On February 15th, Hillsdale Mock Trial faced off against Menlo School in a battle of wits at the Redwood City Courthouse. In mock trial, two teams compete against each other by putting on an elaborate court case. This year’s case, People v. Davidson, is a fictional murder trial, determining whether the defendant Casey Davidson had killed his political rival, Alex Thompson. Students take on the roles of attorneys, witnesses, and more to persuade the judge to rule in their favor. Last year, Hillsdale Mock Trial was prepared for competition as usual but were cut off before even reaching the county semifinals. Eager for revenge, they stormed into competition this year, consistently placing higher in scores than all other schools in the county except for Menlo. The winner of San Mateo County would be decided in the final match between Hillsdale and Menlo. Both teams had been preparing for this moment for months in advance with hundreds of hours of preparation. Menlo and Hillsdale have had a long lasting rivalry for many years, constantly competing against each other in county finals. The trial between Menlo and

Hillsdale was intense. Objections flew out from attorneys, stories were told by witnesses, and arguments were made between both sides. With a real district judge presiding over the trial, the students within the courtroom were nervous but determined. Senior and captain Sabrina Klindworth says, “Going into the courtroom almost feels like going into battle. All you feel are nerves and you need to be focused, primed, and ready to go. Confidence is key.”

After receiving feedback on how they performed, Menlo and

Hillsdale separated into different courtrooms, nervously chatting with each other. Within the next thirty minutes, they would receive the real verdict they were waiting for: Who would be the San Mateo County champion? In Hillsdale Mock Trial, there are only two seniors, C.J. Gingold and Sabrina Klindworth. With fear, excitement, anxiety, and hope, they awaited the prolongment of their mock trial career or its end. It was nerve-racking. Mr. Springman, Hillsdale Mock Trial’s teacher advisor, delivered the news. Although the score was close, it was decisive. Menlo School had prevailed over Hillsdale. A mixture of shock and disappointment swept throughout the room. The mood dampened, and tears began to fall. Sabrina Klindworth notes, “The amount of support I got after we lost finals meant the world to me. I will never forget that the majority of the team came up to me and comforted me when I was crying.” Even though they suffered a great loss, Hillsdale’s Mock Trial team will bounce back. Soon, they will begin to prepare for next year’s trial and plan on entering the Golden State Mock Trial Tournament, an invitational competition. For anyone interested in entering the courtroom, feel free to ask Mr. Springman for more information. Hillsdale Mock Trial will always be ready and on the case.
