Governance

The theme for this year’s Annual Report, Wise Investments, could not be more fitting. Over the 2023–2024 school year, we witnessed remarkable achievements driven by thoughtful decisions that ensure HSC remains a leader in education and community connections.

In this report, you will discover how our investments—whether in people, planet, or community—have contributed to a stronger, more vibrant HSC. We’ve invested in our people, ensuring faculty and staff have access to the latest professional development training and opportunities to advance their qualifications. These efforts continue to strengthen the knowledge and creativity that define our academic programs and guide students to greater achievements.

Our commitment to investing in our planet has been equally steadfast. From sustainability partnerships to energysaving infrastructure projects, we have taken meaningful steps toward reducing our ecological footprint. Our commitment to an increasingly sustainable campus not only carves out a healthier future for students, but creates meaningful learning opportunities in our classrooms today. At the heart of our community are the philanthropic efforts that continue to enrich the lives of those around us. Whether it’s supporting local organizations like St. Matthew's House, or Gore Park Outreach, students, staff and family

Forward with Purpose

demonstrated time and again that giving back is integral to HSC. All the while, generosity from alumni and parent donors continues to fuel the College’s advancement priorities and propels our mission forward as we look ahead to our next capital campaign.

And we cannot forget the contributions of the Parents’ Guild, led by Sadia Ansari, whose fundraising efforts through Gently Used Uniform Sales and Winterfest funded new playground equipment for our youngest learners. Projects like this remind us that every investment, no matter the size, can bring joy to learning across our campus.

I encourage you to explore the pages of this report, which chronicle not just the financial stability of the College, but the values that guide our investments. These are the investments that allow us to grow, nurture, and inspire the next generation of learners, leaders, and changemakers.

Thank you for your continued support and dedication to our great College.

HSC’s 2023–2024 academic year marked the 30th anniversary of my graduation as a student at the College. To now serve as the Chair of HSC’s Board of Governors is both an honour and a privilege—a role that affords me great insight into the governance of this remarkable institution.

Our mission as members of the Board is to guide the College in achieving its vision for the future. We focus on strategic priorities, financial sustainability, and fostering a community that values inclusivity, innovation, and excellence all with the goal of ensuring the College will continue to be a leader in independent education.

HSC’s emphasis on personalized learning is a powerful example of the integration of the College vision with its’ strategic initiatives. It’s a model that encourages students to take an active role in their own education, steering the course of their learning journey. This studentled approach reflects how HSC, as an institution, evolves. When students are empowered to impact their education, we continue to be impressed with the energy, curiosity and ambition they demonstrate to shape the College. Just as students are empowered to shape their future, we as a Board are committed to ensuring the College adapts and innovates to meet the needs of its learners—now and in the years ahead.

Smart investments continue to drive HSC forward. Whether through innovative

Investing in Impact

curriculum enhancements, the expansion of our facilities, or the integration of sustainable technologies, these strategic decisions are positioning HSC to thrive well into the future. Specifically, we are excited about the progress being made on the implementation of the campus master plan that will shape a new learning environment for our Middle School students.

Our faculty and staff are at the heart of delivering a top-tier education and we remain focused on supporting them so that together, we can continue to enrich the student experience and strengthen HSC’s standing as a model of educational excellence.

I have experienced firsthand the transformative impact of an HSC education. The values and opportunities that shaped my journey are still very much alive in the College today and I hope, like me, you feel pride and excitement for what lies ahead after reading this report.

As I reflect on another vibrant year at HSC, I’m filled with pride in our alumni who bring the spirit of the College to life with their stories and accomplishments. Each chapter they add enriches our shared journey, making my role as Alumni Relations Officer truly rewarding. Working alongside our Alumni Executive and leadership team, we’re dedicated to building a stronger, connected community—one that’s both innovative and deeply rooted in tradition.

Our alumni network is more than just connections; it’s a lifelong community. This year, we celebrated that community with new events and beloved traditions alike. From marking Strathallan School’s 100th Anniversary to the joy of gathering at the Alumni and Community Golf and Hockey Tournaments, reuniting at the Carol Service, and being featured on the jumbotron at our inaugural HSC Day with the Blue Jays, these moments captured what makes HSC so special. Together, they showcased the enduring bond that HSC alumni share, no matter where life takes them.

In our mission to keep alumni connected, we launched a bi-monthly Alumni E-Newsletter that highlights upcoming events, speaker series, volunteer opportunities, and alumni achievements. Coupled with our growing social media presence, this lets alumni stay close to HSC from anywhere in the world.

