jointed limbs just like many other arachnids that include spiders, mite and ticks. The body is divided into two major segments, the head and thorax which are broadly united into a cephalothorax. The mouthparts are the cheliceri which are capable of tearing food and ripping prey apart as scorpions generally permit only liquefied food; and the abdomen that also includes the menacing-looking segmented tail. They are nocturnal and fossorial, finding shelter during the day in the relative cool of burrows that they dig or undersides of rocks, and emerging at night to hunt and feed. Some species like to hide under cracks and logs. In the homes, scorpions usually hide under utensils like water pots; but also in shoes, clothing, in wall-cracks as well as under mats. Generally, they prefer moist spots.

A Symbol Meaning of Stinging Importance

1. Introduction Throughout history, scorpions have appeared in human cultures, being revered and attributed special powers, feared as sinister and ominous creatures. Scorpion images appear in religious symbols on seals, magical tablets, amulets and boundary stones and in the origin stories of ancient civilizations like those of the Egyptians and the Chaldeans. They also featured prominently in the Greek mythology.

Despite their many superstitions and misconceptions, they persist to this day. Their reputation as venomous creatures is generally overstated since most scorpions are not

aggressive and inflict pain and discomfort in selfdefense only when threatened.

The most interesting feature in a scorpion is its stinger at the end of its curving tail. Like a curled fist, the partially coiled tail seems to indicate that its wearer is a fighter, someone to be aware of, and someone not to cross. This little creature is also well recognized in many tattoo depictions where emphasis is on the sharpness of its stinger, like a small exploding bomb at the end of the tail.

3. The origins and taxonomic classification of scorpions Scorpions are amongst the earliest land lifeforms and their evolutionary history goes back to the early Paleozoic Era. They represent a group of arachnids that is believed to have descended from the now extinct eurypterids-sea scorpions. The oldest known scorpion fossil record is from the 430 million years old Silurian Marine Sediments.

More fossils have been found from amber, the

estuarine Devonian deposits and coal deposits of Carboniferous Periods respectively. However, the first totally terrestrial scorpion fossil dates about 320 million years old.

So far, there are thirteen extant families of scorpions around the world today and about 1,500 species and subspecies have been described.

Besides, there are about 111 described fossil taxa of scorpions which are known to be extinct (Soleglad & Fet, 2003).

4. The scorpion taxonomy for Malawi The scorpion fauna of Malawi is up until now poorly known. The present state of the knowledge, therefore, is still based on old materials collected before the use of UV-lights and other moderntrapping methods. It is a known fact, however, that the scorpion diversity in Malawi is probably greater than previously known as evidenced by the current description of new species. The current scorpion checklist for Malawi shows that there are three scorpion families with 10 species. However, the list will soon or later be updated due to new species being discovered. For example, Uroplectes malawicus is Malawi’s own scorpion record, new to science.

As more discoveries are going on, another species by the name of Babycurus sp, is yet to described, but would indicate a new species. Below is a description of the checklist for Malawi: Cont. on pg 10

of environments. Today, they are distributed across all continents except Antarctica; and are found virtually in ecological habitats that include rain forests, woodlands, deserts, grasslands and

Scorpions, however, did not occur naturally in some places like Great Britain, New Zealand and some of the islands in Oceania, but have been accidentally introduced in some of these places through human trade and commerce. As regards microhabitats, scorpions may be grounddwelling, tree-living, lithophilic (rock-loving) or/ and psammophilic (sand-loving).

However, most scorpions prefer areas with temperatures similar to humans; these are warmer tropical or subtropical climates where the temperatures range from 20 to 37 °C. It has been reported that scorpions may survive temperatures ranging from well below freezing point to about −25 °C.

5. Scorpions’ geographical distribution and ecological habitats Scorpions are skillful at adapting to a wide range

other terrestrial habitat including high-elevation mountains, caves and intertidal zones, with the exception of boreal ecosystems, such as the tundra, high-altitude taiga and the permanently snow-clad tops of some mountains.

6. Reproduction Most scorpions reproduce sexually. However, there are some other species that reproduce through a process known as parthenogenesis; where unfertilized eggs develop into living embryos starting at the final molt to maturity. In scorpions that reproduce sexually, the transfer of spermatophore is effected through a complex courtship and mating ritual. They are viviparous which make them unique from the majority of the arachnids.

The young are borne one by one, and the brood is carried about on its mother’s back for weeks until

the young have undergone at least one molt or metamorphosis and then start living solitary. Some species can have over 100 viviparous off-springs at once.

7. Scorpions feeding habits and their prey All species of scorpions have the ability to sting and the venom serves to interfere with the neurotransmission in the victim which is fast acting to weaken the prey within the shortest time possible before devouring it. They are opportunistic predators which survive on many kinds of insects, small mammals and reptiles. For example, they feed on rodents, pinkie (baby mouse) small lizards, crickets, spiders, cockroaches, centipedes, millipedes, snails and meal worms. Scorpions are also capable of killing animals larger than themselves by injecting the venom such as small lizards and mice. It is also known that scorpions practice cannibalism, where mainly the females pounce on the males after copulation.

9. Scorpion stings and symptoms Scorpions are amongst the scariest creatures in the veld; although fatalities resulting from their stings are quite rare.

Normally, stings from the majority of scorpions are not threatening to human life, and therefore, do not require any treatment at all for healthy adults.

However, stings from some particular species require medical care at all cost.

Scorpions can both bite using the chelae and sting using the stinger. The venom from their stinger serves a number of functions namely: to restrain prey, used during their mating rituals, and for defense.

