UNIFORM POLICIES 2018

RATIONALE Uniform is an important part of the Hillcrest community and students are expected to wear their uniforms correctly. Teachers will carry out regular uniform inspections and should a student be found in an incorrect uniform, we reserve the right to issue any needed items from the uniform shop. In such situations, an invoice will be issued by the uniform shop and posted to parents. We expect that uniforms will be well maintained - neatly pressed, with all buttons intact. In extreme cases, if continuous infringements to the uniform standard should occur, students may be excluded from the College until uniform adjustments have been made.

SCOPE All personnel, students and parents are to be aware of the uniform standard and policy at the College.

STUDENTS ARRIVING TO SCHOOL OUT OF UNIFORM The underlying purpose of the uniform policy is to ensure that all children arrive to school in school uniform. It is the responsibility of parents to provide a uniform for their child. Where a student arrives to school out of uniform he/she should be sent by staff to the office to have their uniform corrected. Where possible, the uniform should be corrected either by providing an item for loan or hire. Should the required uniform item be unsuitable for loan or hire, then the following two options remain: 1. The item of uniform is to be purchased, through the uniform shop, with associated costs debited to the fee statement; alternatively, 2. The student is to be sent home until correctly attired in uniform.

PROCEDURES

Parents are given a choice between these two options.

Students are required to be correctly attired in formal uniform when travelling to and from the College except for designated sports days when the sports uniform is to be worn.

GUIDELINES FOR CAMP ATTIRE

Students are seen by the public as ambassadors for the College and therefore must dress and act in a manner which brings no discredit on our community. Students who dress or act inappropriately may be sent home. IDENTIFICATION LABELS All school clothing, shoes, equipment (calculators), personal items (wallets, watches) and sporting equipment must be clearly marked with the owner’s name. The College takes no responsibility for lost property.

Students are to arrive at school for camp in their full school sports uniform. For sun-safety and appropriate modesty, students are to adhere to the following guidelines: 1. Full length t-shirts with sleeves are required (i.e. no singlets or mid-riff/crop tops). Necklines must be modest and not reveal any undergarments or cleavage. 2. Sleepwear must be worn to bed and must include t-shirt tops and shorts. Girls may not wear night shirts or brief attire. 3. Swimwear should be a modest one-piece for girls. Boys are to wear boardshorts (excessively high-cut designs, low necklines, halter-necks, strapless, bikinis, tankinis and speedos are not permitted).

COLLEGE UNIFORM POLICY HAIR Extremes of hairstyle are not allowed. Students whose hairstyles are deemed ‘extreme’ by the Head of Junior or Senior Learning will be requested to rectify the infringement by a set date. In the Junior Learning Community, no colour change or bleaching of any kind is permitted, either of the whole head or part thereof. If this expectation is breached, students may be suspended until it is corrected. In the Senior Learning Community, girls may colour their hair with a natural colour or tone. GIRLS • Hair accessories for girls, Prep to Year 6, are to be maroon (dress uniform) and navy (sports uniform). Hair accessories for girls, Years 7-12, are to be red (dress uniform) and navy (sports uniform). These are available to purchase from the Uniform Shop. • Plain metal clips and hair elastics, matching hair colour (ie black, brown, blonde), may also be worn. • If hair is collar length or longer, it should be tied back, out of the face, at all times. BOYS • Hair length is to be kept off the collar and no longer than eyebrow length at the front. Hair cuts to be no shorter than no. 2 blade. • A neat conservative style and short-cut, off the collar and above eyebrows when allowed to fall forward; no longer than the base of the ear, with at least half the ears showing. Undercuts, ponytails, colouring, and any cuts shorter than no. 2 are unacceptable. Facial hair/sideburns are not permitted. MAKEUP AND JEWELLERY No makeup, including lip-gloss is permitted for any student Prep to Year 12, with the exception of clear liprepair products. Only girls in Years 7-12 may wear natural foundation make-up or skincare products that draws no attention to the student. Fingernails are to be kept clean with no polish. No visible jewellery, other than a watch and one set of small, plain round gold or silver studs (no stones or colour) worn on the ear lobe, is allowed. In the Senior Learning Community one set of small pearl studs is

