We go the extra mile to find the right rams for your business and this is how. We “In Flock” performance test all our rams with real data, not just relying on Lambplan data to assess our rams.
The industry standard is to scan all lambs for fat, muscle and weight once after weaning. At Telpara we scan twice in with a set of very rigid protocols. We have found scanning twice has created a more robust real data set to compare our rams.
METHOD At weaning all rams are weighed and then weights are adjusted for birth type, rear type and age of dam to level up the playing field.
THE GRASS PHASE
All rams are then run strictly on a grass system with only mineral supplementation for between 105-120 days, allowing for enough time to “wash out” any maternal influence. At the end of this phase all rams are weighed and scanned for fat and muscle to compare “Grass Gain” and carcase value across the group. The rams are then ranked and ratioed according to how they compared to the group average. From here we determine which rams are our preferred rams for clients looking to finish lambs off grass-based systems.
At the completion of the Grass Phase all rams enter the gain test which is our Grain Assisted Phase. NO RAMS ARE CULLED UNTIL THE COMPLETION OF THE GAIN TEST Rams are fed for 70 days to reflect conditions that reflect a feedlot environment. After day 70 all rams are weighed and scanned for fat and muscle for a second time. The rams are then re- ranked and ratioed according to how they compared to the group average under more intensive feeding conditions. From here we determine which rams are our preferred rams for clients looking to finish lambs on grain
Ultimately what we find is some rams are exceptional on grass, some rams are exceptional performers on grain and an elite few are exceptional at both. Without a rigorous, standardised method of performance testing our rams including scanning twice and gain testing, we really wouldn’t know how our rams best fit into the industry.
“Runnerup
As we always say “The Telpara Type” is the type to perform and the type we breed. Our rams are presented “young & fit” not fat!
We performance test all our rams, not just on paper but out in the paddock. This year we scanned all rams straight off grass, then put them on a “Gain Test” based on a grain assisted feeding program and scanned them all again to assess their performance at the conclusion of the test.
What did we find? A lot of information. We have now identified our rams we think are best suited to grass finishing operations, our rams that are best suits to grain finishing operations and those rams that can do both. We only offer the top 60 rams in our sale, these are our top performers and each ram will be presented with both their Lambplan data as well as the In flock “GainTest” data to make it even easier for you to pick rams best suited for your business. We run all our ewe lambs together, so the keeper and the sale ewes are run as one They are not pampered, they are not fed up for sale day, but they are bred to be productive. Don’t expect fat sale ewes, that’s not our business. We treat all the ewes the same, we believe this management approach with our ewe lambs ultimately pays off once they hit the breeding flock. This year 76% of our ewe flock had either twins, triplets and even quads! Only 24% singles, that’s the job we want from our ewes.
We look forward to seeing you at our sale, and if you can’t make it, we can always make time for an inspection prior to sale day or hop online through Stocklive to attend the sale.

ASBVs allow you to compare the genetic differences between sheep. They are a calculated prediction of an animals genetic merit for a particular trait. ASBVs are an indication of how an animals progeny will perform based on the genes they pass on.
Estimates the genetic difference between animals in weight at birth
Estimates the genetic difference between animals in live-weight at 100 days of age The higher the better.
Lower or more negative Shear Force (SF5) values are favourable.SF5 & IMF has been shown to have a significant impact on the flavour, juiciness, tenderness and overall likeability of lamb
PWWT- Post Weaning Weight
Estimates the genetic difference between animals in live-weight at 225 days of age. The higher the better
PEMD- Post Weaning Eye Muscle Depth
Estimates the genetic difference in eye muscle depth at the C site in a 45kg live-weight animal The higher the better.
Higher or more positive Intramuscular Fat (IMF) breeding values are favourable. SF5 & IMF has been shown to have a significant impact on the flavour, juiciness, tenderness and overall likeability of lamb
Estimates the genetic difference in GR fat depth at 45kg liveweight Desired level depends on breeding aims. Should not be extreme either way.
The TCP index has been created to assist producers to achieve both gains in their major production traits, such as post-weaning weight and muscling, as well as ensuring consumer satisfaction from lamb is maintained through focusing on key eating quality traits such as shear force (tenderness) and intramuscular fat (marbling). The higher the better.
