BAC KG RO UND & P H I L O SO P HY Tohkomeupog was founded in 1932 by Milt Hoyt. His goal was to create a special blend of sports, outdoor camping skills, and appreciation for nature in a setting where boys could learn and have fun.

With the same core values and numerous additions to the program, Tohkomeupog continues to be a place where a boy’s self-esteem grows with his physical, mental, and social horizons. Competition is available but not essential for a successful summer, and good sportsmanship is always emphasized.

L O CAT I O N & FAC I L I TI ES Along with a NH Audubon Sanctuary, we are situated on 1,000 acres of land nestled around the pristine waters of a private lake near the White Mountains of New Hampshire. We are not far from Mt. Washington and

120 miles north of Boston, MA. Campers live in screened cabins with bathrooms and electricity. We have five tennis courts, a street hockey rink, two archery ranges, a riflery range, soccer and

baseball fields, a private waterfront, Sunset Beach, encampment playing fields, a beach volleyball court, and many of our own mountain trails. Several large buildings are available for indoor recreation. This includes the Tohko Dome, which holds a covered basketball court and rock climbing wall.

Tohkomeupog is a camping experience like no other. The program is a blend of team sports, outdoor skills, activities, learning, personal challenge opportunities, goal setting, overnight camping, and most of all, fun!

BEAR CLAN GRADES FINISHED 2-4

A typical day includes a variety of activities. Some possibilities are learning the elementary back-stroke, shooting a bow and arrow, hiking on the Presidential Range, sailing a Sunfish, or even participating in a triathlon. One of the benefits of Tohkomeupog is that the program is flexible and campers are able to take an active role in defining their camp experience.

The camp is organized by grade into four encampment groups called Clans: Bear, Deer, Panther, and Wolf. Each Clan participates in a range of activities,

sports, overnight camping trips, games, and special events with their peers and at a level suitable for their age.

Tohkomeupog staff are available and approachable, acting as mentors, role models, big brothers, and friends. They create a close-knit community in which everyone feels comfortable and at home with one another. Campers build life-long friendships that extend outside of camp. These friendships are

Camp Tohkomeupog, in par ticular, has been such a place for our boys. We thank you for your time and attention and for providing them with great exper iences.”

All campers participate in weekly trips, and they are the perfect opportunity for each boy to expand his horizons. Each camper discovers how to live in, respect, and appreciate the outdoors while building a great deal of confidence, personal skill, and self-sufficiency. As a group, campers will develop a sense of camaraderie and return with amazing stories to share for a lifetime.

Our knowledgeable staff is able to build appropriate trips for all ages and abilities. With over eight decades of wilderness experience, we are able to bring campers to the most exciting hiking trails, back-country campsites, secret mountain streams, pools, and natural water slides throughout the White Mountain National Forest and Baxter State Park in Maine.

Our trips take place on lakes, rivers, and trails from Eastern New Hampshire to Western Maine. Hiking and flat water canoe trips are available to all campers. Older campers also have the opportunity to test their skills in white-water canoeing, rock climbing, and mountain biking with trained instructors.

With skills first learned at Tohkomeupog, many campers and staff have become avid outdoor adventurers, achieving membership in the AMC 4,000 Footer Club, and some have even gone on to conquer the Appalachian Trail, and technical peaks including Mt. Denali in Alaska, and even Mt. Everest!

MOUN TA I N B I K I NG Since it started, the mountain biking program at Tohkomeupog has been an overwhelming success. The program includes proper maintenance training, technical development and maneuvering, and overnight excursions from camp exploring backwoods trails. Campers first begin by learning skills and techniques on a variety of single and multi-track terrain surrounding camp property.

Their skills are put to the test on overnight trips and triathlons.

ROC K C LI M B I N G Rock climbing trips are a favorite for many campers. They learn proper belay techniques, weight movement, balance, stemming, crack climbing, how to set anchors, and much more. Our experience allow us to choose climbing locations appropriate for various skill levels, and all climbing is under the supervision of trained instructors using the best safety and climbing gear. We always use a top rope belay, making climbing one the safest programs in camp. And Tohko has an indoor climbing wall for learning, practice, competitions, and fun!

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION E N RO LLM E N T Seventy-five percent of our campers come from the northeast. Others travel from as far as the west coast of the United States, South America, Europe, and Asia.

Each cabin has a counselor and an average of four to six campers. Our size allows the staff to really get to know each child individually. Tohkomeupog is fortunate to have a family-like atmosphere and less regimentation than is required in a larger camp. Usually 80-90% of our campers return each year, many for as long as 8, 9, and even 10 years. Many of our campers go through the CIT Program and become staff. We are proud to say we have sons and grandsons of Tohkomeupog alumni at camp.

S TA F F Each Clan has its own Director, Assistant Director, Counselors and CITs. Older staff are college graduates, many of whom are teachers, or working professionals. They are involved in planning and supervising programs as well as instruction, trips, and daily activities with the campers.

Assistant directors and cabin counselors teach activities and lead trips. They are generally college students and most often have been campers and CITs at Tohkomeupog. In many years, all of our staff have been at camp before, giving Tohkomeupog a record of loyalty no camp can beat. Staff training before camp includes classes in child development, sensitivity, and medical training.

ME D I CA L CARE Nearly all our staff is certified in Wilderness First Aid, CPR, Lifeguarding, and many are certified Wilderness First Responders, and EMTs. A fulltime registered nurse lives at camp to provide 24-hour medical care. A local pediatrician serves as our camp doctor, and Memorial Hospital is less then 20 miles away and available for emergencies. All campers are required to have a physical before camp.

LE A D E RSH I P TRA I NI NG Over the course of the summer, all campers develop their communication, initiative, and goal setting skills.

And for the more mature age group, the Wolf Clan, various forms of professional leadership programs are available including American Red Cross Certified Lifeguard, CPR training and “Solo Trip” wilderness camping.

Once campers age out of the Wolf Clan, we offer the Counselor-in-Training program as well as the Ranger Program. Each of these programs is designed to teach valuable practical and leadership skills while pushing boundaries, expanding knowledge, and building self-esteem.

FINANCIAL AID The Camp Tohkomeupog Alumni Association is a non-profit organization that awards partial need-based scholarships to help send boys to camp. For more details or an application please visit our website at www.tohko.com.

TUTORING Limited tutoring is available in many subjects for those who need a little extra help during the summer.

TRANSPORTATION Transportation to camp is offered from Boston, Logan (BOS) and Portland, Maine (PWM) Airports. We also offer transportation to camp from various locations along Rte. I-95.
