ENGAGING + INSPIRING Established in 2003, the industrial design (ID) program at the University of Houston Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design was the first ID program in the four-state region covering Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and New Mexico. Enjoying rapid and robust growth in the region, the ID program has been recognized as a premier program not only in the United States, but internationally.

The ID program’s pedagogy focuses on knowledge cultivation, critical thinking, the art of making, applied advanced technologies, design sustainability, and interdisciplinary research. Its curriculum emphasizes generative and discoveryoriented learning, supported by a structural alignment of integrated, collaborative, and project-oriented training.

The Hines College challenges students to learn and develop creativity, critical thinking, and empathy to be reflective practitioners and design collaborators. Over the past 20 years, the ID program has sent hundreds of graduates into the industries across the world. Graduates have found success in a wide spectrum of industries, including healthcare, consumer products, furniture, advanced technology, automotive design, UX/UI design, and more.

Pedagogy and Curriculum The ID program is committed to inspiring and forming students through a systematic learning process emphasizing generative and discovery-oriented learning. In supporting open and engaging pedagogy principles, the curriculum is designed with an inquiring and challenging spirit. In most courses, students are encouraged and guided to form their critical thinking and forward their unique approaches to problem-solving and innovation. There is always a designed space for bold experimentation and failure. We believe failing early and failing fast is the most effective way of learning to succeed.

The integrated curriculum weaves together theory and practice supporting students with a holistic understanding of industrial design principles and practice, encouraging them to think critically, creatively, and sustainably.

Research Driven Innovation The ID program strives to develop capacities supporting faculty research and providing greater participation opportunities to students. The program is positioned strategically to serve as a hub for research collaboration and the advancement of interdisciplinary work.

The ID program’s vision is to lead the way in fostering innovation, creativity, and professional growth through a flexible and inspiring pedagogy of teaching and an integrated curriculum equipping our students with the skills, knowledge, and experiences necessary to excel in the dynamic landscape of industrial design.

Aligned with the College’s strategic research planning, the ID program invests in faculty and students dedicated to increasing research opportunities and funding, building/maintaining interdisciplinary partnerships, and pursuing synergistic research relationships outside academia.

The ID program encourages and offers ample research and design opportunities in competitive areas including healthcare and medical design, sustainable innovation, system-driven UXUI, service experience design, and

innovation-led entrepreneurship. The program has been successful in collaborating with industries to produce innovative solutions and IPs. We are dedicated to continue expanding our capacity and impact through collaboration initiatives and forging more partnerships.

Collaboration with Industry through ID+ Functioning as a bridge between the ID program and professional practice, expanding to a range of industry sectors including healthcare, energy, computing electronics, and consumer goods, ID+ provides a unique space for faculty and students to innovate with industry partners on research-based projects. Since its founding in 2014, ID+ has developed and organized many projects collaborating with industries and other institutions. With a fresh perspective, the synergetic collaborations have generated intellectual properties and innovative products supporting partners to be more competitive in the market. In return, our students learned and gained invaluable experience through close interaction with teams of professionals from design, engineering, and marketing.

An Online Career Center Our commitment to excellence is epitomized by our newly established Career Center, which stands as a testament to our dedication to student success.

This resource is designed to provide our students with ample opportunities for internships and career placements. At the heart of this Center lies a searchable database unlocking the vast landscape of industry segments and invaluable industry contacts.

Through this database, our students can connect with the industries and professionals aligning with their passions and career goals.

This Career Center platform offers a dedicated space for career counseling with faculty, as well as interview and portfolio preparation. We believe in learning by doing. It is hard to believe that the industrial design program has been in the Hines College for 20 years! I have had the pleasure of being with the College for 14 of those years, and I am in awe of what the program has accomplished in that time.

The ID program is the only one of its kind in a four-state region. The fact that the program exists here was an act of faith in the adage, “Build it, and they will come.”

Programs usually spring up when there is a demand and jobs await the graduates. While the fourth largest city in the United States, Houston has the largest medical complex in the country and one of the largest industrial complexes, yet it did not have a strong design community. Happily, that is changing. Some of the extraordinary talent that has come out of the ID program is one of the reasons for that shift.

We have long wanted some of our graduates to be able to stay in Houston to work rather than exporting them to New York, Chicago, San Francisco, or other cities around the world. That has changed, and now, some of our graduates have settled in Houston, establishing a nascent design culture in Houston, and this amazing city is even better for it.

As you look through the pages of this book, you will see evidence of the extraordinary work produced by the program’s faculty and students. The students

produce award-winning designs year after year. The College has come to expect that they will win the Bienenstock Furniture Design Competition for the sixth time this coming year. We assume our undergraduate and graduate students will be honored as the Southern District IDSA Student Merit Award winners. We can’t help ourselves.

a new set of design sensibilities and a striving for excellence that impacts all of the programs in the College. We can finally offer more interdisciplinary courses so that all students can have exposure to the different ways architects and designers approach design problems. ID has brought a new appreciation for interdisciplinary collaboration to the curricula.

Our ID students won over 20 awards this last year alone, culminating with Red Dot’s “Best of the Best” and the Luminary Award earned by 2023 graduate David Edquilang.

We owe a debt of gratitude to the previous dean, Joe Mashburn (’78), for his courage to start a program despite little support in the design community. We also acknowledge the past program director, EunSook Kwon, Ph.D., whose indelible imprint is evidenced in the curricular groundwork for the program and its successful march to maturity. Today, our co-directors, Jeff Feng and Mark Kimbrough, continue challenging students to achieve even greater heights. I am confident the work herein will tell the story of the universality of design and its impact on our lives.

More critical than the fact that our ID program amasses awards is the nature of the products they earn those awards for. Our students design products that can make a difference in people’s lives. They design watercraft, but not for the leisure community, per se, but for the paraplegic user. They design racing wheelchairs for high school students in adaptive sports. They concentrate on the health and well-being of the user. David Edquilang’s prosthetic hand is a terrific design, but what makes it an extraordinary design is that he consciously offered it as an open-access design product. He wanted to make the product accessible to anyone using a 3-D printer. This is what elevates his project to the extraordinary.

I am incredibly proud of our ID program. It has fundamentally changed the Hines College, bringing

Twenty years ago, the University of Houston embarked on a visionary journey. Nestled within the prestigious Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design, the seeds for an industrial design program were sown, aiming at establishing a hub of design excellence for Texas and its surroundings. The foundational years, starting in 2003, saw dean Joe Mashburn shaping its direction, aspiring to encapsulate everything in design “from a salt/pepper shaker to a space shuttle.” Under the subsequent leadership of current dean Patricia Oliver (2010-present), the program’s horizons expanded and fostered an environment championing design innovations. Having had the privilege to serve as the program’s pioneering faculty member and director for 18 years, I find it both an honor and responsibility to reflect on the program’s evolution, achievements, and transformative impact on the design community.

Phase I: Establishing BSID and MSID (2003-2012) 2003 -2006: Sowing the Seeds Foundational work marked this phase. A pivotal design workshop brought together esteemed figures like Dr. Richard Buchanan, Dr. Jacques Giard, Chris Cavello, and Larry Bell, whose insights all proved invaluable.

Embracing a constructivist approach, our curriculum, conceived in 2003, became synonymous with studentcentered, collaborative, and research-focused design education. A holistic curriculum map was posted on the wall for many years as a medium for presenting courses and our vision, strategy, and connectivity with industry and cultural sectors.

From its humble origins with just six passionate students in 2003, we shaped the ethos of a creative and supportive culture. Students stood at the heart of this evolution with the creation of the Industrial Design Student Organization (IDSO) in 2005, amplifying their voice in recruiting faculty and students. Faculty recruitment was continuously challenging, but we benefited from the contributions of versatile educators from various disciplines. Passionate educators, including Dr. Luisa Orto, Bill Price, Joe Mappelink, and others, provided the academic scaffolding during those nascent years. Dr. Luisa Orto’s commitment is particularly notable; for the past two decades, ID graduates took her design history courses and admired her passion for cultivating the meaning of products in the context of contemporary living. Adam Wells’ arrival in 2006 was a significant boost, particularly in consolidating foundational design courses, portfolio review processes, and students’ career development.

Despite the limited faculty, space, and infrastructure, we implemented new pedagogies to amplify studentcentered, collaborative learning through vertical studio projects, workshops, guest lecturers, and extracurricular activities. The ID workshop emerged as a hotspot for intensive learning modules endorsed by renowned figures from the design community.

2007-2012: Gaining Momentum This period solidified our standing in the design community. Our pioneering curriculum and research methodologies earned recognition, and our students shined at their first presentations at the IDSA conference.

The many commendations were a testament to our rapidly growing reputation, including comments from Eric Anderson of Carnegie Mellon University: “The student merit awards competition (2007) was the strongest that I have ever seen in any district…While your student was not selected as the district winner, I think it is important to share with you that Houston was the first choice on several scorecards. This is a testament to the hard work and quality education that you and your faculty have provided in just a short time. This is remarkable! Houston has people’s attention.”

Within a few years, we experienced magic. Starting with Arvin Abadilla (2010), and followed by Leo Chen (2011), our students’ names were called at the IDSA District and National Student Merit Awards ceremonies. Our students’ achievements were remarkable compared to the program’s size of 66 students with only two full-time faculty and a few lecturers. We cried and held our hands whenever our names were called. This growth wasn’t just about numbers or awards; it was about nurturing a culture of collaboration, mutual support, and relentless pursuit of excellence.

