TECHNOLOGY THE TOPIC AT PAVING CONFERENCE Technology that adds productivity to the jobsite—from the soil compactor to the paver to the finish roller—was the topic of a recent conference hosted by Cat® Paving Products. The event, held in January at the Tinaja Hills Proving Grounds near Tucson, Ariz., featured Ray LaHood, former U.S. Secretary of Transportation. Also speaking at the event was Chris Higgins, engineering manager at Scotty’s Contracting & Stone, a Kentucky-based contractor that recently utilized 3D paving while building an ultra-smooth race track. The more than 300 customers in attendance saw a live demonstration of Cat and Weiler® paving equipment. In addition, Iowa State University showcased a mobile lab that features the latest soil compaction technology. The lab fits nicely with Machine Drive Power (MDP), a proprietary Caterpillar technology that monitors indications of soil stiffness. “It was a great event, and included a national figure as well as some customers that are very close to the technology we offer,” said D. Scott Phipps, Regional Sales Manager for Caterpillar Paving. “The conference drove home the point that Caterpillar Paving doesn’t just develop technology, but technology that makes a difference on customers’ jobsites.”
