PRINCIPAL, JEFF DAVIS

In the last week, Hillcrest has experienced incredible success in the Performing Arts arena. At the Gold Coast Eisteddfod Choral program, our students were immaculately presented and their behaviour was heralded by all who attended. When the Year 4 students were due to enter the stage for their performance, the school who had just finished passed our students in the corridor. Their teacher commented how surprised they were that the Hillcrest students

showed great appreciation and congratulations to this other school for their performance.

efforts in establishing a culture of excellence amongst these students.

incredible maturity and sensitivity to win this competition and set themselves apart from others.

This type of behaviour is due credit to parents and families, but also to the teachers and staff at Hillcrest for the way in which they instil a sense of pride and equity in our students in sharing true heartfelt congratulations for their performances.

It should be noted that the performances of these students was vastly different from the performances of other students, and while the cultural perspective of each school may be in part responsible for this, I would challenge that it is the Christian influence of Hillcrest and the softness and care that is found from the teaching staff that enables our students to out-perform other schools. This is a great lesson for us all to remember.

Congratulations goes, not only, to Athol and the drama team for their efforts in developing the skills and attributes of our students, but also to our whole staff, who bring the love of Christ to school every day and lead our students to a place where excellence can freely occur and they can achieve their goals.

Later on in the week, our Senior choirs performed to a standard that could only be described as sensational. Bella Voce won the Secondary B Grade section followed by the Senior Choir that won the Secondary A-Grade division and Bel Canto Choir that won the inaugural Premier division. These competitions were against leading independent and public schools from Southeast Queensland.

(Refer to the Performing Arts page for a full list of the outstanding results from our College choirs at the Gold Coast Eisteddfod.)

To see the huge number of Hillcrest students stand on the stage and sing in unity of purpose, voice and attitude, immaculately dressed, perfectly attuned to each other was something that you had to be impressed with.

Finally, the week was topped off with a brilliant performance by CALEB MONK, DANIEL COULTHARD and KATE VAN BRUGGEN at the Gold Coast Dramafest held at All Saints, where ATHOL HENDERSON supported these students in the presentation of Frankenstein.

I congratulate JENNY MOON and NERIDA RIENECKER for their

Hillcrest is an incredible place where students are supported emotionally, spiritually, physically and academically to achieve high level outcomes. We cannot sacrifice any of these components in producing holistic children, who are fully aware of themselves and others in the world they live and in the presence of an eternal God. YEAR 1 HIGHLIGHTS

YEAR 5 CAMP

YEAR 6 CAMP

A FRIENDLY REMINDER FROM FIRST AID

It has been a busy three weeks in Year 1. Here are some highlights!

 PHOTOS AVAILABLE ON PORTAL

Year 6 camp was a blast! It all started Wednesday of Week 3. There was a lot of waving and kisses goodbye as we left Hillcrest. It was as three hour trip to our destination, Mapleton on the Sunshine Coast.

Parents must provide pharmacy labels on all medications brought to school for First Aid to administer. A copy of the Medication Advice Form can be found under Student Enrolment on the Portal which will need to be completed and submitted.

WIPE OUT WASTE Last week the Year 1 children had a very special visitor from Wipe Out Waste. The children learnt the importance of each coloured rubbish bin and all the items which can and cannot be recycled. A great morning was had by all!

This Term our Year 5’s visited Midginbil Hill Outdoor Education Centre, which is located in Uki, New South Wales. The students had a fantastic time exploring the great outdoors whilst learning new skills. Some of the highlights from camp were horse-riding, pioneering (which required us to get very muddy), playing initiative games and making damper and billy tea. This year’s camp was fundamental in giving our Year 5 students the opportunity to develop their ability to work in a team and show their leadership skills in a variety of fun and exciting ways.

FIRETRUCK VISIT

We were all so excited that we had finally arrived at camp. One of the highlights was the food, every meal was delicious. The activities we participated in were spectacular, they included the flying fox, abseiling, archery, giant swing, orienteering, low ropes and Indigenous Camp Experience. These activities were all amazing but above all I think that everyone on camp would agree that the Giant Swing was the best. Archery was fun too, the thrill of getting a bullseye in archery is such an awesome feeling.

Did someone say fire? GET DOWN LOW AND GO, GO, GO! The Year 1s learned lots about fire safety when the Queensland Fire and Rescue team came to visit in Week 4. MISS RICHMOND became a fire fighter for the lesson and we even got to use the fire hose and have a tour of the truck!

On the last day of camp we headed to Australia Zoo. Upon arrival we headed straight to the Crocoseum. After the spectacular show ended we all split off into our groups and went around the zoo looking at the amazing creatures. Soon it was time to get back on the bus and head for home.

PIRATE WEEK Ahoy! Last week, Year 1 was taken over by pirates! During the week, the children made their own treasure maps, created pirate art and even turned 1J into a gigantic pirate ship! What a fun week we had in Year 1!