Since 2009, we worked for three years to write a proposal for establishing a new graduate program, the Master of Science in Industrial Design, emphasizing personalized curriculum and optional certificates of entrepreneurship or foresight studies. The MS ID program was approved in 2012 and launched in 2013 as the first of its kind in the region, marking another feather in our cap.

Along with the program’s growth plan, we searched for and recruited two professors in 2012, Mark Kimbrough and Jeff Feng. The new faculty team’s leadership and outstanding practices in design industries empowered our students’ design capabilities and visibilities.

Phase II: Building National and International Recognition (2013-2023) During this period, our ambition soared beyond Texas, laying the groundwork for national and international partnerships. This was marked by academic expansion, nurturing of student talent, and strategic partnerships.

The formation of ID+ and the development of the study abroad program showcased our global vision. ID+, an innovation lab, was incubated in 2012 and became a beacon for real-world research. Our collective academic and research efforts were presented in diverse media and exhibitions: ID+Green (2015) and ID+Red (2017) with a theme of sustainability and social design, respectively, featuring sponsored or self-driven projects.

The first ID-focused study abroad programs were implemented in 2015 and 2017 to provide global perspectives and immersive cultural experiences of northeast Asia: South Korea, China, and Japan.

Students traveled for 30 days to metropolitan cities and historic venues to explore traditional arts/crafts and contemporary urban mobility. We appreciated diverse global companies and esteemed design organizations welcoming our visits and sharing their advanced design exploration, policies, and challenges.

The establishment of a new MS ID program was challenging for recruiting students and building the identity of UH ID graduate studies. The ID program needed to expand to the areas of interactivity, sustainability, user experience, entrepreneurship, and

more. Through intensive national and international searches, we recruited Jorge Camba, George Chow, Min Kang, and Elham Morshezadeh, respectively in 2016, 2017, 2021, and 2022. The arrival of seasoned faculty brought with them a wealth of academic and industry insights, fortifying our academic rigor. With dedicated faculty, this program has charted a trajectory marked by rigorous academic curricula, groundbreaking research, and impactful industry collaborations.

At the heart of our program’s growth story were our students. We witnessed a surge in student achievements.

Mariel Pina (2012), followed by Juan Jimenez (2013) and Matthew Burton (2014), were the first-prize winners at the International Housewares Association Student Design Competition; Red Dot Design Awards (Hong Yen Le, Andrea Novoa 2014); Make Up New York Innovation Packaging Design (Erin Lew, Jessica Hedge, Aaron Hernandez, 2016); IDEA (Juliette Laroche 2017); Biennenstock Furniture Design (Lawrence Dillon 2018, Anna Bibikova 2020); and Paris Design Award Grand Prix and Young Designer of the Year (John Probst 2020).

This streak of accolades was not just a testament to their talent but also a reflection of our holistic education approach. Especially remarkable were the back-to-back wins in IDSA competitions in both undergraduate and graduate categories in 2019 and 2023 – a rare feat underlining our program’s exceptional talents: Timothy Joe (2019), Kristi Bartlett (Graduate, 2019), Haleigh Escene (2023), and Suochun Fung (Graduate, 2023).

The graduate projects further shone on global platforms, with multiple entries showcased at the esteemed Global Grad Show in Dubai, another proof of our rigorous academic and research foundations: Elizabeth Reuter (2017), Ashley Lincoln (2018), and Aaron McEuen (2019). Concluding my tenure in 2021, I transitioned to the School of Industrial Design at Georgia Institute

of Technology, confident in the bright and sustainable future of the Hines College’s ID program. Over 18 years at UH, we grew hand in hand, sharing in the joy of each new recruitment and all and every graduation. Our shared triumphs and challenges etched an indelible mark on my heart. The moniker “MAMA Kwon” is a testament to the close-knit boards we fostered.

The Road Ahead (2023-) This retrospective not only highlights the milestones and achievements but also reflects on the dynamic changes and adaptability integral to the program’s success.

Two decades might seem like a significant milestone, and it indeed is. But for the ID program, this is just the beginning. It is a tapestry woven from collaboration, dedication, and sheer creativity, threads that will continue shaping the program’s legacy. I believe it becomes a testament to the dreams, challenges, achievements, and undying spirit of a community that we believe in shaping the future of design education at UH. My deepest gratitude is to each one of you!

Over the years, the ID program has been repeatedly recognized as one of the premium ID programs for outstanding professional design education. The Industrial Design Society of America (IDSA) recognized the program as the top 10 ID programs in the United States in 2022 and 2023. Red Dot ranked the program as #14 program in the world (2015). The program was ranked as #4 among ID programs in the US in 2023 by The College Values Online System.

The ID faculty team is formed by a group of highly experienced and accomplished professionals in their respective fields. Their outstanding works have been recognized by numerous awards nationally and internationally. Their developed expertise in specific fields and real-world practice wisdom form the foundation of the program’s teaching and training. A low student-to-faculty ratio allows our students to work closely with their instructors to be fully supported in every step of training and form long-term friendships as a preparation for their professional advancement.

Our Students Initially, the program’s primary enrollment came from the state of Texas; however, now our students come from across the US and other counties around the world. Regardless of their origins and backgrounds, our students share the same passion and beliefs in Design.

They love drawing with different mediums and making things by hand. They like figuring things out to face challenges in their daily lives. They believe design plays a significant role in impacting on people, economy, and the society. They believe design has exponential potential and value in shaping a better world.

Lunet Designer: David Edquilang, Class of 2022 Lunet is a mechanical finger prosthesis designed to provide an accessible solution for restoring finger functionality. Produced entirely through 3D printing, Lunet can be manufactured quickly at a low cost and personalized in CMF to the user’s stylistic preferences.

Through parametric modeling and a modular design, Lunet can be configured to perfectly fit any amputee’s anatomical dimensions.

Lunet features a modular snap-together design requiring zero metal fasteners, no adhesives, nor any special tools to assemble. The fingers work by using a novel, robust linkage mechanism mimicing the motion and flexibility of real fingers. By leveraging a unique mechanism, an easy-to-assemble and configurable modular design, and the ever-growing accessibility of 3D printing, Lunet allows finger amputees to regain the functionality of their amputated fingers at less than 1% of the cost of commercially available finger prostheses currently on the market.

The Red Dot Luminary Award 2023 The Red Dot Luminary Award is the highest level of recognition presented at the Red Dot Awards: Design Concept. It is selected among the Red Dot Best of the Best winners. The Luminary Award serves as an inspiration to aspire towards. Similar to obtaining a quality seal for the design that sets it apart from the rest in the field, being awarded a Red Dot Award means the work had excelled against a very high benchmark of design excellence. A leading light to follow, this groundbreaking concept was selected among the Red Dot Best of the Best winners.

UHID TODAY For over 20 years, the Hines College’s ID program has grown into a robust degree program with close to 100 undergraduate and graduate students. The growing faculty team supports a low faculty-to-student ratio of less than 1 to 15 students per faculty member. The program’s exceptional high caliber and rigor in education has resulted in students’ continuous and vigorous successes manifested in a large collection of awards and recognitions from the most competitive competitions across the world, including IDEA, iF, Red Dot, and more.

Burdette Keeland, Jr. Design Exploration Laboratory The Burdette Keeland, Jr. Design Exploration Laboratory is a fabrication space for Hines College students.

With over 50 total machines, the Lab spaces are well equipped with the latest in woodworking, metalworking, and digital fabrication tools. Students who have attended safety orientations and instructional demonstrations have convenient access to important tools of their professions, providing them valuable experience in prototyping, fabrication, and model building as they compete in their discipline.

In the ID program today, a project-based learning environment is facilitated by a studio-centered curriculum and supported by this premier fabrication facility where faculty and students work collaboratively to explore creative solutions. The Keeland Lab is one of the largest university-based digital fabrication labs in the United States. The 8,500 square-foot building houses state-of-the-art equipment enabling students to design and generate prototypes using 3D software and specialized machinery.

Construction Robotics and Fabrication Technology (CRAFT) Laboratory The Hines College continues to be a haven for knowledge, innovation, and discovery. With the construction of the College’s new CRAFT Lab currently underway, the CRAFT Lab will serve as a world-class research facility, drawing talented students and faculty to the University of Houston in pursuit of more sustainable and innovative architecture and design. As a home for cutting-edge advanced digital technologies, including construction robotics, full-scale 3D printing, and augmented/virtual realities, among many others, the lab will be a leading center for emerging technologies in Texas, and one of the top facilities in the world.

William R. Jenkins Architecture, Design, and Art Library The William R. Jenkins Architecture, Design, and Art Library, located on the first floor of the College’s architecture building, houses a collection of approximately 125,000 books, journals, DVDs, and other research material. The library collection also includes the Kenneth Franzheim II Rare Books Room, which contains treasures published in the 17th through 21st centuries. Computing, scanning, copying, and printing services are also available. The library staff are experts in architectural and design research and enjoy assisting students in discovering materials, providing consultation, and facilitating a great study space.

Mark Kimborough Associate Instructional Professor Program Co-Director Teaching: Visual Thinking, Design Communication, Senior Studio Research Areas: Design Branding and Practice, Design Management Awards: IDEA, Founder of Design EDGE Associate Professor and Co-Director Mark S. Kimbrough brings extensive experience in brand development, design business and practices, international manufacturing, and entrepreneurship to the Hines College’s ID program. Prior to venturing into academia, Mark was Principal of Design Edge, Inc., an internationally renowned product development firm in Austin, Texas. Throughout his tenure as the owner and the Creative Director at Design Edge, it consistently ranked in the top 10 design consultancies in America

by BusinessWeek magazine. Mark has received over 35 international design awards and has been granted 25 design and utility patents over the past three decades.

