar: the slightly acidic nature of white vinegar makes it effective at dissolving grease, soap scum, grease and lime deposits from smooth surfaces in the kitchen and bathroom. it’s also gentle enough to use on hardwood floors. Mix 1/4 to 1/2 cup of vinegar with water in a bucket or spray bottle and use it to clean everything from windows and mirrors to toilets and floors. use undiluted vinegar to tackle tougher cleaning jobs. Baking soda: to clean and brighten, sprinkle hard surfaces in the bathroom and kitchen with baking soda and rub into a paste with a wet cloth, then rinse and wipe dry with a clean cloth. A messy oven? Allow the paste to set for several minutes before rinsing. Sprinkle baking soda onto carpets and vacuum to freshen fibers, as it also deodorizes. lemon juice: this magic citrus kills mould and mildew, cuts grease and leaves a streak-free shine on hard surfaces. Add lemon juice to olive oil or vinegar to make cleaning products more effective, and to leave a fresh scent behind. Olive oil: Blend 1 cup of olive oil and 1/2 cup of lemon juice in a spray bottle, mist onto a soft cloth and polish wood furniture - you will moisturise the wood and leave a lovely shine. Hydrogen peroxide: Hydrogen peroxide is excellent at lifting stubborn mess on surfaces, and also bubbles away at perspiration stains on white fabrics. Fill a spray bottle with a peroxide and water mixture in the laundry; spritz spots and rinse with clean water before starting a load.

Fish at desalination plant Image McLennans Diving Service

FRANZ LOORS

N

eW ReSeARCH, led by Southern Cross university, has found an unexpected benefit at the Sydney desalination Plant: the excess salty water discharge attracts lots of fish. Lead researcher, Professor Brendan Kelaher from the university’s National Marine Science Centre, said there was an almost three-fold increase in fish numbers around the desalination discharge outlet. “importantly, the positive effects on fish life also included a 133 per cent increase in fish targeted by commercial and recreational fishers.” the Sydney desalination Plant, one of the largest in the world, was restarted in January 2019 due to the ongoing drought and below-average rainfall across catchments. it produces up to 15 per cent of Sydney’s drinking water with the potential for future expansion. “As to why fish like it so much, we think they might be responding to turbulence created by dynamic mixing associated with the high-pressure release of the brine. However, more research is needed.”

Stone the Crows! by WiLVo Sammy Ringer

i

HAVe RAiSed a half dozen or so torresian crows from nestling/fledgling to release and can say: they are incredibly stupid as babies/juveniles. they are clumsy and cute and absent-minded and remind me of nothing so much as a drunken priest wending his way from one pub to the next. And they can play dumb! You can have an adolescent who is happily self-feeding one day and will totally forget how to do it the next. And once they forget - and get hungry - your life is a misery of noise. Young crows are capable of forgetting everything except how to wear you down. You can have a juvenile in the flight aviary who is happily being fed by you each day (because, you know, he's forgotten how to self feed...) and then one day he decides you're the scariest thing since the carpet snake and will go ballistic as soon as you appear. When the juvenile becomes somewhat more of an adult and you say 'enough is enough' and open the aviary door for a soft release, you have simply transferred the problem from the flight aviary to the back yard. He or she will get up each morning and sit near your back door and shake the walls with a plaintive 'ahhhh! ahhhh!' this can go on for hours, days, weeks. they don't give up until you relent and go out with the meat mix. they will then spend all their time trying to shoo the other hungry birds away and will seem surprised when the food is gone. He or she will then resume the 'ah ahhing' that goes on for hours… As they reach maturity, something happens. Maybe the ‘smart’ gene kicks in. Maybe they simply realise they’ve worn out their baby welcome. one day, that cute, adorable, infuriating bird that’s been the bane of your life will sweep down onto the balcony rail and look at you in silence. Having studied you sufficiently, he/she will waddle a few feet this way and that, looking for signs of food. Finding no food, the bird will squat down and give you the patented ‘crow eye’ (you know the one – it says “i’m really hungry and you don’t love me anymore.”) if you continue to ignore it, the pacing will resume until they stand within inches of you. then it’s the crow eye again and a soft ‘aaahhh’. of course, you head for the kitchen and the meat mix, heart softened and memories of aggravation erased. Having eaten, your ex-baby will dance and gallump around in appreciation before rising awkwardly skywards. About this time, the bird will take to staying away from home for days on end. Just when you’re really starting to miss it, he/she is likely to return – but only to show you his/her mate. that’s nature – sex will always trump friendship. the great thing about crows is that the ‘leaving home’ period is quickly followed by the new intake of nestlings/fledglings.