Scorpions can consume huge amounts of food at one time. They have a very efficient food storage system and a very low metabolic rate combined with a relatively inactive lifestyle. This enables scorpions to survive long periods when deprived of food. Some scorpions are able to survive 6 to 12 months of starvation.

8. Scorpions as prey Scorpions also appear in the natural food-web as prey to other animals. Their predators include shrews, owls, bats, hornbills, Jackals, also mongoose and meerkats. However, as a survival strategy, scorpions exhibit photophobic behavior, primarily to evade detection by predators such as birds, centipedes, lizards, mice, opossums, and rats.

The potency of venom varies according to species.

A sting from some type of scorpions is more toxic and lethal. The severity of the sting can be equated to that from the bite of some snakes such as the spitting cobras and mambas. Cobras and mambas also have neurotoxic venom that attacks the central nervous system just like that of a scorpion. In scorpions, however, the severity of the sting will depend on several factors such as the

It starts by affecting movement, breathing, swallowing, speech and sight and can cause death due to respiratory insufficiency.

10. Anatomical features of venomous and non-venomous scorpions The thick-tailed scorpions in the family Buthidae are reputed the most dangerous in the world. The general rule of the thumb to distinguish dangerous scorpions from those that are mildly toxic to humans is that the highly venomous have thick tails and thin pincers while the mildly venomous have thin tails and thick pincers. Although scorpions with broad pincers often look fearsome, these pincers are just for grabbing as the sting is in the tail. This rule applies to all scorpions throughout the world.

The Indian Red Scorpion mostly resident in India, Nepal and Pakistan has been said to be one of the most lethal in the world. Just a sting, victims typically experience nausea, heart problems, discoloration of the skin, and, in more severe cases, pulmonary edema- an accumulation of fluid in the lungs. Pulmonary edema causes shortness of breath and could lead to death. The severity of these symptoms is dependent on the amount of venom injected and the susceptibility of the victim.

11. Home remedies for scorpion sting

The Deathstalker scorpion is another one on the list. Its venom is highly toxic. The symptoms of its sting include an increased heartbeat, high blood pressure, and even convulsions and coma.

The Arabian Fat-Tailed Scorpion is another one.

Its lethal punch can cause a number of terrible symptoms, including seizures, unconsciousness, and hypertension.

On the list of scorpion species recorded in Malawi, Hottentotta trilineatus, is one of the known venomous scorpions. This is said to be Malawi’s most dangerous scorpion, whose sting requires medical care particularly to the young, old, sick individuals and pregnant women. It is a medium

During instances of a scorpion sting, victims normally seek medical therapy both conventional and traditional. Herbs are used to treat scorpion stings. An account below gives a general overview of what is required once stung by a scorpion: • Ice the site of a scorpion sting to combat pain and inflammation.

• Cleanse the wound site with soap and water.

• Apply a cold compress on the site to calm pain and slow the spread of the scorpion’s venom.

• Slow the spread of scorpion venom by staying calm and quiet.

• For a sting on a hand, immerse it in a container of regular ammonia.

• Make a paste of baking soda and apply it to the sting spot until the painful sensations has subsided.

• Use the juice from a mango leaf to treat a scorpion sting. Some people also consume the mango juice in order to combat pain.

• Apply meat tenderizer paste to the site to calm the pain of a scorpion sting.

• Papaya extract breaks down the proteins found in the venom. This remedy also works for bee and wasp stings.

• Avoid eating or drinking once stung as a scorpion sting will cause your throat to swell – making it

difficult to swallow. This is the case for some of the Parabuthids, i.e. Hottentotta.

12. Cultural beliefs about scorpions Scorpions are very popular in cultural beliefs; appearing in form of myths, legends and fables.

Many of these cultural beliefs are until today still being retold. Below is an account of just a handful: Myths • In the Greek mythology, the scorpion’s sting made Orion immortal in the form of the constellation of Orion.

• Another story goes that when Medusa was slain by Perseus, the blood that leaked out of Medusa’s neck turned into snakes and scorpions.

• The Egyptians thought that the Scorpion was a type of god that was in place to help protect royalty. They also had a scorpion goddess that was thought to help ease the pain of childbirth. The scorpion, therefore, stood a lasting symbol of maternal sacrifice. The scorpion was also associated with the ancient Egyptian god of the desert, called Set. • The Mayas believed that because the scorpion numbs its prey after stinging, they associated the scorpion with surgery.

• There is a belief that a scorpion surrounded by a ring of fire would sting itself to death; but scorpions are immune to their own sting, this is highly unlikely.

• In South Asia, a scorpion is often found in the art of the Islamic religion. It is viewed as a protective force that can help to save them from evil.

• Ironically, in some cultures, the scorpion is a

symbol of death and of evil. Despite this fact, medicine from this creature is administered to help patients from various illnesses The scorpion is a constant reminder that death walks with us. We should always remember that we are in a liminal state - in the process of crossing a threshold There is a belief that the smaller the scorpion, the deadlier the sting Some people believe that the sting of a baby scorpion is more poisonous and probably more dangerous than the sting of an adult.

The fact is the venom in a scorpion’s stinger is the same all through a scorpion’s life.

The biggest myth is that all scorpions are deadly, this is totally untrue. But, for all animals that fall prey to scorpions, it is a rule of the thumb that all scorpions are deadly poisonous.

In astronomy, the major stars in the night sky were grouped into twelve constellations that include Scorpio. Scorpio is a water sign that is given to people born between October 24 and November 22. All people born under Scorpio are said to have the following qualities: Willfulness, Highly emotional and sensitive, Imaginative and intuitive, Sensual, Loyal and devote, Dignified, Controlling and even manipulative and Perseverant.