Mark is the author of Implied Realism: A Beginner’s Guide to Ideation and Visual Thinking and his fine art photography has been exhibited in several distinguished galleries throughout the state.

Jeff Feng Associate Professor Program Co-Director Teaching: Junior Studio, Senior Thesis, Graduate Studio Research Areas: Healthcare and Medical Design, Innovation Process Education Awards: IDEA, Medical Design Excellence, National Academy of Inventors As a designer with over 30 years of practice in industries, Feng tends to blend his real-world practice expertise and experience in his teaching. His research interests center on innovation process in design education, advancing the quality of healthcare practice and services through research and design. His research has resulted in numerous publications, NSF grants, and over 50 utility and design patents. Feng was inducted as a senior member of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) in 2022. Over the years in design practice, his works have been published in ID magazine, Metropolis magazine, Medical Design, Appliance Design magazine, and more.

Adam Wells Associate Instructional Professor Teaching: Freshman Foundation, Material and Fabrication, Material and Manufacturing, and Design Research Research Areas: Material, Modeling, Fabrication, and Manufacturing Awards: ID Magazine and IDEA Adam Wells is an instructional associate professor in the Hines College’s industrial design program, where he assisted inaugural director EunSook Kwon in creating and developing the first industrial design program in Texas. He was selected as one of the 25 Most Admired Educators by DesignIntelligence in 2016. Previously, he taught at the College for Creative Studies and the University of Wisconsin-Stout.

He earned his master’s from Domus Academy, Italy, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the Kansas City Art Institute. He had a short and brilliant career loading cheese before joining design consultancies, where he has worked on various projects ranging from graphic design to consumer electronics, furniture, and sculptures. His teaching focus areas are model making, fabrication, materials, manufacturing, design research, and design fundamentals.

George Chow Associate Professor Teaching: CAID, Sophomore Studio, Graduate Studio Research Areas: Design for Sustainability Awards: IDEA, Red Dot, iF George Chow is an associate professor for the Hines College’s industrial design program. Prior to joining UH, Chow was an industrial design lecturer at Ohio State University. George has worked professionally as an industrial designer since 1999 developing products for companies such as KitchenAid, Whirlpool, Hoover, SmartDisk, LG Electronics, Samsung, Midmark, Charbroil, Crown Equipment, Delta Faucet, and Evenflo. Chow currently holds 12 design patents for products including a fork-lift truck, vacuum cleaner, and various medical products.

Chow received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Industrial Design from Carnegie Mellon University and Master of Fine Arts in Design Research and Development from Ohio State University. Chow has won several teaching awards including an Adjunct Faculty Teaching Excellence Award (Columbus College of Art and Design), Outstanding Graduate Associate Teaching Award (Ohio State University), Excellence in Teaching (University of Houston) and the national 2021 IDSA Young Educator Award. When not teaching or designing, Chow enjoys traveling, learning about different cultures, photography, playing board games, drumming, cooking, gardening, fishing, and most of all, spending quality time with his family and friends.

Before joining UH, Kang had 20+ years of professional experience in systems design, product design, and UX design at global technology corporations and design strategy consultancies, including SAMSUNG, Motorola, Hyundai, and Design Continuum.

Kang has taught industrial design studios and UX design courses since he joined the Hines College in 2021. He strives for UX-driven sustainable products, systems, and service design. Kang’s current research focus is systems design and UX design for systems with advanced technology.

Elham Morshezadeh, Ph.D. Assistant Professor Teaching: Junior Studio, Senior Studio, Graduate Studio Research Areas: Healthcare Design, Telehealth, User Research Awards: IDEA Elham Morshedzadeh, Ph.D., is an industrial designer, usability researcher, and educator whose research focuses on healthcare, community-centered design, and usability. She was recently honored with the 2021 Young Educator Award from the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA). Since 2017, she has collaborated with clinicians, engineers, and faculty to create unique research and design initiatives in telehealth, healthcare, and public health, many of which have been funded by various organizations such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP).

Before entering academia, Morshezadeh spent a decade as a professional industrial designer in Iran, where she served as the lead designer on a range of high-profile design projects. Morshezadeh serves as the South District representative for the Women in Design Committee within the IDSA, collaborating with fellow committee members to enhance opportunities for female and non-binary designers.

Gordon Vos, Ph.D. Adjunct Faculty Teaching: Human Factors, Advanced Human Factors, Integrated Design Research Research Areas: Human Factors, Aerospace Ergonomics, Automation and AI Awards: NASA Innovative Research Award, NASA Human Research Program Gordon Vos has a Ph.D. in Engineering with a focus on Human Factors. He is the Human Factors Technical Discipline Lead at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, as well as a member of the faculty at the Hines College, with 23 years of academic teaching experience. His work focuses on applying the theories, principles, practices, and techniques of the human factors engineering discipline in the design of vehicles, habitats, and systems for human spaceflight.

His work has supported NASA’s Orion project, the Commercial Crew Program, the Human Landing System, Gateway, Lunar Terrain Rover, and the Pressurized Rover projects, under the Artemis Program. His work has included design, development, testing and evaluation activities in multiple scientific fields including human factors, human performance, industrial engineering, usability, statistics, industrial hygiene, and environmental health.

Meg Jackson Associate Instructional Professor Teaching: Freshman Studio, Design Vocabularies Research Areas: Beginning Design, Interdisciplinary Design, Biomaterials Meg Jackson is an associate instructional professor at Hines College. She currently teaches in the College’s design studio sequence, most recently teaching first-year industrial design studio. She also teaches interdisciplinary design media seminars. Jackson’s research is on beginning design pedagogy. Her work focuses on an interdisciplinary engagement with materials and media.

Jackson holds a Master of Architecture from Columbia University GSAPP. She received her Bachelor of Arts in the History of Art and Architecture from Middlebury College, where she was awarded a Thomas J Watson Fellowship. Her multimedia design portfolio includes work at Atopia in New York City, Ziger | Snead Architects, megapixel studios, and Context3. Prior to teaching at the Hines College, Meg taught at Maryland College of Art and at Texas A&M University. She was the co-editor of the International Journal of Interior Architecture and Spatial Design, as well as an editor for the AIA Forward Journal. She currently serves on the University’s CITE Advisory Committee and is an active member on the Advisory Board for the National Conference on the Beginning Design Student.

Zain Jamjoom Adjunct Faculty Teaching: Visual Communication, Foundation Studios Research Areas: Healthcare Awards: IDSA Finalist Zain Jamjoom is a multidisciplinary designer with 10 years of experience in visual communication. In 2011, she established Z/J Design Solutions, where she has since collaborated with a diverse range of clients, ranging from large corporations to emerging startups.

Alongside, she persued a Master of Fine Arts in New Media Design from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Her exposure to various digital projects during this period kindled a deep interest in physical product design, which led her to ID. In 2022, Zain successfully completed a Master of Science in industrial design from the University of Houston.

Throughout her graduate studies, she dedicated her efforts to several healthcare-related projects.

This experience allowed her to cultivate a profound understanding of the intersection between design and healthcare. Currently, Zain is actively engaged in research focused on the development of an accessible and cost-effective surgical training tool.

INTRODUCTION Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design

In the industrial design program, we teach with the idea that Houston is our laboratory, challenging students to push the boundaries of architecture and design in this complex and diverse metropolis, and therefore, make a difference in the world.

The Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design degree is a four-year curriculum with a minimum 132 semester hours. The degree includes the university’s required core curriculum and 19 hours of elective courses. Because of the mutual and overlapping bonds of architecture, interior architecture, and industrial design, the programs share a common first-semester curriculum.

The emerging context of education in the development of digital information technology can be summarized and characterized by the keywords accessible, flexible, virtual, ubiquitous, connected, collaborative, authentic, and learner-centered. This conceptual frame for understanding the world can further be linked to design education and practice. The education model for the ID program at the Hines College focuses on addressing a new structure of learning by connecting and integrating design knowledge in new, useful, and meaningful ways for the student.

The ID program emphasizes the learner’s generative and discovery-oriented learning, explained in the following design pedagogy: Today’s rapidly changing world demands that ID students possess a broad base of crossboundary knowledge and skills enabling them to

deal with complex problems more effectively. Integrated learning is necessitated by the blurred boundaries between design studies and design activities, which include a wide spectrum of social acts and processes.

Collaborative learning is defined as a learning process emphasizing cooperative efforts between instructors and students. Collaborative learning is an important cognitive strategy based on the social construction of knowledge, which leads to deeper processing and understanding than learning without collaboration.

Design learning emphasizes process-oriented problem solving as a reflective practice. The practical aspects of design knowledge can be enhanced by a series of workshops and industry-sponsored projects. Implementing design knowledge comes from “learning by doing.”

Students interested in the Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design should follow the procedure for application to the Hines College. Degree plans are not official until students meet with their academic advisors.

The program’s enrollment is well-balanced. We see potential enrollment growth in the future in UI/UX and we are strategically hiring faculty who can bring expertise in this area.

The ID program has a growing faculty body composed by full-time faculty members, faculty (who have dual appointments in other programs/colleges), and professional supporting adjunct faculty, in addition to teaching assistants.