acceptable. Small, fine sleepers are also allowed but for safety reasons, must not be worn during sports activities. This is a stipulation that is adhered to by external sporting organisations. SHOES AND SOCKS Shoes and socks, as shown in this document, are the approved items to be worn with the school uniform. For students in Kindy to Year 2, black, leather velcro runners, with a non-marking sole are to be worn with the College’s sports and formal uniform. For students in Years 3-12, polishable, leather laceup shoes are to be worn as part of the College’s formal uniform. Sports shoes may be chosen specific to performance requirements, however colours should not be fluorescent or bright as much as practical. All sports shoes should be ‘non-marking’ and worn only with the sport uniform. Skate shoes are not permitted. Black sports shoes are not permitted from Years 3-12. For girls, Mary Jane style shoes, ballet flats and shoes with buckles are not allowed. For boys, slip-on shoes are not allowed. BLAZERS (YEARS 10-12 ONLY) Blazers are required to be worn to and from school during Terms 2 and 3. Students may remove their blazer while at school and store it on the hooks provided in the student lockers. Students may wear the College jumper under the blazer. For boys, Blazers with long pants (only) are required at special functions (ie Presentation Nights, Special Ceremonies, etc), when required. All other times, shorts may be worn with blazers. Senior blazers may carry only school-issued badges. Charity badges may be worn within a fortnight of the fundraising event. GENERAL Students are to be well-presented in uniform, at all times, shoes polished, shirts well-maintained, hair neat. No casual clothing that is visible is to be worn under the uniform.

All students are to use a College school bag, available in the Uniform Shop.

SCHOOL UNIFORM GUIDELINES OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL HOURS

Students in Prep to Year 9 may wear the College jumper/jacket or tracksuit in cold weather.

When students are in their uniform after school hours but still on the College grounds, expectations of uniform and personal presentation are as they would be when at the College before and during school hours. When students are in their uniform outside the College (except in their own home), expectations of uniform and personal presentation are as they would be when at the College. Any student not wearing their uniform correctly in either of these situations is liable for the same consequence as if the infringement had occurred at the College during the school day.

When participating in inter-house sport, a house shirt is compulsory. For students in Years 3 – 4 also wear their house shirt for sport development, each Friday. Standard length school shorts, for boys, are worn above or on the hips. Students in the Senior Learning Community are also to wear a standard plain black leather belt. The belt should have no logos. The over sizing of shorts and trousers is unacceptable. Students who fail to meet this standard will be compelled to purchase correct fitting uniform and parents invoiced accordingly. For girls, the skirt/dress length is to be no shorter than the knee. Girls whose skirts/dresses are too short will be required to purchase a new one. SWIMWEAR Refer to Swimwear section of this document for items available from the Uniform Shop. Students representing the College in interschool swimming events must wear the College swimmers available through the uniform shop. At other events, it is preferred that: • boys wear navy blue/black speedos or College board shorts and/or rash shirt, as necessary. • girls wear the College one piece or a navy one piece. Girls who wear inappropriate swimwear will be required to wear their sport shirt as well. College board shorts may be worn over the top of the swimmers if required. SPORT Students in Years 7-12, may wear the sports uniform to and from, and during the full day, on days that students have interschool sport competition. Students who undertake PE or Dance may wear their sports uniform to school on the day of the allocated practical lesson. On interhouse carnival days, students in Prep-Year 12 are required to wear their house shirt.

HAT POLICY Ownership of at least one College hat is compulsory for all students. Please refer to relevant uniform section of this document for the College hat that is approved as part of the Sports and Formal uniforms. Students must wear the College hat or cap during breaks, outdoor practical lessons, sporting activities and when participating in activities that are held in the sun. Senior Learning Community students are encouraged to adopt sensible practises in response to wearing hats. Hats are compulsory for outside sport activities. Wherever possible, students are encouraged to wear a hat in the sun. Hats are not compulsory whilst participating in activities in the shade. The only hat that can be worn to and from school is the designated College hat. Students in Years 10-12 are required to wear their formal College hat to and from school every day. In the Junior Learning Community, a “no hat, no play” policy is maintained at all times. EXCURSIONS College hat or cap, respective to the sports and formal uniform, must be worn on all excursions, unless parents are notified otherwise in writing. RIDING BICYCLES A regulation helmet must be worn when riding a bicycle.
