Movie Night Moves Students Eilleen Zhang Editor-in-Chief On January 19th, the Hillsdale Effect and Girl Up club teamed to host their second ever movie night at Hillsdale, showing He Named Me Malala. Students were encouraged to go to this educational event, and there were extra credit offerings from select history teachers. The event was free, with all profits from concessions going towards fundraisers for both clubs. With the power of Malala’s inspirational survival story and her actions afterwards, students learned the importance of education, women’s rights, and standing up for what you believe in. Malala Yousafzai became known worldwide in 2013, after she was shot on a bus by the Taliban, a terrorist group, at age fifteen for going to school. But her fight for girls’ education began years before that, at age eleven, when she wrote a diary to BBC’s Urdu service on life under Taliban rule. The movie seamlessly flows between flashbacks of Malala’s experience, explanations of conditions for girls’ education, and clips of Malala adjusting to her new life in Britain. As the title demonstrates, the movie also delves into how her father, a schoolteacher and speaker, influenced Malala as a child to value education and pursue knowledge above all else, as well as the culture that Malala grew up with. Throughout

it all, Malala’s personality imparts a lighthearted yet passionate feel to the movie, with her humble view of her accomplishments and determined attitude on speaking out for her beliefs.