African Parks is leading one of the largest elephant translocations in human history in collaboration with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Malawi (DNPW).

Over this year and next, as many as 500 elephants will be moved from Liwonde National Park and Majete Wildlife Reserve to Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve. All three parks are in Malawi and are managed by African Parks, a conservation NGO, in partnership with DNPW. African elephants are being killed at an unprecedented rate in many parts of Africa.

It is against this backdrop that African Parks leads a pioneering translocation project enabling Malawi’s national herd to thrive while boosting sustainable economic opportunities for local people. In Majete and Liwonde, where large elephant populations are having an impact on the habitat as well as causing conflict with local communities, small family units are being captured by teams of experts and transported to Nkhotakota, where there has been an overhaul of law enforcement and anti-poaching work in

the park to protect these new residents. The 500 Elephants translocation forms part of an immense restoration scheme that aspires to rejuvenate Nkhotakota as a sustainable and iconic wildlife tourism treasure.

By mid-August this year, African Parks successfully relocated over 261 elephants from Liwonde to their sanctuary in Nkhotakota. The elephants, comprising 29 mature bulls and 22 family groups, are reported to be healthy and adjusting well to their new surroundings. In addition to the elephant translocation, African Parks has moved over a thousand animals of other game species, including waterbuck, impala, kudu, sable, warthog and buffalo to repopulate Nkhotakota and reestablish ecological sustainability in all reserves. With Liwonde, Nkhotakota and Majete under effective protection, Malawi is becoming a country of hope for wildlife conservation and for the recovery of elephants in the region.

Majete Wildlife Reserve Majete Wildlife Reserve is situated in southern Malawi, where it straddles the Shire River, and its woodlands and plains provide sustenance to the thousands of animals that inhabit the park. This bears testament to a remarkable recovery, as the park was practically depleted of its wildlife due to rampant poaching before African Parks assumed management in 2003. The ambitious restoration activities undertaken since then have resulted in elephants, rhino, leopard, lion and numerous game species being reintroduced to the park, which has flourished as a pioneering national conservation success story.

Liwonde National Park Liwonde National Park has the largest population of elephants remaining in Malawi as well as over 400 species of birds that inhabit landscapes of breathtaking beauty, in which sun-bleached floodplains are punctuated by lofty palms and greenmisted fever trees cluster along the banks of the Shire River. Since assuming management of the park in 2015, African Parks has been

working to alleviate human-elephant conflict by fencing the perimeter of the park and working with local communities to mitigate negative interactions with wildlife. From July 3rd 2016, elephants were progressively moved in cohesive units from Liwonde National Park’s reservoir of surplus elephants to Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve as part of one of the largest and most significant elephant translocations ever undertaken.

Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve stretches from the Great Rift Valley to just shy of Lake Malawi.

Exceptional miombo woodlands cloak its hills and Afromontane forest shades the slopes of Chipata Mountain. Decades of unrelenting poaching depleted Nkhotakota’s wildlife, diminishing its population of 1,500 elephants to fewer than 100 today. African Parks assumed management of the reserve in 2015, and is restoring its biodiversity through the reintroduction of key species, including elephants and over 1,500 animals of other game species translocated from source populations in Liwonde and Majete.

These conservation efforts have overseen the homecoming of a myriad of species, restoring important environmental components and reinvigorating the park as an asset for its people.

This is an extremely hopeful story for conservation, elephants, Malawi and the people involved. It is a grand initiative with numerous positive outputs: relieving two parks of human-elephant conflict and better protecting those ecosystems and their habitats; while simultaneously restoring wildlife to a park that has been depleted through poaching. The addition of elephants to Nkhotakota will improve its tourism value, its overall park development, and its contribution to local employment by fueling a conservation-led economy. In the face of grave threats to African elephants, moving 500 elephants in Malawi emerges as a globally important campaign to support their chances of survival within a climate of sustainable economic growth.

The safe delivery of the final family group in Nkhotakota in the second week of August brought to a close the first component of the 500 Elephants translocation, with the remainder scheduled for 2017.

African Parks is a non-profit conservation organisation that takes on the direct responsibility for the long-term management of national parks in partnership with governments and local communities.

2011 marks the centenary of the publication of the first edition of the Concise Oxford Dictionary in 1911. In a hundred years the Concise has become a trusted record of the development of our language. Each edition has followed the tradition of the first in supplying a clear and up-to-date record of current English.

How it all began …

Oxford University Press had been working on the vast Oxford English Dictionary (OED) since the mid-nineteenth century. The first part had been published by 1884 and by 1906 they had reached the letter M. By then, the Press had a different project in mind: the production of a smaller, more accessible dictionary for the general reader.

To tackle this, Humphrey Milford, the then Assistant Secretary to the Delegates, decided to write to Henry and Frank Fowler, two brothers who had already worked with the Press on the usage guide The King’s English.

They were just the pair to take on the project which Humphrey described as a pleasant occupation taking up three hours a day.

In fact, it was an immense undertaking. The brothers sought to condense the mammoth resources of the OED, both published and archived, into one easy volume. Each word had to be scrutinized and selected and each entry carefully composed. To condense the OED the Fowlers removed nearly all archaic or obsolete words, but they also included a variety of slang and colloquial expressions to capture the English language as it was spoken in their time.

By 1911 the first edition of the Concise Oxford Dictionary was finally complete, but publication was only the beginning.

