HIKURANGI RSA & DISTRICTS ANZAC DAY NEWS Well, how this virus has changed everything! No Poppy Day and no Anzac Day Parade. On Anzac Day we held a small ceremony in remembrance of the people that gave their lives in World War 1 and World War 2 and also remembered those who gave their lives in subsequent wars. Thank you to James Morris our Piper, who started all this and Betty Fyfe for leading the service. The Last Post was played and a couple of wreaths were laid.

Thank you to Tafale Maddren for organising these.

After that James played the Lament and the service was concluded. It was very nice and there were 10 people present.

The disappointing part was that when we were going to raise the flag at the School Memorial, we found that a person or persons unknown cut our lariation (rope) from the flag pole and stolen it. How low can you be?

Times go by but some things still exist, like the building on the corner of King St and Valley Rd. A perfect location for a shop. At Chas. B. Gager’s you could buy tobacco, stationary, radios, cycles, prams, gramophones and records. Hikurangi had it’s own record store, how trendy is that! Because of Covid-19 our museum at 1 Alfred St is still closed. We will let you know on Facebook (Hikurangi Historical Museum), when we open again. BROCCOLI STALK FRITTERS To celebrate Love Food Hate Waste's Compleating campaign, try this delicious recipe. 'Compleating' is eating to reduce food waste and to get the maximum goodness out of your veg. Whip up a batch of these broccoli stalk fritters paired with lemon yoghurt sauce to feed the whole family Ingredients: 1/2 head of broccoli - stalk and florets 2 eggs 1/4 cup flour Zest of 1 lemon 1/4 cup grated cheese 1/4 cup plain yoghurt 1 tablespoon of lemon juice Salt and pepper to taste Olive oil (to cook) Method: Chop broccoli into small chunks. Use all the broccoli, both florets and stalk. Blitz the broccoli in a food processor or blender until it's a fine consistency.

In a bowl mix the broccoli in with the eggs, flour, lemon zest, cheese and salt and pepper.

Heat olive oil in a small frying pan on medium - high heat.

Mould spoonfuls of mixture into fritters and fry until golden on either side.

Mix the yoghurt and lemon juice together and serve as a dipping sauce with the fritters.

Tip: If you don’t have a food processor you can use grated broccoli stalks or finely chopped cooked broccoli.

We have started opening on a Saturday morning from 10.00am to 1.00pm. We would like to those who have already supported this so far.

This should restart again on May 23rd.

Whangarei Mobile Library Bus If you are a Whangarei Library Member you can use this bus when it comes out to our Library on a Thursday afternoon. Even if you are one of our own library members you can still come and use the bus as well. Your books are processed with us and can be picked up the next day.

We have no date as yet on this when the Whangarei Mobile Bus will return to us.

Tai-Chi Wednesday @1.30pm in the Hikurangi Hall. Costs $4.00 per session.

HIKURANGI GOLF CLUB It goes without saying that there are no competition results to report for this month. The members did it hard not being able to get out on the course during Level 4 lockdown, but those that participated enjoyed the online daily quiz about the current and historical activities of the Club. Thanks to Board Member Paul Allen.

Under Level 3 the golfers have been able to start playing again, making the most of the fine weather and the excellent condition the course is in, thanks to our Green Keeper Alan Healey.

Alan commenced working at the Hikurangi Golf Club in October 2019 after an extensive career overseas with stints in Egypt and South East Asia. Also numerous positions around New Zealand and latterly on Waiheke Island.

By the time of this edition of the Bulletin we should be at Level 2 or 1. Club competitions will be running again with the Mens’ Top Dog coming up. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the Club Rooms once again. New members most welcome.

HBA Update COVID has changed the world we live in over recent times, but now is the time to get back to it! Hikurangi has still been operating with a large farming community. The Four Square has shown its community value – making it a lot easier to resupply without the long queues.

A real positive is the Council’s commitment to the Hikurangi Placemaking Programme – a program that will see the council assess how and where the wider Hikurangi Region will grow. Now is the time for your voice! Contact admin@hikurangi.co.nz for the link to the Council’s latest update and how you can contact them via email at the bottom of the letter.