i

’M WRitiNG this just before Christmas, and i got thinking about Christmas trees. A bit of research revealed that our pagan ancestors worshipped trees, and this worship survived their conversion to Christianity in the form of Christmas trees. Pretty cool, huh? it’s been extremely dry, and as a stress response some of our trees have produced spectacular floral displays, such as the Flame trees, Brachychiton acerifolius, and Poincianas, delonix regia, along Macadamia Freeway and

Beech Street in Maleny. i feel that the root systems contract in this dry time, and when the big storms that will inevitably come arrive, the trees will be less able to support themselves. i include the botanical names of trees in the hope that it might inspire some of you to also learn them, and to resonate with those of you who already know them. once i began to learn the Latin names of plants, i felt so much more plugged in to the environment around me.

Follow ‘aboutthattree’ on Instagram, & Tony Wootton Tree Surgeon on Facebook instead of being a green mass that i drove past, they became a collection of fascinating individuals, all with their different foibles and functions, and the intricacies of their connections led to a growing feeling of being totally awestruck by the miraculous nature of this creation that we find ourselves partaking in. Look for yourself, and touch a tree.

NotHeR SCoRCHiNG Hot summer continues, and one young man is determined to raise awareness of the vital importance of protecting your skin with his invention, bakslap. there has been much speculation, hope and fear of what the year 2020 will bring. For many 2019 was a rough ride, relationship Wendy Rosenfeldt break ups, changes in jobs, passing of loved ones or a health crisis. Although there is generally someone in your life experiencing these challenges at any given time, 2019 seemed to bring more and to affect more people. Not to mention local disasters such as fires and drought and ongoing worldwide tensions. Last year also seemed to be characterised by previously hidden things coming to light, increasing exposure of paedophilia in the church, the Me too movement, as well as overall dissension among the population. Protests against animal cruelty and climate change, while hailed by many, were also met with resistance both from the public and the government. While the approaches may have lacked diplomacy, raiding farms and accusing people of creating mass extinction is going to get people’s backs up, it does exemplify the frustration of the general populace that the leaders of this world are not listening. if the protestor’s approach seemed dramatic, the reaction was equally reactive. the vegan protests resulted in people resolving to eat more meat to spite them. Greta thunberg’s speech about climate change was met with patronising comments and personal insults. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, founder of the transcendental Meditation organisation, talked about a phase transition, when the world would move to a more enlightened way of being. He said for order to be established, disorder has to be shaken. the turbulence is going to happen but how smooth or rough it is depends on the state of our consciousness of the people. Known subjectively by enlightened people and more recently