A record of our language The many upheavals and social changes of the twentieth century brought a constant flow of new words and updating the Concise was an ongoing process. By 1914 the first

‘addenda’ or supplement was added to the first edition, including such additions as cinema, movies, and Zeppelin. 1929 saw the publication of a second edition containing new words coined during the First World War, including trench foot and trench coat.

The perpetual task of updating the Concise continued as each edition sought to include the newest words of its age: the 1940s saw the inclusion of wartime phrases such as blitz and Gestapo while in the 1950s new terms of science and technology such as antibiotic and clone were added.

Over time, the process of including new words has changed dramatically: in the early twentieth century the entire dictionary was set in metal plates which had to be melted down and recast to include any changes, so that it was much easier to include new words in addenda than to incorporate them in the main text. These metal plates were still being used well into the 1950s.

Individual editors have made their mark on the dictionary over time. After the death of Frank in 1918 and Henry in 1934 the editorship was taken over by Henry Le Mesurier and then Ernest McIntosh in 1940. Both were schoolmasterly types who lived and worked in rented rooms in Exmouth, Devon. In many ways, the inclusion of words was down to their personal taste and influence. For example, McIntosh (by then 70 years old) was somewhat resistant to the swinging sixties and decided not to include words such as fab and mod, although beatnik was added.

After the death of McIntosh in 1970 the production of the dictionary was moved to Oxford University Press premises. Now a full team of people would work together on the research and selection of words and be able to work even more closely with the OED editorial team.

development of road maps, operational toolkits and a blueprint for rabies prevention and control; and opportunities for scaling up and replication of successful programs.

Progress must continue towards overcoming the remaining challenges preventing the ultimate goal of rabies elimination.

THE BURDEN OF RABIES Human rabies ranks 7th among other infectious diseases in the world, but human deaths could be avoided. Perhaps the fundamental measure of a nation’s vitality is the health and longevity of its citizens. Rabies threatens this by killing almost anyone infected if not treated in time. Though animal rabies does not threaten rural economys elimination will essentially benefit human health services, which should share the cost of this elimination.

This zoonosis is entirely preventable, but by focusing solely upon rabies prevention in humans, this “incurable wound” persists at high costs. Although preventing human deaths through canine rabies elimination is feasible, dog rabies control is often neglected, because dogs are not considered typical economic commodities by the most part of the Malawian populace. It has been demonstrated elsewhere that the responsibility of managing rabies falls upon multiple sectors and that a truly integrated approach is the key to rabies elimination. International achievements include the construction of global rabies networks and organizational partnerships;

RABIES PREVENTION AND CONTROL ;A PUBLIC GOOD? Rabies control literary means rabies control in animals. If rabies is controlled in animals then there will be no rabies in people. The ultimate goal is creating a rabies free environment.

Rabies control is therefore a public good.

To be a public good, a rabies free environment should be non-rival and non-excludable. This however is not easy in Malawi as in many developing countries due to the following: a. Rabies vaccination of dogs is not free there are lots of costs involved. b. Competition for priorities in the national budget with other important diseases like Malaria, TB, HIV-AIDS, FMD. c. Budgets for rabies control are mostly insufficient since there is no criteria for cost estimation. d. The return on investment (human life) is not directly linked to the size of the budget. If the budget were to be linked to the lives to be saved may be the budget could be scaled up. e. The cost of rabies prevention in animals is more than just the cost of vaccine for animals.

NEED FOR COOPERATION BETWEEN HUMAN AND ANIMAL HEALTH PROFESSIONS Though this has been emphasized and pledged since 1928 in several Resolutions of OIE, by researchers, numerous publications it has not taken root in many countries including Malawi.

However, it is pleasing to note that from last year’s annual rabies campaign month preparatory meetings there were pledges for closer cooperation and inter-sectorial liaison for rabies prevention and control between ministries of Agriculture, Health, wildlife and the civil society. Good governance of the vaccination campaign would go a long way in reducing human rabies cases.

MALAWI RABIES CAMPAIGN MONTH Rabies is the primary responsibility of the veterinary profession to prevent and control.

To control the disease the Ministry has been mounting a one week anti rabies vaccination week from 2004 to 2008. From 2009 the period was changed to one month to allow many people to have their dogs vaccinated hence the rabies campaign month. Although the period was extended to one month, the number of dogs vaccinated is not 100%. This is due to inadequate human, physical and financial resources and some pet owners do not bring their dogs and cats for vaccination deliberately.

The upper reaches of the high Viphya Plateau in Northern Malawi are ideally suited to horse riding safaris. Being a beautiful wilderness area topped by Kawanadma Mountain (2000M) with its long grassy ridges stretching outwards in all directions with panoramic views to the east of Lake Malawi. Riding along these remote mountain ridges you get a feeling of the vastness of the Viphya and a taste of peace, beauty and solitude which is difficult to find in these modern times.

To this end, Luwawa Forest Lodge and Viphya Plateau Stables have teamed up to provide a full package of accommodation and horse riding activities in this beautiful wilderness area.

Viphya Plateau Stables have nine horses ranging from Thoroughbreds, Friesians a Warmblood to a Clydesdale that will suit all rider abilities. Even if you are a beginner we can take you on any ride up to three hours. Around the Lodge you can ride in the indigenous forest, through the pine forest or in the little trod grasslands. If you are an experienced rider we can go on longer rides up to the high plateau where the views go on forever. In the future you will be able ride a 75-kilometer trail with shelters every 25 kilometers where you can stay the night before going on the next day to the next shelter. If you are really looking for something special, we are in the process of planning, in association with Kande Horse, a 6-day safari from Luwawa to the Lake at Kande. Viphya Plateau Stables will get you to Kande where Kande Horse will take over and you can ride on the beach and into the Lake. If you want something more modest in a safari we can take you to truly wilderness areas that will be all yours for the time that you are there.