AUTUMN IN THE GARDEN - MAY

With winter on its way, there are two main things to do in the veg garden now: clean up the last of the summer and autumn crops and plant some new winter veg including brassicas, leafy greens and herbs.

In the fruit garden, the harvest period is coming to a close for pip and stone fruit and the long awaited harvest season arrived early for feijoas.

You could throw caution to the wind and grow the weird and wonderful. The veg you think “what on earth do you do with that?!” These are the things that add variety and excitement to a diet, and by growing them you won’t break the bank during the weekly shop. There are so many interesting things to try – flower sprouts, kohlrabi, artichokes, elephant garlic, okra and amaranth to name but a few.

How about growing some micro greens.

Add to sandwiches and salads, quick easy and super tasty, microgreens are crops that the whole family can grow and enjoy without even leaving the comfort of indoors.

Hikurangi Volunteer Fire Brigade

Reading "What Playgroup Means to Me", took me back nearly 40 year to when my boys were little. I certainly agree with all that was said in support of this kind of group.

And the friendships last! I am still in regular contact with five of my old Playgroup mums and we regularly meet to catch up with each other, including having a Playgroup Dinner now and then, mostly without children as they are busy with little ones of their own.

What Is happening in the Real Estate Market In 2020

Hello Hikurangi,

While we were in lockdown processing new reality that descended upon us so suddenly, a lot was happening in real estate behind the scenes, as the industry started to adapt to “new normal”.

Number one important step from the Reserve Bank of New Zealand was axing the Loan to Value Ratio (LVR), meaning theoretically that banks can now lend up to 100% of the property value (please talk to your bank to find out more).

This will come as welcoming news to those who are struggling to save a deposit and to investors planning to expand their portfolios. Interest rates are, of course, at their historical minimums as well.

While in Level 3 we still cannot conduct Open Homes, we are allowed to do private viewings. People can also settle on the deals that were made before or during lockdown, and move house (including rental properties).

We can take new listings on in Level 3 and prepare the property for sale: do professional photography, get the documents ready, start video presentations, stage if necessary, etc.

Lockdown has prompted real estate to adopt online technologies faster, as a result we are now able to: Negotiate and sign contracts using safe and secure online tools, like DocuSign and Flexi Sign Conduct Auctions with online bidding, much like on Trade Me, but in real time on YouTube Have virtual face to face meetings and discussions on Zoom, Google Hang Outs, etc.

On a personal note: we are getting a new neighbour! The property in King Street I was marketing, has successfully sold during the last week of lockdown. We will soon welcome new owners in the village!

PRINTING OF THE HIKURANGI BULLETIN Linda has helped put the Hikurangi Bulletin together since 1991 and in all that time we have never missed printing an issue.

Due to the Covid-19 outbreak in 2020 this forced us out of the office and the Bulletin sadly was not printed in April.

Welcome to Level 3 Hikurangi.

We are in interesting times, all of us are getting used to the new way of life. We hope you have all kept safe during Level 4 and enjoying a bit more freedom in Level 3. We are still responding as normal, the brigade has made changes to the way we respond to protect our members.

Please don’t hesitate to call 111 in an emergency.

It was good to see everyone that came out to the Hikurangi Auto Madness. It was a great day again we were busy on the barbeque table.

With a lot of people home, we have all got things done around the house, hold off burning any rubbish or garden waste. Don’t do burn offs even if its under control, the smoke often means we get 111 calls and firefighters need to leave their bubbles unnecessarily.

As the water restrictions continue we will be doing our bit to conserve water, any training we do will be without water, not washing any appliances.

With winter now upon us its important to be winter safe and Fireplaces need to be swept before they are used for the 1st time – this has been deemed as an essential service so no matter our what level we are on this can still happen. Please remember always put the ashes in a metal bucket and then pour water on the bucket. Ashes can take up to a week to cool down. Remember the heater metre rule - always keep clothes, furniture, curtains at least one metre from heaters and fireplaces.

Check any gas bottles for leaks before using them.