Everyone was so disappointed that camp was over but at the same time happy to see family and friends. We all headed back to our homes with hugs and kisses from our parents.

Also, no medications are to be provided by parents to a student to keep in their bag, unless it is Ventolin which is checked regularly for expiry by the parent, and an asthma plan is provided to First Aid.

SPAGHETTI BRIDGE CHALLENGE The spaghetti bridge challenge is a free design competition where teams of students have to design and build a bridge weighing no more than 300gm (including the 75 gram load plate) and stretching at least 35cm made entirely of spaghetti and glue. Over 70 teams were entered from more than 25 schools in Queensland to compete for the prize of $2,000 with the record achieving nearly 0.9kg per gram. On Thursday 6th August, I went to TAFE in Brisbane with MR WILLIAMS to have my bridge tested. The bridge only weighed 105 grams including the load plate, but it managed to hold 16 times its own weight until it broke at 1.7kg. However, without the load plate, the bridge weighed 30gram and held 57 times its own weight. This is a very good strength to weight ratio. The spaghetti bridge competition is held every year at Southbank TAFE and all Year 7-12 Queensland students are eligible to join. If you’re thinking about joining for next year, grab a couple of friends or go by yourself and think about what design you want to make. When the time rolls around next year, you’ll be organised and maybe you’ll win the $2,000. - OWEN LYNCH, YEAR 9

HILLCREST'S LEGAL EAGLES FLY HIGH IN BOND UNIVERSITY NATIONAL MOOTING COMPETITION Congratulations to Hillcrest’s magnificent moot (mock court appeal) team, comprising Year 11 Legal students, KATE VAN BRUGGEN, MELISSA RUGBUR and MILLY KARGER, on winning the Gold Coast regional round in

May and then performing with distinction in the national finals on Saturday, 1 August, of the prestigious Bond University High School Mooting Competition. It was a truly extraordinary achievement by the team, in its first year of mooting against generally more experienced Year 12 students, to make it through from an original field of over 120 schools to the finals with 13 other schools from around Australia, including Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, Adelaide and Brisbane. A wonderful synergy was experienced by barristers, Kate and Melissa, and solicitor, Milly, as they worked together in afterschool meetings with Keith Sypott, a former Hillcrest ‘Legal Eagle’ who recently completed degrees in Law and International Relations at Bond University, and Legal Studies teacher, Mr Owens, to prepare excellent submissions for the judges. In a thrilling conclusion to the national finals awards ceremony, KATE VAN BRUGGEN was announced as the winner of one of only four Advocacy Awards from the 28 elite, young barristers who participated in the finals. Judged by a panel of Bond University Law lecturers, Kate’s Advocacy Award carries with it a 40% scholarship for a Law degree at Bond University. It’s certainly an honour for our College to have one of the best student lawyers in Australia!

GRIFFITH BIOLOGY STUDENTS GIVEN RECOGNITION

• Week 1 saw us welome 13 new students into our community.

Each Wednesday afternoon, when school is finished for most, our Griffith University students stay back at school and challenge themselves by completing University Courses. The Exercise Science students were challenged to research into the ‘Effects of Biomechanics on Sport Performance’ and had to design a poster and present this information to others in the course. BRENDAN FILMER, PHOEBE JOHNSTON and GEORGIA VILLACORTATYLER spoke at Griffith University last Wednesday in front of 150 teachers, lecturers and peers. These students spoke with confidence and delivered an informative presentation that not only wowed the lecturers but was utilised by Griffith sporting coaches to correct and enhance skill execution of players. Well done Brendan, Phoebe and Georgia!

• Day 1 we hosted the then speaker of the House Bronwyn Bishop for a mock Parliament.

THE RICH TAPESTRY THAT IS THE SENIOR LEARNING COMMUNITY In preparing my report for the Board this month I reflected on what has been happening in our community since the beginning of this term. In doing this I wish to recognise the wide range of activities and commitment of staff and students to building our community. Below is a quick snapshot on some of the amazing things so far this term! • The sails were finished over the holidays and are now being used by the community. It is a welcome addition to our facilities.

• Week 2 saw our Year 9 students off on their annual SydneyCanberra Trip. This was a huge success with students learning a lot about our National system of government and the early history of our Federation. • Three of our Year 11 students competed against the National Champions in the Bond National Mooting Competition to come second. KATE VAN BRUGGEN was awarded a 40% scholarship to Bond University for her excellent presentation. Thanks to DAVID OWENs for the work he did with the team. • We had a combined Year 5/6 evening along with our annual Year 9 Subject Expo. This saw over 300 family members attending these functions and it was our first community activity under the new sails. • Our choirs in SLC gained many first places including: Overall Secondary Winner and Premier Choir of the Eisteddfod. Thanks to Jenny Moon and her team. • We have hosted 4 international study tour groups from Japan, Hong Kong and Korea amounting to over 100 students. Thanks to Cath Butler and her team for co-ordinating these visits. • Our U16 Footsall team won their competition. Thank you to SARAH SLAVIN for coaching them.

