EXHIBITION HIGHLIGHTS

Last year our curatorial team programmed new spaces in the museum including the atrium, the “art wall” in the store and the clerestory gallery on the second floor. Drawing upon our new Interpretation Policy, curatorial and education worked together on new ways to engage visitors in creative and critical thinking during their museum visit. The Deep Look exhibition featured a learning lab from which visitors could more deeply experience the artworks and sketch their observations. Vanishing Black Bars & Lounges featured an ambient “bar” in which visitors could sit, socialize and learn more about Artist Kasimu Harris’ influences. Curator Ben Hickey once again achieved a diverse schedule of exhibitions that featured UL, local, national and international artists as well as artists of color, guest curators and works from our collection, and that engaged partners on campus and in the community – all important aspects of our strategic plan.

While our education programs were being delivered virtually at the start of the year in Summer 2021, in-person tours and activities started up again in January 2022. Although the K-12/Campus Coordinator position remained vacant, Educator Olivia Morgan, with support from Graduate Assistant Callie Smith served nearly 4,000 guests through tours, programs, community events and professional development for teachers. Our strong partnership with Acadiana Center for the Arts (ACA) and their PACE teaching artist program helped to sustain our education offerings with a diminished staff and we were able to launch a new program, Let’s Make Art! (a drop-in art activity) on the third Saturday of each month.

The Library pass program provided free admission for 143 visitors.

This year’s exhibition by students in the LPSS talented visual arts program was titled Miniscapes: Where the Land Meets the Mind and drew students with their families to see their work hanging in the museum.

Our Winter Play Day was held in partnership with the Lafayette Parish Magnet Chinese Immersion Program, Mandarin Immersion Ambassadors of Acadiana, Lafayette Public Library and the Lafayette Chinese American Association. The celebration of Chinese culture was held in conjunction with the Master Shen Long exhibition.

And once again in the Spring, we partnered with the Shadows-on-the-Teche Plein Air Competition to host a demonstration by their esteemed juror.

A collaboration with Professor Mark A. Genung and his students in the UL Department of Biology enhanced the Fragile Bee exhibition with a display of actual bee specimens highlighting their opportunistic behavior. And a partnership with Professor Taylor Clement in the UL English Department gave students in her honors technical writing class an opportunity to research and create audio guides to the Deep Look exhibition for the vision-impaired.

UL Moving Image Art students led by Professor Virgile Beddok created short promotional videos of our Spring exhibitions.

Our partnership with the UL Education Department, the National Writing Project and GearUp continued with a poetry workshop facilitated by Dr. Jack Bedell. And we were pleased to partner with Professor Kelly Bixby, and students in the Fringe Music Ensemble who selected and performed in the galleries music inspired by the artworks on view.

PROGRESS ON STRATEGIC PLAN GOALS

In January 2022 at a half-day retreat, museum staff met to assess progress toward our five-year strategic plan goals established in 2019. While changes due to the pandemic have had a major impact, the museum maintains its vision for a renovation of the Town building to create a café and education space. This year, signage improvements have been made to interior and exterior spaces and staff took advantage of diversity and inclusivity training through a community NCBI workshop at the Acadiana Center for the Arts. Our strategic goals remain as follows:

Expand educational impact through interactive opportunities for arts engagement for UL students, K-12 students, and toddlers through seniors in the community.

Enhance the visitor experience with increased amenities including food service, public art, improved signage, and digital and analog tools to guide the art experience.

Continue work on focusing art collection and educating community about the museum’s collection and best practices related to its management.

Develop and implement Revenue Plan for gradually increasing annual budget over the next 5 years in support of expanded facility and operations.

Expand impact of diversity and inclusivity work in our community, promote and support accessibility to the museum and its resources, promote equity in our partnerships.