'03

A Community Connected

This year, we also introduced the Alumni Speaker Series, which has already bridged the gap between alumni and current students, offering our students inspiring insights and alumni a platform to share their journeys. Initiatives like this, alongside support from our alumni committee members, provide meaningful ways to stay engaged and contribute to HSC’s future.

Looking ahead, I am wholeheartedly committed to strengthening the bonds within our alumni family. We want every student who passed through these halls to feel valued, connected, and celebrated for their ongoing impact on HSC. Together, we are building a future that honours HSC’s legacy while inspiring the next wave of alumni to stay connected, share their adventures, and celebrate the remarkable school we all proudly call home.

It was an incredible year for the Parents' Guild, and I am honored to have served as its Chair alongside a remarkable group of parents. Our ongoing commitment to nurturing a spirit of friendship and community, while supporting the fundraising efforts of the College, led to tangible enhancements to the learning environment—none of which would have been possible without the collaboration and support of so many across HSC.

From the guidance of HSC’s Board of Governors, who continually champion the mission of the Parents' Guild, to the handson help from our incredible maintenance team, who time and again ensured every event was flawlessly set up, our success is shared by many. Faculty members showed their support by attending school-specific Mix and Mingle events, which, along with the introduction of informal weekday hikes, built relationships that are at the heart of our collective success.

Winterfest and our Gently Used Uniform sales, were shining examples of what we can accomplish together. The energy and generosity from all corners of the HSC community allowed the Parents' Guild to make a lasting investment in the school’s future: a new playground for our Early Education students. This playground is not just a space for play; it is an investment in the joy, creativity, and development of

Fostering Connections

our youngest learners, made possible by a community working together.

Special acknowledgment must also go to the Leadership Team and the Advancement Office, whose tireless efforts have connected our work to broader opportunities that enrich the school. Whether it’s ensuring our fundraising initiatives align with HSC’s mission or promoting the projects that matter most, their dedication amplifies the impact of everything we do.

I want to extend my deepest gratitude to our dedicated volunteers, faculty, staff, and the broader HSC community for your continued support. Together, we are making meaningful contributions that will benefit our students for years to come.

Professional development for HSC’s faculty and staff reinforces our ability to deliver a curriculum that engages, challenges and excites student learning. Over 50 per cent of our teaching and administrative teams hold advanced degrees, reflecting the high standard of expertise across the College.

In 2023–2024, HSC made significant investments in professional development through initiatives led by the Academic Innovation and Instructional Team (AIIT). This team fosters academic excellence by empowering faculty to experiment with and adopt innovative teaching practices that enhance student learning. Faculty participated in Critical Friends Group (CFG) training through the National School Reform Faculty (NSRF), which promotes collaboration and continuous improvement in teaching practices. Additionally, professional development efforts included Links 2 Learning curriculum refinement sessions, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) workshops, and participation in the NAIS People of Colour Conference. HSC also joined the Independent Schools Experiential Educators Network (ISEEN), furthering our commitment to experiential education. Faculty book clubs focused on topics such as resilience, wellbeing, and innovative teaching strategies, reflecting our holistic approach to professional growth. Philathropy at HSC

Bound by a passion for exceptional education, HSC’s donor community proved once again the power of giving.

From scholarship funds to event sponsorships, donations big and small throughout the year made a lasting impact on student learning and gave renewed confidence for enhancing our campus over the next two decades. As we embark on HSC’s 125 Campaign, we are backed by an engaged and committed community of volunteers, advisors and donors who bring expertise and energy to all fundraising initiatives. As you will see in the pages that follow, the unwavering generosity of HSC donors continues to transform our aspirations into tangible realities.

Fundraising: By the Numbers

Counting Contributions

Donor counts shown are limited to true philanthropic donations. These are transactions for which a donor, in exchange for providing the College with a sum of money, was provided a tax receipt.

Many parents, alumni, and friends supported the College through events and sponsorships, though they are not included in the donor count.

Current parents have shown to be extremely engaged in the life of the College, with the Parents’ Guild’s activities on the rise, contributing positively to participation. We have seen current parent donations account for 38 per cent of all donations in ‘23’24, up from 23 per cent in ‘20-’21.

On the alumni side, efforts continue to offer grads meaningful and accessible ways to engage with the College and one another.