verified by quantum physics, there is a level of life where everything is experienced as unified. Science identifies this subatomic level of life, the unified Field, to be the basis of all life. Being the basis of all life it is the basis of every individual. the mind has the ability to transcend and experience this unified state. When the awareness has expanded and has stabilised this experience of unity, then the turbulence in daily life is felt like the waves on the ocean if you are sitting at the bottom of the ocean, as opposed to being buffeted about on the surface. But this state of consciousness is even more than just a way to pass through these upheavals with equanimity; it goes hand in hand with the ability to operate from this level of life so that any actions are done without upsetting any other area of life. When the mind comes from this level, any thought or action will be done in harmony with everything else in the universe. Any gardener knows that it is not enough to just notice that the fruit is part of the tree and that the tree has roots, the roots also have to be watered. transcending is that ancient technique that has done this throughout the ages. it is a way of expanding the mind to comprehend the bigger picture while simultaneously nourishing the surface value of life. When this becomes a living reality we can have a health care system that doesn’t make people sick, an education system that develops the student’s full potential, a government that nourishes and unites society and religious/spiritual groups that bring people to enlightenment. eAVe tHe SuGAR (cane) filled treats alone, they will disrupt your body, mind and emotions, they will cause you to feel sluggish and possibly will make you more vulnerable to picking up a virus. Sugar robs your body of B Group vitamins, these vitamins support your nervous system. Sugar does this by making your body acid and this interferes with your absorption of nutrients. You can eat fruit and lots of healthy honey or maple syrup sweetened treats. Some people find coconut sugar works for them and others prefer Stevia, a plant-based sweetener that tastes nice and does not play havoc with your body. there are many other choices you can make for a dessert that won’t disrupt you or your loved ones’ health. Stay away from gluten (present in all wheat-based products) as much as you can. Your body will thank you for it and you’ll probably be spared that bloated feeling and appearance at the end of the day. Let your food contain less chemicals and more natural

nutrients and be sure to drink lots of purified water. if you like eating fatty foods, consider having a cup of dandelion root coffee after the meal. Change of our routine tends to encourage the mind to give the body lots of relaxation time, which is good, as long as that includes gentle exercise so that acid doesn't build up in your joints and give you that “i feel tireder than my years” feeling. Get plenty of sleep, it’s the time your body does most of its repair work. Catch up on the time you spend with the family now that you don’t have to stick to your normal busy routine. Your children and loved ones will appreciate it so much. think about this year which will soon pass, what do you wish you had done differently? Surprise!! You get another year to change it all. Go to notes on your mobile phone and life coach yourself, write letters of encouragement to yourself. Make this the first thing you read each morning. Make 2020 a fabulous happy year for you and your loved ones.

N ew year New health goals e

XeRCiSe PHYSioLoGiSt and Pilates instructor, Stephanie Allen, shares her top tips for a healthier 2020. “it’s so important to find time to invest in your own health and wellbeing. As a mum of three myself, i know i’m better equipped to care for my little ones when i’m feeling fit, strong and healthy.”

#3 Plan Place your exercise days into your calendar and commit. Now don’t be cancelling on yourself, exercise is just as important as sleeping and eating.

#4 Keep it fun

five tips to get you on the right track for 2020: #1 Find Your Motivation and Why What is motivating you to make a fresh start to your health and wellness journey? do you want to feel more energetic, prevent chronic health conditions or look and feel better in your clothes. Whatever the reason, remember the why and let it inspire you to keep you focussed.

#2 Make it a goal Set yourself a SMART goal Start with a goal which is important to you, write it down and place it somewhere where you will see it daily like the fridge, bathroom mirror or next to your bed to keep you motivated and on track. the goal should be challenging but achievable and if you can try and make it relevant to an event, such as local events like Landsborough trail Run, Yandina Spartan, Sunshine Coast Marathon and/or Noosa triathlon, this will keep you even more focussed.

Find something you enjoy as your health journey should be a longterm commitment, there is no point running the streets if it hurts your knees and ankle joints. there are plenty of physical activities to try, you can keep it simple with a walk or cycle, try a Pilates class for strength and tone or join a sports club to keep it sociable.

#5 Train with family or a friend there is nothing better than some family/friendly support to keep you on track with your health goals. Work together, challenge each other and have fun. Stephanie runs Range Pilates Studio in Mapleton, and offers Reformer and Group exercise classes that are suitable for all levels from beginner to advanced, with a strong focus on correct alignment and technique.