The ID program provides more advanced courses beyond the required degree plan. ID students, additionally, may take classes that are open to them from architecture, especially in areas of digital technology. These courses further student’s knowledge and gain more expertise in specific subjects of students’ interest. This enables students to have greater depth in a particular area or broader skill set and differentiate themselves.

We provide advanced courses in digital sketching, advanced materials, portfolio, design business and practice, technology (Arduino, Rhino, 3D Studio Max, and Grasshopper), interface and interaction, and UI/UX.

Undergraduate Curiculum The ID program is dedicated to developing adaptable, diverse, and pedagogically driven curricula giving students an open and free landscape for planning their study. The program values and motivates faculty with compelling teaching opportunities, and systemically updates and advances design media and technology competencies.

We value a student centric pedagogical approach celebrating critical thinking and making, while emphasizing collaboration and innovation.

The ID curriculum is updated with increased curricular flexibility and diversity to promote flexibility for students, customization for a desired career or professional path, and a less rigid linear progression of courses.

The program is open to identify opportunities at the College and University levels for interdisciplinary work within the curriculum, including offering interdisciplinary studios and/or courses and strengthening shared degree collaborations.

We emphasize ecological consciousness and sustainability by embedding the fundamental principles of sustainable design into most, if not all, design and creation related courses.

INTRODUCTION The Master of Science in Industrial Design degree was established in 2013 to be committed to design innovation, research, and commercialization, as the first and the only graduate MS program in industrial design in the state of Texas. The program offers a special learning and training space for individuals who share a passion for human-centered design and innovation, advanced professional training, and design-led entrepreneurship.

Making is not simply an action or a craft, but a form of critical thinking, calling forth innovative solutions for contemporary conditions. The MS ID degree provides an opportunity for our faculty

expertise and program prowess to articulate a deepened concentration in a specific area of advanced inquiry while providing our students with a solid foundation for multiple forward paths including further pursuits of applied research associated with industrial design and excellent opportunities for employment in careers related to industrial design practice.

Collaboration through Industrial Sponsorships

ID+

The graduate program is designed to be open to candidates with or without an ID undergraduate background. Candidates with a science, engineering, business, and fine arts background are encouraged to apply. The program values the interdisciplinary culture in the graduate studio which forms a fertile basis for creative problem-solving and experimentation infused by a wide range of expertise.

The graduate program faculty includes a group of practicing design and research professionals with a wide spectrum of expertise covering furniture, healthcare, system thinking-driven UXUI, design sustainability, smart products, aerospace, material science, packaging, and innovation entrepreneurship.

Graduate research and teaching assistantship With a fast-growing landscape and capacity in research and design in the areas of healthcare, system design application, aerospace, and design education, the graduate program offers more opportunities to our students with financial support through research assistantships and teaching assistantships. To all out-ofstate and international students, once a scholarship is granted, students will enjoy an in-state tuition for their studies. Merit scholarships will possibly be offered to outstanding new applicants. Scholarships are offered regularly every year.

The program pursues success as measured by our institutional goals which include national competitiveness, student success, community advancement, local and national recognition, and competitive resources. Faculty and students work together in a studio-centric curriculum, supported by

a premier fabrication facility. Open studios seamlessly incorporate coursework into project-based learning through material investigations and applied research.

In a short period, the program has been successful in making a significant impact as the first ID graduate program in the state of Texas. Our faculty utilizes innovative teaching practices through integrated studio education combined with industry-based collaborations, gaining our students real-world experience in solving critical problems. Our success in this regard is demonstrated by the success of our students in not only securing jobs, but the invitation to present in both national and international forums, and in winning industry-recognized awards.

One significant achievement is being recognized by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), the sole professional organization in the educational and professional community. Kristi Bartlett was selected as one of the top 4 graduates in the country to receive the Graduate Student Merit Awards (SMA) in 2019. Suochun Fang won Merit Award in 2023. This recognition signifies the program’s rank in the country.

Three years in a row, our students have been selected by the International Forum and Exhibitions, Global Grads Show, and invited to Dubai.

Mason Lucich, class of 2019, developed his patented technology and founded his company Insuhealth Design Ltd. Since then, he led his company to win numerous awards. Most recently, Insuhealth was awarded an SBIR grant by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to commercialize its patented device for healthcare.

Graduate Program Curriculum Degree Plan: Customizable Program of Study Each graduate student develops their personalized curriculum in consultation with the co-directors of the ID program based on their needs, interests, background, and specific area of study. An interdisciplinary study plan of 36 credit hours (15 required, 9 ID electives, and 12 general electives) needs to be completed for graduation.

Elective courses may be taken in other departments and colleges at the University of Houston, as needed.

Candidates without an undergraduate degree in industrial design are advised to complete an additional 17 credits to develop fundamental design thinking and visualization skills. The co-directors and faculty of the ID program will advise and approve appropriate courses, including undergraduate ID studios.

Currently, the MS degree offers two certificate options with internationally recognized programs at the UH:

Entrepreneurship Certificate Through a partnership with the UH Wolff Center for Entrepreneurship (ranked #1 undergraduate entrepreneurship program in the US by the Princeton Review and Entrepreneur’s list of Top 50 Best Programs), ID graduate students are allowed to take a set of required elective courses to earn an Entrepreneurship Certificate to fuel their career development.

RESEARCH DRIVEN INNOVATION The ID program cultivates an energetic environment developing and supporting research initiatives brought forward by our faculty and students. The research programs have been awarded grants from NSF, NIH, Venturewell, and other agencies.

To innovate in advancing the quality of treatment and care through research and design is one of the primary focuses of our research groups. While strategically leveraging partnerships with established research centers within the UH system and external industry and community stakeholders to drive research that serves society, we are making sure to include the communities for and with whom we are designing.

Collaboration with the BRAIN Center The BRAIN Center is a national research center funded by the NSF housed at UH. With multiple affiliated members on board, the ID program has worked with the Center’s research teams on many projects over the years. Led by Professor Jeff Feng, one project developed a brain-controlled upper-limb robot-assisted rehabilitation device for stroke survivors. In collaboration with the MD Anderson, the device was taken into a clinical trial with patients, and utility IPs resulted from the project.

Collaboration with the Harris Health System Harris Health System (HHS) is one of the largest systems in the country to achieve the quality standard. It includes community health centers, same-day clinics, three multispecialty clinic locations, a dental center, mobile health units, and two full-service hospitals.

With the support of HHS, a project was initiated to study the daily living challenges of people with arthritis. Out of this study, Enpour, a simple assistive device, was developed to help people with arthritis pour heavy containers at home kitchens. Through validation testing, the innovative device was patented and awarded an NSF I-Corps grant for commercialization.

Collaborating for years with the occupational therapist team at HHS, the ID program started a communityfocused initiative to develop low-cost prostheses for amputee patients in underserved communities. Many patients have benefited from the free prostheses developed by students.

Hines College Health Design Lab The Hines College’s Health Design Lab (HDL) is newly formed in the ID program to develop innovative initiatives in health care and public health. It fosters a collaborative space for faculty and students at UH to enable envisioning novel solutions for equitable health. The design process in this Lab is focused on community participatory research and design, co-design methodologies, and interdisciplinary excellence.

Community engagement and professional collaboration form the cornerstone of the co-design process employed by the HDL. This approach guarantees that designs are not merely functional but also deeply intertwined with the unique requirements and cultural context of the end-users. Design is inherently transdisciplinary, and HDL’s projects are in collaboration with faculty from a diverse array of disciplines, including healthcare professionals, public health experts, and both internal and external engineers at UH.

The research of the Lab’s director Elham Morshedzadeh, Ph.D., focuses on healthcare and telehealth design, community-centered design, and usability research.

The HDL aims at providing an experiential learning opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to conduct thorough user-centered research on healthrelated subjects. Another objective of the Lab is to provide an interdisciplinary platform encompassing user research, healthcare needs assessment, and health-focused design, coupled with access to clinical immersion experiences. This channel provides a realworld experience to students and encourages them to explore initiatives related to healthcare concerns.

Systems Thinking for Sustainable Design

Systems Design and UX Design Integration

Venturewell Grant: Design for Sustainable Consumption in People’s Daily Living Assistant professor for UX/UI advanced design technology Min Kang and associate professor and co-director of industrial design Jeff Feng received the VentureWell Course and Program grant, part of the spring 2022 sustainable design grant cycle. Their proposal Design for Sustainable Consumption in People’s Daily Living was awarded $26,500.

The proposal allows students to investigate critical unsustainable consumption issues in waste-producing industries and provides students with system-level sustainable design knowledge. Students have the opportunity to introduce solutions and inventions promoting zero-waste products and services with advanced technology.

“Most of today’s problems came from yesterday’s solutions. The impactful ‘sustainable design’ comes from discovering and solving the problems within the context of the systems, not merely applying green materials to the products,” said Kang. “We are building this course for students to study system-level solution design that can create sustainable problem-solving systems.”

In the context of ID education, systems design is an approach extending beyond designing individual products to focus on the interconnectedness of products within larger systems.

It integrates principles of systems theory into the traditional ID curriculum to help students think about design more holistically and interconnectedly. The aim is to equip students with the ability to design innovative, user-friendly, scalable, sustainable, and integrated solutions within larger ecosystems. If a student is tasked with designing an EV charger, a systems design approach would encourage them to think about how the charger interacts with EVs, how it is controlled, how it can adapt to user behaviors, and how it fits into the broader context of smart vehicle ecosystems or even city-wide energy grids.

