hank you for picking up the winter issue of Bluffton & Lowcountry Restaurants, the most comprehensive source of restaurant information for Bluffton, Hilton Head Island and the surrounding area. Our local scene serves up flavors for every taste — high-end, local dives and everything in between. Bluffton is quickly growing into a culinary destination, a smaller version of neighboring Hilton Head Island. Steaks? Barbecue? Cutting edge? Affordable? We’ve got all that. Seafood? You won’t find any better (living next to the Atlantic Ocean has some major advantages). With so many options, the tough part is finding your perfect table. That’s where this guide comes in. Unlike popular national travel sites that post outdated or sometimes just incorrect information, our publication is current and based right here in the Lowcountry. You won’t find any deceptive reviews, secretly written by the owner, their spouse or their extended family and friends. Bluffton & Lowcountry Restaurants serves as the ultimate guide for local eating. Inside you will find several menus along with other useful information, such as fun things to do in Bluffton and the surrounding area. The most useful new tool may be the Table of Contents, which has been moved to the front of the guide. Restaurants are listed alphabetically with their phone number and type of cuisine they serve along with page locations for their menu, description and location on our new and improved map. You can also use the color-coded grid to see which establishments offer delivery, outdoor dining, a kids menu, take-out, Sunday brunch and more. You can find nearby Hilton Head Island listings near the middle of the guide. Longtime readers will notice several other improvements made this issue. We appreciate readers’ comments and suggestions that will help make our next issue even better. Please e-mail your feedback to the address below. Also, be sure to check out our new website (www. forkandfun.com), follow us on Twitter (@ForkandFun) and like us on Facebook (hhirestaurants). We hope you enjoy Bluffton & Lowcountry Restaurants. Our world of food is just waiting to be discovered.

Get Busy Bluffton offers much more than just good places to eat. In fact, some of the area’s best attractions can be found right here on the mainland. Here is a list of our favorite things to do in Bluffton: Explore the May River Whether it’s kayaking, sailing, shark fishing or just relaxing on the bank, the May River is overflowing with fun things to do. Go on a dolphin excursion or book a shrimp trolling adventure. Access the river via the Alljoy Boat Landing, located at the end of County Road 13.

Shop ‘til you drop The people of Savannah, Ga., have two giant malls and countless other shopping options in their own city, yet many choose to shop here on weekends. New Bluffton has many popular shopping centers along U.S. 278 while Old Bluffton has numerous one-of-a-kind type of places.

Find the sandbar Looking for the hottest spot in Bluffton? For more than 50 years, it has been the May River Sandbar. The pristine island made of sand surfaces at low tide. It used to be a locals-only type of hangout but word has spread. “Redneck Riviera” is the place to be. Launch from the landing at the Bluffton Oyster Factory.

Tour Rose Hill Mansion Take a walk through one of the most beautiful plantation houses in the Lowcountry. Originally built in the late 1850s, the Rose Hill Mansion is full of period furniture and memorabilia from original owner James Brown Kirk. The cost is $25 and reservations are required. Tours are at 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Call 843-757-6046 for more information.

Get in 18 holes Bluffton is home to some of the top public and private golf courses on the East Coast. Play Arnold Palmer’s Crescent Pointe or Davis Love III’s Eagle’s Pointe. Other Bluffton favorites are Hilton Head National, Pinecrest, Old Carolina, Old South, Hilton Head Lakes and Rose Hill.

www.forkandfun.com

Tour Palmetto Bluff Load up the bikes, grab some bottled water and head over to Palmetto Bluff. Spend the afternoon getting lost, un-lost and then lost again. Scenery so beautiful you’ll totally forget you’re exercising.

ow much to tip at a restaurant depends on the class of the restaurant, your server, the size of your party, and the quality of the service. Different cultures have different expectations, so exact percentages vary depending on where you are in the world. Generally, however, tips range from 10 percent to 20 percent of the meal’s cost, before tax.