uR PeNteCoStALiSt PRiMe MiNiSteR may have been a little disappointed by Christmas. No wise men showed up bearing gifts – ScoMo probably didn’t need a lot of frankincense and myrrh, but a bit more unearned gold would always be handy, although declaring it as a foreign donation might be a bit awkward. And hordes of caring worshipful shepherds did not flock to his side – as usual, he had to make do with his usual army of mediocre minders and slippery spin doctors. the ever-reliable choir of angels from the Murdoch press sang his praises as they always do, but even they could not muster much enthusiasm for tidings of great joy hallelujahs and hosannas were a bit sparse over the festive season... they will not desert him, of course – he is their man, at least until a more effective candidate comes along, preferably one even further off on the lunar right. But after a year of gaffes and dithering, even they are being forced to acknowledge that Scott Morrison is not the messiah. And on the other side of the ideological divide, it has become clear that he is not just a very naughty boy, either – he has now been revealed as a dangerous incompetent, an opportunist populist combining policy vacuity with a reckless opportunism and a political tin ear. He has already done real damage to the body politic in sins of both commission and omission, and there is plenty more to come, because Morrison is utterly unrepentant – he thinks he can talk his way out of anything, so there is no reason to believe that he has any interest in becoming a serious prime minister. No leader with an ounce of caution or integrity would have surreptitiously left the country in a time of national crisis. And then to express regret not for his uncaring arrogance, but because he knew Australians were anxious that he should return, was so vain and delusional to defy reality. Australians were and are not anxious, pining for his presence; they were and are angry about his uncaring negligence.

And the excuse that he could not hold a hose did not help. A number of them have had to learn the hard way and heck, how hard is it anyway? even tony Abbott can do it. Perhaps it is time to check whether Morrison can tie his own shoelaces without help. the lack of empathy is compounded by the silliness – and nothing has really changed since one of Morrison’s first captain’s calls, his counterproductive demand to move the Australian embassy in israel from tel Aviv to Jerusalem. He was talked out of that one, and presumably was similarly persuaded to limit the fall-out from his latest gaffe by returning to Australia as soon as he could find a suitable flight – it was not clear whether he was waiting for an upgrade to first class for himself and his family. And his return, rather than being celebrated near and far as he apparently expected, was greeted with resentful indifference, a mood which is starting to settle in over an electorate which was hoping for rather more than the inertia which has gripped the government since the last election. it has now become obvious that Scott Morrison is simply not up to the job – that the miracle has failed. this is not really surprising; he wasn’t up to his last job either, having been fired as head of New South Wales tourism. But there was hope, although not an expectation, that new leadership might cut through the malaise which bedevilled five years of the dysfunctional coalition. instead, Morrison has only coasted on the result of his unforeseen and unlikely victory. He had not prepared an agenda for it, and it has shown – indeed, it now seems that he is not really interested in agenda, even if he is capable of devising one. He has been labelled a transactional prime minister, as opposed to a conviction prime minister, but even that is selling him too high; Scott Morrison is the archetypal reactive Prime Minister, bereft of vision, immersed in adhockery and negativity. even in the bushfire crisis it showed; for days, even weeks, Morrison insisted that everything that needed to be done was being done, both the professionals and the volunteers were getting all the help that they required. But in the wake of his aborted vacation, he belatedly responded to Anthony Albanese’s plea to at least offer more paid leave for his commonwealth public servants out in the field. Which, of course, left the problem of the weary volunteers who work in the state and private sectors. Morrison urged employers to do the same for them, but it might have been smarter to have set up a deal in advance. However, that would have taken planning, putting forward a sensible and considered program, something of which ScoMo is manifestly incapable. Like tony Abbott, he has no real concept of public administration – he is only confident when he is attacking his opponents. And so far it has more or less worked. He has spent the best (or worst) part of a year living on the kudos of his election win, and his quiet Australians remain quiescent, either content with his schedule of masterful inaction, or resigned to the fact that this is just the way it is, there is nothing they can do about it and it’s not worth trying to change it. He is still obviously acceptable to the electorate, but there are signs that early gloss is wearing thin, and that Albanese, though a long way from being embraced, is showing the beginnings of being seen as a viable alternative. Christmas provided a little welcome rain – probably Morrison, Barnaby Joyce and their fellow evangelists even believe that their thoughts and prayers were effective, but there is a long way to go. the current fire season will come to an end and at least some of the angst will be abated, but there are two more fire seasons to be negotiated before we are due the next election. And by then, pleading to the heavens, and slagging off at Greta thunberg, is unlikely to be enough. The views expressed in Mungo's column are his and not necessarily the views of the HT team.