This might involve understanding user interfaces, data exchange, and energy consumption patterns.

By incorporating systems design into ID education, institutions aim to prepare the next generation of designers to better meet the increasingly complex and interdisciplinary challenges of the modern world.

This holistic approach is designed to produce skilled designers and versatile problem solvers.

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH DAY The UH Undergraduate Research Day (URD) is hosted each spring by the Office of Undergraduate Research and Major Awards in collaboration with the Honors College and the MD Anderson Library. This event brings together hundreds of visitors to celebrate the work of undergraduate researchers across all disciplines who showcase their work in poster presentations.

As a program with a small number of students, the ID program has been active and prolific in cultivating the undergraduate researchers on a range of subjects from healthcare to advanced technology. Every year, there are a number of ID students’ projects selected and invited to participate in the URD. Our participation record indicates that research enriched education casts a major impact on shaping our students’ growth and career path. Out of the research programs, students are inspired to pursue advanced degrees in ID and other research fields, take on research driven practice positions.

SIDSA

SIDSA was founded in the fall of 2005 as the first and only student branch of the national professional organization, IDSA, in Texas. Since its inception, SIDSA has brought value to the ID program through organizing conferences, exhibitions, workshops, mentorship programs, and portfolio reviews. In addition, SIDSA has represented UH and its Merit Award winners at IDSA regional district conferences. Now in our 14th year at the University of Houston, SIDSA continues to expand its membership and activities.

SIDSA organized student-centric events annually in the fall with a unique theme. DESIGN ODYSSEY has been the title for years. The event transformed into IDESIGN in 2022 with more extensive programs running over a few days.

ID Annual Exhibition Every May, the ID program holds its annual exhibition of best students’ projects from first year to the graduate students. SIDSA leads the effort working with the senior class to develop the unique theme, branding, and install the show.

The theme of the year 2022 was “Back to the Future” after the pandemic. The theme in 2023 was “Next Stop.”

STUDY ABROAD The ID program faculty-led international summer programs and exchange programs offer students a great opportunity to be exposed to and learn from different cultures, traditions, arts, and designs.

Northeast Asia Study This program was designed for ID students to learn and explore the rich northeast Asian culture, traditional architecture, arts and crafts, and to make a valid connection between the learning and design problem solving through a systematic research and design process. The purpose of this course is not to overwhelm but to stimulate and inspire students through an exposure of series of activities to a different culture and tradition. Students applied research of traditional materials, techniques. and philosophies in a contemporary language, and realized their designs recognizing the understanding of culture as an important element.

The NE Aisa Study 2.0 program is about understanding design innovation and activities in the context of emerging cities in northeast Asia, where western design movements and digital technology have transformed the cities dramatically. Due to the rapid technological advancement and city development, designers and design students need to learn and experience NE Asian design movement: rapid, concurrent, and collaborative design development. Four cities (Tokyo, Seoul, Beijing, and Shanghai) are selected to provide immersive learning experience from their design-led business models and infrastructure development. The program allows students to visit global design organizations (Samsung, LG, GK design group, Xiaomi), cultural organizations (Dongdaemoon Design Plaza, Tokyo Design Center, 21_21 Design Sight), and world heritages (Great Wall, Forbidden City), and design universities (Beijing Institute of Technology, Tsinghua University, Ewha Womens University, Kookmin University) for student exchanging projects and activities.

Ireland 2023 The discipline of industrial design originated in Europe more than a century ago during the Industrial Revolution. Understanding the history, revolutions, and modern practice of design in the context of Ireland is an invaluable and novel opportunity for experiential learning and training. The program courses are designed with a focus on the rich design tradition, history, and experience design in Ireland. Primary interactive activities include learning and working in three local design colleges, visiting and learning in three design firms, and visiting multiple museums and sites. Primary learning outcomes included a themed design project, the design study report about Irish design and culture, multiple short-term design practices with local professionals.

Dublin is the capital and largest city of Ireland with a population of 1,547,359. On a bay at the mouth of the River Liffey, Dublin is a center of Ireland for education, arts and culture, administration, and industry. Belfast is the capital and largest city of northern Ireland, standing on the banks of the River Lagan on the east coast, the second-largest in Ireland with a population of 345,418 in 2021. By the early 19th century, Belfast was a major port, playing an important role in the Industrial Revolution in Ireland and briefly becoming the largest linen-producer in the world. Students were led to visit the historical designcentric sites, modern design practices, and design institutions to sense the pulse of the industrial design evolution in Ireland over years.

Blaffer Art and Design (BAD) Program Collaborating with the Uh Blaffer Art Museum, ID professor Adam Wells led the effort to initiate and forge a meaningful program. The project allowed students in the ID sophomore studio to design simple products that can be made by themselves with limited financial support. A panel of professional jurors selected the top designs to award them with sufficient funding to produce a small batch of products to sell in the Balffer Art Museum store.

This program provided a rare opportunity for our students to experience and understand designing and making a product to sell for a profit at such an early stage of their academic careers. They were required to estimate the material and labor costs to make a profit.

The program has been running for many years with substantial success. Many students have produced their designs and sold them at this venue. Shown here is a collection of winning designs over the years.

This industrial and rustic incense holder is made out of cement part held by a singular piece of acrylic.

This design relates to the angular structure seen at the entrence of the Blaffer Museum.

As the cement represents the architectural aspect of the museum, the acrylic piece is used to make the cement part seem like it’s floating.

A Collaborative Platform with Industry Collings Guitar Project In 2013, a class of industrial design students in were been hard at work creating electric guitars for rock, blues, and jazz players. Led by the industrial design professor Mark Kimbrough, these students partnered with Collings Guitars in Austin, Texas. In doing so, they researched these musical styles, as well as pioneering artists from several genres – Clapton, Page, King, Beck, Stanley Jordan, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Wes Montgomery and others.

The students’ final designed products were put to the test during a performance in the Hines College’s atrium. Veteran virtuosos Van Wilks and Michael Wheeler (who taught jazz guitar at UH’s Moores School of Music) delivered a wonderful performance with the students’ guitars.

Students designed the instruments at UH and received hands-on experience building them at the Collings factory. The construction process was quite extensive and required meticulous craftsmanship, Kimbrough said. “One student spent several days just sanding her guitar,” he said. “There is innovation that won’t be noticeable on the surface. Students learned lamination techniques and chambering within solid body models to replicate certain sounds.”

“Collings’ factory offered the students the best of the best tools,” Kimbrough said. “They also had Collings and his craftsmen guiding them, but their work was being held to the factory’s high standards. It’s as quite a spectacular experience for everyone involved.”

Students learned more about guitars and what artists look for in these instruments through extensive research. Several of the UH designers consulted with local musicians to find out how design is integral to a guitar’s functionality. They also learned more about artists with whom they were not previously familiar.

The ID program grooms aspiring designers through a calculated curriculum program. First-year students learn design fundamentals in the classroom and the studio. During their second year, students familiarize themselves with industrial design history, materials, manufacturing methods and visual communications skills. Third-year students conduct research and apply their findings to design projects. By their fourth year in the program, students are prepared for careers through curriculum addressing diverse design issues, design ethics, business practices and strategies.

In addition to its curriculum, the program connects students with world-renowned designers through extensive workshops and special lectures. It also hosts an annual exhibition to showcase students’ projects.

A Collaborative Platform with Industry TAU Bike The TAU bike series was developed with a special attention to the city of Houston. The downtown infrastructures were rebuilt with bike paths and lanes which promote the urban living with bikes. Students developed a road bike, hybrid and cruiser. In developing these bicycles, they took into consideration factors such as security, lighting, and cargo accessories.

Students took inspiration from both classic and modern styles from around the city to create a bike brand that was distinctly Houston. They also looked at the needs of bikers – how people locked their bikes, where they ride and how they store them. Their design strived to meet all needs in an elegant and streamlined way.

To craft these bikes, students literally pedaled around Houston to learn more about the challengers faces by city riders. They also interviewed several avid bikers and consulted with representatives from Houston’s Public Works department.

Three bikes were fully functional and people enjoyed riding them during the show at the Hines College.

Collaborative Initiative with Industry PIXL Interactive LED Panel Park spaces are critical to the developmental intentions for large cities. Smart urban growth, real estate values, and public health can be positively influenced by the acquisition and development of public park spaces.

Question: How can we increase the number of activities that people do in a park and enhance the ones they already enjoy?

PIXL is a smart interactive lighting tile system composed by square modular tiles in 12”X12”. Each tile has 8 motion sensors integrated under a casting concrete tile surface.

Sensors turn on the LED lights to light up the tiles when they sense the motion on top. The system is water-proof to sustain the outdoor environment. The built-in micro processor allows the tile to be programmed in ways to interact with human motions.

PIXL is designed to increase the value and augment the experience of activities that park goers already enjoy while introducing new and engaging activities.

The design incentivizes both pedestrian use and city planner’s involvement with public parks.

Collaborative Initiative with Industry Spur5 Bike The creation of the initial Spur 5 cycle was an initiative of ID+. The main objective was to leverage 3D printing technology and to design a bicycle for urban commuting. It incorporated enhanced functionality and features, total integration of systems and attachments, unique aesthetic, and streamlined assembly processes.

Benefits of this unique design are capability and convenience for the urban commuter, increased safety and visibility, detachable lighting units and battery, optimized cargo options, integrated frame-mounted lock and an overall reduction in manufacturing cost.