• A 40 hour fund raising lunch time food bazar under the sails raising money for those in need. • We saw our first Theatre Restaurant evening. A great event, showcasing our students and parents, staff and other adults performing amazing items. Thank you ATHOL HENDERSON. • Our Senior Drama students, Caleb, Daniel and Kate, took out first place in the comedy section and overall first place in the Act 1 competition last week. Congratulations to ATHOL HENDERSON and the students. • Two Year 12 students entries have been accepted into the Creative Generation Awards – SHANNON LABUSCHAGNE and MORGAN STEIN. Thanks to Lorenna Miles who is making an amazing impact on our students with her passion for art. • 21 students have been entered into the Gold Coast Show Art Competition. • Over 50 of our SLC community members spent an afternoon and evening helping feed the homeless at Coolangatta. Thanks to BEN THOMPSON and LISE MALEHAM for organising this. In addition to our student achievements, our staff have also been actively working on a range of initiatives and activities including: • The Year Level Co-ordinators are undertaking a 5-month training program on Servant Leadership. They are currently

in the second month of this program. The outcome is to create a vision and action plan for the YLC team to lead the Senior Learning Community • PETER FERNANCE has commenced in his role as Deputy Head of Senior Learning Community. He is already making a great impact with students and staff. • Our SLC team are now meeting every second week in accountability groups on a Wednesday morning where they break open God’s Word and share in groups of between 3 and 5. • The Head’s of Faculty are currently engaged in a visioning exercise for their area as we start planning for 2016.

ensure we focus our attention on providing the best possible learning opportunities and pathways for our students. All of these contribute towards creating a growing vibrant community. We are planning so that the Senior Learning Community will be recognised as an innovator and leader of global and collaborative learning. The outcome of which will be: students who are equipped for their next journey and provided with one of the most extensive range of pathways available. Thank you to the staff, families and students who make our community what it is, a great place to be!

LEGAL EAGLETS VISIT BOND UNI

On Tuesday, 18 August, the Year 10 Legal Studies class visited Bond University for an eye-opening guided tour of the Law Library, Main Library, Multimedia Hub, Moot Courts, Police Interview Rooms (complete with darkened ‘blue light’ viewing areas) and Tutorial Rooms, culminating in an invaluable Legal Research Skills Presentation provided by the Law Librarian. Highlights of the visit included a talk by a current Bond University Law Student, excellent online research tips and takeaway Bond University Law Faculty pencil cases filled with Bond University pens, post-it notes and other nifty stationery goodies!

• Our Year Level Coordinators and Senior Studies Coordinators have moved into a single office. This will enable the rich dialogue and support that occurs when a team works together. • PAUL WOTTON and PETER FERNANCE have been undertaking individual interviews with Year 12 students to ensure they are maximising their opportunities in their final months of Year 12. • Year 9 students have selected their subjects for Year 10, 2016. They are the first cohort to have the opportunity to participate in our “Subject Guarantee” offerings. A significant initiative for Hillcrest. • We have commenced creating a 3 to 5 year plan for the Senior Learning Community. This is to

Talking of the Act 1 theatre restaurant evening; a huge congratulations to Drama Coordinator, ATHOL HENDERSON for producing this event. An amazing day of Oztag was experienced by 25 of our Year 6s on Monday 17th August, when they participated in the Primary School Oztag Challenge, run by Andrew Pye and Qld Oztag and attended by over 13 schools and 74 teams! Hillcrest nominated a year 6 male and female team, and both teams performed extremely well on the day. The boys managed 2 wins and suffered 2 losses, both of which were very close and could have gone either way. The girls managed 2 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss, narrowly missing the cut off point to make the semi-finals. Special mention to FERGUS MCKEON who was named ‘Man of the Match’ for 3 of the 4 boys’ games, and Lachlan Clifford being named for the other. In the girls, INDEE SCHIFCOFSKE and REMI GEYER were named as joint ‘Players of the Match’ twice, and then REMI GEYER & AMITY PINK were named independently for the other two games. Outstanding effort, character and ‘sportspersonship’ displayed by all players. The teams were: YEAR 6 BOYS SAXON BRUCE LACHLAN CLIFFORD

AFL Awesome day of AFL games; Hillcrest had a boys team and a girls team in the comp - boys were playing 15 aside games, girls 9 aside. They both played well; boys lost the 2 scheduled games, to Gavin SS and Miami SS. They then opted to have a friendly match against Miami. The girls team won 1, lost 1. They lost first game to Helensvale but then managed a convincing win against Coomera Springs. Best part of the day according to kids was the fun they had at the conclusion of the day - playing a Hillcrest boys vs Hillcrest girls game! Controversy abounds, but apparently the girls won?! :) Great day had by all, beautiful spirit, manners and character displayed by Hillcrest kids on and off the field.