The Angling Clubs of Malawi The ‘Nyasaland Angling Society”, first established in 1939, at Independence, in 1960 became known as the ‘Angling Society of Malawi’ (ASOM). Currently, ASOM is made up of two clubs. The ‘Lilongwe and Districts Angling Club’ (LADAC), founded in 1990 promotes fishing in Lake Malawi using artlure and light tackle. The Southern Region Angling Club (SoRAC), established in 2004 caters for river and dam fishing, mostly with bait.

ASOM’s vision for its Clubs is to maximize the safety, environmental sustainability and recreational pleasure of angling in the National waters of Malawi. Each Club hosts monthly league events for men, ladies and juniors following ASOM and IGFA regulations. Rules are applied in a professional, fair and equitable manner, transparent to all,

encouraging integrity, sportsmanship, fellowship and team spirit. Both Clubs encourage catch and release, set minimum size limits, quotas and prohibit fishing in the National Parks. LADAC also hosts an annual international event on Lake Malawi.

Fishing Lake Malawi There are over 900 species of endemic fish found in Lake Malawi, of which around 18 are angling species. The most common species caught casting are Lyani. They are open water shoaling fish generally found near rocky outcrops and around islands. Average weights are between 200g and 400g, but for their size, they certainly put up a great fight.

Other main species targeted are the Lake Tiger, or Mcheni, usually caught whilst deep water trolling and usually average 400g to 1kg.

All these works of our early ancestors are present in the Solonje area, in the west of the park close to the Zambian border. Miondwe Wildlife Camp is the nearest park station to these treasures.

For climbers, Miondwe, Wang’ombe Rumen, Singwe and Chipiri Hills provide a perfect opportunity to stretch a few muscles!

Lake Malawi National Park This, the world’s first freshwater National Park and a World Heritage Site, is within the Nankumba peninsula, where the lake breaks into two arms.

Kasungu National Park In the west of the central region, bordering Zambia is Kasungu National Park, an 800 sq mile (2100 sq km) area of natural woodland and bush with occasional stretches of more open grass.

Poaching has reduced the number of some species of animals but, contrary to rumours in some quarters, there is still plenty of wildlife to be seen.

Elephants and antelopes are common, as are small herds of buffalo and zebra. The cats include both lions and leopards. Inhabiting the bush are hyenas, wild dogs, servals and jackals. There is a significant number of hippos in the lake at Lifupa and as elsewhere in Malawi, the birdwatcher is well catered for.

Cape Maclear is the most well known for tourism part of the park but Maleri Islands, Nkhudzi Hills and Nkhudzi Spit, Mwenya Hills and Monkey Bay as well as Thumbi East are also beautiful locations within the park.

It was designated as a National Park in 1980, to protect the diversity of tropical fish living there, some not found anywhere else on earth. The park includes a land area around the cape and bay, as well as the lake and islands up to 100 metres (330ft) off shore. Here is a veritable aquarium of tropical fish providing a colourful kaleidoscopic display. Of the countless thousands of freshwater

Boats are available for hire and the fish will feed directly from the hand.

Away from the Lake, the park has baboons, antelope and hyrax and of course, there is a great variety of birdlife including fish eagles, cormorants and hamerkops.

There is a lot to do for the tourist in Lake Malawi National Park. These include, sunset boat rides, snorkelling, scuba diving, bicycle rides through the village or up the hilly road, swimming, going on traditional fishing trips on dugouts with the locals, learning how to prepare traditional meals and many others….the local guides will brief you about all this!

Hiking on the park’s many hills will be an experience you would not forget. The park also has cultural and historical sites like the first Livingstonia Mission site by Scottish Missionaries and their grave site, Mwala wa Mphini (the Rock with natural tattoos),the cross painting, Otter point and the Ilala ship yard at Monkey Bay, where Malawi’s oldest sailing ship starts its journeys up north and back.

Lengwe National Park This park is 350 sq miles (900 sq km) in extent at only an hours drive (80 km) from Blantyre.

The vegetation is thicket, with some deciduous woodland and denser tree growth along the stream courses. In the eastern area a network of

Lengwe is quite arid outside the rainy season and many of the water courses become dry sandy channels. This aids game viewing because it forces the animals to use the few pools that are permanent supplies of water. There are hides and man-made pools in the eastern area of the park just a short distance from the main gate. The advantages of the hides are that one may see a mix of wildlife together at the water-hole. The park is the most northern place in the world to find indigenous Nyala. Other antelope like the magnificent kudu also roam the park as do common duiker, the small Livingstone’s suni, bushbuck and impala. Baboon, vervet and blue monkeys, bush-baby, warthog, bush pig and buffalo are also seen in the park.

In total there are five species of primates. Predators are leopard and hyena. The birdlife of Lengwe is attractive with about 300 or so species recorded.

The government tourist lodge was renovated and refurbished in 2003 and now operates as Nyala Lodge.

Depending on rainfall other than road leading to Nyala Lodge some of the other roads in the park are inaccessible in January or February.

Game viewing can be done on foot using either guides from Nyala Lodge or scouts from the Lengwe National Park office.

Liwonde National Park Although only 220 sq miles (580 sq km). It is about 100 miles (160 km) north of Blantyre and only more than half that distance from the hotels on the southern lakeshore. Additionally, game viewing is enhanced because the River Shire flows along its western border.

Wildlife includes large numbers of elephants and the river attracts countless hippos and crocodiles.