Common Tipping Practices In Bluffton, the class of the restaurant — and even where you sit — has an effect on the tip. Besides the usual fine dining, patrons can enjoy buffets and cafés, as well as eat at a counter or bar. Generally, whenever a waiter serves your food, some amount of tip is necessary. When eating at a restaurant or café, a tip of 15 percent is common. At a bar or at the counter, service isn’t considered a big part of the meal so 10 percent to 12 percent is usually adequate. Large parties of seven people or more should expect to pay at least 20 percent, and this gratuity may be automatically included in your bill. Tipping for a buffet can be more complex. At a fastfood buffet, tipping is unnecessary. If a waiter serves drinks, however, it is fine to tip a small amount. At highend buffets, a tip of 15 percent to 20 percent is common, and this may be automatically included on your bill.

he 2013 Hilton Head Island Wine & Food Festival, presented by The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa, is gearing up for the 28th Annual event, which will be held March 4-9, 2013. The pre-festival events taking place in January are “Uncork” the festival on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013 from 6-8 p.m., (previously scheduled for Jan. 25, 2013). Uncork the Festival will be held at The Beach House by Holiday Inn on Hilton Head Island. It is fashioned after another popular wine special event founded by the Wall Street Journal, Tastings wine columnists called Open That Bottle Night. Most of us have a bottle of wine hidden away or specific vintage that we’re saving for a special occasion – but it never seems to come. Uncork is the perfect venue to share that bottle with some old friends, and make some new friends that know and enjoy wine. The 2013 Uncork party will also include a lively Grape Stomping Competition, with an “I Love Lucy” look-alike contest. There is limited ticket availability for the uncork event and attendees are asked to bring their own special bottle(s) of wine to taste and share with friends and other attendees. In addition, an attendee will receive a souvenir glass, select vineyard wine tasting and delectable hors d’oeuvres. Tickets for Uncork the Festival are $35 and are available at www.hiltonheadwine and food.com. Uncork is a great chance to discuss wine with experts from around the country. The Hilton Head Island Wine & Food Festival International Wine Judging & Competition takes place on Jan. 26 and 27, 2013 at The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa. The judges, including two master sommeliers, will be on-hand at uncork to discuss the fine art of palate cultivation and wine tasting. The weekend competition is closed to the public, so uncork is the only opportunity to rub elbows with the judges. The Hilton Head Island Wine & Food Festival in a nonprofit 501(c)3, with proceeds from its silent auctions benefiting educational opportunities for students in the hospitality management programs of study at the University of South Carolina Beaufort and the Technical College of the Lowcountry through the John F. and Valerie Curry scholarship fund.

Thanks to the droves of visitors that come during vacation season, Bluffton and nearby Hilton Head Island have more than 300 restaurants to choose from. Here is the skinny on recently opened establishments. Annie O’s Southern Eats

Longtime island resident and chef Tom Egerton has opened his first restaurant, Annie-O’s Southern Eats. After 10 years with Crane’s Tavern and most recently Muse restaurant in Charleston, Tom has returned to the island and opened his southern-style eatery, featuring his take on southern classics and comfort foods like meatloaf and gravy, buttermilk fried chicken, and new takes on shrimp salad and eggrolls, along with family favorites like Susie’s Potatoes. Other favorites are the chicken biscuit, fried catfish, crab cake club, spinach salad, burger and wings. All desserts are homemade and include treats like coconut cream pie to round out the deliciousness. The down-home decor here includes galvanized buckets turned into light fixtures, a curved wooden bar that invites customers to get comfortable, and cloth-covered tables that extend a hospitable southern welcome to diners. The restaurant is named after Tom’s mother, Anne. He thought it fitting to recognize the person responsible for sparking his interest in cooking through her formidable talents in the kitchen. Annie-O’s features all homemade, from-scratch dishes in a casual setting that will leave you satisfied and won’t break the bank. It offers a kids menu, dine-in and take-out options, and also has a full bar. Annie-O’s is open Monday-Saturday, serving continuously from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. It is located in Chase Center on the corner of Target and Arrow roads. For more information, call 843-341-2664.