Collaborative Initiative with Industry XtraLight XtraLight Energy-Efficient Lighting Solution is a leading lighting manufacturing company in Houston, Texas.

XtraLight patented LEDLinX, state-of-the-art, modular technology has a huge potential in application in a wide range of indoor and outdoor environments. It is flexible and highly efficient in application. LEDLinX panel is extremely compact and flexible which offers a true freedom in accustomed shapes and forms in lighting design.

The ID program is grateful to work with the XtraLight team over years on many projects. The featured project explored and developed an innovative outdoor lighting design for the company. In this project, students had an opportunity to pay attention to and study varied outdoor lighting environments, all aspects of constraints in production, designing and building outdoor lighting products.

With a study of outdoor lighting product history, students were required to think about the lifespan of an outdoor light and how a design would fit in the environment for a longer period of time. In another words, the design should last for next 15 to 20 years, but not dated quickly. The final design must be well crafted and function as a real product.

Collaborative Initiative with Industry CIT Circadian Intervention Therapy Table CIT is a therapeutic table designed to provide light therapy treatment to Alzheimer patients. It is a design outcome of a collaboration between ID+ and Xtralight Engery-Efficient Lighting Solution. Designed lighting can be used to reduce symptoms associated with conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, insomnia, and depression.

This table delivers specified uniformed lighting to an Alzheimer patient’s living environment. The table’s smart control module keeps the light in sync with the local circadian system.

The easy to move light structure design makes the table engaging and friendly. The table is designed in a neutral style to fit in a variety of different senior living facilities. The easy flip design makes it easy to form a vertical lighting surface which is another primary way for light delivery.

With an intention to deliver light to the patients in multiple environment and engaging in more activities, the CIT table was designed to be in two primary

positions: a normal table and a vertical light panel delivering even ambient lights. Three main appilcations in senior living facilities are visualized below.

ICFF Show Wilson Art Design Competition Wilsonart LLC is a leading manufacturer of decorative surfaces for more than 50 years. The Wilsonart Challenge is a student design competition the company sponsors annually at selected design schools. In fall 2013, the ID program was selected to host the competition. The competition was to create innovative chairs celebrating the richness of Wilsonart International’s laminate surfacing materials. The ultimate purpose of this chair was to look striking.

The theme of the 2013 year competition was ‘SPACE’. The seed idea of student’s design should was to be inspired by a space in the Wilson House museum.

The Ralph Sr. and Sunny Wilson House is in a classic mid-century modern home style. The interiors of the Wilson house feature extensive use of decorative plastic laminates in innovative applications, most of which had not been seen before. It is truly incredible.

Mid-century modernism was another source of inspiration to students.

Infinite was the winner of the Wilson Art Chair Design Competition. Infinite is the definition of limitless in space. The name fits perfectly with the chair as well as the theme of the chair competition. The structure is made out of plywood with a rib cage and layered with veneer, then with the Wilson Art laminates. The continuous flow of the chair is an infinite symbol capturing the space within it. The chair reflects midcentury modernism by mixing a wood grain material with a solid red color. The front view of the chair is continuous and flows right through the hole.

Grand-Time BREDA BRAND Watch Project BREDA launched in 2009 as a private label brand, and has since evolved into a watch design studio in Dallas, Texas. BREDA is a Dallas (deep ellum)-based watch company. The brand is known by designing unique, fresh and accessible products catered to a community of creatives. All of BREDA watches are under $100.

In fall 2017, the ID program was very excited to host a design competition sponsored by Grand-Time. The competition explored and developed an analog watch (leather) for BREDA. In this project, students had an opportunity to learn about watch mechanisms, watch design process, and watch aesthetic value.

BREDA is an independent brand run by a small team of creatives, and they have also built a collaborative platform called #the unbound to expand on their mission of inspiring creators. They are not just a company but rather a collaborator within the community we have built.

fact that the seat is made up of three identical parts which can easily be packed and shipped.”

Alexa Baeza admitted the process was stressful at times, but the lessons were invaluable. For example, she figured out a way to save on costs by laser cutting and bending her design “Flight”, a wall hanger made out of stainless steel that can hold variable items. The product functions well and appears like a piece of art on the wall.

It sounds like a reality show competition. In 2019, the ID sophomore students competed and brought new homeware and decor products to the Dallas Total Home and Gift Market. It is one of the largest wholesale markets in the country with more than 200,000 retail buyers from more than 85 countries in attendance. “We conceived a program where students could develop simple, functional products produced in Houston or the Texas area,” said Mark Kimbrough, associate instructional professor, who led the TXD initiative with George Chow, associate professor. “It’s the students’ first experience to what design really is as a commercial endeavor.”

The students’ projects involved identifying marketable trends, designing products and packaging, pricing out materials, sorting through the manufacturing processes and dealing with inevitable pitfalls that can arise from turning their concepts into finished goods.

Simplicity was the inspiration behind the two products Imhotep Blot designed. First is a two-piece incense holder called “two”, a brass weight that holds the incense stick and an aluminum tray that catches the ashes. The other product, “Three”, is a stool made out of steel and wood that can easily be assembled for use and disassembled for shipping. “The way I made this speaks to the whole language that you can disassemble,” said Blot, “The gaps between the seat panels emphasize the

Octa Octa is a space-saving tri-ply cad stainless steel frying pan. Bakelite is used for the handle, which makes it heat resistant and safer to grasp. This pan is ideal for people who enjoy cooking but don’t have enough space to store a lot of cookware. When not in use, the handles swivel around the sides of the pan to save space that a traditional frying handle would take up. This feature also improves the ability to stack the pans. When you’re ready to cook, remove the pan from the oven, spin the handles back to their original positions, and watch as the magnets embedded in the handles snap back into place for a firm hold.

NIMBL

Designer: Tim Joe, Class of 2019 NIMBL is an all-in-one skate tool specially designed for skateboarders to fully assemble and disassemble skateboards. NIMBL provides on-the-go maintenance in a highly compact but most effective package possible.

It is approximately 1/3 the size of the smallest skate tool available. Its’ minimal cylindrical form is effortless to carry. In function, NIMBL optimizes all four key operations, provides superior ergonomics and comfort to skateboarders through maximizing the leverage, a performance ratchet, and a full-size handle.

The hardest design challenge was creating the necessary amount of leverage for all four operations required to fully disassemble and maintain a skateboard while still maintaining a profile that could be comfortably pocketed.

Unlike most skateboard tools that house a tiny screwdriver in the body of the tool, NIMBL seamlessly integrates a full-size screwdriver head in the main body. By integrating the screwdriver into the ratchet head, both the screwdriver and the ½” socket are given the speed and ease of use of the ratcheting functionality. A large majority of skate tools use a ⅜” socket wrench to service the nut on each of the eight bolts; however, this means they cannot accommodate long bolts, and therefore, only work on specific skateboards. NIMBL utilizes a ⅜” crescent wrench, letting it accommodate any bolt length, provide extra leverage, and fit in tighter areas.

Designer: Juan Jimenez, Class of 2013 Food brings people together. Preparing a delicious meal for a large family can be fun and challenging.

How can the cooking experience be made simpler for the chef in the family?

Cooking can be tough. This student prepared a wide variety of meals and dishes as often as possible in order to find opportunities for design. There were many problems he faced, but measuring spoons presented a unique set of issues.

Objective: Design an organized measuring system that easily gives accurate measurements and prevents spills.

Smart Measure won the First Place Award in the IHA student design competition in 2013.

If a designer is truly attentive to the requirements of their context, the end product will have true and lasting meaning. It is only at this starting point that products with meaning can be born.

The legs of Ergo flip the traditional relationship of “wider at the front, skinnier at the back” in order to enable more chairs to fit around a table. Whether it’s in the common space of an office, around a table at your local Cafe, or around your own kitchen table, Ergo does more with the space it is given. When the chair has no seatback, it can disappear fully underneath a table, tucking away neatly and keeping routes of egress clear in tight commercial spaces. Returns around the rear of the chair to meet the seat back has been designed to embrace and cradle the user, no matter where they place their weight. The silicone connection gaskets underneath the seat pan allow the seating angle to adjust as a person shifts their weight, whether it’s over the course of a quick cup of coffee, or an entire day’s worth of work.

Manta

Designer: Anna Bibikova, Class of 2020 Stress and chronic fatigue are more a part of life than ever before, as the line between work and personal life gets blurred further. Manta allows people to sit back, close their eyes, and escape their busy lives, if only for a moment.

When creating Manta, Anna was inspired by comfort, relaxation, and the carefree feeling everyone seems to experience when near the ocean. This piece combines modern, sculptural form with traditional macrame weaving techniques to create a soft, form-hugging hammock-like lounge chair that could be used in home or public settings. The “shapeless” structure of the chair almost embraces the user, giving them no choice but to sink back and let the chair cradle them.

Manta’s unique shape and eye-catching texture make it a perfect statement piece for a stylish modern home setting, an office that could use some bohemian flair, or as lounge chairs for tourists at a resort.

The materials and the process of crafting this chair were carefully researched and deliberately selected to create a truly unique blend of tradition and modernity. The beauty of Manta is in the details and different facets of inspiration that come together to form a standout piece of furniture.

The most striking detail of the Manta chair is the elegant, hammock-like woven net flowing over the irregular structure. Many hours were spent researching the art of the 13th-century Arabic weaving technique of macrame to create the most comfortable combination of knots and achieve perfect tension in the seating area.