Antelope include kudu, sable and bushbuck.

There are lions, leopards and more recently, the black rhino has been re-introduced into the rhino sanctuary, currently there are 16 rhinos in the sanctuary which are planned to be released sometime in the near future.

Wildlife Reserves

Birdlife is exceptionally varied. Pel’s fishing owl is often seen at dusk along the river’s edge. There is accommodation in the way of Mvuu Lodge and nearby Mvuu Camp. To reach the riverside lodge, visitors can approach by road and then be ferried across the river, they can drive through the park or they can use a pre-arranged boat from Liwonde town. In the southern region of the park, close to town, there is also accommodation available at Liwonde Safari Camp and Bushman’s Baobabs.

There is an airstrip, served by scheduled and charter flights.

Inside Majete there are three different types of accommodation. Situated around a serene floodlit waterhole that attracts a variety of wildlife, Thawale Lodge is a peaceful haven from which to experience Majete. Completely unfenced, the camp is regularly visited by wildlife. Thawale Lodge offers six double and twin tented chalets all en-suite and each with its own private veranda overlooking the waterhole. There is also a family chalet with two onsuite bedrooms, veranda and living room. In the north of the reserve, Robin Pope Safaris operate in a private concession and run the exclusive up market Mkulumadzi Lodge.

Nyika National Park In 1965 the Nyika National Park became the first certified park in Malawi. Nyika is Malawi’s largest park with an area of no less than 1250 sq miles (3200 sq km). It extends across the great plateau which is essentially a granitic dome and its environment is like none other in Africa. The name, Nyika, means “where the water comes from” and it is, indeed, one of Malawi’s most important catchment areas. The rolling scenery is at its best in the rainy season when over 200 types of orchid are in flower. The grasslands of Nyika are also rich in wildflowers in other seasons.

Nyika is wonderful for trekking, with the route from Chilinda in the centre of the park to Livingstonia Mission and then eventually to the lake at Chitimba!

A number of other walking trails are also possible just within the plateau, ranging in length from a night to three nights long.

Mountain biking, walking and driving day safaris, as well as more conventional 4x4 excursions are available. The montane vegetation attracts large numbers of antelope from the diminutive duiker to eland and roan. Zebra are common. The park has one of the highest densities of leopard in central Africa and there are a number of species of smaller mammals such as warthog and bush pig. Elephants and buffalo usually keep to the lower ground on the northern edge of the park but elephants have been seen on the high plateau, on a number of occasions.

For the birdwatcher, the park has a lot to offer: over 400 species have been recorded. The rare Denham’s bustard and the wattled crane are among those to be seen, as is the red-winged

francolin - endemic to Nyika.

There is such a lot to see and do in the vast park: waterfalls, a Neolithic rock shelter, trout fishing and even a ‘magic lake’ are just some of the attractions. There is an airstrip for fly-in safaris.

Michuiru Nature Sanctuary Michiru Nature Sanctuary is situated 9 km from Blantyre and is part of Michiru Mountain. It is a beautiful area of 12.5 sq. km. which consists of brachystegia woodland and some riverine forest. There is wildlife present namely hyaena, bushbuck, common duiker, porcupine, civet cat, genet, hyrax and Cape hare. Over 200 species of birds have been recorded. For visitors there are an Education / Interpretation Centre, a Picnic Spot with barbeque and six trails of varying length including one to the Peak (1470 m) affording superb views as far as Zomba Mountain to the east and the Shire Valley across to the Kirk Range in the west. Michiru Nature Sanctuary is managed by the Department of National Parks and Wildlife and receives huge support from the Blantyre Branch of the Wildlife and Environmental Society of Malawi.

The Society maintains the trails and trail signage, repairs bridges, provides a snare bounty and has obtained funding for eleven scout houses.

This lovely area provides a haven of peace away from the bustle and noise of Blantyre City and is the only mountain around Blantyre that still has indigenous forest and some wildlife.

Majete Wildlife Reserve Majete Wildlife Reserve is a 70,000 hectare tract of pristine bush in the southern region of Malawi, one hour’s drive from Blantyre. In 2003 African Parks, in agreement with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife, took over the management of the Reserve. To date, over 142km of fencing has been completed around Majete and its total length is patrolled on a daily basis. In addition, 250km of road network has been constructed. The most significant change which has really seen Majete come back to life is the reintroduction of species previously eradicated by poaching. Since 2003 over 2,500 animals have been reintroduced from fourteen species including elephant, black rhino, leopard, buffalo, eland and sable, and these have increased to over 10,000 animals today. Lion were re-introduced in 2012 making Majete one of the only reserves in Malawi where the BIG FIVE can be viewed all year round.

The community camp-site is equipped with a thatched bar and dining space, barbeque area, toilets and hot solar showers and all revenue goes directly to the communities running it. Near to the entrance of the gate the Heritage Centre includes a curio shop, Environment Education Centre and a swimming pool is being built. There is the Mwembezi restaurant which overlooks a water hole where animals come to drink where a variety of Malawian and western cuisine is offered as well as snacks, cold drinks, beer and tea and coffee. Wildlife Reserves

Wildlife Reserves With open savannah and magnificent rocky outcrops that allow 360 degree views over the mopane woolands, Mwabvi is an oasis of tranquillity. Wildlife includes kudu, buffalo, impala, warthogs, sable, steenbok, samango monkeys and baboons. There are also over 350 species of bird, including the protected ground hornbill and numerous spectacular native and migratory species, making it a paradise for avid birdwatchers. Day trips are available and it is possible to camp close to Mwabvi River Gorge Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve Nkhotakota, to the east of the region and near the Lake, is one of the two large game areas in the central region. Its vast 700 sq miles (1800 sq km) is of rugged terrain crossed by a number of rivers, which tumble down the edge of the escarpment as they make their way to the Lake. Most of the reserve is miombo woodland with large patches of tall grasses and 40 Ha. of evergreen forest on the summit of Chipata Mountain.