Big Jim’s BBQ, Burgers & Pizza

Big Jim’s BBQ, Burgers & Pizza, the newest restaurant at Palmetto Dunes Resort is named in honor of Big Jim Self. Big Jim’s offers up signature Southern dishes including slow-cooked barbecue and brisket, a variety of gourmet burgers and grilled pizzas plus homemade soups, salads, seafood, steaks and fall-off-the-bone ribs. Self, one of the founding fathers of Palmetto Dunes, was a big thinker with big dreams. He also had some bigtime culinary skills. From his own special barbecue sauce to his renowned Tennessee coleslaw, Big Jim’s recipes were always in demand among family and friends and now the same traditional recipes are offered at Big Jim’s restaurant. With great food, great drinks, great fun and great stories, you can expect nothing less at the restaurant named in his honor. Big Jim’s is located at 7 Trent Jones Lane, inside the Robert Trent Jones Clubhouse. Open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Classic breakfast menu served 7-10 a.m. Happy hour is 4-7 p.m. daily. Live entertainment is offered seasonally with daily specials that include Martini Mondays and Prime Rib Wednesdays from 5-9 p.m. Big screen TVs and outdoor seating overlooking the Jones golf course make Big Jim’s the perfect spot to watch sports. Take-out and catering are also available. Call 843-785-1165 or visit www.palmettodunes.com/ big-jims for more information.

Bullies BBQ

The best barbecue restaurant in Medina, Ohio, has opened a second location on Hilton Head Island. Bullies BBQ owners Tammy and Bob Sutton are confident their award-winning smoked ribs, pulled pork, pulled chicken and brisket will eventually be just as famous here as they are back in the Snowbelt. “We’ve only got five items on the menu and they’re all great,” said Bob Sutton, who cooks all the food himself. “We’re giving a different-sized portion than what people are used to down here; a healthy portion for a reasonable price.” A pulled pork or a pulled chicken sandwich will set you back $5.50. The brisket sandwich costs an extra quarter. Bullies

30

also offers jumbo sandwiches and dinner plates with french fries, cole slaw and jalapeño cheddar cornbread. Other sides include mac and cheese, Carolina cole slaw and kickin collards. Items are slow-smoked over hickory and mesquite woods on the Suttons’ jumbo-sized smoker and can be topped off with one of four original sauces. Sutton also sells his Memphis-style rub, which took more than 20 years to perfect. The rub and all the sauces can be purchased separately for $5.99. Counter service ensures a much quicker dining experience than the other sit-down barbecue restaurants on the island. You can find Bullies BBQ at 3 Regency Parkway on Hilton Head Island, next to the Red Roof Inn. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 9 p.m. on Sunday. For more information, call 843-686-7427 or go online to www.bulliesbbq.com.

Fiddlehead Pizza

Th ink global, eat local. Fiddlehead Pizza is the only pizza restaurant in Beaufort County that is “Certified South Carolina – Fresh on the Menu,” meaning it uses at least 25 percent of local products or ingredients. Owners Stacey and Darren Macioszek say they are close to 45 percent. Th e décor of the restaurant is from here as well, painted and designed by local artists. About the only thing that isn’t true to South Carolina is the unique crust, which originated in Naples, Italy. With a blend of two diff erent yeasts and microfl ora, it has a bubbly look, a slightly tangy fl avor and can be covered with red or white sauces. With six cold taps, Fiddlehead Pizza offers an ever-changing selection of draught beer, many from South Carolina breweries. Th e restaurant has also quickly developed into a hotspot for live music, starting at 8 p.m. each Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Th e party continues until the last customer leaves. Kitchen hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Th ursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday. Th e restaurant’s name was inspired by the edible sprout that comes from the fi ddlehead fern. It opened in March and has already developed a strong following of repeat customers. “Th e reaction has been hugely positive,” Darren Macioszek said. “I get it from both customers and purveyors. Everybody that talks about our place is raving about it. I think our product definitely speaks for itself.” For more information, call 843-757-6466 or go online to www.fiddleheadpizza.com.

