-Either we continue to the old traditions and social production processes as it is.

Aligned centrally, nadi talaab(pond) intricately binds the three major communities at our site. If we trace out a historical background of the pond, it used to be the only source of water for the users of our site. Gradually due to the climatic change as well as human influence, a considerable amount of degradation has been experienced by nadi talaab. With the advent of new resources i.e. taps. The nadi talaab has lost its vitality, charm and character.

Change requires a certain time so that it can be effective and gets embedded in the people’s everyday lives.

Certain areas which were based on the concepts of older times have not changed according to the required demand.

In certain years the clay workers near the urban areas have shifted their products from pots to gamla’s.

Thus, a small example of how important it is to understand the demand in order to sustain.

A cohesive society is one where people are protected against life risks, trust their neighbours and the institutions of the state and can work towards a better future for themselves and their families.

Fostering social cohesion is about striving for greater inclusiveness, more civic participation and creating opportunities for upward mobility.

It is the glue that holds society together.

Traditional architecture is a result of man’s elemental needs and his intricate relationships with the society and the environment he lives in.

Every culture cannot sustain and absorb the shock of modernity.

There is a paradox: how to became modern and to return to the sources.

Agriculture being a major social and economic process on our site, this underused pond, once rehabilitated could be a viable alternative or resource. These ponds are not just essential for the humans but are also a primary source of drinking water for the fauna. They enhance the ecosystem as well as create a better and cooler living conditions and atmosphere in the surroundings.

Streets can also be recognized as the veins of any village which connects to our neighborhood as well as all the basic ammonites present on the site. A village street, as compared to the one in a city, can be explained to be more happening and lively. The selected section of our site includes a street that plays a major role in the society. On this street lies a masjid, madrasa, mandir and a school.

We included the street to be a part of our design process because it plates a platform for interaction for the users of our site. This street in already inculcated in the daily routine of the users as they sit and interact here throughout the day.

Unemployed streets we would call them. Designing here would never go unnoticed.

The concept was to reach the maximum amount of people, so that our design gets more effective.

DISCOVERING & SYNCHRONIZING NODES The design proposed is not just restricted to the selected site, as these unemployed gatherings/nodes can be easily seen in all the villages of India. It is an embarking solution or a prototype that can be modulised readily.

One of the major factors of development is understanding the demand and evolving accordingly which in our case these pot makers were not able to achieve.

Example- in certain years clay workers near the urban areas have shifted their products from pots to gamlas, ceramics etc.

Thus a small example of how important it is to understand the demand in order to sustain.

EMBARKING THE BRIDGE We plan to design small technically enabled sections. These would attract the users where they could be fully benefitted by the latest technological advancements. One of the major reasons for the degrading social production processes is lack of knowledge and awareness. We understand that there is a crucial need to develop a bridge between these artists and various other art forms so that they get a platform to explore different types of clay work etc. that they have been practicing in a very narrow mind set.

The design interventions are in the form of platforms and are made out of a combination of new building methods and vernacular materials.

The solution introduces the users to the urban reality about the new and better materials as well as advanced methods and techniques. It shall also help them learn marketing so that they could learn how to get the maximum amount from their product.

This process will not only educate them but will eliminate the role of middle men so that they could directly sell their work at the best price possible. The users of our site are fascinated by latest technology and are also found wasting their time using mobile phones etc.

“ IN ORDER TO GET ON THE ROAD TOWARDS MODERNISATION IT IS NECESSARY TO JETTISON THE OLD CULTURAL PAST. IT IS A FACT : EVERY CULTURE CANNOT SUSTAIN AND ABSORB THE SHOCK OF MODERN CIVILISATION. THERE IS A PARADOX : HOW TO BECOME MODERN AND RETURN TO THEIR SOURCES. ”