This is a wonderful example of true wilderness, which particularly attracts those who wish to enjoy walking safaris, fishing and climbing. Access to the reserve is possible with saloon cars during the dry season, but within the reserve, walking is the preferred mode of travelling because there are few roads or driveable tracks. The range of mammals is as good as anywhere in Malawi although the environment makes viewing difficult. Elephant, buffalo, lion and leopard are all present. Roan and sable, kudu and waterbuck and a wide variety of smaller antelope, as well as zebra, all occur within the reserve boundaries. The Bua River is home to a larger number of crocodiles. Birdlife is prolific with giant kingfishers, Boehm’s bee-eaters, finfoot and palm nut vultures among over 200 recorded species.

Vwaza Wildlife Reserve Vwaza Wildlife Reserve, an area of marsh and plain, with a few rocky outcrops, is all of 400 sq miles (1000 sq km) and lies along the Zambian border north-west of Mzuzu.

The reserve has a wonderful mix of vegetation: forest and grassland, thin woodland and marsh.

It is this rich habitat which attracts a splendid range of birdlife. Nearly 300 species of birds have been recorded including stork, heron and the white-faced tree duck. Herds of thirty or forty elephants are regularly to be seen and there are large numbers of hippos. Lake Kazuni, near the main entrance to the reserve is famous for its hippos. Buffalo are present in the reserve but their roaming habits make their sightings less easy to predict. Kazuni Safari Camp offer accommodation in this area.

Just outside the reserve is the community-owned Chigwere Cultural Lodge, an initiative by the community under the guidance of the Department of Parks and Wildlife. The intention is to make sure communities take part in the tourism activities in the area to ensure that they economically benefit from eco-tourism.

On 22nd July 2015, African Parks signed an agreement with government acting through the Department of Parks and Wildlife under Ministry of Information, Tourism and Culture to manage, finance and develop Nkhota Kota Wildlife Reserve for a period of 25 years on a Public Private Partnership Agreement. Africa Parks is building a 15,000 hectare sanctuary to accommodate 500 elephants and several other antelopes; putting in place a network of roads that will cater for the management of the reserve and tourism.

Access to the reserve is largely by road either from Mzuzu, the Northern city of Malawi or from Tanzania, passing through Rumphi District Headquarters or from Nyika National Park. Visitors can also fly in through the grass surfaced landing strip, for lighter aircraft.

Lilongwe Wildlife Reserve Not many capital cities can boast such stunning habitat right at their heart and this 180 hectare reserve is undoubtedly a must-see for all visitors passing through. The sprawling acacia combretum woodlands are the last example in the Central Region, and they are home to a wide variety of wildlife from antelopes, wild pigs and hyena to over 200 species of bird. The reserve is cut in half by Kenyatta Road, on one side of which is Lilongwe Nature Sanctuary, where guided walks and fantastic early morning birding are on offer. On the other you will find Lilongwe Wildlife Centre, an internationally accredited sanctuary home to around 200 rescued wild animals. Guided sanctuary tours are available every hour from 8am to 5pm, or you can take yourself along the 4km or so of walking trails that wind alongside the river before stopping off at their new café for lunch.

Kuti Wildlife Reserve Kuti Wildlife Reserve is a stunning 2000 hectare reserve located close to Salima, less than 1,5hrs from Lilongwe and half an hour from the lake.

Set up as a wildlife reserve in 2005, Kuti aims to protect the habitats and wildlife within the reserve.

The reserve is a haven to a huge variety of freeroaming wildlife, with large mammals such as giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, sable, kudu and impala through to primates, reptiles and hundreds of bird species. There are no large predators or dangerous game in Kuti, so you can explore and take in your surroundings at your own pace on foot or by bike, without the need for a vehicle or scout.

The largest of the cichlids in Lake Malawi are the Tsungwa found in the more sheltered rocky or weed lined shoreline, but have of late, declined in numbers.

Big Blues, a mix of several species are also targeted by deep water jigging, but are not easily caught. They are usually found inshore around islands and the rocks at Makanjira and Mbenji.

Migratory fish such as Mpasa and Sanjika are usually caught when rivers are in flood, but numbers have declined.

The most famous Lake Malawi Chambo are plankton feeders and although rarely hooked, they will ‘attack’ a passing lure especially at the beginning of their breeding season when they are establishing their nests.

Catfish in Lake Malawi, such as Kampango can reach 50kg, and are generally caught on bait fishing in deep water off Zimbawe Rock, Chinyankwazi and Chinyamwezi at night.

River Fishing in Malawi River fishing in Malawi is generally done with bait and occasionally with artlure, the later mostly for the African Tiger Fish which can be caught on spinning lures or bait, mostly in the Shire River below Kapachira falls.

he ‘Valley’ lies at the bottom end of the Great Rift Valley, the continental fault that runs from the Red Sea all the way down the length of East Africa.

As the Rift reaches Zambia, it divides; one arm to the east to form Lake Malawi and the western arm becomes the Luangwa Valley. It stretchesjust over seven hundred kilometresby one hundred kilometres wide.