Gillan’s Fresh Seafood & Oyster Bar

For a one-of-a-kind seafood extravaganza that is about as local as you can get, head to Gillan’s Fresh Seafood & Oyster Bar in South Island Square, in the old LongHorn SteakFresh Seafood & Oyster Bar house location. Dining at Gillan’s is a unique “Family Friendly, Price Friendly!” experience. Here, you get to watch as the chefs shuck oysters and clams and crack stone crabs for you behind the bar. Gillan’s is owned by brothers and longtime locals Joe and Ned Gilleland, who previously owned the well-known restaurants Eugene’s and Charleston’s, and whose father developed South Beach Marina. Th ese guys know Lowcountry seafood, and they showcase it well at Gillan’s. The restaurant gets deliveries of fresh local seafood daily, and if you have a fresh catch of your own, bring it on in, and they’ll cook it up for you. In addition to serving up the local fare, favorites from afar include Maine lobsters and Ipswich clams. Enjoy all this against the beautiful local backdrop; the restaurant has added a brand new deck seating 50 people. If you love crabs, this is the place to go. Gillan’s has blue crabs, Alaskan king crab legs, snow crabs and Florida stone crab claws. Landlubbers can feast on steaks, chicken and other non-seafood fare. OKKO’s upscale atmosphere echoes the beauty of Japanese simplicity and balance, with sleek glass, beautiful woods, and a mix of subtle warm and cool hues throughout. Speaking of warm: Fire is a masterful, if fleeting, centerpiece at the six hibachi tables. The hibachi area is enclosed by glass doors so that guests in the main dining area can enjoy the sights without having the pleasing-yet-powerful scents and sounds interrupt their own culinary experiences. The restaurant also features outdoor seating, a stylish bar and lounge area that accommodates 30 people, and two private rooms. One of the private rooms accommodates eight people, and the other, 14. Large groups are welcome and are encouraged to call ahead. OKKO is one of the only hibachi restaurants on the island, and is open for lunch as well as dinner. Lunch specials are available daily from 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m., and early birds enjoy a 15 percent discount from 4:30-6 p.m. daily. Happy hour is 4-7 p.m., with 30 percent off house and well wine. Dinner begins at 4 p.m., and after 10 p.m., the restaurant serves a late-night menu of small portions. The kitchen closes at 11:30 p.m. The bar is open to midnight on the weekends. OKKO is located at 95 Mathews Dr. Call 843-341-3377 for more information.

Ombra Cucina Rustica

A new upscale Italian restaurant has opened in the Village at Wexford. Longtime local Italian chef Michael Cirafesi has branched out with distinguished Philadelphia chef Nunzio Patruno to open Ombra Cucina Rustica. “All executive chefs want to eventually open their own restaurant,” Cirafesi said. “We all have that dream. We follow the rules of classic Italian cuisine. We will be set apart by our standards and who we are.” Cirafesi started cooking in 1987 under Patruno, who was considered one of the top Italian chefs in the country. The two have completely remodeled the building where Antonio’s was located, creating an environment similar to a rustic Tuscan farmhouse. The word ombra is Venetian for a small glass of wine. Cucina rustica means rustic cuisine. As the name implies, Ombra Cucina Rustica offers an extensive Italian wine list and serves cuisine from the Old World using innovative cooking techniques. Chef Cirafesi makes all his own desserts, pastries and pastas. All fish come from either the Mediterranean or the Adriatic. The restaurant also features a Venetian style bar and lounge. Ombra Cucina Rustica opens at 5 p.m. each day and closes after the last patron leaves. Reservations are recommended but walk-ins are welcome. For more information, call 843-842-5505.