Average Gifts and Revenue Per Donor

(pledges and one-time gifts)

Average Gift

Although each donor contributes $6,593 on average, they do so in smaller transactions ($1,560 on average this year). Many opt for automatic monthly donations which evenly distributes their donations over the course of twelve months and ensures their continued support of HSC.

86% Increase in Revenue Per Donor

Revenue per Donor

This is a testament that donors believe in the HSC mission and are directing a greater portion of their philanthropic dollars to the College. Growth over the last four years went from $2,954 to $5,481 in ’23-’24.

Capital Fund Projects

Thanks to the support of generous donors and investment from the College, we were able to implement a necessary upgrade of the sound reinforcement system in the Virtue- Fitzgerald Centre (VFC) for the Arts. This new system ensures that all students and audience members can hear equally well regardless of their seating selection. It is a notable and measurable improvement when used for various student-centered theatre and music productions that take place throughout the year. The system provides hands-on experiential learning opportunities for students who are more technically focused as they operate the switchboard during various productions while learning how sound flows through the space.

Middle School Fitness Area

Total Dollars

The annual revenue growth observed is, in great part, due to the genuine feeling of community experienced by all constituents and the engagement of parents, alumni, friends, faculty and staff.

The once tired and underutilized Middle School/Page Gym fitness room has been transformed with help from an HSC family. Through combined investment from the College and donor contribution, the remodeled and upgraded facility is enhancing the health and wellbeing of our students and staff. Grade 7 and 8 teachers are using the space as part of the Middle School physical education curriculum and Senior School athletes have begun using the new resources for improved training. Since reopening, the feedback on the revamped space has been overwhelmingly positive with coaches seeing benefits to game play.

Designations

Most donors direct their funds to expendable initiatives where the investment is made in academic programs, student-life, and David Tutty Joy & Innovation Fund projects.

Donations directed to capital and infrastructure are enhancing spaces such as classrooms in the Montessori School, the Middle School fitness area, and new sound equipment in the Virtue-Fitzgerald Centre for the Arts. These upgrades improve the overall student-experience and enhance the HSC education for all students.

Donors supporting the College endowment, which funds student financial aid, directly impact the lives of 40 student recipients every single year, making the HSC experience possible for more students.

Annual Fund Projects

Requests from donors to direct their contributions to classroom improvements saw transformations in both the Middle and Montessori schools. Flexible, innovative and adjustable furniture purchased for the Middle School has given faculty and students the opportunity to customize their learning while new materials and upgraded sustainable furniture in the Montessori classroom has enhanced student experience.

David Tutty Joy & Innovation Fund initiatives supported this year thanks to donors:

School Nutritowers

The Pollinator Paradise

Outside classroom in the Peace Garden

House Garden/learning space

Raised Garden Bed Renewal and Heaven/Young Quad Learning Landscape Completion

Middle School Historic Huron Basket Weaving Session with Indigenous educators

HSC Learning Landscape StoryWalk (™) Project

*The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library in Montpelier Vermont. Storywalk® is a registered service mark owned by the Kellogg-Hubbard Library.”

Endowment Fund

A gift to the College’s endowment fund is an investment in the long-term financial health and wellbeing of HSC. As the endowment grows, so does the annual return which is used to support academic programs, scholarships, bursaries and awards, and long-term capital projects.

Thanks to those who gave to HSC’s Endowment Fund, over 40 students received financial aid in the form of scholarships, bursaries, and awards in the 2023–2024 year.

These awards are used to recruit, retain and reward outstanding learners for their contributions to academic excellence as well as student life.

Junior

Empowering Young Minds: How Philanthropy Transforms Learning at HSC

The transformative power of philanthropy is evident at every turn in our College. The vision and generosity of donors this year brought innovation, adaptability, and meaningful engagement to classrooms across our Middle and Early Education programs. Among the most heartwarming examples of this generosity is the contribution made by HSC’s Parents' Guild (PG), whose yearlong fundraising efforts resulted in a brandnew playground for our Early Education students. The funds raised at PG events like Winterfest and the Gently Used Uniform Sales were record-setting and prove just how transformative many small acts of generosity can be when combined. The new playground is now a vibrant hub for our youngest learners, offering them a safe, fun, and dynamic environment to explore, play, and grow.

Dr. Clifton Farrell ’69, a lifelong supporter of HSC, has also made a profound impact on our Middle School. His generous gift enabled a transformation of Middle School classrooms with VS flexible furniture that is helping redefine the learning environment. No longer bound to traditional desks, students experience a space where collaboration, creativity, and adaptability are at the heart of every lesson. The new adaptable furniture encourages dynamic interaction between students and teachers, nurturing the kind of

agile environment that prepares students to succeed beyond the classroom.