The frame, welded out of bent steel rods, made to look primarily like one flowing line, provides a rigid yet ergonomic structure for the woven cotton net to drape from. The color, a muted brown, was chosen to contrast with the polished steel of the gracefully arched legs.

Blüm

Designer: Pedro Sandoval, Class of 2022 Blüm started as any typical project, with the challenge of finding inspiration. While sitting outside his home pondering how to approach his design, a “vibrant, red hibiscus flower” caught Sandoval’s attention. It was then that he knew he had discovered his path forward.

Blüm received the inaugural 2022 John Conrad Student Pinnacle Award.

Essentially, it boiled down to a combination of complex geometry, as well as calculations, understanding the material, craftsmanship, a whole lot of quick design decision-making compromises, determination, and discipline.

Designer: Spence, Class of 2024 Inspired by dynamic and powerful forms, the Torsion chair unites two separate swooshing forms to one another, while having the rear form separating and uniting back together. Both forms have large chamfers to give a super slim and light weight appearance and to add more comfort. There are removable leather cushions that attach with neodymium magnets for ease of use.

With veneers on the outside layers of the laminated plywood, this structure fuses elegance and innovation to create a strong and dynamic structure with the utmost comfort and versatility.

Designer: Aiden Fincher, Class of 2023 Babegate is a smart gate unlike any other currently available on the market. Incorporating a modular frame, the gate can easily fit into doorways ranging from 28” to 48”. Using soft edges and mesh paneling, babegate can sit in any home without standing. One of the key features of the gate is the wireless locking technology which will allow the user to open and close the gate remotely.

Designer: Mariana Anzures, Class of 2024 Anzures named her project Siva Afi after a traditional fire dance from the Samoan Islands. Her chair design tells a story about the raw beauty of nature through its exploration of form and movement.

Recompute: Eco Friendly Computers Designer: Brenden Macaluso, Class of 2008

Recompute is a new way of thinking about computers that layers sustainable ideas throughout their lifecycle to make an overall sustainable product that can be easily replicated. The framework of Recompute addresses sustainability along three main points during the product’s life.

Manufacturing Rather than making a large tower constructed from numerous materials (ABS plastic, aluminum, steel, etc.) hundreds of manufacturing processes & dozens of individual components, the Recompute case is made of corrugated cardboard (recyclable and renewable).

There are four low-impact manufacturing processes to assemble Recompute: Die cutting, gluing (non-toxic glue), printing, and electronic assembly. Recompute only uses three major electronic components: A motherboard with processor & memory, a power supply, and a hard drive.

Use Recompute is designed for flexibility in external hardware usage via 8 USB ports. People use USB ports like electrical outlets in a room, whatever device is needed is simply plugged in. This allows the user to add or subtract hardware as it is needed as well as allowing the use of hardware on other machines. By separating hardware components every piece can be used to the maximum extent of its useful life.

Disposal Electronic components need to be properly recycled as they contain toxic heavy metals. However, this is often skipped because dismantling computers is difficult, time-consuming, and not cost-effective. When electronic components are not dismantled they are often thrown into landfills or shipped off to other countries to be burned where it becomes a pollution issue. Recompute can be quickly and easily disassembled without tools so both the electronics and case can be individually recycled with ease.

Recompute product launched in Italy.

GLIDESAFE: Infant Car Seat Designer: Arvin Abadilla, Class of 2010

GlideSafe - Infant Car Seat - GlideSafe is an infant car seat that combines the mid-rear seating position and side loading. Manual carrying has also been addressed with a new Flexi-Frame Handle design.

Slide and Swivel “The middle-rear passenger is 25 percent safer than other back-seat passengers.”

Parents load their children in the side-rear seat for convenience and speed. What they don’t know is that a child sitting in the side rear is 255 more likely to die in a serious accident. With a slide and swivel motion, GlideSafe brings the child outward from the safer center seat for easy loading and unloading.

Leave the Bulk Referencing cyclists who remove their helmets when dismounting their bikes, GlideSafe follows suit and keeps the impact foam in the car. This reduced bulk allows parents to take away an unobtrusive compact shell.

Designer: Mariel Pina, Class of 2012 “Industrial Design vs. Voluntary Simplicity: Can the mass production of goods coexist with the less-is-more philosophy?” This research and design project yielded the combination of two kitchen products into one, and more importantly the development of a relevant design philosophy. AMBOS - Spanish for “both” - is three principles, two functions, and one footprint.

UPLiFT

Designer: Yen Lee, Class of 2013 Maintaining independence is paramount for aging adults. “I fight old age tooth-and-nail because I don’t want to give up my independence.”

Grocery shopping is a task that is essential to maintaining that independence. “It is very important that I am able to provide food for myself because I don’t ever want to be a burden on my family or friends.”

Essential tasks become more difficult due to decreases in mobility and strength. “I’ve fallen from [carrying] stuff before.”

Uplift is a foldable shopping cart design concept for the senior individuals to support their independent living.

The elevated cart is easier to use with no body-bend.

The smaller cart size is customized based on the users’ shopping habits. Most important feature is that the cart can be easily folded and push into most car trunks by a hand switch.

Manta

Designer: Andrea Nova, Class of 2013 One of the main problems in learning to swim is incorrect body position. The wrong position causes inefficiency, fatigue, and even sinking. The swimmer saves energy and reduces resistance by forming a streamlined shape. Manta is an adult swimming aid that supports achieving correct form and horizontal floatation when learning to swim. The contoured Manta surfaces hold the swimmer’s center of mass and thighs to ensure the swimmer stays in a horizontal position while still relatively maintaining free range of motion.

MAYA

Designer: Josh Probst, Class of 2020 MAYA is a motorcycle designed to defy product obsolescence. Rather than creating another vehicle that will quickly be outdated, MAYA can reuse the same platform to create a whole new vehicle. MAYA breaks into four major components that are quickly and easily disassembled and assembled making automotive upgrades easy and approachable.

The old design strategy designs a product’s technology first and designs the structure and aesthetics around the technology. This strategy makes the structures obsolete as soon as tech or aesthetics are obsolete. MAYA designs the structure first and designs the technology and aesthetics around the structure. This strategy allows the structure to be continually reused while the tech and aesthetics continuously update. This dramatically prolongs the life span of the product.

MAYA won PARIS Design Award Grand Prix in 2020. It also won CORE77 Design Notable Awards.

Parasports Wheelchair Designer: Class of 2016

Adaptive Athletics at the University of Houston strives to provide sport and recreational opportunities for people with disabilities. ID seniors were presented with a unique design challenge to eliminate the economic barriers that costly equipment has for parents of high school age students. Working alongside Houston Parks and Recreation, Texas Paralympics, and several school districts, our industrial design students leveraged new materials and manufacturing techniques to design a more affordable alternative to expensive custombuild racing wheelchairs. The objective was to make sports more accessible to any child who has a mobility impairment. This was achieved by designing a racing wheelchair which incorporated adjustability allowing for one base chair chassis which could accommodate small, medium, large, and x-large body types.

Rō Hydro Bike

Designer: Class of 2017 RO is a hydro bike with the focus on paraplegic users but at the same time enjoyable for everybody. The design emphasis is on safety, easy ingress and egress, and user independence. The final design is inviting, safe, and accessible.

A full keel along the vessel raises the craft above water increasing speed and performance while the bow cuts through water. Dual pontoons make the craft virtually unsinkable while keeping the hull stable during transfer.

Man2Mars

Designer: Class of 2018 The objective of this project was an exploration of habitat configurability and human mobility on Mars.

A collaboration between the ID program and the UH Sasakawa International Center for Space Architecture.

The primary objective was to explore new concepts for an inflatable operations and living module for Mars habitation, as well as a lander module that can be attached to an existing chassis for mobility on the Martian surface, and finally, a small vehicle concept for exploration on Mars. The project was initiated by the Space Architecture program in the Cullen College of Engineering, and based on the vision of legendary astronaut, Buzz Aldrin, and Larry Bell, Endowed

Professor and founder of the Sasakawa International Center for Space Architecture. The mission to build a human presence on Mars is complex and comprised of many systems and subsystems. There were well-defined parameters in three discrete areas for exploration.

Inflatable Habitat This system is comprised of hard and soft modules. The hard module provides the initial operational capability with pre-integrated utilities and equipment. The focus was on an integrated inflatable capsule that when inflated expands the habitable environment for the astronauts.

This inflatable environment can be customized to accommodate various living or laboratory applications.

Mars Lander Features included vertical landing orientation, radiation shelter to accommodate fice astronauts, and the ability to attach to an existing chassis for mobility

Mars Skipper The Skipper vehicle is designed for maximum mobility and speed. The Martian terrain is incredibly varied, including canyons, chasms, mountains, dried river and lakebeds, flood runoff plains, craters, volcanoes, ice fields, and dry ice fields. The proposed vehicle could leap (hop and skip) over craters, cliffs, and other obstacles.

INNSAEI

Designer: Juliette Larchoe, Class of 2017 INNSAEI is a scuba diving mask that increases communication capabilities between divers. With this mask, if two divers are out of the recommended safety range from each other, an aquamarine-colored light is illuminated on the edge of both dive masks. With the push of a button, a diver in danger can grab their diving buddy’s attention, and both masks light up in red.

Integrated in the floatation-capable mask is a redesigned skirt that lessens pressure on the diver’s face.

