1. Who we are

Hinterland Studio are chartered landscape architects, with extensive experience of working in architectural design studios on projects within the UK, as well as in Europe and the Middle East. Our expertise is based on a broad range of landscape project knowledge gained over the years at various professional practices, and spans from large scale masterplanning through to individual local public and private garden spaces.

At Hinterland Studio, we believe that the design process should be a collaboration between us as designers and our clients, to ensure we achieve the best possible results. We love to create interesting and immersive spaces and places that are rooted in their environment whilst being responsive to the needs of our clients. Creativity is our key focus. We love to use interesting form, colour, texture, scale, and planting to create rich and evocative spaces.

We look to bring heart, soul and fun to our projects wherever we can. Our designs develop from our research and analysis of places, creating concepts that respond to the history and stories of places. We approach all of our projects in the same way, regardless of scale. We carry out detailed analysis and background research, looking at climate, topography, history, natural resources and more, drawing together all of the threads that make places. This leads us to designs that become the future identity of the site.

Public Realm Projects

Seeb Beach, Oman

Year completed: 2020

We were lead landscape designers whilst in a previous role for this public beachfront project in Muscat, Oman. Our brief was to activate the waterfront and create a new local destination. We proposed a series of zones connected with a fluid flowing boardwalk route, inspired by the movement of the waves on the beach. These zones were designed to be of different characters, based on characteristics of the beautiful Omani coastline (Coastal Cliffs, Dunes, Coral Reef and Seascape). Each of the zones then had a different function, which included a dining/ restaurant area, amphitheatre, outdoor gym, play zone with skate park and family bbq zone. The design centred on providing a safe and inclusive family friendly public realm that would attract the wider public and bring revenue for the local community.

St Vincent Plaza, Glasgow, UK

Year completed: 2014

We worked on the design and construction phases of this project whilst in a previous role. Terraces and steps form a new piece of public realm adjacent to a new office building on St Vincent Street, Glasgow. The design process was challenging as we needed to create useable and attractive space bounded by major infrastructure and large scale buildings. Terraces and steps negotiate the level changes and a soft landscape scheme softens the space, creating a coherent terraced landscape that traverses a 10m level change. A feature wall located at the foot of the steps highlights the entrance to the space.

Ghobash Mosque, RAK, UAE

Year completed: 2019

We were responsible for the design of a series of gardens and the main entrance around a new build Grand Mosque. The design looked to create a series of different garden spaces that provided gathering and meeting areas of different characters surrounding the Mosque.

The landscape concept takes its inspiration from historical mosque gardens and the strong rectilinear forms of the proposed Mosque building. The intent was to create a series of connected spaces that encircle the mosque, each with its own distinct character, to create a varied and inviting setting for the mosque.

Terrace Apartments, Dubai, UAE

Year completed: 2014

This landscape scheme designed whilst in a previous role focussed on landscape as part of the built form, creating an almost seamless connection between the buildings and amenity spaces. A shared amenity landscape ties the series of buildings together and includes facilities such as swimming pool, shaded seating and play facilities. The pool is to be integrated into the courtyard landscape through use of considered planting, and thoughful level changes, as this is to be situated on a green roof under which is the car parking for the development.

Each private apartment terrace is to have its own tree contained within a dedicated planter. Each terrace was also surrounded with a planter parapet which partially encloses the space and provides privacy whilst allowing some views out. Three distinct planting typologies were developed for the terraces, all of different character, whilst ensuring they would be robust enough for the climatic conditions.

The Gardens, Muscat, Oman

Year completed: 2014

We were lead landscape designers for this project in Muscat, Oman. The residential development was already under construction at the point we were commissioned, so we had to work within the defined parameters already set. This courtyard landscape was built on a green roof over car parking beneath, with the proposed swimming pool already defined in its form. We looked to create a series of garden spaces, located around the central pool terrace area, each garden with its own character based on the colours found in traditional Omani textiles; red, black, gold and white. We looked to use robust and either native or adapted planting, with an overall green palette, and each garden in its corresponding accent colour.

Roxwell Housing Development, UK

Year completed: 2020

We were appointed to provide outline landscape proposals and tree protection measures as part of a planning application for this English Rural HA development at Green Lane, Roxwell, Essex. This semi rural location, bordered by houses and fields formed part of the entrance to the village, so it was therefore important to create a appropriate street frontage landscape for the location. The soft landscape proposals consisted of native tree planting, shrub/ herbaceous planting and mixed native hedgerows.

Mistley Housing Development, UK

Year completed: 2019

We were appointed by architects George F Johnson Associates to provide outline landscape proposals and tree protection measures as part of a planning application for this English Rural HA development at Mistley, on the Stour Estuary in Essex.