Dr. Farrell’s donation is more than an investment in physical furniture—it’s an investment in the future of learning at HSC. In helping to fund these adaptable spaces, he has given our students the tools to work together, solve problems creatively, and engage more deeply with their learning. His generosity has inspired a more interactive and inclusive classroom culture and contributed to HSC’s strategic goals. Equally vital to HSC’s continued growth are the contributions of W. Bruce Gabel and Jean C. Gabel, longtime members of the HSC community and parents of alumni. The Gabels’ recent donation has allowed the Montessori classrooms to undergo essential upgrades. The new furniture supports the Montessori method, an educational philosophy that emphasizes independence, hands-on learning, and individualized instruction. Thanks to their support, our youngest students have access to a thoughtfully designed environment that aligns perfectly with Montessori principles, giving them the freedom to explore, discover, and learn at their own pace.

The Gabels' commitment to HSC is not new; for years, they have been deeply involved in the life of the school through various advisory and board roles.

Their recent gift is yet another example of their enduring dedication to providing HSC students with the best possible education, starting from the earliest years.

These generous acts—from the collective efforts of the Parents' Guild to the individual gifts of Dr. Farrell and the Gabel family—underscore the critical role that philanthropy plays in shaping the future of HSC. Their contributions have not only enhanced the physical environment of our classrooms and play spaces but have also enriched the educational experiences of our students, setting them up for success well beyond their time at HSC.

As we reflect on the impact of these contributions, we hope others will be inspired to follow their lead. Every gift, no matter the size, helps HSC continue its mission to provide an outstanding education for all students.

Building for the Future: Financial Strength and Community Drive

HSC’s Success

As you’ve read from this report, HSC’s commitment to growth, sustainability, and community engagement has never been stronger. Being the Director of Finance affords me a front row seat to the value that such communal dedication brings to the College. It is with great confidence that I can say 2023–2024 was a banner year for HSC.

During the year, we made the most of strong interest rates, which generated a temporary income stream that has strengthened both our Operating and Expansion funds. This strategic approach has allowed us to support our ongoing initiatives and ensures we’re wellprepared for future growth, especially as we continue working toward our Campus Master Plan goals.

It’s exciting to report that we achieved an operating surplus of $3.58 million. This has enabled us to invest $2.26 million in capital assets, which will directly benefit the College. Our Expansion Fund surplus of $1.6 million is already helping to advance our Campus Master Plan while building the reserves that will support these goals in the future. On top of that, our endowment fund grew by $243K, contributing to an overall consolidated surplus of $2.79 million across all funds.

One of the most exciting developments this year is the progress on our Campus Master Plan. The initial phases of the Garth Street Entrance project are now complete, and we have developed renderings for a new Middle School and Athletic complex. A very generous gift from Dr. Clifton Farrell ’69 allowed us to bring some of these ideas to life by constructing model Middle School classrooms—a real glimpse into our future.

Of course, none of this would be possible without the incredible generosity of our donors and community members. I’m especially thrilled to highlight the impact of the Morgan Scholarship, which currently supports five students and has seen three graduates. This scholarship does more than alleviate financial burdens; it enriches our entire school community by promoting diversity and inclusion.

This year, our bursary and scholarship programs received extraordinary support, with $599,000 in awards funded. These contributions ensure that more students can access the transformative education HSC offers, creating an environment where every student can thrive.

I also want to express a heartfelt thank you to our Parents’ Guild. Their involvement culminated in the largest contribution ever—an astonishing $76,000! This generous donation has been reinvested into several areas of the College, including a brand-new play structure for our Montessori and Junior School students. It’s a wonderful addition that will provide a safe and engaging space for play and development.

These accomplishments reflect the hard work, dedication, and unwavering support of our entire community. Together, we are shaping a bright and promising future for HSC, and I couldn’t be more grateful or proud of what we’ve achieved.

Our core mission is to develop joyful and engaged students who live life with purpose.

The best learning happens when students are happy to come to school, have opportunities to follow their passions, and participate in deep learning experiences that challenge them.

Joyful, engaged students develop strong relationships with their peers and with the caring adults who spark and support their learning both inside the classroom and beyond.

Their journey at HSC prepares students to live with purpose— to understand their world, inspire, lead, act, and make a difference in their own unique ways.
