Leo Stockwell wrote a heartwarming article about the passionate Currumbin Wildlife Sanctury worker, Chris Halliwell. The essence of the reptile enthusiast, driven by the love of his own family is captured perfectly throughout Leo’s depiction. Not only did the article encapsulate Chris and the pride he takes in his career, but the portrait also taken by Leo shows the overwhelming passion Chris has towards wildlife. Leo Stockwell was more than deserving of this achievement as his article and portrait found the perfect balance of enthusiasm and connection towards wildlife.

"Our Animals Teach Us Things All the Time":

Halliwell

Beneath the scorching Gold Coast sun, Chris Halliwell crouches outside a tortoise enclosure, gently cradling one of its inhabitants in his hands. For Chris, it's just another day at the office – an office maintained primarily for the comfort and wellbeing of the creatures he admires.

For the Gold Coast native, the connection to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary runs deep, nurtured by a childhood filled with a love for animals. From catching lizards in his backyard to exploring every zoo within reach, his bond with the sanctuary evolved over time. As a local to Currumbin Wildlife, he would visit very frequently, reminiscing about taking pictures with the lorikeets. Little did he anticipate that one day, he would play a crucial role in the lives of the animals he admired.

Chris's journey at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary has been nothing short of amazing. "I love that I get to work and learn new things every day," Chris said with a smile. "Our animals teach us things all the time, and we're forever growing and learning from that." As a reptile and amphibian specialist and zookeeper, he oversees the breeding, acquisitions, and husbandry of these animals. "Some days I will be feeding a five-metre crocodile and then half an hour later, I have to feed a critically endangered frog that is the size of your thumbnail," Chris reflected.

His work with the critically endangered Tinker Frog is particularly noteworthy. Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is the only facility in the world dedicated to their conservation, and Chris made history by being the first in the world to see their eggs. His efforts have been instrumental in raising awareness about the unfortunate situation of the Tinker Frog and the importance of conservation efforts.

Beyond his work with reptiles and amphibians, Chris has a vast portfolio of other animals he's worked with, such as koalas. For two and a half years, koalas were his primary focus, and he was in charge of handling them.

The Stories of Chris

One of the most significant aspects of Chris's work would be the sanctuary hospital, which provides a free service to the community. The hospital takes care of sick, injured, or orphaned animals, aiming to rehabilitate and release them back into their natural habitats. "I think that is a really good connection we have with the community," he reflected with a smile. This connection extends beyond just treating injured animals. The sanctuary's education department actively helps with school groups. Chris mentors TAFE students studying animal care and oversees volunteers who assist his team in reptile collection. His ability to inspire and guide others is a testament to his leadership skills and the respect he has earned within the industry.

Chris's role extends far beyond that of a traditional zookeeper. He must also balance being an electrician, plumber, and caretaker, ensuring that the animals' environments are clean, safe and conducive to their well-being. His unwavering commitment to his work is driven by his love for his family and his passion for the animals he serves.

When asked about his motivation in life, Chris's answer was simple yet beautiful: his family. "I really like that I get to experience things for the first time again through my kids' eyes," he said, his voice filled with happiness. Chris's love for his family has been a driving force behind his work, as he strives to create a better world for future generations by protecting and preserving the biodiversity that surrounds us.

Chris's remarkable passion for learning and commitment to improving the lives of the animals he cares for has not only helped protect endangered species but also taught people about the importance of conservation, showing how much of a difference one dedicated person can make.

His amazing work will continue to greatly support the Coolangatta community and the sanctuary for the foreseeable future, inspiring young aspiring zookeepers to follow in his footsteps, and with passionate, knowledgeable individuals like Chris at the helm, the future of wildlife conservation looks brighter than ever.

BREAD SOCIAL ORIGINS

The Bread Social began as a dream shared over beers by long-time friends and colleagues Paul Giddings, Tom Scott, and Sam Saulwick Paul and Sam, then head baker and general manager at Central Baking Depot, joined forces with Tom, a head baker at Bourke St Bakery Sam's move back to his hometown, Byron Bay, sparked the idea for the bakery, and Paul's visit solidified their desire to start The Bread Social there Despite initial challenges finding the right location, a partnership with The Farm near Byron Bay brought their vision to life.

With Tom Scott designing and building, and with help from their friends at Three Blue Ducks, The Bread Social officially opened in March 2015. Their philosophy is uncomplicated: create only the finest and most wholesome hand-crafted baked goods daily. Using organic, sustainably sourced, and as local as possible ingredients, The Bread Social is an ethically-driven business supporting local communities and vendors through opportunity and consideration for environmentalsustainability.

They have grown to over 90 employees, a broad wholesale network, four stores, and a sister company, Rob Roy Deli and Drinks The founders' friendship and dedication to their craft and community remaincentraltoTheBreadSocial'ssuccess

RUN PROJECT

This term, RISE has been focusing on the Run Project, which is the main assignment of the term as it contains math, science, and HPE. Students are to make a running goal that they would like to achieve by the end of term and by training at home as well as school, students have already made incredible progress. This Run Project is like no other, as students are able to document their progress throughout the term in a run journal. However, the fun doesn’t stop there… students are sponsored by someone of their choosing who will then be able to watch as year 9 achieve their goals at the end of term fun run.

FUN FACTS ABOUT MARINE TURTLES

A Discovery of these ancient and incredible reptiles

MarineturtleshavebeenswimmingtheWorld’soceanssincethebeginning oftime.Today,allofthesevenlivingspeciesofmarineturtlearenow threatenedwithextinction.

Marine turtles live for a very long time. Although it’s not known exactly how long, scientists estimate that most species live between 50 and 80 years.

They spend their entire lives at sea, except when adult females come ashore to nest.

When it’ s time to lay their eggs, female turtles return to the same nesting beaches where they were born.

Once a turtle has hatched, the most dangerous time of its life is the first journey to the sea, particularly if it emerges from the nest after dawn or before dusk.