Our proposals included native tree planting, shrub and herbaceous planting, with native hedgerows that tied into the existing hedgerows on the site. Key to our design was the inclusion of seasonal species that encouraged bees and other insects to create a rich and colourful scheme for this development.

Education projects

Ayrshire College, Kilmarnock, UK

Year completed: 2015

Whilst in aprevious role, we worked on this project for the Ayrshire College campus at Hill Street, Kilmarnock. The design created outward looking contemporary public spaces around the development, which helps enhance links with the local community. The design comprised a main public space at the entrance of the building, which flowed out into the wider public realm area, traversing level changes and connecting into the existing street. The planting palette included native species and areas of habitat creation adjacent to the sports facilities here. This development was BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rated.

Coastal Garden, Longniddry, UK

Year completed: 2022

This redesign of the front and back garden at a property in Longniddry was completed in Autumn 2022. The aspect of the north/ south plot means that though the back garden benefits from sun, the front garden is north facing and so therefore largely shaded. This was an established, mature garden with a wide collection of trees, shrubs and perennials.

For the back garden, we looked to largely retain the structure, and create a contemporary more youthful interpretation of a traditional garden, with its lawn, beds and borders. We wanted to bring some lightness and balance to it, with the introduction of more trees, and a more contemporary planting palette. For the front garden, our brief was very clear; to create a coastal garden. Our challenge was to create that light and airy coastal feel within an existing north-facing garden.

Japanese inspired garden, Prestonpans

Year completed: 2022

This project involved the remodelling of front and rear gardens to a property in Prestonpans. The brief was to provide a contemporary Japanese-inspired garden with architectural plantings, incorporating the clients’ existing collection of plants, with scent being a key consideration. The objective is a beautiful and inspirational garden which provides shelter and privacy where needed, without compromising the level of natural light within the space.

There is a focus on sharp contrasts of colour material, with dark colour woodwork contrasting with light colour surfaces and mixed planting. Stepping stones lead across a pool into the garden, which then allows access to either the dining area, through a defined post fence, or into the ‘island garden’.

Terraced Garden, Dirleton, UK

Year completed: Ongoing

We were commissioned to create the design for this garden with fantastic views at a property in Dirleton, East Loathian. This garden benefits from great far reaching views across the East Lothian countryside, and it was the intent of the concept to make the most of this. Proposed terraces allow views out, traversing the level change between the house and new orangery, with steps, stepped water rill and incidental integrated seating along the route. Nestled into the corner of the garden is a Japanese Tea House with an associated water pool accessed via stepping stones which looks out over the countryside.

The firepit area is located in the zone that sees the sun the longest and is connected to a simple path leading through the woodland area. The woodland is retained as natural and soft garden area, which contrasts with the more formal terraces closer to the house.

40

Urban Garden, Edinburgh, UK

Year completed: 2021

This urban garden was for a Client looking to maximise the existing space, whilst dealing with various level changes and creating a garden that had more of a ‘flow’ to it. We looked to rationalise the levels and improve the access, whilst introducing some flexible and modular screening to provide privacy to the ground floor windows. Our brief included; Introducing screening for privacy, creation of seating area, retention of existing patio area as a basketball space for their son, including a herb garden, retaining the existing shed, and improving the step access to the upper part of the garden.

Chelsea Flower Show Tradestand, UK

Year completed: 2021

In 2021 we designed and planted this Chelsea Flower Show tradestand garden for ArtFe, Scottish artists and blacksmiths. The design concept was to create the remains of a Scottish Highland hunting lodge, complete with grand old fireplace and armchair, which the landscape was slowly reclaiming. The design reflected Artfe’s fun and anarchic ethos, with elements such as the industrial take on parquet flooring and flattened oil drums to form the walls. Ferns and ivies reclaimed the building, whilst wildflowers, heathers and grasses evoked the highland landscape in the garden beyond. A group of highland cows formed a key corner feature in the garden, whilst paths leading into the space from two sides allowed visitor flow and interaction with the intricate detail of the artworks. The tradestand has been awarded 5 stars by RHS.

Chelsea Flower Show Tradestand, UK

Year completed: 2019

We designed and planted this Chelsea Flower Show tradestand garden for ArtFe, artists and blacksmiths in 2019. The concept for the garden was ‘Agroforestry’, with the relationship between trees, wildflower planting and livestock being recreated to highlight the importance of biodiversity and sustainability.

Our concept was to create garden that would translate this relationship whilst creating a space for Artfe’s unique sculptures. The garden includes romantic woodland planting providing a setting for the animals, free to roam amongst the reclaimed and repurposed farming materials, creating a fun woodland garden with attitude.

The tradestand recieved 5 stars award from RHS.