Wet Sounds

Designer: Class of 2019

“Thinking globally; acting locally.”

Design educators can easily incorporate place-based elements into their courses by considering the use of local materials and close-loop making processes, connecting with local industry, and using local issues and situations as concept/design prompts, in a more expansive and challenging mode. The ID program collaborated with Wet Sounds Inc., a Texas-based company, and the industry leader in premium marine audio systems.

Wet Sounds has exposed new market opportunities and would like to expand their product offering in these new market segments. With their expertise in audio for ‘wet’ environments, ID seniors were asked to explore design concepts for the outdoor patio, flowerbeds, and near-pool areas. This included above and below ground speakers and mobile and stationary audio solutions. Designs incorporated RGB led lighting, for mood lighting. Main components of the design were Wet Sounds 8” HLCD driver to down-fire into a cone to reflect the sound up and out and included a subwoofer at the bottom. The design achieved a 360-degree sound experience.

Knack

Designers: Niell Gorman, Class of 2021 David Edquilang, Class of 2022 Knack is an upper limb prosthesis developed to provide economically disadvantaged amputees with an improved ergonomic and functional prosthesis experience. It uses 3D scanning to achieve a perfect fit by collecting a highresolution model of the amputee’s body.

The 3D printing method allows for a lightweight prosthesis with high dexterity, leveraging the flexibility of the additive process to create customized components with a personalized aesthetic. The prosthetic hand mechanism was simplified by using elastic thermoplastic polyurethane hinge springs at all the joints. Kinetic movement comes from a hybrid system with body-powered arm actuation and a motorized hand unit. This project also won CORE77 Design Notable Awards.

ORO Delivery Module

Designer: Jacob Abraham, Class of 2022 ORO was born during Abraham’s senior year when his professor, ID co-director Mark Kimbrough, tasked the studio with developing a design addressing micro logistics. Kimbrough recommended Abraham and his classmates enter the Toyota Logistic Design Competition.

The opportunity asked designers to tackle one of several delivery issues, including how to deliver, what to deliver, where and when to deliver, and who will deliver.

Abraham decided to focus on how to deliver as the central idea of his design.

The 2022 Toyota Logistic Design Competition announced at Toyota’s Logiconomi Forum in Antwerp, Belgium, that University of Houston Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design industrial design (ID) student Jacob Abraham (’22) won the first place for his design of ORO, a delivery vehicle created for transportation of valuable items in urban environments. Organized by the Toyota Material Handling Europe Design Center, in collaboration with Toyota’s European Design Studio and Toyota Europe Design Development, the competition challenged students across the globe to develop strategies for delivery logistics in urban settings where delivery has become increasingly difficult due to increasing density.

Syntec

Designer: Sarah Wong, Class of 2023 Syntec is a device that has been designed to assist with the diagnosis of concussions. Using virtual reality and EEG technology, Syntec tracks a patient’s eye movements and brainwaves as they complete the VOMS test, allowing for a direct comparison with their baseline data to detect the presence of a concussion.

The entire process can be self-administered, taking only a few minutes to complete. Syntec is also portable and user-friendly, making it an invaluable tool for sports medicine professionals and athletes who require quick and accurate concussion assessment.

Revive

Designer: Andreina Pereira, Class of 2023 Dance is a physically demanding and high-risk activity, with ankle sprains being one of the most common injuries among professional dancers. Fatigue is one of the most perceived reasons for injuries reported by dancers, due to over-training. Revive is a system for at-home contrast therapy that addresses the lack of aesthetics and comfort for dancers to prevent and recover from ankle sprains.

Medic Restraint System within the patient compartment Designer: Elizabeth Reuter, Class of 2016 Those who work in Emergency Medical Services as medics have a difficult and dangerous job, the causes of which EMS as an industry is only beginning to address.

Preventing fatalities within the patient compartment is particularly difficult to implement. This Medic Restraint System takes a transformative approach when addressing how a safety solution would work within existing user workflows, and how to make it more comfortably adopted. It sets out to identify what factors of a medic’s job take the most toll, and uses user-centered design methodology to offer a solution that satisfies both users’ and administrators’ goals.

The solution consists of an overhead seat belt rail system attached safety harness that is integrated into the medic uniform. The value of this solution is an increased level of safety in the patient compartment that helps protect medics in the event of a crash, while allowing flexibility of movement so the medic may quickly and effectively treat their patient.

This system design concept has been recognized internationally as follows: Core77 Design Awards: Strategy and Research Category and Commercial Equipment Category; Global Graduate Show in Dubai (2017).

Grow: A Therapeutic Table for Children Designer: Andres Quintero, Class of 2018

The pediatric setting for speech-language pathology presents the challenge of dealing with a wide range of patients. On average, a speech-language pathologist performs eight to ten therapies per day, and their patients are between one year old and 16 years old.

The current furniture used in therapy is designed to be used by children for generic activities such as writing and coloring; however, children taking therapy are different in height, weight, and diagnostics. The therapist is an adult who spends ten hours daily sitting on chairs for kids. They tend to suffer back, shoulder, and neck pain. On the other hand, diverse therapy activities require different positions from the therapist relative to the child within the same session, including being at eye level with the child for several minutes.

Tag Along: A Novel System for Feeding Pumps Designer: Kristi Bartlett, Class of 2019 This study hypothesizes that involving “low-ranking” users in the design process will ultimately lead to better design outcomes. Equipment used to hang enteral feeding pumps, such as IV poles and specialized backpacks, was selected as an area of exploration for a case study in user involvement in the medical product design process.

Four families whose children use enteral feeding pumps participated in the study. Prototypes were tested by the participants in phase two of the study, and they provided feedback on the design. A final design was developed based on the participants’ suggestions to further improve it. The final design outcome was “Tag Along,” which is a modular system consisting of a short pole that holds the feeding bag and the feeding pump together as one unit, and can quickly be snapped into a tabletop stand, snapped into a clamp that can be attached to various equipment like wheelchairs, or can hang independently.

The participants made valuable contributions to the design in both phases of the research. The results of the case study supported the hypothesis because the involvement of users in the design process led to a design that was preferred by the users.

The final design is called “Tag Along,” because the main benefit of this new device is that it allows users the freedom to easily bring their feeding pump equipment anywhere.

MOLD

Designer: Cameron White, Class of 2021 Design-focused research has shown how diversityrelated considerations are central to the design process; yet and still, racially minoritized individuals are largely absent from the field of professional design. Such existing disparities in racial representation are not due to a shortage of potential designers of color, but rather a lack of access to design education and resources within racially minoritized communities.

Grounded in the notion that teaching design thinking aids individuals in building skills that translate to situations beyond design, expanding the reach of design education are beneficial to racial minorities’ personal development.

This project explores the development and application of a design toolkit that aims to facilitate design education in focal communities. Minorities’ Opportunity to Learn Design (MOLD) is an equity-driven platform that delivers a unique experience to design thinking and learning. Using an exploratory sequential approach, this study examines the impacts and values of MOLD in realworld settings.

INSU Health Design

Designer: Mason Lucich, Class of 2019 Hurricane Maria, a deadly category five hurricane, devastated Puerto Rico in 2017. It caused a massive power-outage on the island for more than six months.

The outage contributed to the death of more than 900 diabetics due to lose storage for their insulin. INSU Portable was created to alleviate the critical medical needs in such situations due to the power shortage.

The device is portable temperature-controlled storage for biomedicines with an outstanding efficiency in refrigeration that is superior that any product on the market.

INSU Health has won numerous Tech-driven startup awards. Most recently, the company won an SBIR 1 grant from the NSF and in the process of applying for SBIR phase 2 funding. The fully functioanl protoytpes have been built and the real world testing has begun.

INSU portable efficient cooling system includes the proprietary cooling unit and a quality thermal flask. The

container achieves a stable cooled range at a controlled temperature for days without additional power supply.

AURA 1.0 I NOVEL MEG HEADSET Designer: Zain Jamjoon, Class of 2021

MEG’s are one of the many brain imaging modalities being explored in restoring motor function for patients with mobility impairment. However, one of the main limitations of MEG’s is its bulky immobile hardware.

New OPM sensors are paving way for more wearable MEG systems.

Early concepts ranged from custom made headsets to flexible casts. Ultimately, a one-size-fits-all helmet was designed using anthropometric data. With the use of empirical user models, a precise CAD model of the helmet was made that would accommodate head sizes up to the 95th percentile. The sensor locations were accurately plotted following the 10/20 International standard.

T-ELECTRO

Designer: Suochun Fang, Class of 2023 Recently, the market of electric vehicles is growing at an incredible speed. With the support from both capital and policies, EV is going to be the new dominator of transportation. However, at least in U.S., there is a gap between existing charging infrastructure system and EV owner’s need. Many people would say that they are hesitant on buying an EV because they are worried about they will face so much inconvenience in finding a charging place. What is the best way to fill the gap?

Solution: Accessible Level 2 Charging “Most people in transportation focus on the five percent of the time that cars are moving, but the average car is parked 95 percent of the time.” - Donald Shoup, engineer and professor in urban planning at UCLA The level 2 charging requires significant less investment than level 3 charging. Therefore providers or governments no longer need to spend as much as a charging system that is consisted of complex DC chargers. The decreased cost on infrastructure will accelerate the expansion of charging spots, which would solve the most complained problem: insufficient chargers. Because most of the time a vehicle is parked, it would be effcient if users can charge with a Level 2 charger while being busy at their own things.