The Luangwa Riverrises in the highlands

of north-east Zambia , near the border with Tanzania and Malawi, flows down the centre of the the Valley floor which is about a thousand meters lower than the surrounding plateau. This is also fed by dozens of seasonal rivers that flow during the rains, creating ‘ox bow’ lagoonsand nutrient rich plains [dambo’s]. These areas are very important to the ecology of the park and sustain the incredible wildlife population that Luangwa is famous for.

Cont. from pg 103 Protection in the area began in the late 19th century when a total ban on the hunting of hippo and elephant was imposed due to massive exploitation by the a tribe from Mozambique and the Arab traders from Malawi. The elephants recovered and the first game reserve was established in the Luamfwa region in 1904, but only lasted to 1911 – It was however instrumental in protecting the last remaining species of the endemic Thornicroft’s Giraffe. A survey was completed in 1932 recommending the proclamation of game reserves and the appointment of an elephant control department.

The North and South Parks and Luambe were proclaimed in 1938 and two pioneers, Norman Carr and Bert Schultz were appointed as game rangers. Villages within the reserves were moved to the periphery and in 1951 Carr persuaded one of the local Chiefs to set aside a

portion of his tribal land and a safari camp was built there with some of the proceeds going back to the community.

Later, a pontoon was erected across the Luangwa River and a few other camps were established. In 1973 the elephant population was estimated to be 100 000 and were causing a major problem on the surrounding areas, but poaching was rampant too and numbers of elephant and the endangered rhino, began to decline steadily.As the years went by, local &international support was obtained, protection efforts increased, policies, laws and departments were implemented, all weather roads were installed and other safari companies started to emerge.

There are 2 endemic species found in the valley – Thornicroft’s Giraffe and Cookson’s wildebeest.

Cont. from pg 105 Unusually, no giraffe are found in the North park and the wildebeest are more prolific in the North Park – so good reasons to visit both !.The river itself is home to large populations of crocodiles and the world’s largest concentration of hippos lives in the Luangwa Valley.

The vegetation through these 2 areas range from mopane woodland to riverine forest, open grasslands , dambo’s and acacia thickets. Trees include the beautiful sausage tree, vegetable ivory palms, red mahogany and leadwoods, diverse enough to sustain the variety of animals that depend on them.

The more commercial South Park [SLNP], about the size of Wales [9050 square KM’s], is better known, and remains one of Africa’s prime wildlife reserves, hosting concentrations and varieties of game and birdlife that make it justifiably popular.

There are about 25 operators in the valley, spread out along 150 kilometers of the Luangwa River. Over ½ of the 30 camps and lodges are seasonal – [only open between June and October] and range from budget camps to sophisticated lodges. The guides in South Luangwa have a deserved reputation as being some of the best in the business – their passion, knowledge and enthusiasm is contagious and a game drive becomes a journey of discovery and admiration.

Couple this with simple, and safari enriching options like game walks, night drives, bush breakfasts, coffee stops and stunning sundowners and you have all the elements needed to give you a thorough safari experience.

Access to the south Park is via the international airport in Mfuwe [ ½ drive from the park gates] or there is a super new tar road, coming in from the east - from Chipata, to Mfuwe – driving time

from Chipata is now a comfortable and easy 2 hrs. With the ease of access, the numerous lodging options, there is no reason you should miss it if you are in the area.

The North Park,made famous by two scientists, Mark and Delia Owens[documented in their book ‘Survivors Song / The Eye of the Elephant’], is different and needs planning and advance bookings as there are no permanent camps in this 4636 square km reserve. Access is by charter plane or there is an all weather gravel road coming in from the western escarpment.

To get there from the east is an adventure and only possible between the months of June and October in a high clearance 4X4. The park is not open to ‘day visitors’, and entrance is only granted if you have a reservation in one of the 2 seasonal camps or if you are in transit to exit the park. This park has a limited road network and the walking safari remains the activity of choice.The park is noted for its massive herds of buffalo and large prides of lion and it is not uncommon to witness a kill.

Other common mammals are hyaena, Cookson’s wildebeest, bushbuck, zebra, warthog, baboon, vervet monkey, puku and impala. Elephant and leopard are also seen, but not as frequently as in the South Park, but you are more likely to see hartebeest, reedbuck and eland. All the birds in the South have been recorded here and sighted regularly are the crowned cranes, purple crested loeries, broad billed roller, Lilian’s lovebird, carmine bee-eater, giant eagle owl and Pel’s fishing owl. Occasionally seen are the bathawk, black coucal and osprey.

The attraction of visiting this park is to experience raw, wild, untouched Africa and needs to be tempered, however as the animals are also wilder, not used to humans and can be temperamental.

There are very few roads and you are unlikely to see anyone else for the duration of your trip. For the camper, 2 sites cater for your needs, one at the western entrance and one at the eastern entrance of the park. Sites cannot be booked in advance , but staff are on standby and will welcome you with a smile and a fire to heat your water for a shower.

Luangwa valley is growing in stature and popularity and as time progresses the balance between commercialization and environmental protection must be met – but it is evident that as more commercial photographic safari camps

emerge, the direct benefit is that the animals are better protected and cared for. It also enables organisations like the indispensable South Luangwa Conservation Organisation [SLC] to grow and to be more effective.

There are challenges, one being the value and benefit of controversial hunting safaris. It is now been proved without doubt that a living animal generates more revenue in tourist dollars than a dead one, so negating the age old claim from the hunters that they generate more dollars to support conservation efforts.

Enjoying wildlife and natural habitats is no more the luxury of a titled few, but is now available for all of us to enjoy and appreciate. Luangwa Valley remains one of Africa’s best protected areas and with support, it has an optimistic future.
